I think that Richard Gere is not the best actor on this planet, but still he is a quite good one. American Gigolo is definitley his best role. So cool almost 40 years ago. 1980. Amazing.
I agree with you. Hes not the best but he gives a nuanced performance as is within his means. He never surpassed this role. The best neo noir melodrama I've seen ever.
Gere got this movie because John Travolta, after three days of filming, walked off the set, saying, "I can't do this." One problem was that Giorgio Armani had made an entire wardrobe for JT, who stood 6'; when the producers called RG and said. "JT split; you want the part?" RG stood 5'8 and Armani had to make up and entirely new wardrobe. JT reportedly walked off because AG demanded full-frontal nudity in one scene and JT decided he was totally unwilling to do that. So Armani and his crew had to fly back to LA and cut a new wardrobe for RG because of the height difference. RG was like, "Full nudity? Yeah, sure, no problem. If the world wants to see my junk, well, here it is." The rest is history. Also, both men have had their career crises. JT got Pulp Fiction just when he really, really needed work; Quentin Tarantino said. "If I can't cast Travolta. I just won't do the picture." RG got Pretty Woman when he desperately needed work.

That’s not an accurate drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, even in 1980. One does not need to drive through orange groves and most people would not drive with the top down on I-10 as they get close to the desert.
@Lone Wolf It only takes a few minutes to get from Malibu to Beverly Hills, right? 😉 Just last week it took over 30 minutes to get from Beverly Hills to Culver City and it was about 6 miles. 🤪
