The Science of Hay Fever... Are Parasitic Worms The Cure?

  • Hay fever has an awful habit of ruining what should be the nicest time of the year. But what is it? And why is it called ‘hay fever’? Kate explores the science of allergies, and hunts through the research for a cure.

    How to prevent hay fever? Hay fever isn’t caused by hay, and isn’t really a fever. Allergic rhinitis is the technical name, but what’s it all about? At its centre, hay fever is an inflammation and irritation of the mucus membranes in the nose. Wind-pollinated plants hurl their pollen into the atmosphere, which finds its way into your nose and starts to wreak havoc. Much like other allergic reactions, hay fever is the result of your body fighting off the injected pollen as if it were a disease-causing invader. Antigen presenting cells, T cells and B cells launch into a hyperactive, over enthusiastic frenzy, ultimately causing symptoms that, although crucial when fighting off real infections, are a needless frustration.
    Is there a cure? Not yet, but one strand of new research is finding hope in an unlikely source: parasitic worms. The idea is that the worms alter our immune system to avoid being repelled. These alterations just might hold the key to staving off hay fever, and finding summer happiness at last.
    This film is part of our series that provides the blueprint for a scientifically perfect summer. Taking a different topic each Thursday, the videos will gradually build up an equation for summer perfection; a summer survival guide certified by science.

    Hayfever was first described as far back as ancient Greek literature.
    By the 1700s, English diaries comment on "Summer afflictions" describing hayfever and noting those who can afford, move to the sea side for the summer.
    I am just astounded that there's no cure. But then, as my Bio Chemist lecture at Cambridge once said "why sell a cure to a non life threatening allergy when they make billions on drugs that help reduce the effects"
    I also find it interesting to observe that actors, politicians, sportsman, singers, monarchs show neither sneezing fits or any signs of hayfever?! Must be just a HUGE coincidence that all these folks haven't got hayfever?!

    So worms shut down the detection system. How is this not HIV-like and dangerous?

    • @RBuckminsterFuller
      @RBuckminsterFuller 9 років тому +1

      Silvan Geissmann These helminths wouldn't shut the immune system down, they'd make your immune system concentrate its efforts towards an actual threat, regulating immune reactions.

    • @TheRoyalInstitution
      @TheRoyalInstitution  9 років тому +8

      Silvan Geissmann Worms pacify our immune response by deactivating certain immune cells which means that our immune response is less strong against things such as worms and allergens. It's mode of action is focussed particularly on the IgE pathway. IgE is the antibody that is involved in parasitic infections and in allergic responses, but not in much else (though this could lead to slightly higher vulnerability to secondary parasitic worm infections). Instead, it's the IgG antibody that is most active in our bodies in the fight against most human pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. HIV on the other hand directly infects immune cells and actually takes residence in there. It gradually shuts down our entire cell mediated immune response by either directly or indirectly killing off a vital part of the system - CD4+ T cells.
