  • Today we visit Irelands biggest attraction, The Rock Of Cashel. We explore the graveyard and inside.
According to local legends, the Rock of Cashel originated in the Devil's Bit, a mountain 20 miles (30 km) north of Cashel when St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave, resulting in the Rock's landing in Cashel. Cashel is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by Saint Patrick in the 5th century.
The Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion. In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church. The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. Few remnants of the early structures survive; the majority of buildings on the current site date from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Sarcophagus of Tadgh MacCarthy King of Desmond.
Queen Elizabeth and The Duke Of Edinburgh visited in May 2011, following in his mother's footsteps, now King Charles visited in March

I found this regarding Miler Magrath's epitaph- Miler Magrath
Patrick the glory of our isle and gown
First a bishop in the see of down
I wish that I succeeded him in place
As bishop had an equal grace
I served thee England fifty years in jars
And pleased thy princes in the midst of wars
Here where I'm placed I'm not and thus the case is
I'm not in both yet am in both the places

What a magnificent visit. Thank you Sure and GV♥️ I was taught in grade and high school by the Sister of Mercy and how proud they were to be an Irish order founded in Dublin by Catherine McAuley. St Patrick’s Day was the biggest feast day of the year. Those grounds are not only historic but so holy. Thanks again for the glorious day and blue skies🦋

Holey Dooley Sue! Even in its' ruined state the cathedral is still magnificent. I noticed names above the figures on that chest tomb inside, with an S before each name, possibly Saints? How on earth did the masons manage to create such ornate and beautiful stonework back then? It boggles the mind. That blown up High Cross was a sad sight, imagine the effort it would take to put it back up! Gawd....Loved this outing with you both. Thank you. Deb of Oz XXX

The moss and lichen will damage them to the point of never being able to read them again. It would be nice to have the cross from the mausoleum restored as well. What are your thoughts Sue? Hi Timothy, we had hoped to go to Hore Abbey but the heat and hay-fever won lol. They are not allowed to clean stones as far as I know it's down to family and if no family they have to be able to prove it etc it's a hard one to get done. Not sure about the highcross, it's sitting there now over 40 years, so I doubt anything will ever be done

Have you heard of the conspiracy of 1000 years added to our timeline? That an I or J before the year really means 574 years after Jesus (I574 or j574) ? Do you see many j’s or i’s in place of the 1?
