Music of shadows and luminance, calm and fanfare, Mahler’s Seventh Symphony has divided opinion with its vivid array of contrasting instrumental range, orchestral colour and moods. Whatever your perception of night, Mahler leads the listener through moonlit dreamscapes and grotesque nightmares, culminating in a finale of daylight.

The 7th is vastly underrated but thankfully it's becoming increasingly popular. In fact the first movement is one of Mahler's very greatest and the last movement the finale is a whole lot of fun!

1:17:33 The performers happily ring the cowbell❣️I also felt happy and laughed😆

Great✨This is the ideal "MAHLER SYMPHONY NO.7" that I finally met👏
In their performance, the sound I expected comes at just the right volume, and the tempo is the ideal light tempo, not too loose👍It is an excellent performance that makes it easy for us to understand that all musical instruments are the protagonists, "each and every sound is valuable. There is no useless sound."😋

I couldn't find the perfect compliment in English, but I came up with the word "軽妙洒脱(kei-myou-sha-datsu)".🤔
・"軽" = No stubbornness or dullness
・"妙" = Skillful, to involuntarily exclamation
    ・"洒" = Refreshing and sophisticated
    ・"脱" = Outstanding and excellent

I recalled how elated i was that evening with this least understood of all Mahler's works - the 7th ! Lan Shui handled this epic symphony with impeccable understanding of its massive structure. As far as i recalled the SSO only performed this 7th twice. As compared to a previous reading this time it was far superior. The brasses and woodwinds were well sounded. As usual the strings were just stupendous. It was a gripping performance almost equal to Sir George Solti and far better than Zubin Mehta.

Nice, though first movement as of 12:20 too slow in my opinion. When played 25% faster, the tempo is almost perfect :) Why are the harps glissing the chords at 13:39 ?

I'm not sure why I just discovered this performance. The orchestra is really wonderful. But I have difficulty with some of the conductor's odd tempo fluctuations and changes that I know are not in the score and go beyond free expression. Certain sections of the first movement were excruciatingly slow. Some sections of the last movement were taken so fast as if the conductor had a bus to catch. I really wanted to like this version unreservedly, but I have to give it a mixed review. I shouldn't complain though, because any performance of Mahler 7 is a cause to celebrate.
