You hit the nail on the head with the last article you brought up. I feel like all the "disturbing" (I'm still at a SUPER low end of the iceberg here, I haven't seen anything on Salo's level quite yet) media I've experienced has legitimately made me appreciate my life more. Enter The Void is a movie that, for about a week, made me feel as optimistic as I realistically could be about my own death. Listening to Lingua Ignota's albums opened my eyes to the perspective of someone who's been abused, and her music has forced me to think a lot about my own faith and broader role in society. Going through Swans' catalog was absolutely euphoric and it wound up being my gateway drug into heavier, longform music. This goes beyond the media I have concrete ideas about now, I'm not sure what Oldboy, Climax, Titane, and Raw really offered in the long run but I still think about those movies a lot and would consider them among my favorites. As usual, your commentary is very engaging and insightful, keep up the good work!

Disturbing art (of any kind) is my favorite thing to "do research" on. Like, I really enjoy reading controversy facts from metal bands and I sometimes do in-depth research on those or generally try to find out more about it. Also I really enjoy some horror genres, especially the ones that make you feel uneasy (analog horror, for example). Or I usually find myself searching for analysis on weird real life incidents or rabbit holes, ARGs, etc. on yt. I don't know why, it just fascinates me, I find it very intriguing.

Salò (the town) is actually a really nice place on Garda Lake that's not far away from my hometown. But of course we Italians will always associate it to being the capital of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana (Italian Social Republic), that was controlled by Mussolini during the WWII nazi occupation of northern Italy. Pier Paolo Pasolini (the movie director) KNEW what itch he was scratching setting De Sade's novel there...

I definitely find that some of the 'disturbing' media that I've encountered has made me appreciate different cultures and life situations. I think I'm more open-minded. However, disturbing media is definitely subjective. I actually think it's fascinating how people have different viewpoints and ideas about a subject that I may have never realized. It has helped me appreciate people more. In my personal life, I struggle with social interaction (thanks to various mental health issues) but being able to understand people a bit more has been helpful to navigate life.
That said, I don't necessarily seek out disturbing media anymore. I think when I was younger, I saw it more of being rebellious and "edgy". Now, not so much, but I don't regret encountering it.
What's even more fascinating for me is seeing how disturbing media has changed through history. How what some might have perceived as disturbing 20 years ago might now be not considered disturbing. And vice-versa.
    Great video!

If "Salo" disturbed you, you must read the book "The 120 Days of Sodom" by Marquis de Sade. The movie just scatches the surface and is literally based just on the first 50 or so pages. 😅

    • @wyattxhim
      @wyattxhim  7 місяців тому +2

Doesn’t surprise me that the book is more disturbing to read .
Seems like any unsettling movie based off of a book is tame in comparison. I keep hearing how the film “Come and See” is an emotional destructive war film (which I’d say it is ) yet it only scratches the surface of the atrocities you’d read about in the book it’s based off of . Guess there’s only so much the artistry of cinema can give a viewer .

I just wanna shoot a quick recommendation to all the fellow dragged into sunlight fans desperate for more in that kind of style until they finally release some new stuff. Gravesend is a pretty new extreme metal band from New York and they‘re gnarly as hell. Maybe a bit less Death Metal influence and more on the Grindcore side of things but equally as heavy in my opinion and their whole imaginary of the dark side of urban life really adds to the vibe. They‘re kinda like someone turned the whole this city is like an open sewer scene from Taxi Driver into music

Really informational video. Had me thinking alot. I am actully 17 right now and once again your channel has helped me broaden the horizon for more disturbing music for me as far as trying to listen to other death metal and black metal bands. But overall what I find disturbing to the point where it's interesting is the violence guts and gore kinda uptake and certain album artwork like tomb of the mutilated or other bands that you probably know of. And also channels like plague moth and how he reacts to the most disturbing and real UA-cam videos and clips of actual cartel execution videos and how mutahar from someordinarygamers will surface the dark web/deep web. I've always found that sort of snuffy horror/Blair witch V/H/S movie horror nature overall fascinating for me. The slasher films alongside of Texas chainsaw massacre is really cool to but what really draws the line of disturbance for me is sexual assault and rape. That's the one thing I hate most in movies and or society. But watching alot of cartoons that meat canyon makes and watching him go over his opinion on horror movies I decided to desensitize myself and watch a film called the sadness. If anyone else other than wyatt is reading this just know it's not for the faint of heart but after I finished the movie I've come to realize that the rape scene and SA scenes weren't as bad as I thought now don't get me wrong it was bad and the eye scene was the worst one but just the fact that they all went crazy during the zombie apocalypse as if it were kings man 2 golden circle in the church scene. Since they were smiling and actually having fun and laughing maniacally while doing what they did during the rape scenes made it seem like they enjoyed it rather than suffered even though watching a bunch of zombified Japanese people having an orge in the middle of the hallway is still disturbing. But just the fact that they seemed to enjoy it made it seem less bad that not. I could be weird for that but aye just my personal opinion.

Aside from morbid curiosity, we're always drawn to "the darkness" for lack of a better term, but it's subconsciously like a personal challenge, to see how much can you stomach. In my experience, as a kid I hated horror movies and even had nightmares from watching The Ring, Halloween and funnily enough, Dead Silence, but then my father showed me 3 movies, Angel Heart, The Shining and Jacob's Ladder, and even though those movies also scared mw shitless, I felt a weird obsession, and as a teen I started seeking out horror movies that stuck with me, eventually in my late teens I found Salò and A Serbian Film and by that point I was very much a horror fan and what personally draws me to horror and disturbing movies is not if it scares or grosses me out, but rather if I'm willing to watch it again, or if it impacted me in a way where I won't.

Like most people here seem to say, of course morbid curiosity through all kinda medias appears to be a good path to enjoy our own responsible life and sensibilities ; and thanks to your channel I have to say I enjoyed a lot !
Just a quick reminder about Salo. Because in my mind this is the most important work of Pier Paolo Pasolini and certainly the most important work on film of the 20th century in a way as like some french directors used to say in the interviews included in bonuses with the french version of the DVD movie, "Salo is important in the way it is all about the reality and the possibility of the idea of fascism," and "we all have in a moment of our lives to be psychologically, politically, ready to see and receive Salo as a piece of art and an understanding of what is fascism".
In this way, with the movie, Pasolini offered a political act through art. And it never used to be a guilty pleasure for morbid curiosity and disturbing content that enhanced the work of the italian director, even if he turned to have to die and being murdered for what he did with Salo...
Here is the point I'd like to discuss or introduce about the political effort disturbing art can afford.
And just to finish this too long thought, I'd be curious to know your view on Begotten and the way Elias Meridge used in this case morbid and disturbing visions to discuss the mostly universal cosmology shared by the humanity ; cause like Salo used to be all about political effort and fascism, Begotten can be understood like a sensitive production to feel the reality of our own fables and anthropological spirituality.
    Thanks for reading

I adore disturbing video games and how they involve the player in the story and actions of the game. I'm also more often than not looking for disturbing stuff with meaning, something that uses disturbed imagery as a metaphor or a symbol, rather than just gore for the sake of gore.

Salò is good, but kinda just whatever. I think the problem is the book it's based on, "120 Days of Sodom," was never finished and was considered lost media outside of a small group of psycologists. The book is highly detailed in the first half, but eventually becomes kind of a rough draft with the author writing notes to himself to fill details later to the point of being a glorified outline of basic events. I think Salò reflects that to the point of harming itself. To me, the point where it just became, "whatever" was after the ass-judging scene, because what they did to be disturbing wasn't built up well, or even at sll. Felt kind of rushed without the setup and payoffs in the torture in the first half, and ultimately climaxed with the suspence of the ass judging contest. There was just so much buildup in that scene to end in a creshendo of "Psyche! We weren't really going to kill this twink. Lol." was probably where the movie blew its load and didn't know where else to go. So by comparison everything presented after was kinda lame. Didn't leave me with a gut-wrenching feeling by the end. It sort of lost that with everything being mostly typical basic bitch internet fetshies and a death montage that, in a way, symbolically representing the movie saying "We're bored and out of ideas."

I read an article about horror fandom once, and one interviewee stated that they grew up very socially insecure and "lesser" than more attractive, socially and physically stronger people. Continiously mustering more and more fucked up films became a form of strength for them - the realisation that you can mentally take this sort of beating. When i saw that, i feel like it answered a question i'd had most of my life, because i definitely was that kid. That extends to art and life itself. A lot of people look away and that is fine, but i don't want to be that person. Someone has to face the shit sometimes. And it's easy to build a community around those who can. Also go figure that a lot of people like that have past traumas - that's why i always kind of laugh at the idea of certain content being traumatising or triggering. For your weak ass maybe. Ultimately, i find it empowering.

My sense of morbid curiosity comes from a place of wonder about how we react to the most disgusting, vile, and sick stuff we find either in real life or online. It's usual the artists that you mention, and/or music artists that push boundaries not just musically but visually as well. Like Silencer creating this person who cut off their hands and sew pigs feet. Any person would go "What the fuck?" But that also led me to be so interested in the music and also getting some sick kicks seeing people with a look of pure confusion, disgust, shocked, any facial expression that indicates a feeling of what the fuck. I also like to look at weird fetishes, movies like my one friend showed involving a mentally disabled man and a pig, artists with unhinged mental disorders painting like Francis Bacon, and like some weird art you find deviantart. I recognize that these are so strange and fucked up, and yet I can't look away because it's just so out of place. Art is a fascinating field that pushes limits beyond what we expect.

I remember when I first saw Wendigoon's iceberg on disturbing movies. At the time, I was pretty innocent when it came to disturbing media, except for sexually explicit media perhaps. I am a furry, and that stuff is very normalized in our community, for better or worse. Regardless, I wasn't really interested in seeking out disturbing stuff. But something about that video really got me down a rabbit hole, and I started to explore the more disturbing parts of humanity.
I discovered a few subreddits that dealt with explicit violence and other disgusting things, I looked up stuff like Funky Town Gore and the Russian Brick-video. At first it was unsettling and made me turn away, but at this point I could probably watch the most gruesome executions without batting an eye.
But the Russian Brick video, which is probably one of the least violent things I've discovered since, is among the worst I've seen; or maybe I should say "heard." The wailing of the man in that video... I can still hear it in my head, and it doesn't get any less tragic. While I don't recommend anyone to look it up, if you must do it, it's right here on UA-cam!
But the worst kind of media you can find is anything involving children. And I'm not just talking about Cheese Pizza, there was a mixtape which went around briefly called Amber Alert. And from what I heard, it all dealt with children or teenagers being assaulted, killed or dying. It didn't contain anything sexually explicit, but that didn't make it any easier to watch. It was so horrible that several seasoned gore watchers, like the controversial Plauged Moth, got visibly shaken when trying to watch it. It was even banned from the gore sites I visit.
I can safely say this: I'm glad that I never got myself a Tor-browser... Because if this is the kind of stuff that bubbles up to the surface web, I don't want to imagine what's down in the Dark Web...
It has certainly put a lot of things in perspective though... It makes you understand why people try to flee their countries, or act suspicious of others. I've only ever seen these things, not experienced them, and I really hope I never need to experience them. But if anyone has survived the kinds of things I've seen, well... I feel for them.

Perhaps it's because I'm old and bitter, but what the majority of people consider "disturbing" these days would have been a typical friday night's vhs watching for us who were kids in the early 80s. What I personally find disturbing tends to be the reaction of people who go nuts trying to "protect" everyone else from such things as their intensity usually goes well above and beyond anything any film-maker,musician or artist dreams up. While Salo is an awesome example of a disturbing film, I would suggest seeking out some 80's christian "scare" films like Hells Bells the danger of rock n roll and see how far the religious folks are willing to go to frighten children into submission. I also find it disturbing that while many extreme metal acts are considered too much for mainstream attention, openly violent gangsta rappers made and make millions off selling stylized violence and personas where they play criminals to sell their products and that became the mainstream.

Art has some expressive value, and disturbing art does have that morbid curiosity element.
But what about people who seek out NSFL content? like the worst possible Gore footage available online? Is that at all healthy? should that kind of curiosity be discouraged?
I know some UA-cam channels devote themselves to discussion of disturbing darkweb media like this, but I don't really see a lot of discussion about the psychological health of consuming it. I think it's especially common for teenage boys to consume it - they seem to be into exploring these extremes and proving how 'hardcore' they are by being able to handle watching them.
Honestly I think NOT being able to handle watching them is a sign of having basic human empathy. I can't watch torture videos, and I think people who watch this type of content should have an avenue to seek help and realize it could be unhealthy to continue seeking that stuff out and consuming it. It has to erode your empathy and connection with reality and sanity at some point.
So yeah I think a discussion about how mentally healthy consumption of that kind of content is would be interesting.

My morbid curiosity definitely led me to discover Death in June and all the rest of neofolk as well as some bands associated with the NS black metal scene. With the latter, once I mentally separated the lyrics from the music (which, mind you, was very hard for me to do at first), I was surprised to see how good some of these bands were instrumentally.

I saw Salo in a theatre in the (early 80's?) and it was packed. Patrons fled the theatre in waves, so that by time of the ending the theatre was only about 1/3rd full. I have argued numerous times that it is not merely exploitation. The first two that die, the male that tries to escape, and the girl that takes her own life, are more heroic than all the others that just capitulate. The character that carries on an affair with the black girl is executed rather than dying trying to escape with the girl. The movie ends with calvary music playing driving home that no there is no John Wayne coming to the rescue, it was always up to the captured students. A far cry from films like Faces of Death, which I will admit to having not seen. My understanding that a lot is faked & there is no real consistent context to the image, so all that is left is pure exploitation.

Two of the “most disturbing movies of all time” are two of my favorites, and funniest movies I’ve ever seen: “Visitor Q” by Takashi Miike and “Pink Flamingos” by John Waters. Both, on paper, are filled with horrendous actions, but the way they’re depicted, and how absurd they are, makes it hilarious. It truly is perspective based. Legalize murder! Live homicide!

Not metal but french hardcore Kickback's '120 murderous passions' is a great piece of music heavily inspired by the New French Extremity movement, it's hated by many because of the lyrical content but it is one of my favorite hardcore records, it was a product of the time in France's art/cinema movements and really fit the atmosphere of the record quite well.
