The whole "I can't see sh$t" bit was hilarious, thank you for the good laugh. I like your sense of humor and how personal you make your script and opinions. I see a lot of what I do in my videos in yours as well, and it makes them unique and enjoyable. Earned yourself a subscriber. By the way, is that a Russian accent? I ask as I'm russian also and just curious.
Thank you! I'm glad to see you enjoyed my video! :D
Oh and I'm Portuguese actually! ^^
@@st1ka oh Portuguese! My friend ShmupsBR has a Portuguese channel on UA-cam as well. 👌
@@ShmupJunkie oh nice! :D
@@ShmupJunkie , trust me, Brazilian Portuguese is a whole lot different than Iberian Portuguese.
That "I can't see shit!" part made me laugh.
Anyway well done being one of the first reviewing the game. It's surprising no big UA-camrs did that indeed, as the game had a following on UA-cam before it was announced it would be released officially, and commenters lamented not being able to play it. Glad to have it on my Mini though!
Yes that developer is a legend, and on top of that, the use of the SGDK and the name of Stéphane Dallongeville are now part of official SEGA stuff, which is incredibly cool as a recognition of the author's efforts in the community.
Now, is somebody secretly finalising R-Type??? Anyone?
Oh man, I'd LOVE to see R-type on the Megadrive. I wonder if it could surpass the PC-Engine version?
I mean, I actually prefer the PC-engine version over the arcade original
@@st1ka Hmmm... Full play area, maybe slightly less on-screen colours but still as close as possible to the original... And of course Blast Processing!!!
damn right! :D
@@st1ka thats if they don't forget to include the exclusive boss fight in stage 7, Yashoo
@@st1ka , I wish that someone could port R-Type, R-Type II, and R-Type Leo to the SNES/NSFC. While R-Type III: The Third Lightning was fun, as was Super R-Type, those games just are not the same as the first R-Type titles. Also, fun fact, in the NTSB-U market, Nintendo, of all of the companies, helped Irem make the arcade version of R-Type.
There is more to this port than meets the eye. Glad you went so in-depth with it, but there is one aspect that every reviewer has missed so far. I will return and elaborate once I've had a chance to contact a couple sega archive sites like segaretro, and film some evidence of my findings.
With how in-depth you went in this video, I think it will be of interest to you.
I'll be waiting for it. ^^
You are an incredible player. There's no way I'd get anywhere in that Genesis port.
Haha, it did take a bit of practice.
I just tried the arcade version in Mame and made it through the first stage using the keyboard. It wasn't nearly as fast as the Genesis was.
I did see the massive arcade version at a Japanese arcade and it looked great. Didn't get a chance to play, though.
@@rsmith02 oh interesting. I only played the arcade version on the Switch and well.. you saw hot it went xD
wasnt the tetris released on the mega drive mini a different game to the unreleased one?
Wait, was it? I remember seeing videos on Tetris for the MD years before the MD mini came out and it looked the same I played on my Mini.
Is it possible they updated the game some way?
Yes it was. M2 remade Tetris from scratch using assets from Sega's arcade version, so it's true that there are two completely brand new Genesis games on the Mini.
Whoa! How does it change from the original MD Tetris?
@@st1ka M2 also have SEVEN unreleased Genesis arcade ports in their vaults, all System 1 & 2 games. The only ones they divulged the identity of are Spatter and Super Locomotive. They were all rejected by Sega because they were looking for a game or two which could compete with Starfox 2 in the excitement stakes. Again, the source for this info was GSK on Twitter and his huge threads of translated interview snippets.
That is super cool. I wonder the other games were...
I play Darius Gaiden on the PS2 collection, Taito Legends 2 and I genuinely love it. The sea creature inspired bosses are so up my alley, aesthetically speaking.
For some reason though, I think there's something wrong with the PS2 port though. I can't quite tell what, but something doesn't feel quite right. Maybe it's the sound? not sure.
All I can say is that I enjoyed the modern port much more.
@@st1ka , it was still a pretty solid port. Now as for ports that impressed me, I think that the one that Hideki Konichi made of Darius for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini was a good one and it was so good, in fact, that it also garnered the game that you got in this video.
Another excellent review video. I saw you posted you received a cartridge version and I’m glad you mentioned you had the review video already. I’ve watched a lot of review videos of the Genesis mini where the host briefly talks about each game and the hosts generally crap on Darius. I like the game though I play mostly on easy mode and I’m glad you gave it a real chance and give an excellent review for anyone unfamiliar with the game.
I'm glad you liked it and I agree. I noticed almost all of them just skip over or bash Darius which is baffling to me.
In some cases I saw people praise the SNES Mini and then bash the Genesis Mini for the very same reasons *coughs*MikeMatei*coughs*
@@st1ka haha yeah they give terrible reviews. When I saw the Turbo16Mini was coming I checked out their review and they were so hard on it and Mike in particular had several bugs up his butt so I thought it might be junk and was going to pass. I’m so glad I watched more reviews because that mini console is outstanding and I feel lucky I got one.
The Sega Mega Drive port of Darius (1987) feels so authentic that it feels exactly like how it could have been in the 1989/1990.
Right?! It's so good!
@@st1ka And it looks and sounds the part!
Also, side note, you are one of the few UA-camrs who reads their viewers' comments and replies to them, especially within one hour at that!
@@mypkamax I try, though it sometimes it takes me a few hours or even days if real world issues pop-up. :)
@@mypkamax yes that's a rarity nowadays! Nice !
I know it came out last year but this game's difficulty is definitely set to 2020.
This slipped under my radar too. Great review as always!
Haha, now I wish I had thought of that joke about the game's difficulty lol
Incredibly impressive what a fan of a game can/will do to port a game. Wish there was more info out there about how they did it. Someone needs to interview them.
Indeed, but it's hard to track down information on the dude ^^
@@st1ka Maybe if your videos gets around enough, word will get out, and perhaps he'll reach out to you.
@@welikewhatwelikenetwork1213 Oh sadly I doubt that will happen. My videos and channel never gain much traction, much to my dismay. ^^
Thank you for this review. I really like the way the zones are divided up in this game.
it's a really fun game and this port is SO well done
impressive and a great review. i always loved the fish shump. a bit of my childhood and st1ka captures it.

I've been holding off on doing a Darius Megadrive review myself too. IMO it's the best version of Darius, though I haven't played the Turbo CD version of Super Darius
I was surprised when no one covered it but I'm glad I finally got around to it
@@st1ka , I kind of feel disappointed that neither Darius Extra Version, nor Darius II/Sagaia (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive), had ever received proper two player simultaneous action (never mind that the prototype of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini port of the game indeed had a flawless two-player simultaneous mode in the game), whereas Darius Twin and Darius Force/Super Nova that were on the SNES/NSFC both had simultaneous two player action. Also, to be honest, both of those games had the best OSTs of any other Darius game, hands down.
I was lucky enough to catch this the first time you uploaded it :) Anyway, superb review, fascinating to learn all about what makes this Mega Drive port special. As for the arcade version... time to move reeeal close to the TV!
Or I’ll just stick with my Darius Plus on HuCard. Really happy they made a slow game for people like me!
Haha, thank you for watching the video again. I appreciate it ^^
I believe Strictly Limited is releasing a physical copy of this.
A perfect review very much enjoyed. Thank you!
Yep they are, though their copy is supposed to be a slightly different version. Not sure it it will warrant a separate review though.
The difficulty on the Megadrive is fine as long as you keep picking up shields when you find them.
Yeah but once you lose them, ouch!
That PAL-60 Spring Yard Zone music :P
hehe
Very good point on why this release was not covered by large YT channels. It requires learning how to play it.
Yeah it's true. I really suffered quite a bit at first trying to master Darius on the Megadrive xD
@@st1ka Tried it and it's quite a challenge. I think the game's system is very close to the 3 screen arcade, which makes it even more difficult than the original.
Yep very true, although the arcade's long screens also means that you really have to think before shooting. Because those bullets take a long time to travel to the end of the screen and you can't re-fire until they do.
@@st1ka yeap that's Darius. You have to make sure your projectiles hit enemies in order to keep a good rate of fire.
That's one thing that didn't translate to consoles, but the rest is intact.
Springyard Zone music was nice at the first part of the vid.
DARIUS: IT'S LIKE A COLLEGE ENTRY EXAM.
Haha
I know its great that they included darius and tetris but i wish they included ristar or thunderforce IV in their place and scrapped thunderforce III for sonic 3 . That's just my opinion though
Oh I agree, I definitely would have removed games like Alex Kidd and Sonic Spinball in favor of Thunderforce IV and Sonic 3.
Am I crazy or is your video and audio not synced? great video regardless. **edit** nevermind checked the comments and I see that you already mentioned this
Yeah sorry about that. I had some audio sync issues :(
Cracked up out loud at "I see what's wrong now ... I CAN'T SEE SHIT OKAY?"
Hehe, that was my favorite joke. I had to do several takes for that one xD
"Or... Frogger."
Show do Milhão: am I a joke to you-
Show do Milhão isn't licensed by Sega though.
I know it's licensed by TecToy, but that's a sub-licensee deal ^^
@@st1ka
As a Brazilian I kinda consider the Tectoy titles official lol
I mean I get what you mean, but I do think it's stretching the definition a little bit ^^
Ironically, even though I'm not a super PC player. I actually have 5 monitors in my collection of parts, so I can whip up an emulator with all of my monitors and go to town
haha now that's awesome
Sinistar from the old Gog? Hello :P
Awesome content.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
Getting a cartridge release via Strictly Limited Games as well
Same here! :D
We keep getting into the same games at the same time! First it was ODT. Now I have recently been doing the exact same thing with Darius between the Turbografx mini and the Genesis mini, and looking forward to getting the Cozmic Collection Arcade!
Great minds think alike!
1:13 i thought i was having a stroke before i realized you were lip-syncing
I'm terribly sorry about that. The audio was a little out of sync. I tried to manually fix it as best I could >.>
Awesome review!
Thank you! :D
Finally I could see, nice video st1ka, thanks
Thank you! I try ^^
It's a masterpiece really but the finished product wasn't 100% a Hidecade joint. The incredible music was taken care of by Taito staff (originally deemed the weakest aspect of the unfinished game) and the QA process was long and drawn out. There was major apprehension from Squeenix / Taito higher ups about a homebrew dev being involved in a official capacity with a Darius product too. After much negotiation Hidecade officially joined M2 & Taito staff for the final stages of production and the rest is history. As usual, excellent video St1ka, great work!
Oh wow, where did you find this information? I tried to look for more information on the project, but all pages I eventually found were in Japanese and google translate didn't give me a very clear picture :(
@@st1ka This info pretty much all came from GSK's Twitter feed (@gosokkyu) during the run up to the launch of the Mini console; he translated a bunch of Japanese video and print interviews that included the M2 boss and Hidecade himself.
D'oh! I didn't think of checking twitter. >.>
@@st1ka It's pretty obscure info to be fair and this video doesn't need it IMO
^^
The PCE version does have 2 Hu-card release.Darius plus, which can be enhanced with SGX.And Alpha,a Boss rush only game that was not for sold
Oh guess what, they recently released a physical cart as Extra edition with quite new stuffs
I had a lot of fun watching your review, thank you for doing it. By the way, I was wondering about your accent, are you from Slovakia or from a Balcan country?
Glad you enjoyed the video, but I'm actually from Portugal ^^

Thank you! I try! ^^
Great video as usual, St1ka. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! ^^
I enjoyed the video. Nice to know the history of this game. It's awesome that it was fan made. More companies should treat fan made projects the same.
Indeed, imagine if Nintendo decided to publish Another Metroid 2 Remake instead of banning it?
What a great review mr! Made me want to try this Darius game once again, on original hardware. As you said, I aos couldn't get any further than the 1st stage.
Yeah the game is super hard, but once you get past that learning curve, it becomes very rewarding.
Its awesome that they included this
Right? Such a cool little bonus
I would like to see Xaind Sleena in Genesis.
What's that? :O

was it the Christian music bit? xD
EDIT: Oh wait you mean the censored words xD
@@st1ka It was at the Christian music bit. That was quality scripting.

Great video! I'm going to be that guy though. The plural of octopus is actually octopuses or octopodes. The problem is that it's a word of Greek origin and not Latin.
I had no idea. Thank you for the insight ^^
I always liked Darius. I love the art style. G-Darius is my favorite (the one with the capture ball).
I'd love it if they brought the rest of the Darius games to the PS4 and Switch
@@st1ka Did some Darius collection come out recently? I remember wanting to buy it but it waas like 40-60 bucks, and I have a good chunk of them. I just found it, they re all arcade releases. Its called the Darius Cozmic Collection
@@st1ka nintendo.com/games/detail/darius-cozmic-collection-arcade-switch/
Its $44.95 USD. Heres the list of games:
Darius (Arcade, original version)
Darius (Arcade, new version)
Darius (Arcade, extra version)
Darius II (Arcade, Dual Screen version)
SAGAIA (Arcade, ver.1)
SAGAIA (Arcade, ver.2)
Darius Gaiden (Arcade)
Yep, what's what I own. I own both the console and arcade editions of the Darius Cozmic Collection. They were launched physically for the PS4 and Switch through the Strictly Limited website.
Not being a fan of this series, I played like two games at best from those Taito compilations. I remember those being hard but this MD version is borderline masochistic with such unbalanced difficulty. My guess is there was a reason for an official port didn’t exist back in the day and now it all comes full circle. It’s a shame though, the game looks and sounds great but I can play it for more than 10 minutes without spouting out a trainload of swearing. 🤣
It's super difficult, but once you get used to the extreme difficulty it becomes really fun. It's a lot like Contra Hardcorps in that way.
@@st1ka the western version of Contra HC is another fine example of and extremely unbalanced game due to the removal of the 3 hit bar.
But it made the game so much better imo xD
@@st1ka , and it made Mad City/The Adventures of Bayou Billy SO much worse. (Fun fact, where I live in real life also happens to have a business that is called Mad City Windows.)

Also, awesome in depth review as always. You make these old games sound really interesting even for someone who started out with PSX and N64 and knows nothing about Sega.
I always record my sound from a separate source, but this, for some reason there was an odd sync issue that I couldn't fix
@@st1ka dont worry it doesn't matter at all, as a Swede I'm used to dubs, I just had to double check :P
@@TheKnutification Thank you! ^^
What happened to your previous video ? I wanted to comment on it but it disappeared.
It was a well done and informative review.
I used to love shmups but it seems I suck at them now...
Ah the old video had some audio sync issues so I took it off and re-uploaded it today ^^
They should make a official port to pc of this game that supports ultra wide monitors they are getting more mainstream now (i'm assuming this does not exist yet).
As far as I know it doesn't exist yet. At the very least, I couldn't find the game on steam.
Almost nobody is covering Ultracore either, and I think the game is really good (although I am stuck at the second level). I could not find any cheat pages (except forvthe freaking gamegenie ones), or any level codes on google...I don't get it.
The game is great, but that section in level 2 can be super difficult.
The best way I can explain it is to jump just as the platform reaches its peak bounce.
Also, on the left wall there is a secret room there doubles as a checkpoint try to reach it
Great game and also great fix of the original Darius game from MD Mini, but anyone have dumped the ROM of the USA/Japan version of Darius Extra Version please? I want to play it, but i couldn't find any ROM dump of that game. Anyone have dumped the game? Thanks!
Sadly I don't have it. Sorry :(

I've never been a fan for Darius due to the difficulty level, plus the ultra wide view on some of the ports (ps vita) just make it hard to play.
Yeah, I completely get that. I had a hard time playing the modern PS4 / Switch port for that very same reason. But the Megadrive / Genesis port of Darius was really good.

The game is shit, you only have one life, no checkpoints and no continues. After 3 minutes you will be dead and that will be the shortest time you will ever play a game. The game is not good because everything comes too fast at you because the screen is scroppe by 66% from the arcade.
I enjoyed it. It just requires a bit of practice
Foul language not appreciated. Disliked this video & stopped watching. I liked a few of your other videos though.
If it helps the foul language isn't meant to be taken seriously ^^
@@st1ka I know it's just an act. I love retro games and I love seeing people covering this sort of thing and it's awesome that this game was officially ported to Gen/MD in this day of age. I'm just tired. I'm tired of people taking subjects that I love and injecting it with vulgarity. I refuse to share videos with foul language to family or friends, because that's not the image I want them to see me in. Whether it be other adults or young nieces or nephews. I've stopped watching AVGN and Brentalfloss because of their continual foul language. I have to pick and choose select videos from Death Battle (not just for language, but also for how gruesome the finishes are) and I have even posted and disliked over there too. I have to be careful with the Dorkly videos too. There's no way I can watch any videos from these channels with other people around, because you never know what they're going to spat out of their mouths. I've compromised for many years, just ignoring the foul language, because I love the subject of retro gaming and the creative things that people do with them to this day. But I've had enough. This is not the same love for games I grew up with. My love (or hate) for games did not include all this foul language. Foul language came mostly from some of the other kids at school and from R rated movies that I wasn't allowed to watch (which I am a better off for having that restriction), not from exposure to playing games or even the advertisements of games. Some of us don't want to promote or be a conduit of foul language to our friends or family, whether they be younger or older. I shouldn't have to keep watching these in secret in the case they had foul language. Videos are more enjoyable when you share or watch them with others. I know it's a free world (even that's debatable) and people can (to some degree) say and do whatever they want. But just as those people choose to exercise their freedom to do or say things, I've decided to exercise my freedom to voice my distaste for what I feel (and I'm sure many others) is inappropriate. Not to attack people personally though, just the common behavior. I feel like some of these videos I want to enjoy watching are being urinated or defecated on, which then can no longer be enjoyed. It's like someone making a batch of brownies to share with everyone, just like mother used to make, then spreading a thin layer of fesses across the top. I don't care if everyone else is doing it and people think it's funny or cool. I've had my fill of it and me disliking & commenting is the only way I can at least make my voice heard. Even if some people do choose to ignore it. I learned of your channel from THGM, btw. He's one of the few retro gaming channels I feel safe in watching any of his videos in public without previewing them first to make sure it's safe. I don't recall ever hearing a single foul word in any of his videos I've seen.
@@EriknocTDW Ah well, completely understandable.
Lmao the Sega bias is so strong with you haha. The backgrounds don't look like pixel art? What.. smh There's not a single thing impressive about the backgrounds.
The background praise also applied to the PC Engine and arcade versions.
The raging waters background looks absolutely stunning no matter which version you play, and yes, I believe it looks like a painting.
The underwater one sadly doesn't look as good on the PC Engine, but on the MD is absolutely beautiful.
