After the NES, my Mom had bought a 4-5 years old Commodore 64/128 from an ad in the papers at the time. With a box full of disks and booklets. She knew nothing of the treasure she had gotten us, she just knew I liked these things!
Dang, to me @TheIzzyNobreShow you're one of the OGs. Watched a healthy amount of your content, even bought the game you worked on way back when. 99 something, can't recall. Dude, I even occasionally watched your Portuguese stuff cause I love how the language sounds, just can't understand *beep* 🤣!
I strongly recommend the C64 game Law of the West. You play a sherrif in a wild west town and have to keep the peace. You can talk your way through most confrontations but can unholster and fire your gun however you see fit. It's a fun little sandbox of morals and wits. Easy to learn and very immersive.
@@ButtonsNSticks yes!! while I like what they've done here, what I'd like to see is Atari keys, not just the style but the actual symbols and layout. This so I can hook it up to an emulator/MiSTer and have keys match the original system, without having to remember/look up which modern key matches the Atari key I want to press. Oh and I guess redundancy wouldn't hurt: there's many Atari keyboards, maybe have all of the keys of each even if they are duplicates between models (ie: help/start/select/option in the 400/800/XE and F keys in the ST, they could use the same keycodes) I really want that strip of brushed metal keys in the 800 though, never saw anything like that ever again.
Great vid, man! I was also born in 82! The year of E.T. and Tron! Great year! I started out with the 2600, then NES, Gameboy, SNES, Gamegear and that was the end of my console days till I got a computer in 94, then installed my first 3d card, the CANADIAN Matrox Mystique 2mb in 96, never looked back. Except for a few years ago where Xbox One S had a sale and I just had to jump back in lol, for Forza 3 mainly lol. Was never interested in the Commodore 64 but I am now!
TechDweeb, you gotta play Jumpman. If you haven't. The nostalgia is big in this one. Love the channel.. I just forced my kids and their cousin to watch this video while I yelled out in nostalgia joy at some of these classics.
The physics of Stunt Car Racer on C64 is actually nuts. If you watch a video where it runs on the SuperCPU it becomes even more obvious how great it is. I think I read somewhere that it's a direct port port of the engine running in the Amiga version, which still sounds insane to me if it's true. Back then I turned a cracked joystick and a car dashboard style toy into a wheel controller of sort to b be usable with this game on the C64 :)
I still own my 64, also a 128. I have a few 5 1/4" drives and the illusive 3.5" drive as well...! Haven't dragged either of them out of the hall closet in a few years....that'll change today 😊 Thanks for the reminder, these were the best of their generation with their SID chips, 16 colors (!!), and it's compact nature---they blew it all away back in the day! I actually miss typing in some of my games (yes, you actually programmed, what a concept!!). Great video, I might nab that keyboard, I like the design. I retro play all of the great games that this platform gave us (Ultima FTW!!), and they are decently set up. Absolutely great video Mr. Dweeb, it's so awesome to remember where we came from ❤
Same here. I let go of my 128D years ago and regret it. However, my C64 is hooked up to a 1702 monitor w/drives. When I'm working during the day, I'll let Little Computer People run on it across the room. The little dude in the house still eats like a horse. It's something to think this little game inspired games like The Sims. Pick up the keyboard in this video. You'll be amazed at how authentic it feels to the original as the keys have those dips your fingers will sink into. I liked it so much, I use it as my daily driver. Cheers!
Thanks for this fun video! Btw, how's the joystick that comes with the keyboard? You probably already know about some of the amazing homebrew games that have come out for the C64 in the last few years, but just in case you don't, here are a few highlights: Sam's Journey (platformer), Steel Ranger (run 'n gun), Briley Witch Chronicles (RPG), Caren and the Tangled Tentacles (graphic adventure), Planet X2.1 (RTS!), Lady-Pac (arcade), Wormhole (platforming / run 'n gun). Cheers.
The C64 was an amazing cRPG system, and not only Ultima - Bard's Tale I-III (and an actual construction kit to make your own version!), Phantasie I-III, Legacy of the Ancients; early gems like Telengard or Temple of Apshai. Almost all of the 80s classics were ported to C64. But, best of all, were the SSI Gold Box games like Pools of Radiance. SSI was kinda like the Avalon Hill of computer games at the time, making bizarrely complicated games with these highly limited computers. I also remember games like Defender of the Crown, which blew me away with its graphics at the time. Seven Cities of Gold was a game I remember spending a lot of time in. The platformer of Conan was fun, if frustrating. There were weird simulation games like President Elect. The fact that folks are STILL making C64 games today is a testimonial to its widespread fanbase. Thanks for the nostalgia, TechDweeb! Edit: Reading other comments made me even more nostalgic for games I nearly forgotten from the whole Summer/Winter Games EA stuff to Usagi Yojimbo... I used to sail the high seas with me eyepatch back in the day, so I had a lot of games... a lot of long lost floppies... I used to run a BBS when I was 11-13ish.
I think my favorite C64 game is Sam's Journey. It's out for NES/Famicom as well Digital or Physical. I will be ordering Piopow for NES this month before it's to late and they are all gone from Limited Run.
Check out modern C64 games like Sam's Journey, A Pig Quest, Lester, Arcade Daze, Bad Moon Rising, Briley Witch Chronicles, Harharagon, Knight 'n' Grail, Muddy Racers, Organism, Polar Bear In Space, Robot Jet Action, Soulles, Wolfling... and more. You asked 😂
I remember a game named "beyond the ice palace" I also remember that it was to hard for my taste back then, but it looked and played great after it was loaded up from cassette tapes. Do you remember cassette tapes for the c64 that was even more archaic than floppys but it did work. Crazy to think that back in the day you waited for a game to be loaded from a cassette and nowadays some complain that it takes a few milliseconds longer to boot a game from the sd card in your steam deck compared to the ssd 😂
I'll try Beyond the Ice Palace, looks great! And good point about the things we complain about. My buddy has a real old DOS PC, and I was like "let's boot it up and check out some games!", and my main takeaway was "dang that's a lot of waiting" :P
Just got my 8bitdo keyboard today! Swapping switches for brown ones though. Badlands! Man I loved that game on the C64. In fact the C64 started it all for me, so much so it's the star of my sci-fi time travelling books!
Kaihl box whites are the ones I had on my keyboard for a longggg time before switching to pink linear switches. It's so fun to hear them click-clicking away. This was indeed such a cozy video. Thanks for sharing! Next up, ASMR TechDweeb doodling video. You said you'd do ANYTHING.
I remember having fun with _Fort Apocalypse_ back in the day. I haven't played it in decades, so I don't know how well it holds up now. It was also available on Atari Computer systems, but I played the C64 version.
I grew up with that thing. Wrote my first own program on it, in assembler, at the age of 10 or so. There are at least 100 more really great games for the C64.

My dad was a big computer geek/enthusiast. He had a Tandy 1000 but gave it to me after he got a Commodore 64. He got it mostly for being a family computer to do family things (banking, mail, etc.) but the Commodore 64 wasn't good for that. Well, he said that, I couldn't tell you. So the Tandy 1000 with its dual 5 1/2 floppies was my first PC. My dad got rid of the C64, never got back into PCs until much later when Pentium 4's and Windows XP were the thing.
usagi yojimbo, international karate +, microprose soccer, wizard of wor, boulder dash, myth, power drift, rick dangerous, friday the 13th, emilyn hughes soccer, giana sisters, terry's big adventure, barbarian.. so much great games.. great musics too..
I really, really like the C64's SID chip. Great music on that thing, all curated nicely in the High Voltage SID Collection. I particularly like songs by Goto80. About the keyboard though, the keycaps are available in several colors. They're called "AF SA" profile keycaps, and this particular brand is recognizable by the font and the way the period is misaligned on the "> ." key. They're a clone of the MG Monster / MG Ember premium sets, but IMO they're better than the original, while also being a fraction of the price.
I got given a Commodore 64 for helping some friends move house and although it wasn't working, I was able to get it fixed. No disk drive but it did come with the cassette player, a Quickshot joystick and some games on cassette. Uridium, Ye Ar Kung Fu, Impossible Mission, Paradroid and Suicide Express were on the cassettes. It stopped working again after about 6 months so when I took it back to get repaired, the techie was selling Amiga 500s so I traded it in for one and bought the OG Civilization and X-Com Enemy Unknown. Good times.
How could you do a C64 overview and not mention its crown gem, the Boulder Dash series? 😭 (Yes, I was there, chucking my joystick over the desk whenever the "squares" and "butterflies" exploded me. 😂🕹).
Legacy of the Ancients is one of my favorite RPG's on it that's a bit short and Beyond the Forbidden Forest was a good popular game. The computer Lab at my Elementary School had a 1 hour class every week where they crammed us into a room with around 30 computers ranging from Apples, Atari, Commodores, TRS-80 and a few CP/M and DOS computers and forced us to play video games.15 minutes to do what ever you wanted then having to put everything away and switch to a different computer.
My families favorite was called jumpman. Also to note it was the only video game my mom ever played. In fact it was the only game she ever played. She didn't play card or board games but to this day she raves about the amazing game jumpman from the comadore 64. If memory serves me correctly there was Ana amazing game called firestorm or fire... something... basically blew my little mind when I saw it, one of the first concepts of homing rockets where you controlled the rocket... honestly from memory that was better than playing the game itself. Either way I thank you for the retro dopamine you have provided me this day. 😅
Jumpman was a great game! I didn’t play that one specifically until a couple decades later on emulation but “Jumpman Jr “ was one of my favorites in my c64 library back in the 80s played it to death.
As a 56 year old I played the original C64. This brought back soo many happy memories. I definitely recommend playing Ghostbusters Batman Rainbow Island Keep up the good work ❤
I find that the C64 layout just doesn't translate well to modern layouts. Always feels so awkward when I try to emulate that I usually give up by the end of the day (no matter how much I'd love to play Mail Order Monsters or the Racing Destruction Set again...). edit: Aww. $160 CA. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my league. :(
Oh man I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justifying buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard…….
I had a C64! There was a fun 2d adventure puzzle game where you play an astronaut on a world full of aliens and their underground lair. I cant remember the name, tho. Anyone know that one?
My first computer and I have so many fond memories of playing games, even on my black & white portable tv. You mentioned some great ones and I used to also play a few sports games with my friends like Hyper Sports (which had great SID chariots of fire intro music), Summer Games II, Winter Games and Daley Thomson's Decathlon. I also had the joystick in the photo of the real c64 in your video. Can't remember what it was called but it was brilliant.
I have never STOPPED with the C64. If you've genuinely never played any - then I would recommend WIZBALL for it's uniqueness. If you want something confusingly impress there's a SuperMarioBros, and a MS Sonic port for it... but personally, the game I can't get enough of is Bruce Lee. Not it's most visually impressive, it;s just a really good game.
The keyboard is glorious! Sorry I can't buy it through your affiliate link (I am in Europe, and your link goes to the US store. That's too expensive with the shipping and import tax). As to the emulation, you could just use VICE standalone, it's become very user friendly by now. That would allow you to experience all other stuff with the C64, not just games, like Geos, BASIC programming, or various hardware expansions (almost all are emulated).
Ah jeez, I'm older than TechDweeb. 👴 C64 games, you say?! How about Space Taxi, G.I. Joe, Spy vs. Spy, Impossible Mission, Cave of the Word Wizard, Ghostbusters, Zulu, Caverns of Khafka, Alice in Wonderland, Zaxxon, B.C. Quest for Tires, Congo Bongo, Lazy Jones. That'll keep ya busy!
Me and my best friend wasted so many hours playing Raid Over Moscow. Little Computer People is really interesting. "Fun"... Maybe not, but interesting.
Like i month ago I completed Commando. I couldn't do it as a kid ;p Now I'm trying to complete Ghost n Goblins or / and Green Beret. I cheat a bit though ;) - i use save states in retro arch because some games are incredibly difficult :D ps. Mega-lo-mania from Commodore Amiga is still an amazing game in 2024 :) Trying to finish it too. I completed Pang - loved it as 10-11 year old me ;)
Man it's nice seeing the Commodore 64 get some love from emulation channels. I was born too late to get any childhood experience with it, but exploring the game library as an adult with TheC64 full-size and getting into amateur BASIC programming through that has always made me jealous of anyone who had access to a real one growing up.
If only the keyboard had the keycaps of the C64C, but still kept the same colors of the C64... the C64C had less sharp corners, which made typing much more comfortable.
If you want some INSANELY retro feeling switches for that board, that sound and feel amazing, grab some "gateron mini i" switches for it. They're tactile switches with a deeeeep thock and the way they did the tactile bump right at the top makes them feel crazy retro. I just made a keyboard for my friend and used them... now i need a set for myself.
So I've done a lot of troubleshooting and trial and error. I mapped my retropad binds to my Gamesir G8+ rather than having it default to it, cleared all hotkeys, and have come to the conclusion that no matter what, In Quick Menu - Controls - whatever "LEFT" is bound/assigned to whether it's Up or R1 or any button, it pauses the game. No matter what. So when you launch, say Turrican, it will pause as soon as you press left and the only button that will UnPause it, is FIRE. 1. Is this recreatable for anyone else? Surprisingly, ON PORT 2 CONTROLS in Quick Menu - Controls with Device Type left on RETRO PAD, I can assign the actual DPAD/HAT LEFT to R or anything else, and it allows me to play and left still works fine. But if the LEFT option on the list that pips up is assigned to ANYTHING, that button will pause the game. PORT 1 CONTROLS stay how they are. With D pad mapped as it should be and device type left as RETRO PAD. Confirmed now that changing to JOYSTICK changes nothing for either PORT 1 or 2 2. Does this track for anyone else? I can not figure out what this is. I think it's some kind of mix-up between Port 1 and Port 2 controls getting crossed, maybe? There's not much online besides a post about checking a log file bit I can't find Input = Pause to delete in the script lines. How can this be fixed?? From what I have gathered, there is some kind of correlation between PORT 1 & PORT 2 but the Controls for port 2 just need to be changed from DPAD LEFT (and sometimes DOWN on some games like UFO) to any other binding, and that in turn makes the binds in PORT 1 work as they should.
(Deep Breath) Accolade's Comics, Airborne Ranger, Aliens, Bop'n Rumble, Bruce Lee, Crossroads 1 and 2, Dan Dare, Dark Castle, Druid, Goonies, Gunship, Hacker 1 and 2, International Karate Plus, Impossible Mission 1 and 2, Killed Until Dead, Legend of Blacksilver, Lemans, Lightforce, Mainframe, M.U.L.E., Paradroid, Pirates, Raid over Moscow, Saboteur, Snookie, Space Station Oblivion (AKA Driller), Last Ninja 1, 2, and 3, and Zorro. I might have left out ten or twenty games.
The C64 was my third computer, eventually to only be surpassed by the amazing Amiga 1000. My mother gave it away and I still have trauma! Some great games, Impossible Mission, Wasteland (precursor of Fallout), Elite, Defender of the Crown, Gunship, Traveler, Supremacy, Silent Service, Autoduel, Uridum... ...just too, too many!
Very interesting... while I'm mildly disappointed that the Keyboard and Joystick can't be used simultaneously, it does potentially allow for simulation games like Microprose's 'Project: Stealth Fighter' and 'Gunship' (which have combined Joystick/Keyboard controls) to be fully playable via emulation...may have to investigate this further. Very helpful vid, BTW; not bad for a randomly recommended by YT vid 👍
A few C64 games that I think you should try: Battletech - A Crescent Hawk's Inception BC II - Grog's Revenge Demon Stalkers - The Raid on Doomfane Druid Elite Hard Hat Mack One Man and His Droid Samurai Warrior - The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo Shogun
StuntCar Racer was genuinely ahead of it's time. Someone recently created a SuperCPU version of it that upped the framerate to make it even more enjoyable!
After the NES, my Mom had bought a 4-5 years old Commodore 64/128 from an ad in the papers at the time. With a box full of disks and booklets. She knew nothing of the treasure she had gotten us, she just knew I liked these things!

Bubble bobble crew where you at?
I grew up on the C64. CJ Elephant Antics, absolutely amazing.
Just remembered one of my gaming WOW moments was on Creatures. You could hear the waterfall before it was on the screen, next gen stuff!
Impossible Mission!

Good times.
Realm of Impossibility
Montezuma's Revenge
Heck yeah!!
my favorite. pitfall on the 2600 was my first game ever
the last V8 and THe Dungeons and Dragons games are the best, I played htem when they came out adn I miss them.
Recommendation: "Galencia" is a relatively new (2017) aftermarket game that plays superb and looks impressive. Be sure to check it out on the C64! :)
How could you do a C64 overview and not mention its crown gem, the Boulder Dash series? 😭 (Yes, I was there, chucking my joystick over the desk whenever the "squares" and "butterflies" exploded me. 😂🕹).
Uridium... Bought a C64 mini just to play that one again. Great shooter.
Try "Impossible Mission", arguably the best game ever made for the C64. Still holds up well, even today.
Gateway To Apshai, Wizball, Forbidden Forest, Raid Over Moscow and Archon are some of my recommendations.
I have an aunt like that! Literally the only game she every played on my cousin's Nintendo was Burger Time, and she played it ALL THE TIME!
Jumpman and Jumpman Junior are the two best games on any 8-bit machine ever made
@@TechDweebXCOM 2 is the only game I play on my Xbox
Jumpman was awesome.
@techdweeb, Challenge: install an n100 board into the 8-bitdo c64 keyboard and use it as your main PC for a week.
As a 56 year old I played the original C64.
This brought back soo many happy memories.
I definitely recommend playing
Ghostbusters
Batman
Rainbow Island
Keep up the good work ❤
River raid also a good one!
I don't see a commodore key button 👀, yes i had a c64 such memories.
you old man. wait i was born in 72 😢
75 😢😢😢
Did you see Star wars in the cinema as a kid?
@@McRcFly yes i did my my dad took me biggest cinema in london to see it and got a x wing and luke the next day in Hamleys
@@themadmoderator8465 awesome.
I was born the year it came out.
I hope you still have the x-wing and Luke.
@@McRcFly Once in the cinema and once at the drive in. Probably why I still have a soft spot for Starwars, even after it has been disneyfied
Ok, so tech dweeb is a time traveler that definitely didn't sleep with his friends mother 😉 . Makes more sense, obviously Pockets is from the future .
Your mom is going to kick you out soon if you keep this up!!!! COMMODORE 64 LOL you must be older than 34 to want to play this thing so much!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justifying buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard. I can’t justify buying this keyboard…….
You're not fooling anyone
I want the 8 bit do NES keyboard. They're awesome looking
I don't have any sentimental attachment to the C64 but I want that keyboard.
I have the Famicom version.
I like the clickiness and the color scheme.
I have no nostalgia for the C64 but I love the new keyboard. I'm looking forward to their version of the Model M, as well.
I picked up on the "Retro game cor...ner" reference. ;)
I thought you were something like 30 years old
The keyboard is glorious!
"Anything you ask...anything." bwhahaha
If there was a Rock n Roll Hall of fame for Computer/Console music the Commodore64 would definitely be in there 🤘🏼
Fist 2 is magical, also Zak Mckracken and the alien mindbenders.
Damn. I just bought a keyboard a week ago. 100% would have gotten this one instead. This would be great for the mister.
checkout "Rockstar Ate My Hamster", "Midnight Resistance", "Turbo Esprit", "Thanatos", the Dizzy games, "the LA adventure" and "Detective"
A great game that you can play on C64 (but is not actually from that time) is You Have to Win the Game
Ah jeez, I'm older than TechDweeb. 👴
C64 games, you say?!
I had a zx spectrum. I played skool dayz my dad played fruit machine.
Anything 😈.
I loved my C64! Great memories
wires are a must for gamming, wireless has lag, do not emulate in lcds.
Born in 1982 and 40 huh?
Me too, Pal... Me too...
A pile of xbox are much easier to sleep on
Me and my best friend wasted so many hours playing Raid Over Moscow.
Little Computer People is really interesting. "Fun"... Maybe not, but interesting.
Don't forget SAM which was probably the very first software only voice synthesizer on the C64.
Cool!
Like i month ago I completed Commando. I couldn't do it as a kid ;p
Now I'm trying to complete Ghost n Goblins or / and Green Beret.
I cheat a bit though ;) - i use save states in retro arch because some games are incredibly difficult :D
ps. Mega-lo-mania from Commodore Amiga is still an amazing game in 2024 :) Trying to finish it too. I completed Pang - loved it as 10-11 year old me ;)
@1:12 Nice Austin Powers reference!
A classic!
@@TechDweeb Yeah baby!
I wonder if there's enough space to get a raspy zero in there...
I like the way ya think!
boulder dash and impossible mission.😊
Confirmed now that changing to JOYSTICK changes nothing for either PORT 1 or 2
(Deep Breath)
Accolade's Comics, Airborne Ranger, Aliens, Bop'n Rumble, Bruce Lee, Crossroads 1 and 2, Dan Dare, Dark Castle, Druid, Goonies, Gunship, Hacker 1 and 2, International Karate Plus, Impossible Mission 1 and 2, Killed Until Dead, Legend of Blacksilver, Lemans, Lightforce, Mainframe, M.U.L.E., Paradroid, Pirates, Raid over Moscow, Saboteur, Snookie, Space Station Oblivion (AKA Driller), Last Ninja 1, 2, and 3, and Zorro.
I might have left out ten or twenty games.
Used to love the C64, a friend had one, and I had the ZX spectrum so we would play different games at each others houses.
LOAD"*",8,1 - Impossible Mission - Little Computer People - Gunship - Mail Order Monsters... nolstagia overload... I may need to lay down for a few.
A few C64 games that I think you should try:
Battletech - A Crescent Hawk's Inception
BC II - Grog's Revenge
Demon Stalkers - The Raid on Doomfane
Druid
Elite
Hard Hat Mack
One Man and His Droid
Samurai Warrior - The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo
Shogun
StuntCar Racer was genuinely ahead of it's time. Someone recently created a SuperCPU version of it that upped the framerate to make it even more enjoyable!
Most modern games are worth taking a look at.
I wonder how awesome it would looks like on a CRT monitor.
I just bought a Commodore 1702 monitor! It's in shipping now! Vid coming soon!
wonderful video!
