I just can't figure out how they pulled that out... Tools we have today didn't exist back then, and even today, giving it a shot using a modern game engine is still very challenging, especially on the design side... all the patterns and details everywhere are amazing. Nearly every enemies are joint sprites animations... they probably had tools for that, but seeing few game pulling that kind of technology shows how hard it was to get there. Working on these consoles wasn't easy, programming them was very expensive, you had to be very knowledgable of the limitations and they couldn't probably afford to throw away work so often because of bad decisions... how do you work in these conditions? How do you envision, in team, something this good, without being able to fail fast? These developpers were outstandingly skilled at game and level design, in a non internet era. Pretty sure the team behind this game was moslty composed of seniors. I'd love to know more.

I remember getting killed by that mechanical spider and also that giant robot at 2:00 used to scare the shit out of me, specially the first time, that effect was so good for it's time. I remember not getting far into the game but he actually made it far. Recently, as an adult I have beaten it with all characters and all endings, but only once 1cc. This is the best Contra ever made

I was a SNES kid and played C 3 the alien wars ALL THE TIME! It was one of my favorite games! How have I never heard of this game?! The blast processing is blowing my mind! Great game! Im gonna have to pick up a used cart!
He did say blast processing, so he already knew it was on Genesis. I think used cartridges for this game are a little pricey, but if it's too much, you could consider getting the Contra Anniversary Collection, which is on various consoles and PC.

They don't say that the studio Treasure was formed out of ex-Konami employees for nothing. This game's graphics, gimmicks, bosses, gameplay and music are impressive! And the amount of "blast processing" being utilised between the Super NES and the Mega Drive never actually mattered (because the SNES is more advanced in hardware and release 2 years after the Mega Drive, which was a retool of the Master System).
No Treasure guys worked on that title. A guy at Treasure aknowledged that, I dont recall where though (probably on hardcoregamer.com). It seemed obvious given the comparable qualities between Contra HC and Gunstar Heroes. Both games are beyond expected limits on a 16 bits console. Well, maybe blast processing didn't mattered much, but still, the only title on SNES I can recall of trying to compete with this level of madness was Super Turican 2. And as I recall, it's not as intense.

Based on the replay files I made trying to beat the game on one life, it looks like it took roughly 6 hours divided between two days, which might sound like a lot, depending on your perspective. It's worth noting that I had played this game more than once over the years before I tried to do this, although this was generally not a path I did when I played it. I consider this to be the most difficult path, partly because of the spider boss near the end.

My main goal was just to beat the game on a single life and I stuck with the character who I considered to be the easiest to use. There are lots of videos with those characters by other people, at least.
I swear I vividly remember this game just being called "Contra Corps" when I had it as a kid. I think somebody altered the timeline. That or my mom just bought me a second-hand cart with a fucked up label, lol.
Fun fact you probably already know: In single player, the dialogue at the start of level 2 reads "we'll never get there on time" which could be passable, until you realize in two-player mode it reads "I'll never get there on time" and they coded it backwards.

This game has too many mini bosses and bosses very close to each other and not enough actual level imo. Basically, I'd liket the levels to be longer before reaching the various bosses because it feels more like a boss rush, which I'm actually not a huge fan of personally (unless it's just an optional bonus mode), than a proper fleshed out run 'n' gun game to me. Not that all the bosses aren't often very cool in their own right, because they absolutely are. I just want more than boss rush.

I don't believe the paths were officially labeled. If you are referring to the one seen in this video, which I called Path B, after the first boss, rescue the research center, and then choose to surrender after stage 4. If you wanted the path that I called Path C, which is shown in a different video, then rescue the research center, and then choose "fight to the end" after beating stage 4.
