Battery drain test would be highly appreciated.
Thia needs to be at the top!
Pixel 7 on Android 14 has had much better battery life and no thermal issues.
I don't think I will have time to do a battery test, since 1) my expertise are more in teardown and other tests 2) I need to get a bunch of other videos finished 3) everyone complains on battery tests and each person wants it tested a certain way so its extremely time consuming 4) by the time I get it done, other reviewers will do it. So yeah. However if I do decide to do it, how exactly do you guys want to see it done.. lets see the 15 different ways people will want to see it done lol.
@@PBKreviewswe wants also charging speed test we wants to know if there is much different now
@@PBKreviewsI would like to know how to test a battery with volt meter. Is this what other viewers want you to do?
god damn you're fast. this is the video i was looking for :)
looking forward to the 8 pro teardown.
:)
Very quick, thank you! Waiting for the 8 pro
👍
Wow thank you for the quick video! It still sucks that the charge port is soldered to the mainboard.
NOOO they did it again!!
You're welcome. Yup sucks.
I guess wireless charging then
Or just dont break it??
@@fahrradbang69 If you extend the device lifespan to 7 years and more, it is possible to break it. If you are changing phones every 1-3 years, sure.
The charging port being soldered is so frustrating
yup
As well as the microphone, proximity sensor. Whole board replacement to fix those issues 😢
yup or soldering expertise
this is the content we're here for! :)
I think,it’s one of the best UA-cam channel for smartphone teardown, probably number 1, Cause whenever i search any smartphone teardown video, i always see your channel already have this video 😅 😍
Take love from BD 🇧🇩 😘😘
Very nice 👍 I feel like you need a rubber mat, so the phone doesnt slide around. But i haven't seen white mats though.
Thanks. Yeah, the main reason I haven't gotten one haha. Some phones are slippery some not, but sometimes I just use some double sided tape to keep it in place.
This man is from another planet 😅
massively underrated channel
PBK we love you here in the U.K.
Happy to see such a huge heat sink
Thanks👍
Hi @PBKreviews: Great Video(s) thanks for sharing teardowns like that with us! :)
One question if I may, starting in 1:13 little springs are visible along the edge that connect to the back-side of the screen when assembled. Currently the thread count for weird bumps visible in bright light (light needs to be as bright so that the screen becomes blue) goes up on reddid where users (including me) see those when the screen is turned off. I have also recorded one video (in my profile, an attempt to link it here was removed automatically). In case you have time to watch that/consider - do you think those bumps/dents could be a by-product of a assembly issue at the factory causing those springs to touch the screen a bit too hard so that the dents/bumps are visible from the front. In that case, could that in theory cause screen issues over time or would that rather be a cosmetic mini issue (I could accept a cosmetic issue, my only concern would be in case that could potential damage the screen over time)?
at 1:50 you can see the copper foil on the back of the screen is pierced by those stupid springs
Wow! Thank you..
You're welcome 😊
Hey, I was wondering, do you remember if the speaker grills are some fabric mesh? I was trying to clean it and pieced a hole. I don't know if it will impact how waterproof it is.
Thank you very much for this insightful video!
Could you report on the precise position and dimensions of the wireless charging coil? This would be very helpful to mount a metallic ring for a magnetic phone holder.
You're welcome. It would be the entire black square area on the back where I point out in the video. Not sure measurements since I don't have it on hand anymore to check.
Thanks for the teardown. Could you figure out which sensor the main sensor is?
Because according to the specs it surprisingly is neither the gn2 or gn1, except Google made mistakes in their own official data sheets.
(it is stateted, that the pixel 8 has ultra hdr which the gn1 isnt capable of but it is also stated that the sensor is 1/1,3, but the gn2 would be 1/1,12)
Custom gn1 ?
@@kevin-hp7vg Yup it looks like it. Google also already confirmed that to "derstandard" It is a modified Gn1, which can do dual exposure.
So the bigger update is the newer lens which lets in 21% more light.
Is Pixel 8 Screen a flexible OLED panel? Or It's Still a Rigid OLED?
It will be interesting to see teardowns in 2 years time when adhesive will be almosnt non existence as self repair & easy battery replacemnt must happen.
The struggle with the pull band was perfect 🤣
haha
Will the Pixel 7 and 7 pro be getting pixel 8 camera features with OS upgrade ?
Would be great to see how face unlock works in low light conditions. The face unlock system, beside the small form factor, is a thing that i really love at my Pixel 4. If the face unlock system from Pixel 8 works as good as the one from the Pixel 4, i think that Pixel 8 will be my next phone ❤
It simply doesn't unlock got my 8 today and tried to unlock it in low light, and it asked for my fingerprint instead.
It won’t work. It’s not anything similar to Pixel 4, it’s literally just a front camera.
Upgraded from the Pixel 4xl to the 8 and the face unlock works well enough for me, but not in the dark. It's better on the 4xl but the 8 has a pretty quick fingerprint reader that works if you have the always in display so it's even faster to unlock. Banking apps also support the face unlock on the 8
Please do a short speaker test compared to Pixel 7 Pro and/ or other devices 🙏
You are the fastest~
👍 :)
Great work mate! Please post a full review with the battery performance and throttling performance. Also what's the charging speed it's capable of and how long does it take to charge. Also whether the pixel 8 has an optical fingerprint sensor or the ultrasonic?
It's an Optical Sensor
Thanks, its optical sensor.
Hi @PBKreviews, has the top ear speaker a mesh filter like the bottom one? Thank you.
yeah, over the speaker assembly itself but not one by the screen slit outside between the screen glass and frame.
Man, I love watching your teardowns, very instructional and are a great tutorial.
You also help me quite a lot in choosing my phones because of your explanations and scoring. It's great to know what we are paying for.
Keep it up brother!!
Great video. Can you also do a Pixel 8 Pro teardown?
It would also be interesting to know more specifics about the main wide sensor. Is it a Samsung GN1? Or GN2? Is there maybe some writing on the backside?
It's a GN1 from the looks of it. Same main camera sensor in the 8 n 8 pro, and all the hardware info apps and picture details from photos taken point to GN1. I will be uploading the 8 pro teardown in a day or two.
Interesting. Google said in their presentation they are using a "new" main wide sensor, so I assume it's a modified GN1, maybe a GNV or a Google exclusive model alltogether. Google also states that the P8 (Pro) now also has Dual Exposure, which is a feature of GN2. Odd.@@PBKreviews
Did you ever connect it to a cellular network and notice anything about cellular reception?
What's the indent on the top left of the phone looks like a button but not really? Opposite side of the mic on the top
Looking at the thermal system in this video I wonder how the heat management of this device going. Really hope it's working to reduce heat from the processor.
A source says that the 8 vs the 8 pro is 11% slower due to thermal throttling, that is to say both still get very hot
@@raymondhacks oh wow.. that sad.
@@raymondhacks and that copper on the back of the screen might be the reason why the glue between the panel and the plastic frame it sits on is getting weaker on Pixel 7 and 7 Pro models. So maybe the issue with screens falling off from the phone will be even worse next year...
Neat and clean inside.
👍
No vapor 💨 chamber beneath the battery like Oppo OnePlus or Xiaomi flagships ?
But isn't this graphite layer on the battery missing, which could lead to heat issues?
Battery replacements seem nice and not too crazy difficult
It's about as difficult as basically every other phone for the last 8 years. It still remains annoying to do. Thankfully in a few years all these companies are being forced to put out phones with really easily assessable batteries. No reason it can't be designed like the old days with easy removable covers with no glue and only minimal screws holding it in place. Gaskets have been around forever and do a great job at waterproofing.
@@theRemedyGames Something like what LG did with the G5(?) with that removable bottom tray would be perfect. Just put the charging circuitry on it along with the USB port, and have it all slide out with the battery. With a good gasket and strong screws holding it in, It should be just as waterproof as an adhesive-sealed phone. Bonus points if they use something other than Phillips so the screws are not easy to strip.
It's just as difficult to replace an iphone battery, nothing changed for the better, now I understand the promise for 7 years update support! Most people just replace their phone instead, for sure not doing this!
yes fairphone already do it pretty cool concept
NF.2322 18 SB3 Main A863A - Does this tell us anything about the main camera sensor?
on pixel 8, there is a gap between the aluminum frame and the back cover on the side of the buttons, which is not on the other side. In the promo video, they focus on it, but other users don't have it, is this
Is the main camera ISOCELL GN2 ?
With such a large piece of grafite film over the battery, if the battery is to be replaced should you replace the film or is reusing it still a viable option?
you can reuse it
This taught me why I shouldn’t buy cheap smartphone given the requirement of genuine chips and parts with proper detailing installations, whereas, in cheaper phones materials are compromised surely with less focus that could severally harm us in long term even blast
Why is there a hole in the back of the screen like something punctured through? Near the square tape
Google continues improving the internal construction of their phones. Goog job.
👍
So just an idea, have you tried applying a little bit of heat to the battery before trying using the plastic strip? I know heat isn't good for any comment but Im sure using just a wee bit would be fine
Yeah heat usually helps loosen the adhesive, but considering the fact I used isopropyl alcohol which is much better at loosening up adhesive and it was still fairly tough, I don't think heat would have done much.
Thank you for the review. Can you run the 3dmark wild life extreme benchmark and tell me the score? Many people are curious.
Going to do it on a quick battery test video I will be uploading later
Hello, thank you for the video. It's very informative.
In your opinion, is this a more durable phone than the Pixel 5a?
I dropped my 5a and the screen stopped working, although the front glass was intact.
I would like to know if these kinds of situations are not going to bappen withh the pixel 8.
It could be that the battery or display connector has been disconnected.
amazing
👍
I'm 1 minute into this video and I feel duped by the Google presentation. They made it sound like it would be easy to replace the screen or battery. "'Apply heat to loosen the adhesive" is already outside the scope of 'easy'. Possible, yes.
Not to mention that adhesive might be fine NOW. In a few years when someone would typically be replacing parts the adhesive turns to cement and it becomes ridiculously difficult to soften it. I just did this on my Pixel 3 earlier this year. That adhesive needed a blow dryer on high for 5 minutes on about 2 dozen passes just to loosen it enough to get it started on one side. It ultimately didn't work and I just used my wife's old Pixel 3 where the battery swelled up and split the back open for me already and replaced that one instead (then transferred everything over). This glue shit needs to stop.
@@theRemedyGames I'm hoping the EU rules about user replaceable will help the US market, eventually.
@@theRemedyGamesBy the way, all the heat cooks the battery 😢
Nice
Thanks
Nice bro
Thanks!
After iPhones this has the best looking insides, looks clean.

Hello 👋 Friend Excellent Video today's Cell Phones in Repair Sunday 😁🙏❤️📱🇻🇪🇺🇲🗽
👍
So any way to confirm which sensor that is?
Good job
Thanks
Привет! Кто то сталкивался с зазором на задней крышке? У меня можно в эту щель, лист юумаги просунуть, и это не считают боаком в моем магазине
Volume button feels a bit loose?
When replacing the battery, i assume you would have to replace the graphite film to not mess up the thermals and also find new adhesive for the screen online, correct?
you can reuse the original film if it's not too damaged or wrinkled but in general it's almost impossible to find the original graphite films since they don't sell replacements for those. So almost in every case you are stuck to using the same one. As for the adhesive, yeah you have to use a new original pre cut adhesive made for the phone in order to have a proper seal and not risk the adhesive coming loose.
@@PBKreviews wow of course you can't get replacements. Thanks for the answer. That sounds like a lot of work and expertise required. I will probably just make sure to treat my battery well and hope to have it last until 2027, when I can just buy a phone with a replaceable one here in the EU.
Is the display cable built in the same way, as in Pixel 7 Series? What do you think, will the P8 suffer from the same green flicker display problems, as Pixel 7?
It's not the same flex cable, the design is slightly different so hopefully it won't suffer that issue but it's too early to tell.
My Pixel 8 makes a "rattling" sound when I shake it. I believe it's somewhere on the upper part. It never dropped as far I know.
So actually looked for a teardown video to check what it could be, looking to the internals.
But everything seems to be tightly fitted and screwed. It seems there're not actually components that might have gotten loose.
Anyone anny idea if this is normal or not. And if not, what it could be?
Its normal, its the camera assembly OIS
@@PBKreviews Thanks for the response. Thought already something like this.
Had something similar with the Pixel 6a, but on the 8 it's clearly louder and more present. So I was wondering if it could have been a loose component.
But everything looks tight fitted and screwed. So I thought it probably could only be the front camera or the image stabilisation.
It’s clean in the inside
And I should say the cleanest pixel on the inside
👍
where is the wireless charging coil?
Hi, just want to confirm @7:15, is the copper film and metal block surrounding it the only cooling component for the chipset?
The copper film, thermal pad, the mid plate that sits over the motherboard and the graphite film over that are all part of transferring heat/cooling.
@@PBKreviews Oh I see, thx for the correction :)
8's cooling solution looks less rigorous than typical Android phone, lack of vapor chamber and all that :/
After removing my battery and placing it back, the phone didn't charge nor power on, any help 😣?
No vapour chamber cooling I thought they will use it in pixel 8 when they used in pixel fold
Probably not enough room
even zenfone 10 and s23 had it 😂 google is joking
@@4jup4ter4Nah, some penny pinchers at Google decided not to cool this phone properly to make more profit. Cheap ass thermal pad design 🤢
А приклеивать экран получается не нужно?
Why were older phone batteries (ones with removable batteries) so much easier to remove? They didnt require a bunch of glue to hold it in place
Companies needed some way to force obsolescence so they said "well in order to make a phone water resistant we need to glue the whole thing together." This was so people would just buy a new phone in a couple years instead of replacing the battery to breathe new life into it (most people replace phones earlier than they normally would just because they want better battery life). Then they proceed to bury it under a bunch of other stuff in an effort to "make the phone as thin as possible." It also makes it easier for them to design the internals when battery placement is not a top priority...which it no longer is now that they made replacing it a royal pain in the ass for the average consumer.
Gaskets have been around forever. No reason you can't design a battery compartment with gaskets for waterproofing.
I don't remember you mentioning where the antenna cable is
How's the build quality?
And the water resistivity?
Will I be downgrading on build quality and water damage if I went from my s22 plus to this?
Build quality is good in my opinion. I don't think you would be downgrading.
@@PBKreviews will it be water damaged in rain?
no
Do the screens of the 8/8 Pro still feel and sound hollow when you tap them?
I don't remember the 7 or 7 pro but sort of. Also I think the main reason would be the fact they have the screen seated on the plastic border underneath that clips into the frame so the screen might sit slightly higher than the components inside and not have anything directly pressing against the back of it. For screen replacements, this is good since that plastic border makes it much easier to replace the screen, or other parts inside the phone without damaging a working screen when prying it off.
@@PBKreviews ok, thanks for the info. The hollowness of the display was something that really bugged me about the 7 Pro. The 6 Pro too.
👍
Hi, can you tell what type of fingerprint sensor this is? doesn't look like an optical one.
It's optical, since the area where the sensor is lights up when using and only optical ones do that to read the fingerprint.
Good
👍
Is that main camera sensor GN1 still from predecessor?
yeah from the looks of it
can swap module wired cam from pixel 8 pro to pixel 8?.as i see, it same demensitions?
Main camera should be the same, but we will see in the 8 pro teardown later how its layed out internally.
Will the 8 or 8 pro support video out via type c? Like a desktop mode?
nope doesn't support it.
@@PBKreviews that's a disappointment considering all these AR glasses out now
yup
Doesn't it have any kind of heat dissipation system?
They're using a thermal pad just like last time 😢... Phones with good cooling using more expensive and far superior vapor chamber designs.
Beautiful Google logo.
👍
How are the thermals of the Pixel 8 Pro?
With normal use seems good to me, but I haven't played any games on it
@@PBKreviews please do a stress test
Whats the camera sensor? GN1 or GN2? Thank you!
GNV
@@ChrisJohannsen very interesting. Thank you!
But has the fingerprint sensor changed?? That's what I want to know. It looks different, but is it just a different cable, or a totally different sensor? Is it still optical, or is it ultrasonic?
It’s an optical sensor
@@Ghost_-95 But is it a different optical sensor?
looks to be a different one but I am not 100% sure
Is the fingerprint reader optical or Ultrasonic ?
He previously answered that it’s optical in other comments. QR code gave me: 1LM7100400714AB37R01093
But when I tried searching for it on Google, there were no results
Early! 😊
👍
Is it the same modem used in pixel 7 series?
from hardware app info, shows a different letter at the end of the modem model so it might be a slightly revised version
Thanks so much for the videos. The colour looks really grey in your videos. Does it have much of a green tint to it ? Cuz I really don't like that
You're welcome. I didn't notice a green tint.
It has a similar internal structure to the Pixel 7.
так а шо, його не можна розібрати через кришку?
USB port soldered in the MB, no expandable storage while there is a thing called microsd epxress card.... still a no
removed my battery and placed it back, now it only shows low battery and doesn't seem to charge when charger is plugged in.should i get a new battery?
Might be that or can be a loose cable etc.
Not including a 5mm wave antenna was a battery saving measure?
Not sure
Does it still sound hollow like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 did when you tap the screen?
yeah i think so. Again as mentioned to someone else, the main reason would be the fact they have the screen seated on the plastic border underneath, that clips into the frame so the screen might sit slightly higher than the components inside and not have anything directly pressing against the back of it. For screen replacements, this is good since that plastic border makes it much easier to replace the screen, or other parts inside the phone without damaging a working screen when prying it off.
@@PBKreviewsthanks, thought as much seeing the teardown.. just wanted to make sure I wasn't just assuming :)
just curious, why it doesnt have 5g mmwave antenna? is it an international version? or google's just lazy to put it in us versio
I'm not 100% sure if this was an international version, but Verizon is charging $100 more for their pixel phones. So probably only the Verizon variant in the US will have the mmwave antenna.
It has mmwave on the Australian version
hi sir love from bangladesh
Im also from BD 🥰❤
Hello :)
Do you believe that the phone is still somewhat water-resistant after the disassembly? Its rather disappointing that the charging port is soldered, I love what Nokia did with the Nokia G22. I won't mention the Fairphone, that's a whole different level.
If you apply new original pre cut adhesive that's made for the phone, then you should retain the water resistance.
How do I fix the screen randomly turning fuzzy green? Seems to be a pretty massive problem for the pixel 8 based on the amount of Google results.
Contact the support, they will take care of it
@@Karlenk0 I tried that, they told me it was gonna be 3-4 weeks to repair. I ended up replacing the screen myself for around $100.
hi, you can evaluate dissipation from the phones on score too? that would make better choice for people who want to use it for games
I will check if internally on the 8 pro there is anything different causing the difference during the teardown, but I remember someone mentioning something which made sense but I can't remember what it was lol.
I might be slow but which part is the tensor chip
@7:14 its seated underneath the ram, so you can't actually see the tensor chip itself. The RAM would need to be pried off or de soldered off.
Could you please test the fingerprint. Thanks
I did, very similar if not the same as the pixel 7. Still optical.
Man I just bought my pixel 3 days ago and accidentally dropped it while getting out of the van now the back glass is cracked 😭 phone repair place doesn't even have the parts yet since the phone has just came out !
oh that sucks :/
Hello, Can Galaxy S23 battery be installed in S22?
no i don't think so, connectors will probably be different as well as size
Same design as the 7 which streamlines design yet they charged more this year
