- Darius on the Mega Drive/Genesis is a tough one, but if you can learn how it works, it is easily the best version of the original Darius that has ever come out, especially that Physical version.

EDIT: I said there are 7 endings in the video, but that isn't true. Zones Z and V are both repeated, so there are actually only 5 endings. I just figured they would be different since that's how they are in Darius Gaiden with zones Z, V, Z' and V' but that was never the case for the original Darius.
I’m glad they made this arcade perfect. The audio is exactly as the arcade. The only thing they changed was the annoying audio from the gun bullets. Which is a good thing. I personally think this is better than the PC Engine’s version. So to me, this is the ultimate version of this game.

Very well done. Thanks again for the heavy focus on Darius in this channel, the giant mechanical space fish deserve love. Nice idea using Proco and Tiat to differentiate the versions.
All this said, I’m one of those freaks who loves the arcade original. 12:3 aspect ratio baybeeee!!
Had no idea the mini version had crash issues like you experienced.
The physical version = zero crashes so far and I've owned it and played for at least a month.
And yeah, the continues make learning the late game a lot easier, so great addition.
This absolutely needs to be added as DLC to the Darius Collection -Console edition.
That Darius Extra Version postcard, seems to be illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame, I'm not sure, but the bizarre imagery and Tatsunoko Production's involvement with Darius' enemy design confirms it for me. Amano used to work for Tatsunoko, so it could be an old illustration or maybe it's new, makes me curious.
This version of the game, the physical version specifically appeals to me, if I'm going to play the first Darius it's gotta be that one.
This is hands down the best version, but some argue that it's even more challenging than the arcade version. It has a very steep learning curve, and the first stage is brutal, but once you've mastered the first stage, you'll have the basic mechanics down well enough that the rest of the game will be manageable
@@Bofner , I wish that Darius and Darius II/Sagaia came with 2 player simultaneous mode. Why can Taito do that for Darius Twin and Darius Force/Super Nova for the SNES/NSFC, but not do that with Darius/Darius Extra Version and Darius II/Sagaia for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive?
I don't understand the logic behind removing continues. I'm all for scoffing at the filtered and telling them to git gud, but no continues at all is just inauthentic: if I was playing the true original Darius in an arcade I could put in as many quarters as I liked, so why not at home? Repeatable convenience is part of the whole point of a home console version, so no continues destroys half the point of even buying the game.
Yeah, I guess the upside with the mini version is the huge amount of other games you can play, and the save states, but if you're just starting out on the Physical release, the learning curve will be huge
You have to keep in mind that even Super Darius on the turbo graphics 16 cd had no saves or continues as well.
Had this port been released in 1989, maybe even at the console's launch, people would've showered it with praise. But most reviewers ignored it in favor of Mega Man The Wily Wars, which...bleugh

I absolutely adore this game. I bought it without any particular expectations, and I've always been kinda lukewarm on the series as a whole. But the sound fx on the shooting & enemy deaths were so visceral that I just kept coming back. It feels like playing a shooter beat 'em up or something. I love the lack of continues. I love how high the stakes are, with one death meaning you won't ever reach max power. And yeah, I love how fast & intense it is, though it does make some of the narrower stages toward the end into complete slaughterhouses. I stuck with it until I got the 1CC, probably my most notable ever.
And then I stuck in the Darius II cart and immediately started on that journey. I also own Darius Gaiden & Twin, and like them both, but I think Darius MD really made me a true fan of the series. Now I just need one of those cool King Fossil statues that Shmup Junkie has.

The mini has save states. That makes up for no continues. It’s helping me alot to learn
5:25 It's just because both Arcade version and Genesis use the same type of FM synth sound chips called OPN Type FM.( Arcade PCB = YM2203 X 2, SEGA Genesis/Megadrive = YM2612[YM3438 in late models. similar with YM2612])
My God, I was getting anxiety seeing how fast the game moves and what it takes to navigate the enemies and bullets 😳

Didn't this version also come out on switch? I think I saw a screen shot of it, wonder why it was never included in cozmic console, also good video, weird the physical and mini version slightly different
As far as I know this version is only on the genesis/megadrive and the mini. The Switch does have the PC Engine version of Darius though, which is very similar to Super Darius, but missing some of the bosses
Huh weird. I could’ve sworn I saw someone online via a picture that had an application on the switch screen saying “Darius extra” I think it was a pre order bonus they said but I could be wrong
@@Mingodough There is definitely Darius Extra on the Switch, but it's the arcade version. As far as I know that's the only version of Darius Extra on Switch

I remember seeing that that version came with a version of Cozmic Revelation on Amazon Japan when I was looking into preordering it, but I didn't quite understand it and thought it meant it also came with the physical cart. That makes a lot more sense now!
Funny you mentioned that the mini version crashed because I have a digital ROM dump on my Mega EverDrive X7 of the original Mini 2019 version and when I was playing it with Proco it did crash unexpectedly but only once. It's a great game but I much prefer the sequel Sagaia or ''Darius II'' on the Mega Drive, the second one has better music.
I need to find a ROM dump of this one for my X7.
Привет из Украины. Недавно загрузил себе дамп Darius Extra Version. До этого у меня была только версия 2019 года, с Sega Mini. Полностью с вами согласен по поводу того, что Extra Version 2020 намного лучше чем урезанная версия 2019 года. Мало того, я играю на консоли, которая воспроизводит ромфайлы из карты памяти, так вот, версия 2019 года играет с очень искаженным звуком.( Кстати, это касается почти всех новодельных дампов). А вот Extra Version (W) воспроизводится с очень качественным звучанием. А что касается прокрутки кадров , и самой скорости игры, то Extra Version играется слегка медленнее чем версия с SMD Mini. Я очен долго искал дамп Extra Version. Отличия между версиями больше чем очевидные, но в коллекции должны быть все версии! Желаю вам дальнейшего продвижения на вашем канале. Я искал информацию про различия между двумя этими версиями, и наткнулся на ваш канал. Спасибо вам, я получил некоторые ответы о которых не знал.

The major problem with early Darius is simple enemies taking way too many hits to kill.
...and no damn heat seeking missiles, the upgrades are too slow with the weapons...
So...why isn't this version on the cozmic collection ;(
It's quite unfortunate. I wish it was! I think it came on some versions of Cozmic Revelation though
why cant we get it on the west on the Switch ;-; ?
I know it's such a shame. The Japanese Switch has a special edition you could preoder with this on it. You could maybe find it on a JP auction site for a lot of money, but idk
@@Bofner they did end up bringing Sagaia GB in the Cozmic Revelation so maybe with the update with G-Darius v2 there is hope
I know the feeling about the soundtrack. While arcade fidelity is admirable, some games had better soundtracks on the hardware at home. EX: Namco's Rolling Thunder 2 and Burning Force.
There's a new Cave Story Genesis port in the works, and the slight alterations made to the sound track are so awesome!

I actually got a PVM for free from my on campus job when I was in graduate school. That job may have paid terribly, but the perks of being able to dig through old tech were too good!
So, how can we play this game on modern consoles ?
It's available on the Mega Drive/Genesis mini (the first one), which was released in 2019, so it's a pretty modern console. HDMI output and everything, plus it comes with a lot of other really good Genesis/Megadrive games and is super easy to mod to get additional games to play on it
