You know, I stopped commenting about this ensemble a while back, because I was ashamed of myself for writing the same thing over and over again, but I’m sorry, the intonation, phrasing and blend of this orchestra are absolutely AMAZING!! How privileged maestro Gilbert is to lead such a group of dedicated artists!!

Das war oberaffengeil! Bin sehr froh, es vor Ort in der Elbphilharmonie erlebt zu haben. Mein Tagesausflug von Frankfurt am Main in die Hansmetropole hat sich in jeder Hinsicht gelohnt.
Sehr schön, dass ich dieses wunderbare Konzert hier nun im Video einmal mehr erleben kann.
Am 21. Januar 2023 kommen die Wiener Philharmoniker mit ebendiesem Werk in die Elbphilharmonie. Die Messlatte liegt nun sehr hoch :-)
Das war ein absolut fantastisches Konzerterlebnis! Ich bin sehr dankbar, es live in der Elphi erlebt haben zu dürfen. Toll, dass es die Möglichkeit gibt, hier auf UA-cam noch einmal in Erinnerungen zu schwelgen. Alan Gilbert und das Elbphilharmonieorchester in Topform!
Das freut uns, ein Video kann das Live-Erleben nicht ersetzen, aber wunderber ergänzen :)
Zweifellos eine der besten Kombinationen des Komponisten, des Dirigenten und des Orchesters. Majestätisch, überzeugend doch ein bisschen melancholisch und vor allem wunderschön!

I've been really impressed with these videos of the Elbphilharmonie and Alan Gilbert. Wonderful orchestra, great hall, engaged audience, and terrific production values. Alan Gilbert landed well post-NY Philharmonic.

Orchester von phantastischer Präzision, großartig dirigiert von Alan Gilbert, habe noch niemals vorher die Struktur so klar gehört - auch dank der Akustik der Elbphilharmonie, ich kannte also das Werk noch gar nicht, ja ich werde wohl in meinem Leben keine bessere Aufführung mehr hören.

Aber das Tenorhornsolo von Lukas Gassner im Konzert des BRSO mit Daniel Harding beim Mahlerfest in Leipzig neulich ist um Klassen besser als dieses hier.

Fine performance. Exceptional brass. I don’t envy the clarinets and bassoons sitting in front of those trumpets with essentially no hearing protection.
Thank you very much! Also for your concerns! Of course, soundproofing is a big issue in the orchestra. Good hearing protection is absolutely necessary, such as the sound shields you can see in the video.
Although Claudio Abbado's version is still my favorite, this was still a stunning performance of my favorite Mahler symphony, and perhaps favorite of all symphonies.

In the beginning: Almost impossible to think that so many people in the orchestra can find their own seat, but they do. Perhaps an illustration of how classical music works? Everyone take their own position, it is the togetherness in music that counts. And there I have no doubts about how this will work out. And yes: It is perfect.

Great orchestra, great interpretation, and excellent conductor as always Alan Gilbert,, ( I like very much his "tempo") it is said that the work was inspired by a painting "De Nachtwacht" by Rembrandt, I'm not sure about it, but maybe it is.
The last movement has been criticized as a kind of mockery of Wagner's Meistersingers Overture, which I don't think was the case either, perhaps it was an unconscious inspiration. Mahler deeply loved and respected Wagner.
Finally, without trying to offend, although the mandolin and the guitar are not the main instruments, they should have played with a higher volume, since their sonority is weak compared to the rest of the orchestra.

Those sound shields are almost useless, and these are you low anyway. Danish National and some other orchestras use something called Hearwig Shields, which actually make a difference. I'm surprised they are not required.

So toll !!! Nur eine Frage : Wieso wird das Orchester eigentlich immer vom Oboisten intoniert / geeicht ? Kann mir jemand Auskunft geben ? Danke
Die Oboe ist das Instrument, was am schwersten (nach-)stimmbar ist. Deswegen orientieren sich alle Instrumente an ihr. (wenn sie denn hoffentlich ein a hat, das auch wirklich ein a ist)... ;-)
@@harlanhh1 Das Instrument, das auch zuverlässig das A halten kann, unabhängig von Luftfeuchtigkeit und Raumtemperatur. In Europa gilt meist die Tonhöhe a=442 Hertz, in USA oft a=443 was einen etwas schärferen, helleren Gesamtklang liefert. In der Metropolitan wird in der Regel das a=440 gestimmt, was den Sängern entgegenkommt. Das Einstimmen wird im Orchester vom Konzertmeister (1. Violine, erstes Pult, vorne rechts, d.h. links vom Dirigenten) im Stehen geleitet, meistens zunächst für Blechbläser, dann für alle Holzbläser, schließlich für alle Streicher im Konzert, in der Probe in der Reihenfolge tiefe Streicher, hohe Streicher. Wie man hier in der Elbphilharmonie sieht, kann diese Reihenfolge beim Stimmen von Orchester zu Orchester variieren, sie wird von Chefdirigent und Konzertmeister/Orchestervorstand festgelegt.
Die nasale Stimme ist sehr penetrant und hörbar, dazu noch sitzt die Oboe sehr zentral im Orchester. Zuverlässig? Na, als Flötist lass ich da besser kein Kommentar 🙈
Fine performance. White tie formalwear for the orchestra, pajamas for the conductor. Members of the audience were dressed better than Alan Gilbert. I find that trend saddening.

I mostly like the change. In fact, as a chorist I'd be so glad if we ditched the tuxes in favor of black slacks and black button-down shirts. Since the audience usually isn't going to be in formalwear anymore, I don't really see the point. Uniforms yes, formal no.🤷♂
@@ChollieD I am not opposed to your suggestion. I just prefer the musicians to be similarly attired. If it is a casual attire, then everyone should be similarly attired, and if formal, that would be fine. I speak for myself when I say that the experience of a concert is aural and visual and tactile. I hear the music, see the musicians and feel the music.
@@MegaVicar Why are you so offended by Ed Bognacki's comment. I have to agree the attire should match the orchestra. If the conductor is informal, then everyone should be informal.
