It's the kind of game that's perfect for playing as a kid with infinite patience, but as an adult I'm not really willing to spend 40 hours figuring out that getting the "your monster is tired/stressed!" message even once means you're already tanking their lifespan. That said, that makes it even worse for someone like Joel, and it doesn't help that chat is just going to be making guesses and he'll take it as gospel.
the learning curve for the original psx games is so high with the monster lifespans too, it'll be interesting to see what happens if Joel plays more of it

Would help if the game gave you a practice battle instead of throwing you into the deep end right away. I got this game recently and only knew how to play because I played a bit of monster rancher DS in the past. Even then I forgot the importance of conserving guts and spent the first few tournaments spamming attacks and hoping for the best.
"Work more efficiently, not harder" might be the most unintentionally funny thing Joel has ever said. I'm assuming it was unintentional because his sarcasm is usually more obvious.

Feels good to be back playing first party Nintendo games for the first time in a decade My trusty old Vita is still going to be useful as a handheld emulation system since the Switch is still locked down pretty tight unless you want to hunt for old models

Jade Cocoon was a 4th monster raising game on playstation off the top of my head. but joel was probably thinking of Azure Dreams which was a DISASTER Roguelike, Monster raising sim. Need I say more?
So happy Joel finally played Monster Rancher. I'm hoping he might play some of the later entries. In fact I think they're much better starting points for a complete newcomer. 2 is the gold standard for hardcore metagame players but for newcomers and casuals it's cryptic as hell and requires too many monster species to be unlocked in ways that are impossible to figure out on your own. Plus the later games added a lot of neat features like raising multiple monsters at a time and way more training methods.
I remember having similar toy/game console in early 2000s. You used it to scan barcodes and you got monsters out of it. You could then stick 2 of those consoles together and battle with others.
I know the Anime, but i ve never seen or played this game. It never was released in europe as far as I know. I didnt know it was already out on the switch! I want to try it out too!
I think that fourth game Joel was talking about might have been Fossil Fighters. But probably not since the game came out in 2005 and had some decent perception.

So happy Joel finally played Monster Rancher. I'm hoping he might play some of the later entries. In fact I think they're much better starting points for a complete newcomer. 2 is the gold standard for hardcore metagame players but for newcomers and casuals it's cryptic as hell and requires too many monster species to be unlocked in ways that are impossible to figure out on your own. Plus the later games added a lot of neat features like raising multiple monsters at a time and way more training methods.

This is what sold me on the game.
I remember having similar toy/game console in early 2000s. You used it to scan barcodes and you got monsters out of it. You could then stick 2 of those consoles together and battle with others.
