11- We make 'DON'T PAT THE CAT' signs and SPY on the locals (from our narrowboat stern)

  • We have had so many enthusiastic dogs visit the boat and at least one a day tries to get onboard. This is not safe for the dog- as cats can attack soft noses and eyes. It's not safe for the cats either depending how cornered and interested the dog is. So we have put up some signs and also a makeshift gate. We'll let you know how that works.
We also are lucky enough to be moored right next to a new family of moorhens and we can spy on them from the stern of our narrowboat, making their nest and hopefully we'll see some chicks real soon.

We are so thrilled that you all like the little documentary about our moorhen friend. Just to update you they have had their chicks now and we have even seen them out and about. We will try and include some proud parenting moments in the future for you all. I was worried that the clip would be too long so thank you for all your lovely support.
The cat signs remain controversial, but to be honest they always are when we show them on camera. Please note at this moment we have had to delete at least 10 comments that were so vile that we couldn't let them through. We believe in the protection of dogs and cats.
Lots of you are mentioning Molly. We loved having Molly travel with us, she was a well trained, smart and enthusiastic dog. Jono told her she wasn't allowed on the boat and so she never did come onboard unless invited. (Then we couldn't get rid of her lol) We have also moored next to Minimal List and George was a perfect gentleman- mostly because neither Munchy nor Alice were tennis balls.
We put signs up because dog owners do not expect to see boats with cats and they think they are exercising their dogs in a safe area. Our boat cats will scratch a dog on the boat. Unfortunately NBH's dog Bella can attest to this. So we say- if your dog is not likely to be able to keep itself from going on a boat- through an open window (yes it has happened many times) then put it on a lead as you pass our boat. What you decide to do is then completely up to you and we feel we have done our part in warning you, so to speak.

I see totally nothing wrong in what you girls say about some people. If I know my dog was a bit nosey I too would put his lead back on and then off when we pass certain things I think he might like too much. It's part of being an owner.

I am so sorry that people feel they can be so demanding when you are being so generous sharing your life with us. Sad! Don't fret...not worth it. Your signs sound reasonable. I almost mentioned Molly (who is just amazing); almost commented, "too bad not all dogs are as well trained as Molly". Mine certainly isn't, although she does have a very healthy respect for what she insists on calling dragons. 😂😷😂

I'm at a loss to understand why anyone would use any of your wonderful vlogs as an excuse to send you messages so vile you have to delete them. I know dog owners can be pretty protective and defensive at times, but seeing your "Cats on board" sign doesn't give them license to vent their spleen on you. This is a time of great stress, fear of the unknown and the need for scapegoats, so your vile and anonymous trolls may be using your lifestyle as a cover for the terror in their own lives. Be assured you are loved and cherished by so many of us out here ladies. Don't engage them. Ignore and block them if you can. Stay well. Stay strong.

Always a happy day when my husband John and I can sit down at supper here in Raleigh NC and watch you ladies on a new vlog. We have 2 cats Gracie and Smokey so we know how you feel about your 2 and their safety. Ours are indoor/outdoor and dare dogs to come on the property! So glad you have a caring narrowboat community as we feel you would have help if needed. We watch many other canal vlogers and so enjoy them as all are different and bring a new perspective to we landlocked viewers. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.

My wife and I used to own and travel on a private railroad car (carriage) with two cats. We had to post signs on the doors at each end warning railroad staff about using caution when opening the doors. (The railroad crew required 24 hour access to the rear of the train.)

@@t1n4444 No, i never did any sort of Vlog on private car trips. It was in the 1970's until the very early 90's when video equipment was expensive and very bulky. I don't even have any photos. All my photo albums were destroyed when Hurricane Andrew blew my house away in 1992. There was a video produced by Pentrex in 1985 called "Private Varnish Roundup". It's been long out of production, but was filmed at the 1985, American Association of Private Rail Car Owners convention in Portland, Oregon. It featured our car and many of the others gathered in Portland that year. I think AAPRCO still publishes "Private Varnish" magazine. They should be on Google.

I loved the exchange between the two ducks at the end. The one duck brings home a piece of straw to show it to his mate. She says "What's this? This is no good." He says " No, no it's fine see it will work!" Back and forth they go.She, having the final say, says "no." Then, in the end he finds a HUGE piece to take back to his mate!! So full of PRIDE LOL. I love nature! Also really loved the biscuit eating scene, mostly cause I have started watching the Great British Bakeoff and I am obsessed with the biscuit episodes. Great video ladies! Cheers.

Saturday evening one cat watched your riveting video of Munchie and Alice. Today I had to rewind it four times so the other cat could watch Alice walk across the top of your Narrowboat. I don’t think he liked the white birds snatching food off the water. It was great. Excellent footage. Stay well.

One of my favourite videos so far 2oHearts since this lockdown began. A little more video of Queen Munchie and Tsarina Alice were clearly the dose of cats and normal that we all need and crave. I too could watch the Moor Hens all day, but its 2am, our time, and there are 3 species of owls competing who can be the loudest in the trees outside our bedroom window. We are on a acre of land in a 60 year old neighborhood surrounded by mature trees. Today our sycamore tree had 2 loud immature bald eagles boasting their talents. And this evening ..... the hummingbirds came back. Nature is enjoying this pandemic reprieve. All our love from Richmond, Virginia at the Flag House..

Ok, I am answering your coot vs. moorhen question without going to my bird books so let's see what I remember. I used to be a twitcher many years ago. A coot has white markings above its bill, is entirely black bodied, and has longish yellow legs as it is more of a wader. A moorhen has the lovely red markings and maybe a red bill. Has the gorgeous white and grey markings on its wings and black legs. May I say this video was just lovely! I love the canals and beyond but this was very peaceful and beautiful! Now, to look up coots and morrhens...

Great video, especially the moorhens bringing in “supplies” to build their nest.
As for dog owners being upset over your cat signs, well, they don’t seem to be responsible pet owners. I’ve had dogs and cats in the past. After a day or two as the dogs and cats got accustomed to each other, sometimes with a stern verbal reminder to the dogs, they all became friends. It’s really the responsibility of the pet parents to make sure their charges behave in a socially acceptable manner, both within the family, and with pets of another family.

Nice idea to make a gate. You never know how a dog will act around cats or strangers, and also what if one of you come out the door and get surprised by a dog on the boat? Dogs have to be on leashes in my neighborhood, so if one gets in my yard that means no owners around because the dog broke out of it's yard and is just running free - that's always a bad situation for my cats.

      You make a good point.
We just want everyone to be safe - including all animals - and hopefully the gate will help with this.

Very relaxing video today ladies. Quite agree with watching the Moorhens all day. Coot has a white beak and face with dark plumage, Moorhen Red face and beak with dark plumage. I think the Moorhens beak may have a yellow or white tip.

Look Dear, I’ve brought you a reed.
You call that a reed? Look, I can bend it with just a stare. Look!
    Look where.
    There!
But you just snapped it in the water.
    Look it’s useless.
Alright you go and get a reed.
    ...several minutes later...
Look this is what I meant. It’s so big I have to carry it over my shoulder!

The baby gate idea is a great one. It's just a shame more dog owners aren't a little more vigilant and considerate. I would have been mortified if my old dog had barged into someone's narrowboat! He was only off lead in dog parks. You shouldn't need to be paranoid for your own cats on your own boat.

We wonder if the dogs are getting braver because we’ve been around for longer than usual and are then just part of their daily routine.

Loved the moorhen footage so much, as well as the water color work in progress. I'm hoping you will be making prints of this one, and would like to put in an order right now if you do. Many people have mentioned how calming they find these lockdown vlogs, and I agree so much. Thank you so much for sharing your piece of the world.

Someone with artistic talent is framing the composition of the moorhen shots so very well. Hmm . . . wonder who? :) And someone with the Welsh apples-and-cream complexion and the scroll saw talent is making me jealous. And not for the saw! I've never seen someone make such a nice cat circle only using their elbow for a compass. Talented, intelligent and beautiful - BOTH of you.

The wildlife seems to be getting closer to us all now we have less cars on the road you can really here the bird song in the mornings really nice. As always stay safe and see you in the next.
