Thanks for sharing this setup, and taking the time to explain why you use it. It really helps to understand the thought process behind given techniques and rigs when considering how I can adapt it to my own fishing.
I love your written content... no doubt about that. But it's pretty epic to get some video content from you like this, too. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing, George!
I have a 3wt reel loaded with lazer line for my switch rod, never thought people actually fly fished with out fly line. Im heading to the Guadalupe in a few weeks to trout fish. Ima have to try this with my single hand rod that has been collecting dust.
Are you using OPST without any fly line? I can't tell if you're using fly line or only the OPST. It seems that if you're using 90 feet of it then you must not be using a fly line. I'm sorry I'm a beginner so I'm a little confused. Thanks!
Great video, George! I"m curious about the white leader material above the two-tone sighter. Does it provide extra detection, or does its material aid in turnover? Thanks? Toney
Did joe humphreys also use some kind of shooting mono? Ive seen his nymphing series where he adviced using a level line and ive always wondered which type of line is he reffering to
Good morning George. Have a question regarding the need for a "running" line. I have a euro nymph fly line from Rio. Do I need a running line attached to my euro fly line and then my leader or do I attach my euro leader directly to my euro fly line? Thank you.
Great video! I'm looking forward to trying it out with my current 9' 5wt fast action Diamondback VSR, (I'm a noob). Will a 5wt still use the same 25# OPST main line? At what point (rod weight) would you increase the # of the main line? I'm curious to try with 6-8 wt for smallmouth streamer/fly droppers. Thanks!
A little heavier main line(or flyline) will help get you more distance....and if a 4wt or lighter, imho(coming from conventional rigging) you can get both detection + range...but if you only fish short distances....go with whatever works best for your area...
This works great . The only drawback is the PA fish wardens may consider the whole thing a leader. On some special regulation waters the length of the leader is limited !
Would the new RIO TWO TONE INDICATOR TIPPET in Black & White 1X 0.010 in / 0.254 mm / 11 lbs (largest size) work to replace the Cortland White? Easier to find 2 products from the same manufacture available in a single shop.
Hello George, can I use Airflo euro nymph fly line .60mm then to the leader you are describing. What about your rig ? do you use 2 flies? do you use weight as a point? Thanks
I'm doing this. I have an Orvis Clearwater 10' 3wt with a 3wt trout line that the condescending Orvis store guy convinced me into buying instead of a euro line that I wanted to buy. He may be right that if I only have one rod that it may be nice to have if I wanted to fish a dry fly. I'm going to modify this formula a bit and use a loop to loop but probably not 90' of the shooting line so I can just swap it off easily. We'll see how she pans out.
Hey, George - Great idea for Euro leader and I intend to build/use it on my 9'/5wt. (newbie), just wondering if/what you use for backing, preferable length and knots (perfection loop, double surgeons or ?) for a loop-to-loop connection to 90' leader? Oh, and I assume you're using a blood knot for tippet connection w/UV light glue to minimize hang-ups. Lastly, what's your preferred fluoro line (e.g., "Trout Hunter" or RIO)? Thank you, any related suggestions are greatly appreciated...
Try what you like. The nice thing about a mono is as said no sag but also no line to leader transition into the guides if you do a small bit of UV resin on the line to butt blood knot it's super smooth playing fish in on the reel. Benefit of a euro line like Rio or SA kit to me is a bit more load to the rod during casting if you need to turn over your nymphs a bit further out but you are going to be getting to that leader transition and if using light tippet like 5x or 6x you may break off fish when that hangs up.
Hey George. Thanks for the informative videos! Always looking for new ways to up my game! Is there an advantage to using the OPST system instead of just using a longer euro nymph leader (20') with regular fly line in terms of strike detection? Seemingly, an advantage might be less knots. But, a plus for the long leader approach would be the ease of changing rigs from nymphing to dry/wets. Your thoughts? Do you recommend a brand of OPST? Where can I buy the white mono?
cause there's nothing to it..flyfishing is a beautiful art ..not to mention fly tieing...I won't bother with a spinning rod anymore..Theres no challange..jmo
@@inthemomentflyfishing1394 I meant use a spinning reel on the fly rod. Fly reels aren't designed for mono line. I fly fish as well, started nymphing more, I find it boring, I prefer streamer fishing, however dry flies are my favorite.
OPST is a brand. Commonly known as OPST, Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics makes a shooting line called Lazar Line that is usually used behind a Skagit shooting head, but also works well for euro nymphing line. But you could've looked that up yourself with the smallest amount of effort.

I cannot find 25 LB OPST anywhere. Any suggestions?

Hi George, do you think you will post the second part of your rigging soon? Love your videos. Makes me much more confident on the water.
George, thanks for this video. Question: What rod and reel do you use with this type of rig? Thank you - Dale

Ever fish a lighter main line? In Spain I fished with a guide that went as light as 4/5x. Flow was very fast

Hi, Daniel. You indicate using a 2X sighter, but did not indicate the length of the sighter. How long do you recommend the 2X should be? Thanks.
He mentioned 20”

Not able to find OSPT IN 25 LB. 30 LB. or greater. Is 30 lb. Too much? Thanks, Dvid

Will lazar throw dry fly? Heavy mono tapered shock leader that I use for nymphing does...
This will not. this is limp stuff
What brand is 13 lb opaque white monofilament?
why do you have 4ft of 13lb test white opaque mono? can you just go from the 25lb to the sighter material?

Can the mono cast or is it just meant for fishing under your rod tip?
Ever use something a little cheaper like amnesia? Or strictly OPST?
15m or 50m of OPST?
I’ve built the whole rig… now I’d love to know how to cast the MF’r more than 2’ in front of me .
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣That "shooting line" not working?
I'm not laughing at you; I'm laughing at your comment. Good comment.
Keep at it. You'll get it.

In some States the use of Mono Rigs is not allowed on Fly Fishing Only streams....
Great video ! How is that orvis h3 euro rod? Is it lighter and more accurate than the t and t contact?
I would say both rods are close to being equal..both are light and track well for accuracy.
Thank you for the feedback. Greatly appreciated.
what weight is the OPST?
Mono vs Braided vs Hybrid vs Euro fly lines ??

I can not find opst in 25lb anywhere
Good video..thanks
thanks!
thanks!
George, is this set up comp. legal, (FIPS)?
No, it is not comp legal. regards
Opst which one? Lazar Running line or Skagit ?
running line
lazar

@trut5480 These "Mono Rigs" don't utilize fly line, mono only. Hence my comment?
Not so good in english. Can you write all lines what you use?! Thx.
It's written down at 0:04
So basically spin/bait fishing methods are superior. Now we’re just drifting nymphs instead of wax worms.
Mr. Daniels, you simultaneously belabor the mass of fly line point AND assume all of us know what OPST is. WTF is OPST?
