    Had a few requests for a video describing my setup that I use for fly fishing streamers. I use the same rig for both tight line nymphing and streamer fishing. The things I like the most about this setup are it's super simple, the entire line is visible and it's effective.

    For several years I've pretty much dedicated 80% of my time on the water to streamer fishing for trout. It's just fun and produces bigger fish...imo. Stripping, jigging, swing, spey, all line types, all streamer types, I do it all.
    This is the first season that I started fishing heavier jig-style streamers on a Euro/mono setup and HOLY COW, how things have changed! I am easily catching 3 to 4 times as many fish as I used to. Consistently covering the bottom matched up with the extreme sensitivity makes all the difference in the world. The cool thing is that you can still work the fly traditionally too. You can do just about anything you want except for long-distance coverage (like swing/spey fishing).
    I am so glad that guys like you put in the effort to make these videos provide the basics of this setup and style. I really helped get me started. So thank you for that.
    Everyone that loves streamers should try this. It will cost you nothing and you have everything to gain.

    Man, you’re right about some people over complicating this stuff. I watch some vids on rigs and by the 15th knot I’m just like “forget it, I don’t even want to learn how to do this anymore”. As it is, I feel like I spend more time tying damn knots than actually fishing lol. People forget that fly fishing was like, how poor people ate lol… with literally a piece of wood and a crude reel. They took it and made it into rocket science and a kazillion dollar industry. You could probably buy some fly fishing thing(line, mono, tippet, cleaner, floatant, etc etc etc etc) every day for the rest of your life and still die with only half the stuff you “need”. Lol

    I agree. If it works for you just do it. That's the best advice. You don't need bells and whistles. 👍🏻

      I personally don't like all the complications and keeping track of everything and maintaining setups. This one is simple and can be used for nymphs, streamers, and even close range dries.

    I run pretty similar to a setup myself. 20 lb mono to my cider to fluorocarbon to my flies or streamer. Where I fish not a whole lot of chance of hooking into anything big so I'm usually on four or five x with my streamer. But I'm doing that off of my euro rod. It's worked out very nicely with streamers so far

    Thanks for this informative and encouraging explanation! I am new to streamer fishing and was initially discouraged by the prospect of potentially having to get a dedicated streamer rod & line, but am relieved to learn that the omission of heavy streamer fly line will allow me to use this technique on my current 9' 5wt. Have you experimented with other mono running lines, e.g. Maxima or OPST Lazar? Also, with the increased tippet diameter, I presume you want to use a larger tippet ring like a 3mm? I picked up some micro barrel swivels and plan to experiment with them to see if they reduce line twist. Maybe I missed it, but is there a terminal tippet brand you recommend? For reliability and affordability, I have heard good things about Seaguar InvizX and AbrazX. Thanks again!

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  4 роки тому

      Glad this video helped out. I have not used any other lines other than Amnesia. I use the same size tippet ring for both streamer fishing and nymphing. I don't know the size off hand, but I assume it's the smaller size most commonly used for nymphing rigs. I think you should be okay with just a tippet ring instead of a barrel swivel as I have never had any issues with line twisting. I don't use branded "tippet" material and just use Berkley Vanish flurocarbon fishing line. Never had any issues.

    The amount of Amnesia you’re using, is that in feet or yards? In your nymphing video you said yards. Also approximately how much backing do you use?

  • @neillee4406
    @neillee4406 4 роки тому +1

    How do you feel about criticism from fly fishing purists that because you aren't using a weighted fly line to present your fly, you aren't really "fly fishing". I am slowly migrating to a pure mono rig since I've picked up euro nymphing, but I kinda get that vibe from purists when I tell them my techniques and rigging.

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  4 роки тому +3

      Good question man. haha I don't even pay attention to what other people think. The end goal is catching fish so whatever does that most effectively in a fun and simple way for me is what I'll use. Never cared if someone didn't like the way I was fishing.

    Good explanation and good job! One question though, can you fish a dry fly with this set up? Will a bow and arrow cast work? I guess that’s 2 questions lol. Good video

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  3 роки тому

      Thank you!
      You can, but at very short distances.
      Bow and arrow casts work, but only with flies that have some weight to them.

    I’m sure it works and is also very effective. The only catch is it’s legality in a Pa Fly Fishing only Section. The max Leader or Mono used cannot exceed 18 feet here in Pa .. Thank You. Tight Lines

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  4 роки тому

      Very true, there aren't many places I fish in PA that are fly fishing only though. And if that is the case you can always just measure out 18feet and use that much Amnesia.

    Where did you learn about the mono rig? My guess is my buddy Dom and Troutbitten learned you....

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  3 роки тому +1

      Learned from a lot of people, including Dom from Troutbitten, UA-cam videos, etc... Then once I learned the basics of tight lining I started using different rigs and then found I like using this one.

    • @Jon626
      @Jon626 3 роки тому +1

      @@Brownsylvania Right on. I've tried pretty much every different variation of mono rigs you could imagine. It's been interesting. If you want to get real crazy try the thinnest maxima you can get...I was rocking a 10lb test mono rig which worked pretty well. For streamers I prefer swinging on OPST Lazar line.

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  3 роки тому

      Yeah currently I just run straight 10lb Amnesia as my rig. I like it for nymphing and streamers.

    Is 20 # the best Mono for a beginner? I see the Amnesia comes in 25 and 30 pound also. Any advantage or disadvantage for the heavier line vs the 20?

    • @Brownsylvania
      @Brownsylvania  3 роки тому +2

      I wouldn't recommend higher than #20 for strictly nymphing as you start to lose sensitivity. I do use #30 for my streamer rig though as it's a little easier to grab when stripping. Anywhere from #10-#20 is what I recommend for nymphing.
