They beat them with the sticks from a very young age so they learn to become afraid of anyone who has one. So the keepers tap them in the face so they will stay in check. Let's be real here. You are not going to achieve this level of friendliness towards humans without either drugs or very VERY strict training. We all know how dangerous even some dogs can be, both for humans and other dogs, if not given the right treatment and training. Now imagine the training and attention required to make an animal that is solitary by nature and genetically still a wild animal behave like this. Best case scenario is that the stick will be used to discipline the tigers when they misbehave, but it WILL be used. You can't seriously believe that love and attention are the only things required to reliably achieve this behavior.
