How to transfer your old tapes to your computer- Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus

- I've tried other methods to transfer my old video tapes to my computer but all have failed. Paying to get it done was expensive, so I decided to try this. It worked... sort of.
It worked on my 12 year old computer running Windows 10 but not my newer computer.
I purchased this on Amazon for $39.99 cdn in Nov 2019 but now the price is around $70-80. I would get an older cheaper version of this software. - Наука та технологія
I've had this same product for about 8 years now. It works when it wants to, to put it simply. You may have got lucky with yours but if you search online reviews of this product, you'll see people including myself having issues with the video signal. When it wants to work it works, but 99% of the time only the audio works. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to take the risk. Be warned it won't just plug in & work perfectly all the time & it's a complete waste of money.
I agree it's a really finicky program. I'm just lucky I had an old computer. I transferred over 30 to 40 GB of tape to my hard drive and it worked flawlessly with my 10-year-old computer. Strange.
@@LadybugAdventures Yeah i mostly used it on my old laptop but tried it again last few days on my new laptop. Simply because i realized when i used it in the past, the sound slowly went out of sync as the recordings went on. I'm yet to try it on a long tape on my new laptop which i will do soon.
I have a the solution for you. Read my comment above. I will have the files you need compiled and I’ll include fixes for issues I run into on my website in a few days. Come back to my comment in about 2-3 days when I have it all worked. I figured out how to get it working.
I used to have a Digital 8 camera, which is quite a rare format nowdays. I once fried the camera's firewire port and couldn't retrieve my videos at full quality. So I sold my camera online as is, saying that firewire wasn't working, but everything else was fine. Sold it and immediately found someone else selling a fully working Digital 8 for less than what I just sold my broken one for. And I finally got a chance to dump all my videos using an old Sound Blaster Live soundcard that back in those days came with a firewire port. It was such a strange format used for many things. It could be a 400mbps network back when 100mbps was top speed for CAT5. It worked with cameras. It worked with data. And it was insanely fragile and constantly fried chips when hot plugging. That lead to a whole ton of semi-detective equipment still floating around. So finding a good working order DV equipment is hard, and I notice that many of my original recordings from the 90's have already degraded. Those digital tapes aren't going to outlast their owners.
That's why I decided to move my tapes over to digital/hard drive. Tapes and the players won't last much longer.
Thanks for good advise and instructions; using old computer helped me to do recording properly. My one was 14 years old and running on Windows 7. Just do not forget to update your Roxio software.
Thanks for your frank comments, especially the Canadian aspect
my experience dates even further back
I had 8mm movie tapes on about 10 reels that I wanted to keep
I basically had just one choice to let a professional shop handle it
and they did a pretty good job,
saved the movies on a USB stick that I DLed onto HD
good idea to save digital copy
cheers
Wow, love to see footage from the 8 mm film

Thank you. It was a great help
DV = digital video. The firewire port on your camera is to transfer that digital video to a computer. All you needed was a cheap ebay firewire card and it would have worked fine. No need for analog video capture.
So I have the same roxio product and on my laptop it was having an awful echoing noise coming from my screen the video would show but the audio just wasn’t working. Would the problem be my CPU on the laptop or the RAM?
I still can't figure out how to use this!! It's supposed to transfer to USB but I can't figure out how to select that option :(
I have been using Roxio Easy VHS to DVD3 Plus for a few weeks, and I am looking for clarification about the various choices--compression, etc., under the Advanced options in Export.
Not looking to conserve storage space-I have lots- so my number 1 goal is the best quality I can produce and a file format that is unlikely to go obsolete before I do! :-)
Are there reasons why you chose H.264, NTSC, etc.? (BTW, my software has PAL as the default-isn't that more for Europe? Or does that matter anymore?)
I really want to do this right, and if I need to re-do some of them, that's OK.
It has been hard to find anyone with knowledge of this, and I feel like I have to halt until I can go forward with confidence in my choices and process.
Thanks to anyone who can jump in here for me!
I have the same questions as you. Were you able to find out? I have been trying to see if there is a difference between pal and ntsc
Did you try downloading and installing the newest DRIVERS and SOFTWARE from the ROXIO website?
Cool video I always wondered if those things worked well especially the Ebay ones. I did something like that years ago when Walmart starting selling dvd recorders. You could plug up your camera and play it in real time and record with chapters.
Off topic this is the problem I recently encountered. I had recorded hours of 4k footage of my sons football practices and games to make highlight reals to give to the other parents at the end of the season. In my mind I guess I thought DVD's where good quality but boy was I wrong I guess I forgot they where only 720p and I had to look that up lol. That was fine because I thought I finally have a use for that bluray burner and that worked as better quality although I wasnt sure if everyone had a player. I'm sure most people have an xbox one but those do not play burned bluray disks (smh) anyways long story short I just set up a dropbox account and then let them download it.
Thanks for the video sorry for rambling lol
Just read this! LOL. Sounds like an adventure I would have set myself on!!!
What is the minimum RAM and SSD you'd recommend for the computer that is capturing the video?
I purchased this (not the Plus version) many years ago and just now thinking about giving it a go. One question though, once you do the transfer, which is in real time, you have to do an export. How long does that take? I saw there were some compression and interlace settings, but you said this part takes long which worries me a bit. At the highest quality settings, does the export take longer to complete than the actual real time transfer? If so, I might buy something newer that doesn’t require compression/interlacing.
Don’t remember exactly. I would look at some other products if possible as this one is a little finicky.
@@LadybugAdventures - Good looking out, thank you.
Interesting problem. Definitely sounds like a codec issue, I haven't had to worry about DirectX for the longest time. I'd say try using other media players like VLC, I sometimes find what doesn't play or play properly with the included Windows media player, VLC can.
Thanks. Yeah I use VLC most of the time. I've only had problems when it tries to play a 120fps footage.
Dammit, I missed the entire video because I fell asleep listening to the intro music.
I use this video to fall asleep to every night!!!
The software is not working on my Pc, I mean it shows no signal but it's working on my laptop...what should I do?
So why don't you use the laptop? It is some weird software and so out of date.
@@LadybugAdventures I am but my pc is much more Powerful and the during export my laptop CPU heats very and is utilised 100%
It wasn't directx9 btw. I installed the software so it would work with 9 but it doesn't help anything
Well that sucks. I don't know what the magical combination or issues are then. Basically I'm never getting rid of this one computer just in case I need it for this program.
Ladybug Adventures curious if there’s any way you might be able to email me the file so I can see what’s different? And maybe spread it around if it also works for me to others. I also kind of want to look into it and see if I can figure out why it would only work with your install and then I can spread it to others on amazon
Ladybug Adventures sorry I just realized.. *copy it I don’t want your whole only file 😂 I just want to see if it will work on my desktop vs some older laptops
Does this device work for standard VHS tapes?
Yes it is designed for VHS tapes as well. But like I said in the video there are some software compatibility issues. I trade other people have problems with this as well. Mine still works but I caution you as I've heard otherwise.
I have two types of digital converters: one of them is ROXIO video capture VHS for Mac for very old VHS tapes.
When I view and especially record on the High Quality and Medium Quality, the videos show difficulty in viewing. The pictures move slow or demonstrate a glitch. However, when viewing and recording in Low Quality, they run and sound smooth.
Can you tell me why I have this problem?
No idea. I hope you can find the answer. This is some strange hardware/software.
I cant get this darn program to work. It wont save the videos to my computer. Keep getting an error message. I have deleted it and reloaded it and then it took 2 hrs to save it to my computer. When i try to delete all files of the program from my computer i get error:0x80004002
is there a digital software version available. I don't have a dvd drive on my computer
That I don't know. You'd have to check their website
Do you still need the file?
I have a working one now
interesting vlog 👍
Thanks! Appreciate it!
HAHAHAHAHA! HE SAID DOODOO🤣💩 6:31
$80.00 is nothing for a hardware/software combo that lets you transfer old tapes to a PC (or Mac). I would happily pay $300.00 if I found a reliable product that produced great-looking digital files.
Yo if you’re here because you can’t get it to work because you don’t have a CD player I’ll have the file that works on my website in a few days. I’ll post info below this comment. Just download and run and let windows do it’s thing. Scan it first because you shouldn’t trust some random guy on the internet as well, ever. But I won’t pass on any BS, I’m just copying and pasting the file there. Then when you play it it’ll install the required files it needs to actually play. It took me weeks to figure it out and I’ll pass it on to you and hopefully with instructions if I run into any problems.
I have noticed that tapes around 30-40 years tend to be spotty. They sometimes just show noise and say no signal. But I’ve only ran about 5 so I’ll keep looking into it. Again right below is the website where you can download it and hopefully find any of the fixes for issues I run into.
I have a problem ...couple years ago i get "ligthcapture"... every thing went well...i try again last week ....i cant!!! I can see the video image running but at the moment of recording image Freeze ..the video timer start but the megabits counter stays 0.00....so nothing ITS recorded....i take tha program out of the computer ...install It again. Same thing....any idea ...It Will be appreciate... thanks
I had a similar problem but with the audio being captured but not video. like I did in the video I had to install this program on a much older computer. Some people thought it was because the DirectX 12 was not compatible with this older program. Therefore the older computer worked with this older program. if you can find someone else's computer to install this program on you can try that.
Do you need the correct files or is it actually playing? Because if you have an older computer I don’t know if it will work because I got it running on a Ryzen 9 3950X 16 core and a 2080TI on the latest version of Windows. So I don’t know how well it would run on older studd
Can you edit the vhs tapes before you export them? Is it easy to edit?
I dont' recall if you can.
Wtf WHY🤦♂️
Just export your tapes then edit.
Is that the av in/out port???
👍
So one needs to have a VHS player to use this. I don't have one.
You need something to play the tape.
It's not working at all. I bought this in May 2020 and this product is junk.
Yeah there's been some hit and miss with this product. I found my work around. I guess I just got lucky.
Yo do you need a fix? I figured out the issue and I’m tryna pass this on
Northland Gaming
Thanks a lot bro I just took it to a professional I got it done but I really appreciate you
Idiotai Apologetics damn I just found the fix as well. Just right now
Anyone else having trouble just installing the software?? Utter trash.
