    Hi Will, looking forward to following the development of your layout, I've used foam on my small layouts as well of course I have an unlimited supply of polystyrene to carve out scenery as well , maybe a goods shed or freight gate for a variety of loads coming in. Regards Andy

    Immediate thoughts when you mention space available - just an idea
    Switching/fiddle yard (fully detailed - ballasted, junk, dirt, etc.) up to the corner where an "edge of urban" view can lead into medium sized industrial just outside of town. (something like a concrete depot or even Tar depot to allow for heated tank wagons etc.) Little bit of open paddock/greenery like maybe a creek or river to cross, now into single track over the bridge and a single track (maybe a short loop) typical Victorian station leading to another small section of single track that can take you to a sector plate or Track Cassette system for the "end of the line".

    It's a treat to watch a Victorian Railways (always will be VR to me) layout from inception. Although I don't like the eyesore that is catenary, it would be interesting to see it modelled to later watch Taits and L-class etc. do their thing. And it is symbolic of Melbourne/Latrobe Valley railway settings. I'm recently pensioned with an interest in scale models in dioramas, so a keen eye will be watching any layout landscaping. I'm also a non-millennial renter and liked your reference to arraying the layout to suit your circumstance. Excellent!

      I understand that, i think I'm wanting something a little different, as i see most modellers doing Victoria or VR layouts doing more regional themed layouts, which there's of course nothing wrong with!

    Hey Will. Remember as a kid riding down to the Maribynong sidings for a look. Was an interesting place with the briquette plant sidings and the soda ash being unloaded from obf wagons in another part. Pronto concrete had a plant there which recieved with a single siding one wagon of cement that sat in the open whilst being unloaded. May be food for thought with planning.

    I look forward to seeing your layout grow and develop as build it, Looks like it'll be great fun!
    As someone who lives in Melbourne's east, Lilydale does have, or rather did have a medium sized open cut limestone mine that I believe was serviced by rail which would make for a good industry, even in a small space. The Yarra Valley does also have quite a large wine industry spread all across as you head out towards Healesville and Yarra Glen which could make for nice scenery. As for that station area, a small maintenance area could look nice.

    Hey Will , More importantly than any suggestion given - do what you're really wanting to model , but , where there's very little to work with & suggestions are needed , try a bit of everything that you can as a bit of branch line working meeting up with some mainline working is always what ties both worlds together on a layout ; I've done a bookshelf railway in N scale with a station at both ends & a bridge in the middle to separate both ends & as a reason for each end & the pics can be seen in my "Layout" page of my "Kev's Workshop" website ; Best of Luck & keep up the good work.

    I like the idea of a station in the middle though it doesn't need to be complicated just a single track for the platform, though if you have the room an island platform and two tracks would be better. Also you could include sidings for storing off peak locos much like they have in Eltham on a track that parallels your main and the line to the grain silos and have it under wires, again if room allows. Either way glad to see you getting track down and having a blast doing it☺

    Get some tracksetta laying tool(s) for your curves, They help big time. Greenstuff World rolling pins, get a brick shape one, roll it on some of that foam, weather it up. easy background for shots. Looks like a switching puzzle and an engine yard will be needed for all the hundreds of locos you'll have, Will.

    • @WillJamesRailways
      @WillJamesRailways  3 роки тому

      I actually have picked some up! Mainly just to gauge a 24" curve at the moment, which even then seems almost a bit tight for say the VR E cars or N Set's Ive got. But they still get around it, no dramas with the 4 wheelers.
      Thanks for the tip, that sounds like a great idea!

    Hi Will, nice to see you constructing a layout, it's a great hobby. I would give consideration to having at one end of the layout a terminus station which will allow you to run a train into the station, uncouple the locomotive run back on a passing loop then hook up at the back of the coaches, the train can then depart with the loco travelling tender first. With a point to point layout a turntable can be usefull. Good modelling. Cheers Greg....Australia

    Could go for a station yard where larger grain trains come in to be disbanded into shorter mill rakes.
    So say a 12 wagon train goes into the yard with an L class or 2 then have a t class take 3-4 hoppers to the silo?
    Then you can incorporate the principle towards a cement plant.

    Great start to your layout. I would go for an electrified suburban station with the two industries you have already. I'd also add a goods shed so you can run some other types of wagons and some electric parcel Van's. Keep the electric overhead to the station and yard so you have an excuse to shunt the industries with your W class. This should give a good variety of trains to run.

    Well, this is exciting for you. Once you start constructing it, you will know if you are over-reaching or not. Just stand back and think about what you are planning and it will make sense as you go along. As for the catenary, fantastic idea but please make it functional. Fake catenary is one of my pet hates. I am in the middle of constructing my own layout. Also due to lack of space, I have made a base board that has castors on one edge and can be flipped up and wheeled away to be stored up against a wall. It makes grades and bridges impossible 😢 but at least I will have a decent layout to run my trains on. I'm retired and recently discovered the hobby (in last years lockdown) and started down the vintage Tri-ang path. I have many lovely things now. Very unlike the super scale trains! haha. I've always been of the opinion that to build a realistic layout, look to the prototype! Not necessarily to reproduce an actual location, but work out what the prototype may have done in your circumstances and go from there. A VR-inspired outer suburban location should be quite interesting. A small goods yard, plus cement distribution depot would fit the scenario quite well. Though, I would think that a location on the outskirts of Melbourne would be more likely to have a facility to process wheat, such as a flour mill, pet food factory, rural supplies business, etc, rather than a receival silo.
    Your basic ideas appear to be quite sound and I am looking forward to seeing how you realise them!

These item would dictate what type of wagon you would need. Loco power would depend if you had overhead wires or not.

I knew this day was coming, so, my 10 carriage Ghan set, pair of GM's, trio of NR's are still in original packaging and will probably stay that way. Will, I don't think you can ever "over reach" as such. It's entirely what suits you and your budget. I am lucky in that I have huge triple garage that is no longer a garage where I can expand as I like. I run an HO scale layout mainly older British diesel hauled and DMU stock. I had a heap of old Triang catenary that was given to me as a kid, and i dug that out of storage, sadly not all could be used but most was fine. I do have a Walker rail car in HO and a couple of S class diesels, and quite a few older Lima NSW carriages and locos, but hey, I just mix it all up. That's half the fun, but I see your point in running the Taits and Harris, etc. The up side is that if you don't like what you built, you just take that section apart and try an alternative. Iv'e done that with modules. I even run an HO W class tram on old Triang series 3 track. Works a treat. The old steel track wont rust if sprayed with Inox, in fact I hardly ever have to clean the normal track due to spraying Inox on a rag and wiping it on tracks twice a year. It is not about really "clean" tracks like the "purists" keep saying, it is about conductivity, which Inox assists with. The tracks can be black but if Inox has been used, it is like a new track. Inox keeps contact between wheels and track. Cleans the wheels of rolling stock as they roll around too..I never use a track rubber now, they only leave invisible "pitting" on the rails anyway that hold grime, which the naked eye cannot see. Now i am getting pedantic though. haha. I reckon keep going the way you are and try what you like. If it doesn't suit later just change it. That's half the fun. Hobbies, especially model railways, are a learning curve, even for experienced people. Some new idea always pops up. And changing a few things later is fun also. I think your layout will turn out great. It is not all about huge space anyway, it is how what space you have is utilised. Endless options. However the small staging yard as vandenbricks suggests here would be the way to go and see how you like it.

    • @WillJamesRailways
      @WillJamesRailways  3 роки тому +1

      Ah i think it's the old, 'i want it all now' problem, but yeah absolutely just need to build to the space and try not to over clutter it! Sounds like you've got quite the layout if it's taking up that much space?!
      I'll take a look into Inox! sounds like quite a product!
      Absolutely, and like a real railway, some what always changing!
      Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment, and watching the video. It's very much appreciated!

    • @125sloth
      @125sloth 3 роки тому

      Will, it is not a "huge" layout really, but reasonable. It is just nice to have the room to work around it, and expand if I feel the need again. Certainly look into the Inox. I found Bunnings cheaper than Supercheap Auto for it, strangely enough. I think I paid 11 dollars for a can. Lasts for over a year, even more. Make sure it is the Inox MX3 original formula. That is the one that works well on model railways. It feels slippery after wiping off but it doesn't affect loco traction, even on reasonable inclines, but traction tyres being rubber do not always like it. OK on level surfaces though. Even the Brits are catching on to the Aussie product. You can clean rolling stock wheels the "normal" way as well with this stuff with a cotton bud or whatever. It will not harm plastic either. Some people use automatic transmission fluid to clean the track, and it does work, but Inox is way better, and lasts for ages too, and it is designed to work with electrics as well as penetrate/lubricate, and the rolling stock picks it up and puts it down along the track so to speak. Transmission fluid needs to be placed at various points around the layout to be "carried along". inox doesn't. I have thrown out any track rubber I had, even the Peco ones.

  • @codystrains8941
    @codystrains8941 3 роки тому +1

    I think that you should go with the electric wires over the track so that you can run l class locos and other electric locos, also the electric wires would look cool in my view.

    I am on my 3rd layout in the same small bedroom / study. Even tried N scale for a while. Too small for me.
    This last attempt is my most ambitious and longest project. I'm more into railfanning than switching. space is very tight so the plan is an around the ceiling layout. Of course I'm not going to just put trains up there by hand. It has to be a helix. So back in 2018 I built a 2 lane, 8 level HO scale helix. about 1.6 grade. and it still goes nowhere. Great staging though.
    I do have a squashed oval at the lower level with my computer desk and workstation underneath, So i have trains going overhead as I sit at my computer.
    Once I knock a hole in the wall through to the living room I know it's point of no return and I'll need to think a lot more about what the hell I have done and need to do. So I've been procrastinating for years. until..
