I've always been so intrigued by this laptop and the company. Every time my kid comes near my MacBook and I think they might spill a drink on it, or just touch it with their sticky hands I think I should have bought a framework. The ability to easily repair, replace and upgrade is so tempting. At the time though, the 11th Gen Intel was no match for a M1 Pro.
i have this exact same version and my battery last about 7 hours from 75% to 15% when doing lightwork like reading pdf or uisng chrome. Its power ussage is about 6wh
The "fitment issue" near the power button you mentioned is a consciously designed feature according to framework. It is a place to easily split the top cover from the bottom when opening up the device. That corner is where you pry with the spudger end of the screwdriver they supplied.
@@SpiceVader It showed up 3 hours ago. OMG it's *TINY* (LOL). I'm booted into Fedora on a 1 TB expansion card and everything works out of the box. Thanks for the distraction while I waited.
Heck yeah, you got one too. Good to see you going over it. EDIT: I'm stupid. You said which batch you were in. SECOND: Holy crap, you got the EXACT same system I did. R5, DIY, no charger, and same RAM kit from Amazon. I got a clear bezel (which they don't offer any more, yields and whatever) and had an SSD laying around. I'm getting around the weird inconsistencies of Kubuntu but want to install SteamOS (yup, as a desktop system) as soon as it's on more than just the Deck.
To your edits: nice! Let me know what you think of it. I'm going to try out Chimera OS on a separate drive and see how it runs. Maybe we can beat ETA Prime to it 😂
The solidigm p41 plus drives don’t self encrypt, so before you store anything sensitive on these drives activate Bitlocker on Windows or Luks on Linux. Or never ever sell the drive because people could read that unencrypted data.
My partner got this laptop last month too, we picked up cheap 25€ 2x8GB RAM seconnd hand and a P31 Gold for 60€. Ours has a lot of issues (basically any video playback and sometimes even booting up crashes while charging, and on battery the laptop works perfectly). Support will fix it for us though, I am sure. Very happy with it, even if we have to charge it while turned off lol
That's interesting to know. In my testing I've found that certain chargers that claim 65w USB-PD just don't work. I have 2 that work great a GoalZero GaN 65w and a JSAUX 65w. 2 that don't work are Whitestone 65W GaN and the HAGIBIS 65w GaN Switch dock/charger.
@@SpiceVader I have the charger directly from framework so I don't think that's the issue, although I do have a 25W phone charger with USB PD3.0 that SHOULD work but doesn't, so more firmware fixes are underway
@@FR4M3Sharma We ended up returning the laptop and got a full refund, Very happy with their customer service/support. I have heard that most chargers work much better now, so there shouldn't be compatibility issues anymore.
Thanks for the video! I have similar concerns about the hinge as you had and I'm glad I found someone how cared about this too, as I'm too picky. How is the hinge and the top comparing to Dell XPS? Is it too wobbly? Does the hinge handle the weight properly? I know that most XPSes (at least most recent ones) are pretty sturdy so if you can compare from your point of view it would be awesome!
As far as structure and durability go, I feel like the XPS is a little more sturdy. The Framework hinge is good and it doesn't wobble too much, but is slightly more "bouncy" than the Dell. I have seen some people have issues with the keyboard marking up the screen when carrying it in a backpack over a period of time. So I've started to put a microfiber cloth in between whenever I travel with it. Thanks for the comment!
Still, I am concerned about the springiness display. I do work a lot in trains and am concerned about fatigue because the eyes have to adjust constantly to the wobbling display.
I would rather have had a uniform platform base to have a couple more plugins if possible. I also am not a fan of smaller than 14.1” displays…. 15.6” being my preference. Starting to look at the 16 series for my first framework… thanks for the video otherwise!
What is the display brightness like in bright rooms or outdoors? I heard other reviews say it struggles in those situations but sadly only one review I saw mentioned anything about display brightness If this claim is true then I may not buy this laptop despite how awesome this modular system is ;-;
It's sufficiently bright. I usually use it at 70% in a bright room and only crank it to 100% if watching a video. I tested using it in a car at 100% and it's decent. When I went outside in direct sunlight it was hard to see, but that's not a usual use case for me. My S22 Ultra with it's adaptive brightness it is not.

Also going with the grey bezel and clear keyboard. Adds a level of cleanness to it
Shame it was only for a while. I really would've loved to get it in the future when I could I buy it.
@@FR4M3Sharma No that's permanent. The only thing that's temporary was the clear bezel

nice video , have been looking for the ryzen 5 version

Unfortunately the Framework does NOT support XMP for RAM, so you need to make sure the core clock speed is what you want.
