ZOOM G6: Demo & Review (2 demo songs: clean & distorted tones| comparison vs Ampero, GE250, MG30)

- In this video we will share a demo review of the Zoom G6. First of all we will hear the unit in action in a double demo song, then we will describe the G6 also comparing it to other amp modeling pedalboards like the Ampero, the NUX MG 30 and the Mooer GE 250, then we will hear more sounds hearing also other amps then the one used in the demo song and finally I will give you my 2 cents. Im a big fan of Zoom but I dont think this could ever replace my beloved G5 as a mad scientist fx lab (and its built like a tank!). I like the IR loading but dislike almost every other decision they made with this. I think I'll look into the MG30 as modeler/IR loader and keep my trusty G5 as crazy fx. Thank you Leo!

I was thinking to buy this unit, but i prefer to wait to see its price fall down and see about new firmware update, like you are saying it's overpriced right now, Zoom did a big mistake with so hi price, i know them like great value for money product, but with G11 and G6 they can't challenge competitors at same price range they have chosen . I have a small G1 Four wich is an amazing cheap unit but i can't think to upgrade to this g6 now for the reason i said before.
About amps on your videos BG it means Mesa Boogie, HW it means HiWatt, same on my G1 Four.

I just bought it! And sadly I will return it; I’m a big fan of Zoom but this do not complete my expectations. I must say the Bluetooth port could not exist and the thing is the same. I have the BTA-1 device; The app doesn’t work at all! Anyway, I just wanted to share this. Thank you for this amazing video! 👍🏼

finally my long waited G6 preview of you.. come out. as i expected, good and detail as always. thanks to you i'm more grateful with my current Zoom G5n as it's actually the same quality as G6. bad move from zoom.. just change in interface,, not fundamental features like : pararel/series signal chain, more DSP power, more pedals/amps, new software lab... why zoom.. why?!

I was really hopeful for this product. It looks cool and is at a good price point. It seems like it even sounds really good. I don't mind the micro USB at all and am really confused as to why everyone hates them. I have usb c stuff. I have micro usb stuff. It's whatever. It all works. The real problem that both you and Jonathan Koh's review have shown is just how limited the dsp is. Most people would probably be ok with an amp, ir, reverb delay and modulation. it's rare I go more than that on my own patches on other products. But sometimes I do when song in a set needs it. This would really struggle in those situations. Parallel signal paths? It's just not able.

One has to look for the modeler that suits their needs. Hence this review which is great by the way. The main thing must surely be a good sound. Then perhaps choice of amps and effects, then perhaps functionality and sturdyness. Also to note with these modelers is how they sound through a PA or amp. They often sound good through headphones but not when used in a live situation. Then it depends on your guitar and pickups. Regards functionality, once you have navigated your way to a good half dozen sounds, even if not easy, you don't usually need much more and can concentrate on playing and writing.

Come ti avevo scritto in un altro video ho appena venduto una mooer Ge200 e volevo andare su una NuxMg30 ma vedendo qualche video mi era venuto in mente anche questa G6. Non ho bisogno di grandi cose ( effetti in parallelo per esempio) e di questa mi piace che abbia piu tasti . Davvero non mi sondecidere con la Mg 30 perche come prezzo ( usate ) costano praticamente uguale. Dammi una mano 😂😂😂😂

E' difficile darti un'opinione "Bianco o nero"... a me come forma, features, etc. piace di più la MG 30, ma è un gusto piuttosto personale ed anche con la Zoom puoi fare buone cose. Non conoscendoti, non saprei davvero trovare il motivo Killer per cui dirti di scegliere una specifica pedaliera. Mi spiace.

La cosa che mi resta difficile è capire quale marca abbia le simulazioni ampli migliori . La Mooer a me suonava fredda per esempio. Cosa che invece Nux non sembra. La G6 mi sembra più " plasticosa" . La mia indecisione è tutta qui. Se avessi la certezza di chi ha le migliori simulazioni sarebbe tutto più facile . Grazie ancora !
The old Zooms sounded cool with better ways to shape the tones.. The G5n however is where their layout got in the way. Even the sound became less organic and more fizzy and compressed.
I think it is wiser to save more and then shop around.

Thanks for the nice review as always. I am confused between this and Valeton GP200. The latter seems to be less expensive and would cover most of my requirements, but doesn't offer gapless patch switching, as I saw in your other video. Is that the case with Zoom G6 as well? Also, can the expression pedal be assigned globally to Wah in both devices?

Hi Michael, well... I'm more used to the GE 250 as I have it since more than an year...where I have the G6 since few weeks...I really like the profiling option of the GE 250 that for me is a killer feature...but in order to give you a ponderated opinion...I should do a video comparison ... :)

Hi, thank you very much, your support is really important for me! Do you mean the new NUX MG30 (not the MG20), right? Well, I think it's a very good unit for price, with some interesting features not commonly available in this price range, like parallel effects and the two extra footswiches. As regards the looper...unfortunately I cannot answer, as don't use it so often...I'm sorry...maybe in the future a comparison just focused on lopper would be interesting...

Wod have liked to hear the drum loops .and if they were updated .. but it looks like they r the same .. another con ..
. and zoom should have had a feature to import outside drum loops as well...
But again the Dsp issue of 9 effects continues from the previous mods.right from G5n .. they should be able to give the user 9 blocks .. without having that issue
But it seems much better than the G11
Zoom lacks the patience I think to sit and work on a final product .. ..
I have my G5n .. low cost and does the job .

HI, Leo! Coming late to the party. I notice that you use both IR and cabs in your patches. My understanding is that you would use one or the other. Am I mistaken? Or you just used them that way on purpose to get the tone you wanted? Thanks. Great tracks, btw!
Hi Mario, I typically use the IRs when I want "that" specific tone. Even because I've done myself some IRs of my favourite cabs, and therefore I much prefer to use those IRs. Furthermore I use the same IR when I want to compare modellers one against the other, in order to remove from the equation the mic positioning, which would mess up the comparison.

hi mr leo gibson, I have a question about IR in pedalboards. lets say I have a cheap cabinet like with HH speakers that are very muddy and dark sounding, does it make sense to use an IR from the pedalboard to make the speakers to sound any brighter?
Hi, mmm no, I don't think so...if you use a cabinet you have the remove the IR from the pedalboard, other wise is like sending a cabinet to another cabinet...it does not sound good, in my opinion unless you use FRFR speaker, like the monitors of a recording studio. And by the way, if you are sending the out of the pedalboard to an amp, you should remove the whole amp section from the signal chain of the pedalboard.

hi again mr leo, I have another question: since these new small pedalboards sound so good, I was thinking that for a small to medium live rig, instead of carry al this heavy, delicate and very EXPENSIVE gear like an amp, pedals, and kilometers of cables, wouldnt it be better to just use a small pedalboard like the ampero and connect it to a small power amp?? (like the seymour duncan power stage wich is a 170w!!! power amp the size of a beer can), I could fit everything in a small backpack and be ready to play in a couple of minutes, and if anything breaks it wont be a tragedy to replace. in your opinion, would a small pedalboard like the ampero be good enough to something like this? I mean 170w is more than enough to blow up a small pub, but would it sound any good too?
Absolutely. You can go directly in the mixing desk and then in the PA...you don't even need the power stage. Another solution is to use an FRFR speaker...

@@LeoGibsonGtr yeah, but you know, around here most small gigs use microphoned cabs to the mixer instead of line connection to mixer for reasons I will never understand, i guess is becouse most players use pedals instead of digital effects... thats just how it is... thankyou leo! this has been very helpful!!!

Hi, yes it is an interesting topic...I never did such video...It is a little bit complicated as I should send automatic midi signal from my computer in order to avoid differences derived from the way I pressed the foot-switch ... and not all the units have midi input...I still have to figure out how to properly do this test...

Ciao Marco, dipende un pò da quello che ti serve. Se ti serve assolutamente il foot switch in più e il touch screen, vai con la zoom.
Se i 100€ circa in più sono un problema, e/o vuoi poter gestire catene di effetti più complesse e articolate, vai con la NUX. Poi ti suggerirei di fare un check se gli ampli presenti nelle 2 unità sono quelli che vuoi tu. infine, per me la simulazione del JCM 800 della NUX è fatta molto bene, mi piace molto e mi sembra meglio di quella della Zoom...ma qui entriamo nei gusti personali.

Probably I would go with the NUX...please also take into consideration that I have the G6 since few days and the NUX since many months and that NUX send me the MG 30 to try it out (I'm not payed or sponsored by them by any means....)

Hi, unfortunately I don't have the G5N, therefore I can't tell...G6 should be a new generation of modeler...but I'm not sure if it sounds better...

Main feature of ZOOM, as for me - ultimate userfriendly interface with many screens and knobs. Easy and quick to use. Pedalboard mode. But where this feаture in G6 ? I am big fan of ZOOM, but this model is missfire, as for me. I rather will take G5n ))) I am owner of G3xn

Hi Dario, if you are referring to the comping part of the first song, it is done double tracking and then hard panning left and right the two tracks. That approach create that nice big sound, as playing two times the same riff, there is a nice and natural chorus effect derived from the timing difference between the two recordings (as been human the two tracks can not be perfectly in time)...I always do it, even with real amps... so why not doing it also with modelers.... :)...

Should be $300 US or less. It's a nice update, but the price is ridiculous for Zoom. A misstep that can be easily be remedied by a price cut like they are doing with the G11. You can get the Ampero and Nux, for much less and they are probably as good. Zoom no longer is alone in this segment. Lots of toys out there.

Hi, I think it depends on your needs, for instance the NUX has the possibility to use parallel effects that the G6 does not have or, without considering the IRs the NUX has more mic parameters. On the other hand the G6 has the touch sensitive screen, or the possibility to put many instances of the same effect in the signal chain. So, it depends.

It's pretty hard to answer....as the perfect unit does not exist...but we have to search the one that better suit your needs. If you just want effects, you may want to check out the TC Plethora X5 or the Line 6 HX effects. If you want boss effects, maybe the BOSS GT 1000 core, which has also amp simulations.

After the NUX MG-30 showed some high frequency noise in clean sounds with delay, and had a loose display, which was probably shipping damage, I returned it. I would have already bought an Ampero, if Line 6 hadn't decided to make a Pod Go Wireless...

My personal opinion Zoom still can't cope with creating good distortion/overdrive.... This one sounds nearly identical like my zoom 9001 but it was in the prehistoric era so it was highly forgiveable. The rest is perfect like every other Zoom. To me it always sounds as it came from a box or like a bit of nosy tone.... It practically kills your guitar's character. It is a good gadget anyway with some "BUT"

It might be me but I would prefer if in your comparison demos each section of a certain effect would be longer because by the time I realize it is a new one and start analyzing the sound you skip to another one. I really like the way you play and all your songs, it is just something from me. Keep up with these great videos.
