I read The Shining and Ghost Story many years ago. The Joe Hill book sounded especially interesting after you said the main character is a death metal singer.
One book I read recently with a haunting that I really liked was A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher. It would probably be considered tame in comparison to many of the books you mentioned. But I quite enjoyed it. It is kind of a southern (US) gothic novel
Thanks for watching Stuart! I think you will really enjoy Heart-Shaped Box, terrifying novel. I will definitely keep an eye out for House Of Good Bones, heard good things. Happy Reading! 📚🎃
Like you, I read "Ghost Story" 40 or so years ago, but I really enjoyed it! I had seen the movie which while being very atmospheric, was kind of weird. I thought the book to be considerably better. I will say it caused me to buy several more Straub titles, none of which I remember as well as GS. Of the others on your list, I of course have read "The Shining" but also "Bag of Bones" which I enjoyed almost as much. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
My pleasure! I do need to re-read Ghost Story one day as I have forgotten parts of the book. I have not seen the movie. I think Bag of Bones is definitely one of Stephen King's more under-rated novels. Happy Read. 📚
Just watched Ghost Story and it is a recommend for a good winter horror show. Willows is such a suffocating story. You feel like you're being squeezed.
And The Shining is always the right answer.
Thanks so much for watching. I have not seen the movie of Ghost Story, sounds good. Algernon Blackwood is a fantastic author. Happy Reading! 📚🎃
Love The Elementals, Heart-Shaped Box, Ghost Story, and The Shining. Fantastic list!
Thank you Jen! If you love The Elementals, I highly recommend Cold Moon over Babylon.
I'll have to read King's Bag of Bones one of these days. Some great suggestions, Cliff. Good episode!
Thank you so much Jim! Bag of Bones is an excellent book. Happy Reading. 🎃
Thanks, Cliff! You as well.👻
I’m halfway through Gwendolyn Kiste’s recent The Haunting Of Velkwood, and it is soooo good. Kiste once again puts her expert knowledge of gothic lore to work in the service of a story where a subdivision street got pulled beyond death and one of the survivors reenters it twenty years later. There are subtle nods to a bunch of predecessors, and slowly emerging queer representation (something Kiste is always good at). The smooth style and very elegantly unfolding plot remind me of Shirley Jackson and James Tiptree Jr. One of the best things I’ve read this year.
Thank you so much for the recommendation. The Haunting Of Velkwood is actually on my tbr as I have heard so many booktubers speak highly of the book. The premise sounds so intriguing! I would love to hear your thoughts when you finish the story. Hope you are having a wonderful spooky season! 🎃
@@CliffsDarkGems I finished the book and loved it. Kiste has a habit of strong endings, and delivered another one. A bunch of surprises that all fit and resolve things very well, including the final uncertainty on the very last page.
Yes! The Haunting of Velkwood is my favorite read of the year so far.
@@literarylove123 Will hopefully read it next year Jen.
@@literarylove123 Kiste is so, so good, and more people need to read her.
Excellent list, Cliff! I too love The Elementals, Bag of Bones, Ghost Story, The Shining, and Burnt Offerings. I'm ashamed to say I have never read any Clive Barker but I have bought a few of his books recently and look forward to enjoying them. Hi Anita! 👻🎃🖤
Thank you so much Leslie! They are all excellent books. Clive Barker is a fantastic author. I recommend starting with The Books of Blood or Hellbound Heart. Anita says hi. 😀👻🎃🖤
A bunch of good picks!
There’s a really good Japanese movie of Dark Water, and a very good American remake (with Jennifer Connolly, if memory serves). I like both better than the book.
Ghost Story is such a ridiculously good book. So tight it squeaks in four-part harmony.
Thank you so much. I have heard it is a very good movie, but have not seen it yet. I need to give Ghost Story a re-read one day. Hope you are having a good spooky season! 🎃
@@CliffsDarkGems I am. Reading good stuff, watching…entertaining junk, mostly, to be honest. But also some of my favorite gems.
This is a very valuable video! Great list of books.
Thank you so much Michael!
Great selection Cliff. I have read a few of them - Heart Shaped Box I really liked in particular - and obviously The Shining is amazing. I own Coldheart Canyon but haven't read it yet....
Thank you so much Gareth. Heart-Shaped Box is awesome. I highly recommend Clive Barker. Happy Reading. 📚🎃
Hey Cliff, a great list and video.
I loved Bag of Bones, probably in my top 5 Stephen King books.
Thank you so much John! Bag of Bones is a great read. 🎃
Great list man. Some stuff in there that I haven’t read that I’ll definitely check out.
I’m with you on the Haunting of Hill House, it never really did it for me.
I like Haunted by James Herbert a lot. It’s a nice twist on the haunted house trope
Thank you so much Mark! I even read The Haunting of Hill House twice, still did not work for me. I have read Haunted and I'm afraid I found it a little underwhelming. I do like some of Herbert's other novels. Happy Reading! 📚🎃
Thanks for this list! Haunted/ghost stories are my favorite type of horror and I think the ones that sound the best to me are The Willows, Burnt Offerings and The Shining. I loved the movie and that’s really interesting about your thoughts on the casting with Jack Nicholson. You’re right, he already looks like he’s crazy so it would be interesting to read the book and picture someone else in that role lol.
So glad you enjoyed the list Farrah! Haunted stories are not usually my favorite, but these are exceptions. I think you will love all three of those, The Shining is possibly King's scariest novel, in my opinion. Hope you are having a great spooky October! 🎃
@@CliffsDarkGems you too, Cliff and Anita and Layla as well! 🎃👻📚✨
@@bookstalgic Thank you so much! 😀📚👻👻
Nice to see Ghost Story in there. I'm very interested in the Clive Barker as it's not one I know off. Personally I've never got along with the Shinning I do sometimes think I should give it a reread.
Thanks for watching! The Shining is definitely worth a re-read in my opinion.
You sound a little like Boris Karloff
Thank you for watching! I am South African so the accent might sound a little strange.
