    I find the way colours work in the celtic languages really interesting.
    Glas in Irish usually means green
    Glas in Scots Gaelic usually means grey (grey is a shade of green)
    Then Glas in Welsh usually means Blue. They can be used as the other colours sometimes aswell which is cool.
    This isn't the only Colour that this happens too either.
    Glas also is the colour if water in Irish

      In past times coch meant brown, but now means red. Glas was green, but is now blue. Greenfield in Flintshire has the Welsh name Maes Glas, which makes no sense now, but did in the past.

    Very similar to Irish.
    Table is "bord"
    But on the table is "Ar an mbord"
    And the b becomes silent :)

    Super informative and I appreciate that you are using clear terms for what is happening, it's much better and easier to understand than lessons which try to avoid using linguistic terminology.

    Shwmae! I'm originally from Rhyl North Wales, lived there for my first 8 years and have been in Germany and a load of other places since. I'm back into learning Welsh and I can only really find South Welsh teachings. I saw in a previous video that in North Wales you pronouce the U differnetly in certain words and can make it from a uuun sound to a eeeen sound? Can you recommend any learning sources (so far I'm using duolingo, open university sources and this audible book) your videos have helped a lot. I'm currently in NZ so books are a bit harder to come by.

    Nice explanation for when the mutations occur. It's not so much how they sound though; it's just easier to articulate if you use them. As a Welsh speaker you might want to try spending a day without mutating, for an experiment and see how this affects the way you speak.

    Lenition could be a better word than 'mutation'. Your link to the LearningObservatory table is no longer there. Is it moved?

    What makes a welsh word femine and what makes it masculine?

    • @mew11two
      @mew11two 5 років тому

      Some of them are obvious from the meaning (like a man is obviously going to be masculine and a woman feminine) but most you'll just have to learn which is which when you learn the words.
