Great video once again. One of the interesting things about this last 4 years facing Ruben's Sporting was that even though they always played in a 343/3421, they never played the same way 2 years in a row. He kept trying to find ways to reinvent the system. In the past, they would sit back a lot more, then they played with a false 9 a lot of games two seasons ago. Finally they bought Gyokeres and became even more direct and explosive, without losing the flair that Pote and Trincão bring to the game. In the middle, they have had different duos, and the profiles slightly changed throughout the seasons (palhinha -> ugarte -> huljmand. João Mário -> Matheus Nunes -> Morita/Bragança). So even though he seems to be very strict about his (theoritical) setup, he seems capable to find ways to adjust the dynamics to the players at his disposal. As a side note, he brought Sporting back to the top, so, in a way, he will find a similar situation (to be clear, I'm definitely not comparing coaching a big team in Portugal to coaching a big team in England, I'm just saying...).

Appreciate the work done here lots... however we have seen with the Man Utd that learning new systems takes a bit of time and INEOS already stated that they will be getting managers in the same mold or who subscribe to the same game model. Changing what we have to suit Amorim's supposed favorite 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 mid-season wouldn't make sense. The scenario I see is what has happened at Liverpool Arne Slot came in kept the major facets of Klopp's latest game model and reduced the speed of play, that way allowing a smooth transition and avoiding chaos. Most people speak of Amorim as tactically flexible and then head straight to explaining only the 3 at the back formation which I see as narrow-minded. I read that last season he did play 4 at the back and they went unbeaten for half of the season + Man Utd has always played with explosive wingers and not wing backs.(something people seem to have forgotten coz Ruben is the new toy). Can we please see some more analyses of how he can use the players we have at Man Utd in a 4 at the back formation becoz the Jan window wont see us dashing for new players. Key things I believe he has been briefed on is team and individual consistency, team work and cohesion for 90mins, cohesive pressing and scoring goals.

Great video, I think Amorim seems like a step in the right direction but will need replacing within 3/4 years... which isn't great. I would be interested in whether Zirkzee could fit as one of those inside forwards. I think we'll go and take back Alvaro Fernandez ASAP and Garnacho can pivot into an impact sub for the time being. I imagine our striking options will be Hojlund, Rashford as an emergency option, and it could accelerate Chido Obi-Martin's progress in the squad.
Chido is a good option for this system. Zirksee could be one of the inside forwards yes, but would need to work harder off the ball to create passing options to receive.
Really good analysis, thanks. Thiugh one thing - I'm pretty sure rest defense refers to how the team set up in possession to nullify the risk of counter attacks, not how they set up out of possession.
Hi all! I get the questions around my use of “rest defending,” so I wanted to share my take on it. For me, “rest defending” reflects a team’s choice to sit deeper with a clear purpose: conserving energy while staying compact and organized. Instead of pressing high and chasing the ball, the team holds a disciplined shape, ready to absorb pressure and launch forward when the chance comes. It’s about controlled defense rather than passive play-an approach that balances solid structure with energy conservation. Thanks for the feedback, and always open to the conversation!

Amazing analysis, you are one of the standout analysts . What amazed me is why didn't united go for de zerbi last summer? And the one they interviewed was tuchel and he is known for his 5 at the back formation and now Amorim who uses 5 at the back does this indicate this kind of style play is their long term plan ?
@@PythagorasinBoots we do not have a long term plan just attacking football amorim is on a 2 and half year contract meaning it will end around after the world cup and nagelsmann will be available
Yes he could but would mean the other flank needs more of a two way winger who can cut inside as well as go round the outside. Diallo potentially and Garnacho could compete out there.
Great video. Will be facisnating how our current wingers are utilized in this system. I think I'm more skeptical than you re: Garnacho. Oddly Antony might be best suited for wingback? But between Rashford, Garnacho, Antony, Amad curious who he'll favor.
I think Eriksen could do some good work at wing-back. He puts in great crosses and is willing to track back, and Amorim doesn't seem to care if his wing-backs are easy to beat 1v1 off the dribble
United currently lacks the squad to support this demanding system, so their struggles likely won’t end soon. Even when players suited to this style eventually arrive, Amorim will already be under intense pressure, much like Ten Hag.INEOS missed an opportunity to save funds by not replacing Ten Hag in the summer. This system demands hard work, which many United players lack. If Amorim wants to succeed, he may need to move on from players like Bruno and Rashford soon. I don’t have high hopes; we’ve been in this situation so many times before. Constant rebuilding every few years isn’t feasible, especially now. A long-term approach is essential.
Hey man love your analysis, do you speed up your voice at all or is that you're mic? Just sounds like you speed up sometimes, especially in transitions
Really good analysis. The only thing I disagree with is Garnacho at the wide left. For me Garnacho should only be used there if we're behind and he comes off the bench to bring more attacking options in the game. But I think the standard should be a proper left wing back like Grimaldo, Davies, Dimarco, Theo or even Ait nouri.
If the 3421 doesn't work i can see how adapt his system because he is still quite young as a manager. If he sticks with it, i can see development from academy players like shea lacey to play in one of the 10 slots and kone as a 6 in the system
@@PythagorasinBoots What are your thoughts on converting Antony to a LWB? or does Amorim's system mainly play with inverted wingers rather than traditional ones?
I think de ligt will absolutely be used in the centre of the back 3, he was a beast for juve at that position and his ball playing ability is good enough for amorim i think.
Clear things when you see sporting Lisbon under amorim 1. On the ball: short passing, movement, rotation, sometimes play direct to target man 2. Off the ball: press as unit, high intensity, many sprint short run to closing down opponent Do you think player like rashford or Bruno suit to amorim style when they have the ball?? I don't think so, both rashford and Bruno like to play direct, they don't really good player in pocket or small space Eriksen, Casemiro, maguire, Lindelof Will struggle when the team have no ball because they need to sprint alot, closing down opponent fast. My point is actually Ten hag style (when he was in Ajax) arent much different with amorim. The problem some of these senior player don't accept or dont want to play that kind of football. Amorim is very good coach and very promising but if you task him to turn those senior player into that fit to his style i think that impossible and suicide mission. Amorim better has play with INEOS to get rid if those player and bring new player in summer
@PythagorasinBoots i think INEOS should given him full support especially if he want to sell some senior player who don't for to his style. Thats something Ten hag didnt have and Ten hag was force to compromise his tactic, he ending up stuck between his origin tactic and his compromise tactic
With Amorim coming in, it now makes sense to buy Victor Osimhen. No shade to Rasmus, who I know is capable of 25+ EPL goals. If the system depends on elite CFs, then let's have two of them. Besides Osimhen's heading is world class.
This system seems like its meant to use the box midfield for a Klopp-esque heavy metal style quick vertical buildup style rather than a horizontal tiki taka style. And as a Man Utd fan I've always held immense respect for Klopp's football right from his Dortmund days so this is a welcome change imo. LvG and EtH were too ingrained in the other school of thought, this guy's style looks fun for both the players and the fans. I think more than everything else the lack of sheer fun the players get from playing EtH's system was the biggest reason they never bought into it 100%.
Even Klopp needed players like Fabinho and Thiago, to give the side pausa and his team were more possession competent than people give them credit for. For me I’d like to see Amorim show more restraint in this regard
Informative video as always. I can't help but notice that De Ligt isn't included in your video... Is it an oversight or intentional for him not to be part of the Backline? He's arguably been our best CB this season.
Not an oversight, think I mentioned him as an option for the wider CB role. He could play instead of Maz in the RCB role or any of the back 3 roles in theory if in form.
As a Porto fan i can tell you now, Amorim is the right guy to take United foward, United needed that big personality, that Arteta, Klopp, Pep type project manager that can elevate the club again.
Ten Hag spanked Amorim's team in UCL by the way. And his Ajax team was much better than Amorim's Sporting. There can be no project manager because united sack their managers midway through a project
@@samshyam5347 that was over 3 years ago, not relevant at all, Ten Hag flopped in the Premier, his problems were never in the cups, it was always in the league, consistency. United has a new board now, very different, they gave Ten Hag every chance even after he had 600M quid and 18 miserable months, plus the portuguese league translates a lot better to the Premier than the dutch.
1) can casemero plays as cb especially that amorim loves when building up to have 1 cb moves into middle while using gk as 3rd cb ? 2) Does De ligt fit to this system ? 3) should we move upon Garnacho in the long term in this system?
If it's all about sericing the striker, but we have Garnacho, Rashford, I'm concerned. Basically writing off Zirkzee and Casemiro sucks too. Amorim would have to get creative with the players he has available to him. Surprised you expect Mazraoui to start over De Ligt, I would have expected 3 centerbacks with de ligt in the middle
Rashford - Hojlund/Zirkzee - Bruno is not as good as Bruno - Hojlund/Zirkzee - Antony frontline. The latter 3 forward line will work much harder and create more chances. Antony might be making his second comeback.
Do you Antony could do one of the wingback roles? Hes very onefooted but I feel like he would fit either side as hes a hard worker. Needs to be a lot less selfish but I think he can do it.
What about Luke Shawif he comes back ? Would he be a wing-back hugging the touchline, or maybe a rotation option for Martinez ? I wonder also what will become of De Ligt, he seems pretty ill-fitted for that system...
Would you have let Ruud been the caretaker manager for the rest of the season and have INEOS take more time to find a suitable replacement for ETG? I think that for the amount of change Amorim will require for his system to thrive, I’m concerned that if he isn’t a long term solution, you’ll have a bigger squad issue in the next 2-3 years where it’s a mix of this current team and Amorim’s vision. Unless you believe that Amorim can take United to Top 4 by this season, I’d rather let the long term rebuild begin and see which players need to move on.
Disagree with Rashford. I think playing in the two 10’s requires him to cover smaller distances OOP and in-possession, he will be closer to goal. I think Amorim brings out the best in Rashford. He won’t bench him
Then you haven’t watched Sporting closely. Their inside forwards are extremely hard working off the ball, they also have to track back to form box midfield in 541 as well as participate in the build up play.
@@AdiNikiVem the angle for rashford is too narrow to be truly effective. Maybe he can have a run at the number 9 position his runs off defenders are underrated
Hi. I have to disagree with you in a few things. I bet Amorim will use Bruno as the same as Pedro Gonçalves. Also on his first Portuguese title the striker was not the top scorer, it was the attacking midfielder ( Pedro Gonçalves). But good analysis 👍🏼
@PythagorasinBoots you did say that Brunol will struggle. I believe he will struggle if he starts having fits. Also you said that the tactic rolls to the striker. That happens since they had Gyokeres. First 2 seasons not really like that as Paulinho was more of a team player than a fixed striker and even last year when Paulinho and Gyokeres played together, Paulinho was moved to the side

Sped it up for this video
Really good analysis. The only thing I disagree with is Garnacho at the wide left. For me Garnacho should only be used there if we're behind and he comes off the bench to bring more attacking options in the game. But I think the standard should be a proper left wing back like Grimaldo, Davies, Dimarco, Theo or even Ait nouri.
If the 3421 doesn't work i can see how adapt his system because he is still quite young as a manager. If he sticks with it, i can see development from academy players like shea lacey to play in one of the 10 slots and kone as a 6 in the system
This might be the coach to make mount thrive at united, if he stays fit. He suits that "workaholic" kind of inside players based on this analysis.
Amazing video! Who would you rather have as manger or what mold of manger would be your preference?
I think you forgot about Mason Mount. He played inside forward on the right at Chelsea and he's very tidy on the ball, if he can stay fit.
He would be a great option if he can stay fit and play like in his prime
@@PythagorasinBoots What are your thoughts on converting Antony to a LWB? or does Amorim's system mainly play with inverted wingers rather than traditional ones?
I think de ligt will absolutely be used in the centre of the back 3, he was a beast for juve at that position and his ball playing ability is good enough for amorim i think.
Great video as always but do you think Garnacho has a future in that inside role maybe replacing Bruno in 2 years time if properly developed?
Clear things when you see sporting Lisbon under amorim
1. On the ball: short passing, movement, rotation, sometimes play direct to target man
2. Off the ball: press as unit, high intensity, many sprint short run to closing down opponent
Do you think player like rashford or Bruno suit to amorim style when they have the ball?? I don't think so, both rashford and Bruno like to play direct, they don't really good player in pocket or small space
Eriksen, Casemiro, maguire, Lindelof Will struggle when the team have no ball because they need to sprint alot, closing down opponent fast.
Totally agree that it is a very demanding play style. Question is does he have more balls and specific structure than ETH
@@PythagorasinBoots I see De Ligt in the middle, with Yoro or Mazraoui on the right. And Martinez on the left.
Thoughts of Antony as a RWB, can cut inside and also can help out in defence
Don't think Mazraoui works at RCB needs to be someone who consistently dominates 1v1 duels. Also Mount and Bruno on the 10s could work well
As a Porto fan i can tell you now, Amorim is the right guy to take United foward, United needed that big personality, that Arteta, Klopp, Pep type project manager that can elevate the club again.
No deep thoughts
Maaaan, I was jamming to the intro music, forgetting that I'm here for the video 😂😂😂
Great analysis. Would you say his style is more like Klopp's?
No, he has his own unique brand to be honest. More like a Giasperini id say
Mazroui played pretty good as a CAM for the first half the other day
Don’t see him as a long term option there tbh
@@Gjunya that's a cap. Mazaroui has no business as a CAM
Do you think antony will fit amorim given the fact the wingers come inside in the system which suits his strengths rather than holding the width
I think Antony could do the inside forward role from the right rather than the wing back role. If he did do wing back would have to be left side
UGARTE & CASE WAS HOT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This guy is too good. Are you a coach or something?
Used to be.
Eddie howe was the ideal coach for united, we keep doing same thing and expect a different outcome.
For premier league, experience matters
Klopp didn't have epl experience, pep didn't, even dezerbi didn't and they did very ok
Rashford - Hojlund/Zirkzee - Bruno is not as good as Bruno - Hojlund/Zirkzee - Antony frontline. The latter 3 forward line will work much harder and create more chances. Antony might be making his second comeback.
Antony as inside forward is an interesting option
Why don’t you get a job as an analyst at a club? Great analysis.
Our players will destroy his playing style and tactics. I hope he gets rid of players who cannot adjust to his playing style no matter who it is.
Antony could potentially play as one of our wingbacks
Alphonso davies would make a lot of sense. Maybe go for Quenda as well.
Davies would be a good tactical option for the system
Do you Antony could do one of the wingback roles? Hes very onefooted but I feel like he would fit either side as hes a hard worker. Needs to be a lot less selfish but I think he can do it.
Right inside forward or left wing back is where I would use him
Mason mount will work great in this system if he is healthy
Correct
Rashy is Pedro Goncalves but with less work rate, but I think he can thrive under Amorim
Is it fair to say that Ruben style is similar to ETH, but with a better structure? I don't know, I'm asking?
Now the hype for an Eze move to United makes sense 😂
What about Luke Shawif he comes back ? Would he be a wing-back hugging the touchline, or maybe a rotation option for Martinez ? I wonder also what will become of De Ligt, he seems pretty ill-fitted for that system...
Luke as a LCB could work. LWB he would break down
Think Casemiro could do a decent job at RCB in an Amorim setup playing those long balls into the right channel?
Would you have let Ruud been the caretaker manager for the rest of the season and have INEOS take more time to find a suitable replacement for ETG?
I think that for the amount of change Amorim will require for his system to thrive, I’m concerned that if he isn’t a long term solution, you’ll have a bigger squad issue in the next 2-3 years where it’s a mix of this current team and Amorim’s vision.
Unless you believe that Amorim can take United to Top 4 by this season, I’d rather let the long term rebuild begin and see which players need to move on.
zirkzee or höjlund could prob be one of the inside forwards aswell
So, I presume you'd think that Maresca would be a better long term fit than an Amorim. Correct?
I think Amorim doesn't have to revolutionize the team. He has to do a few adjustements and farewells.
And they still have pressing duties and we all know how its with rash
@@AdiNikiVem the angle for rashford is too narrow to be truly effective. Maybe he can have a run at the number 9 position his runs off defenders are underrated
@@AdiNikiVem Rashford is absolutely getting benched no work rate no defensive discipline or ability
@@maxwellsimon1009 no ability? He’s the reason ETH survived his first season. Fans like you are a disgrace
What about vitinha or a Kvara as one of the inside 10s and maybe a a punt but get Mudryk from Chelsea and play him as left side 10
@ayub460 why do you want mudryk are you seeious?
How about mainoo more attacking like as an inside forward ? And Bruno more deep double pivot with ugarte?
Bruno in deeper areas is a nightmare imo and Mainoo for me doesn’t have the consistent goal threat to play as inside forward
Arsenal fan here. I think rashford starts, a rashford that close to goal is a guarantee for 25 goals
Garnacho is definitely not starting. Right hand side should be Antony and amad tbh
Where do you see him starting
Davies and branthwaite would be good in this system
Made for Mason Mount
Who would've been your preferred candidate from the available managers? You said Amorim only resolved 3 deadly sins on X
If the transfer happened, how would you rate bro?
Which transfer
Where did we say he wouldn’t be used as an inside forward (same as Pedro)?
@PythagorasinBoots you did say that Brunol will struggle.
I believe he will struggle if he starts having fits.
Also you said that the tactic rolls to the striker. That happens since they had Gyokeres. First 2 seasons not really like that as Paulinho was more of a team player than a fixed striker and even last year when Paulinho and Gyokeres played together, Paulinho was moved to the side
What I see with Sporting is the obsession of putting bodies inside the box, something which is lacking in United imo
