POPEYE | Commodore 64 (1986)

- Popeye, for the Commodore 64. The object of the game is to collect hearts and deliver them to Olive Oyle to keep her 'lovemeter' topped up.
Points are scored for hearts delivered. Bluto, UFO's, witches etc try to stop you. Some hearts are behind locked doors so you've got to find the right key to open the door and get them while others can be grabbed simply by jumping up to get them. Somewhere there's a fruit machine for which you need to collect 'spin' items.
The game boasts a 'clever multidimensional effect' which allows Popeye to go behind the scenery and go through doors.

the big sprites made an impression and always loved seeing familiar characters in games as a kid
Those BIG characters were always really impressive in games... especially with these Don Priestley style graphics. I liked cartoon adaptation games too 😇🕹️👌
Manager: How big can you make game sprites?
Don: Yes.
This game has a surreal element to it. The familiar characters with weird stuff like UFOs, dragons and giant bugs. I just liked exploring and finding new screens. The lack of music for most of it and permanent night sky gave it a the same eeiry feeling the earlly Dizzy games had.
Likewise, I purely loved the free roaming exploration of games, especially where there is nice locations to discover. I had a similar feeling when playing Don Priestleys other games such as 'Trap Door' and 'Mad Flunky'... some really great locations 😇🕹️👌
As a kid, I Loved this game. Back in 2002, as an adult, I was able to purchase an Atari 5200 that came with this game. After 1 week, I put the Atari & everything that came with it back up on an auction site, that is known from *Bay to *Bay, if you know what I mean. The game really sucked on this Atari 5200, but on the C64, Popeye the arcade version, was more fun!
I really enjoyed the arcade version, that's also on the channel. Great game - the link will be in end totles of this video 😇🕹👌
Glad i found this channel, this takes me 40 years back as i got a commodore in 1984 at age 7 and i have been a gamer ever since.
Fantastic, glad you found the channel! Yeah I played my first Commodore in 1982 and have been going ever since... the greatest buzz of nostalgia is to play all these games once again 😇🕹️👌
I didn't know about this version, the graphics seem pretty good, if somewhat slow. I remember playing the heck out of the other more arcade style Popeye game.
I loved playing the original Popeye from Parker Bros and still enjoy a quick go whenever I see it in the arcades too. This one is a decent little game if you enjoy other similar titles such as 'Trap Door' or 'Mad Flunky' 😇🕹️👌
I had this game back in the day. I thought it was super slow also back then (when was OK to wait 5 minutes for a game to load.)
Yeah it is a very sluggish game, thus was the style of the Don Priestley games... great graphics and colour, just needed that little bit of extra speed 😇🕹️👌
I actually really liked this when I was 15 but then again I liked BC Billlol
I love the daft feel of BC Bill, going around whacking things with your club haha. That's on the list to do someday 😇🕹👌
I also immediately wanted to write about the Trap Door similarities.
However, in real life it would be a real pain if you have melon forearms in combination with macaroni upper arms.
Haha very true 😇🕹️👌
One of the few C64 games I finished. Slow, but weirdly playable.
Thats the beauty of the Commodore 64 - there was always something for everybody and while this may have been a little sluggish to play I am glad you enjoyed it and managed to complete it 😇🕹️👌
Never played this version of Popeye but played that other version a lot.😊
looks like everyone is having a seizure, but it has its charm
Haha when you put it that way, yeah... looks like everyone has come down with a slight case of diarrhoea or something 😇🕹️👌
While I'm normally an advocate of 2D sprites, a game like this - with its attempted depth - would likely benefit hugely from a 2.5D modern presentation (including the fact it'd probably run smoother too).
Was an ambitious piece of programming thats for sure, but the speed hampered the gameplay somewhat 😇🕹️👌
Looks very similar to trap door. Not many games used characters on screen instead of sprites, as you can see it’s much more slow. I remember changing the character set for graphics and trying to fit it to the two colors per character (foreground and background color). You can see this when the character moves over other background characters.
Certainly very ambitious programming thats for sure - hampered only with the overall game speed 😇🕹️👌
I loved this game!
Brilliant... I knew there would be some who love this game, as graphically it certainly has a decent appeal 😇🕹️👌
The only C64 game I can think of that looks and runs exactly the same on the ZX Spectrum.. that much have been some feat of programming!
Ohhh there were a good few Speccy ports where graphically not much changed and that those games always came with poor general satisfaction for us C64 owners 😆🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer haha well this is true. Was thinking more the other way around. Can’t think of many that looked passable on the Speccy but really not for the C64 but this one (and Trapdoor for that matter) is good graphically on the C64 and a total achievement (especially for 1986) on the ZX. I’ve still got my original copy from WH Smith’s for my 128K machine I had as a kid.
Those larger than life sprites were certainly something. They were a bit too large, tbh. I did enjoy discovering the world in this one. Never figured out what to do. Never finished it either. Doesn't matter. I'll watch a longplay. Nice memory.
Good memories all the same but yeah the characters are HUGE in this game - a trademark programming style from Priestley 😇🕹️👌
I have played the original Arcade version of POPEYE on the Commodore 64 back my former elementary school in Myyrmäki, Vantaa (Finland 🇫🇮) in the early 1990's 😹😺👍🕹️.
And it was absolutely brilliant 😺👍🕹️.
It's amazing, this POPEYE game
reminds me of the Piranha games,
THE TRAP DOOR and FLUNKY,
on my Commodore 64 😹👍🕹️.
It may be slow and difficult 😹,
but if i ever see it at some flea market
or game store, i will consider of buying it and playing it 😸😺👍🕹️.
Absolutely, Trap Door mentioned as same programmer as well with Mad Flunky 👌 all those are also on the channel. Great games 😇🕹👌
Graphically really abgefahren! 👍😉
Thise huge sprites!! A trademark of Don Priestley 😇🕹👌
I've never seen this version. I'm going to have to try it.
Definitely worth a try, however I get the feeling the sluggish speed of the game might be off-putting 😇🕹️👌
I loved this game, it was solid...but felt kinda atariey for some reason. I never found the ending, and as usual had no instruction booklet to help out. Popeye was still fun and we would revisit it from time to time
That was the case with these Don Priestley titles, there was no indicator on where to go or what to do haha. I remember getting stuck loads on Trap Door too back when I was a kid... had no idea how to make the recipes 😇🕹️👌
Excellent game looks easy but you have to concentrate
It can be a little sluggish at times, a bit like Trap Door and Mad Flunky... where if you hold the joystick down too long you can easily walk into trouble. Still, I enjoyed it back when I was a kid 😇🕹👌
It ain't easy at all! I never could finish the thing
@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yep you're not wrong there
I should have known it was the same guy. Looks exactly like trapdoor. I prefer trapdoor though. It's way too hard to evade bluto in this!
I remember first playing Trap Door and being completely hooked, even though I'd usually eventually fall into the Trap Door itself!! Haha, the sequel was wayyy too tough as well 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I never played the sequel! But I would have liked to the first one was cool. Get me a can of worms! Lol
I mostly play turnbased games nowdays, then it’s okay for me to be the slugish part of gaming 😂
I like games like that too, can take your time and even have a rest every now and then hehe 😇🕹👌
I loved the other Popeye game on the C64. I played it all the time. I never got around to playing this one, though. I'm tempted to give it a whirl... although like you said, it looks a bit sluggish.
Yeah the original Parker Bros versiion was the one I played mostly as a kid too - but this one is definitely worth playing, if you can put up with the sluggish speed 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Thanks! I'll give it a try sometime then. 🙂
I've never seen this Popeye game before, it looks 'a bit' too confusing for me 🙂
It could seem like there was a lot going on at once, especially with the other Don Priestley game, 'Trap Door'.... which didn't give you much clues as to what to do next - mostly trial and error 😇🕹️👌
I never liked this game as a kid. It was slow as molassas and I felt ugly as sin. Especially as I loved the arcade Popeye and it's c64 port, this game felt almost....offensive to me back then. I didn't know Popeye and The Trap Door were programmed by the same man but once you pointed it out I can see it clearly. One can also tell that Trap Door came out later after the programmer had honed his craft as it was far FAR superior to Popeye.
True... Trap Door definitely seemed more 'polished', however it was still as you say... 'Slow as mollasses' which hampered the fun factor. If only it could have been made just a tickle faster, as mentioned - that would have solved a lot of the issues 😇🕹️👌
I must be the only one to hate this game because of the slughish graphics
Took way too long to move around which made the game slow and boring
I lost interet after one play through
Tried it years later on emulator
Yep still hated it
Games with sluggish movement are pretty off-putting... which is a shame because I think the graphics are superb for an early title 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer yeah I remember buying it in Liverpools bits and bytes
Looked great
Got him loaded it on my amstrad (no I'm not a vampire)
My c64 was having problems and never really recovered afterwards
And those movements uurgh
