Thank you so much for making this video. Im grafting a '72 twinstar kick shaft into a '86 rebel motor (for a '94 nighthawk frame. Gotta love the universalism of Honda) and never considered checking for the gear to spin freely. Turns out the O-ring I had on there wasn't allowing the gear to retract completely! But it was checked now, before being put on the bike. Simple enough fix now, but would've been a huge pain later on if I hadn't seen this video.

The part that has the notch on it what is the name for that? I have a 1984 Honda 200x that I have to kick a million times for it to start and my buddy told me that the “dog” needs to be replace. However the only dog I can find for sale is a hound. Can you help me?

This is useful. I have a 1983 yamaha RS 125 DX. The kick start turns the engine over but won't return. I'm thinking the cogs and shaft are not correctly aligned.
Had a kick starter gear engage on rough landings and sounded like a bearing being spun by an air compressor.. thought i had a total bottom end rebuild coming up

I have a trx 250,I ordered a used kick start cause mine is mostly ratchet affect..but when it miss fires when it does kick in some thing inside the engine sounds as if being slung threw the engine and hits hard on inner left crank case like a rod has already broke loose......when it fires up it's smooth no knocking valves tick some..but not on the bottom end whats coming out of it...I was figuring it be the piston arm hitting what is it

I’m rebuilding a Cr 80, I done all the exact same steps as you guys have done, and although my spring looks okay, as soon as I wind it round into its slot, the spring is trying to pull itself out of place (the hook won’t stay in the hole) and off the end of the mechanism, and also pulling the shaft out of its place.. any ideas as it’s driving me nuts.

I have an ‘85 cr80 and I was replacing my clutch and the kickstart assembly flew out as I assembled it. Not once but twice I had to take it apart to see what was wrong and I still have no idea. Not sure if your year if cr80 is as much of a pain in the ass to take apart as mine because the brake pedal, that little spring attached to it, and all the radiator hoses are in the way. Believe me when I say it’s almost not even worth doing it myself lmao.

what would cause the kick drive gear and washer to seize onto the kick start shaft? was riding along and it all locked up on me, push down on the kick starter it will turn over, however on the return stroke it would turn the motor back.. stripped it to find a seized kick drive gear on the kick starter shaft. what has caused this to happen? just did an oil change with correct trans oil to the correct level too. now the shaft, gear and washer are junk. I made a track fix by removing the kick start assembly, and only reinstalling the shaft with the seized gear and washers, carried on riding for a bit of fun..

my guess is that the spring has popped out of the housing, and allowed the kick lever to droop down while running, this has probably loaded up the engagement assembly heating the kick drive gear and locking it up on the shaft.. other than that im a bit stumped, as its all in the correct order etc.

Like u say if it doesnt spin freely it rattles is that whats happening to my bike?ill go threw gears and something will rattle as i give it more gas. But it has plenty of power and shifts smoothly
Just got a project 2001 rm125 kick start is doing that "ticking" you were talking about when the gear doesnt free spin i disassembled the kick shaft and noticed there was no washer between the case and spring would this cause the gear to not disengage enough to free spin?
Just for clarity, first check the parts fiche for your year, make, and model of vehicle. Never assume the video is the same as yours. After that, always fix what's missing and then if then re-test. Hey i know this is an old video but maybe you can help me out? I have a Honda xl185 and the kickstart wont kick the motor over. The gear itself looks fine from what i can see. I took the side cover off but didnt learn much. Oil was clean of shavings or brass. Something is locking it up, could it be the kickstart gear or should i look elsewhere? I was hoping for a simple fix!
@@raccoontower8569 something is definatley blocking it. Its my roomates bike. It almost seems like a cam timing issue, i can rotate the motor almost 360 degrees but it will not turn all the way over even with the spark plug out. The internals all look shiny and new still though.Couldn't see anything stuck in the gears and the oil and filter were clean as normal so hard to imagine a chunk of metal in the gears. Im wondering if its either the kickstart gear itself (she said the kickstart was having trouble recoiling back to the top before it locked up completley) or maybe a valve issue? Looks like ill have to dig more into it, but thanks for the input! ill keep an eye out.

I’m guessing don’t know for sure, but your kickstarter spring is not fully winded so it doesn’t have enough tension to push back the Kickstarter all the way back up

Think I may have a kick start prob on my Xr650r. Sometimes seems to slip other times locks up on starting stroke of kick start. Maybe the slip is throwing out my kick start timing . Thanks for this vid
@@dougrobertson2470 I stripped mine down but could not see anything wrong but my kick shaft did seem to go in further on reassemble . No problem since so it’s fixed but not sure how I did it . Check out my vid it may help.
Hi, I have a Suzuki Rm 125 from 2000. If its running I’m having that ratching effect and the Kickstarter doesn’t stay in place and when i turn it off it bounces back against my exhaust. Do you think it’s the same situation you explaint with the Kickstarter sprocket not being able to move freely while its running? Kind regards.

Working on a yz250 and the torsion spring keeps coming out of its hole in the case I bought a new spring and I’ve tried using the kick starter without the case being put together and the spring is still coming out the hole I’m not sure if it’s bc the case isn’t on or not but it did the same thing before I replaced it and the case was on

My pw80 kick start doesn't work. I bought it from a friend and he said that he has never seen the bike start with the kick starter in the two years that he owned the bike, he always only push started the bike. I've been trying to start the bike with the kick starter for a while now. The bike really wants to start but it just won't start with the kick start. I can push start the bike, the bike does work but there's something wrong with the kick starter. Does anybody know what I should do?

Im grafting a '72 twinstar kick shaft into a '86 rebel motor (for a '94 nighthawk frame. Gotta love the universalism of Honda) and never considered checking for the gear to spin freely.
Turns out the O-ring I had on there wasn't allowing the gear to retract completely!
But it was checked now, before being put on the bike.
Simple enough fix now, but would've been a huge pain later on if I hadn't seen this video.

The part that has the notch on it what is the name for that? I have a 1984 Honda 200x that I have to kick a million times for it to start and my buddy told me that the “dog” needs to be replace. However the only dog I can find for sale is a hound. Can you help me?

This is useful. I have a 1983 yamaha RS 125 DX.
The kick start turns the engine over but won't return. I'm thinking the cogs and shaft are not correctly aligned.

Had a kick starter gear engage on rough landings and sounded like a bearing being spun by an air compressor.. thought i had a total bottom end rebuild coming up

I have a trx 250,I ordered a used kick start cause mine is mostly ratchet affect..but when it miss fires when it does kick in some thing inside the engine sounds as if being slung threw the engine and hits hard on inner left crank case like a rod has already broke loose......when it fires up it's smooth no knocking valves tick some..but not on the bottom end whats coming out of it...I was figuring it be the piston arm hitting what is it

I’m rebuilding a Cr 80, I done all the exact same steps as you guys have done, and although my spring looks okay, as soon as I wind it round into its slot, the spring is trying to pull itself out of place (the hook won’t stay in the hole) and off the end of the mechanism, and also pulling the shaft out of its place.. any ideas as it’s driving me nuts.

I have an ‘85 cr80 and I was replacing my clutch and the kickstart assembly flew out as I assembled it. Not once but twice I had to take it apart to see what was wrong and I still have no idea. Not sure if your year if cr80 is as much of a pain in the ass to take apart as mine because the brake pedal, that little spring attached to it, and all the radiator hoses are in the way. Believe me when I say it’s almost not even worth doing it myself lmao.

what would cause the kick drive gear and washer to seize onto the kick start shaft?
was riding along and it all locked up on me, push down on the kick starter it will turn over, however on the return stroke it would turn the motor back.. stripped it to find a seized kick drive gear on the kick starter shaft.
what has caused this to happen? just did an oil change with correct trans oil to the correct level too.
now the shaft, gear and washer are junk.
I made a track fix by removing the kick start assembly, and only reinstalling the shaft with the seized gear and washers, carried on riding for a bit of fun..

my guess is that the spring has popped out of the housing, and allowed the kick lever to droop down while running, this has probably loaded up the engagement assembly heating the kick drive gear and locking it up on the shaft.. other than that im a bit stumped, as its all in the correct order etc.
sure have.. I do pretty much all the same things you show in the videos.. plus some extra non "factory tricks"

Like u say if it doesnt spin freely it rattles is that whats happening to my bike?ill go threw gears and something will rattle as i give it more gas. But it has plenty of power and shifts smoothly

Hi Shane, I have a '85 ATC 200x how much of the engine do I need to dissemble to get to the kick starter shaft?
you have to split the whole case
Just got a project 2001 rm125 kick start is doing that "ticking" you were talking about when the gear doesnt free spin i disassembled the kick shaft and noticed there was no washer between the case and spring would this cause the gear to not disengage enough to free spin?
Just for clarity, first check the parts fiche for your year, make, and model of vehicle. Never assume the video is the same as yours. After that, always fix what's missing and then if then re-test.

Is that a transmission case for a 2005 yz250f or a different model? I am working with the same kickstart and I'm trying to match the transmission case to get an idea of the what the seating for the the kickstarter looks like

Hey i know this is an old video but maybe you can help me out? I have a Honda xl185 and the kickstart wont kick the motor over. The gear itself looks fine from what i can see. I took the side cover off but didnt learn much. Oil was clean of shavings or brass. Something is locking it up, could it be the kickstart gear or should i look elsewhere? I was hoping for a simple fix!

@@raccoontower8569 something is definatley blocking it. Its my roomates bike. It almost seems like a cam timing issue, i can rotate the motor almost 360 degrees but it will not turn all the way over even with the spark plug out. The internals all look shiny and new still though.Couldn't see anything stuck in the gears and the oil and filter were clean as normal so hard to imagine a chunk of metal in the gears. Im wondering if its either the kickstart gear itself (she said the kickstart was having trouble recoiling back to the top before it locked up completley) or maybe a valve issue? Looks like ill have to dig more into it, but thanks for the input! ill keep an eye out.

I’m guessing don’t know for sure, but your kickstarter spring is not fully winded so it doesn’t have enough tension to push back the Kickstarter all the way back up
Or maybe your whole kick starter spring is loose

Think I may have a kick start prob on my Xr650r. Sometimes seems to slip other times locks up on starting stroke of kick start. Maybe the slip is throwing out my kick start timing . Thanks for this vid
I'm having same problem. No slip just froze or stuck. Did you figure yours out?
@@dougrobertson2470 I stripped mine down but could not see anything wrong but my kick shaft did seem to go in further on reassemble . No problem since so it’s fixed but not sure how I did it . Check out my vid it may help.
Hi, I have a Suzuki Rm 125 from 2000. If its running I’m having that ratching effect and the Kickstarter doesn’t stay in place and when i turn it off it bounces back against my exhaust. Do you think it’s the same situation you explaint with the Kickstarter sprocket not being able to move freely while its running? Kind regards.

My kick start shaft wobbles and doesn’t stay seated fully. Which causes it to grind against the inside of the side case. Need some help

Working on a yz250 and the torsion spring keeps coming out of its hole in the case I bought a new spring and I’ve tried using the kick starter without the case being put together and the spring is still coming out the hole I’m not sure if it’s bc the case isn’t on or not but it did the same thing before I replaced it and the case was on

What would cause a kick starter to get stuck in the third rotation?

My pw80 kick start doesn't work. I bought it from a friend and he said that he has never seen the bike start with the kick starter in the two years that he owned the bike, he always only push started the bike. I've been trying to start the bike with the kick starter for a while now. The bike really wants to start but it just won't start with the kick start. I can push start the bike, the bike does work but there's something wrong with the kick starter. Does anybody know what I should do?

Assambled my engine,kicked it over a dozen times, then it the kickstart got stuck, never knew kickstarts had timing marks, will be checking that
Doubt it's a seized engine, how's it supposed to seize if it never even started
