@JonsMotoGarage Hey, I'm looking for a beginner bike and went to all the shops nearby and could not find anything that fit me. I'm 6'3 / 6,4 (in between ish) and weight about 300 lbs. I'm 20 years old and looking for a first bike. There is a 2016 Yamaha Stryker with 2000km for sale near me. Would the bike be a good fit. Are parts easier to find. Is it reliable. Will I make the bike look like a grom? Thanks
This was my second bike. I was saving my pennies for a Harley Lowrider. But loving all things on 2 wheels I stopped by the local Yamaha dealership in ‘08. Wow! Had no idea this bike even existed. Test rode and bought one within a week. Saved 3K vs the Harley. It’s actually around 650 lbs. and not 750. That’s because of an aluminum frame. Vance and Hines pipes and a power commander make this thing even more of a beast. I bought a quick release sissy bar for the ladies and a quick release windscreen for longer/colder weather rides. I still haven’t found, after 11 years, a comparable replacement. It’s just that good. For the money, I mean. You can of course drop over 20k for a new screaming eagle packaged Harley. And then have the engine upgraded beyond that. But for 14.5K new and well under 10K used....the Raider is amazing. Great review!
Heck yeah! Apparently yamaha didn't market the bike too well. Seems like most people ran across these almost by accident (myself included). You hit the nail on the head - hard to find a better big twin cruiser for the money. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!
Wow, in 2019, found a 2013 Raider, like 5000 miles, mint condition, $6300.00. Haven't seen one that new, that nice, that cheap since. It looks great next to my 2 1800 vtxs' , and 06 R1.
I just upgraded from 2007 vstar 1100 to 2012 raider. This is a dream machine. So much fun. It can go fast and it’s not scary at all. The bike is very beautifully balanced. For a bike that big it’s so nimble. Also my vstar 1100 is so much fun after riding raider. It’s smaller and feels like a toy that you can toss around in any direction lol.
Not sure if you'll get this message after 2 years but: what 1100 v star do you have? I have an 1100 custom and I find it really "wobbly" at low speeds (puttering). Seems like it wants to flop over and I have to fight it to keep it upright. Once I get going I'm fine. Now, I'm only 5'8" and find my neck and shoulders start to ache after about 30 minutes. My last bike was a 1200 nightster and I didn't have these issues at all. The only reason I got rid of the nightster was the suspension was WAY too short for the rough roads I ride on. It was always bottoming out no matter what I set the rear suspension at.
I know this is a year ago, but are you sure you don't have any bubbles in your tires? Also there's a big difference in balancing between a V star and a nightster. Example I went from a dirty bikes and riding a dual sport to my midnight roadstar (bigger version of the V?) And the balance for riding and cornering/turning was so weird to me at 1st, but now I'm a pro at it and keep up with rockets on winding roads.
Your videos are awesome and I don't know many channels that focus on motorcycles like you. Though I don't ride, I know some people who would be interested in your stuff - so I'll send them your way! Keep it up!
Good review. Appreciate the love for the Raider. I've owned my Raider for almost 9 years now and I love it. Not a starter bike, for sure. You can definitely hit 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Don't be afraid to redline those RPMs and you can get it in under 4 seconds.
Nice! I love hearing from long time raider owners. The consensus is always the same - it's an awesome bike! Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!
I bought a blacked out 2014 Raider SCL (new in 2015) for $12k (MSRP $17K). It was my first bike. I still have it and still love it. I am 6'5" and weigh 195lbs. Thus, I needed a bigger bike to be comfortable. If you are tall, this is a great bike. As a starter bike, take it easy. The first two seasons I did not push (and really still don't) and had no issues.
I am looking heavily at a low mileage warrior, but have also stumbled across several low mileage raiders. Im kinda torn between the 2. I currently have a HD Superglide sport for cruising duties but am looking for a big bore Japanese machine. These bikes have always been interesting to me. Im concerned that the Raider will be too long and chopperish for me since I am used to the Superglide sport with mid controls. Those inverted warrior forks look solid, and the more aggressive rake/trail numbers may suit me more. Opinion?
@@thatoneguy2756 crazy you mention the warrior! I'm literally sitting here editing a warrior ride/review/warrior vs low rider s (sort of) video. Should be live by wnd of day. I've sold/ridden a few warriors but it had been yrs since I rode one last. They have always been my favorite muscle/performance cruisers. Not necessarily the highest ranking in terms of performance (against vrod, vmax, m109r, vyx 1800, etc.), but overall the coolest looking and best ride IMO. A buddy of mine picked one up recently and let me take it for a spin. It was better than I had remembered. And his is a 2002! Anyway, I think either would be a great bike, but I would opt for the warrior personally. Not as comfortable or good for the long hauls, but a lot funner ripping around.
@@JonsMotoGarage Im gonna subscribe! Looking forward to this video! I currently own a Superglide sport, and the lowrider s is the updated version of mine.
@@thatoneguy2756 Hecks yeah! Much appreciated, brotha! Also, if you wanna have your bike featured in the next subscriber shout out, send me pics and any info you'd like to share to jonsmotogarage@gmail.com. 👍😎
I upgraded from a Warrior to a Raider and would not go back. It has about the same horsepower as the Warrior due to its heavy but rides like a Cadillac. It handles wind and the interstates so much better. So far I have never had a car or bike beat it off the line.....and its stock. After 45k miles I have only replaced the battery, brakes and rebuilt the master cylinders for the clutch and brake due to a lot of traffic riding. For starter bikes I recommend a dual sport and learn to ride in the dirt. When you master dirt you can ride anywhere without ending up as a hood ornament for a cager.
Hahaha..."hood ornament for a cager!" I'm gonna steal that phrase (I'll give you credit!!). You're probably the 12th person to recommend learning on dirt first. I think you're all on to something. Lol. Yeah, the Raider definitely has the comfort and power. Sounds like you've gotten some solid miles on yours. Thanks for watching and commenting, brotha! Ride safe!

@@thatoneguy2756 The raider is a better version of HDs Rocker C. The warrior is the answer to HDs Vrod. If you want more sport the Warrior is alot shorter, smaller and more nimble. Its also several hundred pounds lighter. If you want something that feels different than a regular cruiser I would say go for it as it has Yamaha R1 front and rear end. But......I still can do everything I did on the Warrior on the Raider. It just takes a little more handling in the corners.
My first bike was a 1980 Suzuki GSX1100... I’ve owned a Harley 1200... but out of all the only thing I didn’t like about my GSX was the mid controls.. 🤷🏼♂️ but I’ve been looking and looking and doing research now for about 1-2 years and I think I’m gonna go with a raider! Especially since I’ve gotten older and more mature and experienced as a rider.
Nope. Just take it slow. It's a heavy bike with a lot of power but it handles really well for a cruiser. Don't jump on it and grab throttle. Just take some time to get used to it. It's my 1st cruiser and I love every second I ride it.
just one thing i wish i had on my raider is a 5 gallon tank!!i have to fuel up nearly as much as i did on my 2 gallon sportster///the huge engine does a little more than sip gas.other than that this bike is better than any hd ive owned and i got tired of paying for the name, excellent excellent bike yamaha killed it
i had a 13 raider loved it one thing i hated every year the back tire needed replacing never did burn out just lots of torque and heavy bike thats about 5 to 6 thousand miles a year i live in northern new York hate to see if i lived down south, fun to ride, massive torque, comfortable im 6'1 290 pounds
I love the looks of the Raider! I have a 2005 Yamaha Warrior and have never been in love with the way it looks, I would MUCH MUCH rather have a Raider 👍
absolutely.... not.... the power band is more manageable than a sport bike, but way to much weight for someone just starting to get the feel of things. I move through bikes quickly, but would not suggest something this size as a first bike at all. rebels and shadows are good "starter" bikes, the shadow not being outgrown so quickly of the two. there are similar bikes with other companies that fall into the categories/style of those that would do well too. I jumped to a 1800 within Id say 3 or 4 months of riding time, in ways I both regret and don't regret it at the same time. the 1800 was way to heavy (granted a couple hundred pounds more than the raider) but the jump in weight was a lot. but was the exact bike I wanted for all the riding I do (about 1,000-1.500 miles per month) the 1100 I had bought as my second one would be great but the value of the bike limited how much I wanted to customize it to suite my style. and I still have it. so if you wanna add another one to your little collection ;)
Well said. My first bike was a shadow 600 - probably should've started on the rebel. Lol. I agree that, in general, the raider is too big for newbies. Heck, I can still barely handle it! Lol. I've sold a few vtx 1800's (been a while). If I recall correctly, those seemed to be torquier (if that's even a word) and felt a bit more gnarly from a new rider perspective. It seems like the raider is somewhat tame, despite being such a big engine. All relative of course. Anyway, thanks for checking the vid and sharing your input. Ride safe!
@@JonsMotoGarage its not so much the torque I had problems with. it had a very smooth power curve. it was than it was almost 400lbs heavier than my 1100 and leaning in and out of corner were more challenging, specially at lower speeds. every 200lbs of weight even if the weight is lower center of gravity is like having another passenger. sport bikes you dont want to jump up to high to fast cause of snappy power and the curve jumps with small adjustments and you have a light weight bike that can literally get ahead of you. cruisers its not so much the power or torque (all tho you hit the throttle and you can break traction for a block and a half) its the weight and turning capability. (specially if its what you take your first road test on) but I did enjoy the vid! and would easily recommend the raider as a second bike as I have test rode a friends and it was a really nice bike. keep the shiny side up!
I rode a 100cc trial bike, (Honda XR100) from ages 13-28, (15yrs). And my first street legal motorcycle? 2012 Yamaha Raider S in May of 2018. Of course I was 38yrs old. It was new with 1 mile in the Yamaha dealership. Would I recommend it as a first bike for someone? NO. I would recommend a rider buy a trail bike motorcycle. That way you learn the controls, how to shift, what gear to be in, when to down shift to slow down, leaning, turning, braking, and so on. Learning all of this OFF ROAD! Then after a year or two off road then I would recommend a used street legal motorcycle if your over 18yrs. If your 18-30yrs old I would recommend a cruiser as I would NOT recommend a sportbike, (crotch rocket, streetbike) for anyone under 30yrs old, preferably no one under 35yrs old. Under that age young adults still have a lot of "play" in them and do stupid stuff on bikes. And yes if you get a cruiser you can still do stupid stuff on it like accelerating too fast, taking turns too fast, and passing other vehicles with oncoming traffic to close, but it is not as easy as it is on a Sportbike. So would I recommend a Yamaha Raider for a person's first motorcycle? NO! I would recommend a off road motorcycle for at least a year or two to get all the basics learned off road. Then a used cruiser on road if over 18yrs old. And if your over 35yrs old then after learning on a off road motorcycle and driving a cruiser for at least 2yrs then yeah maybe try a Sportbike. That's my recommendations for a first time motorcycle rider.
I had a 2008 in Tommy Blue. It was the most neutral riding motorcycle I have EVER owned. I have had people make nice comments about the bike....most of them thought it was a Harley. They were surprised to find out it was a Yamaha/Star. I would tell people who are reading this, don't be fooled by the size of the bike....it handles quite well and is balanced. Surpass the Stryker and get the Raider. I would add a Harley-Davidson Breakout to the list of being a bike comparable to the Raider. I own a 2017 Pro Street Breakout and it DOES NOT handle anywhere close to the Raider. The Raider should outperform my Breakout in handling and cornering without a problem and both bikes have fat tires in back. I wish that the Raider had cruise and a sixth gear....hence why I own the CVO Breakout. Peace and ride safe!
Yeah, I always say the Raider is the best kept secret among cruiser motos. You just can't beat it! Ride safe, brother! And as always, thanks for checking the vid!
Yeah, I think Yamaha really did a good job with it. Probably a bit ahead of its time, and they must not have done a good job marketing it. I've yet to ride a breakout, but hear they're complete monsters as well. I should've mentioned that as well. Thanks for checking the vid!
Hey Jon, I am 65 yrs. old and haven't ridden a bike in 2o yrs. I have driven my smallest 650 Yamaha and Bonneville ,750 CB Honda 4 cyl. the first year they came out,nd then Harley's from 1000 and 1200 cc to electra glide 1200 cc. I am looking for a used bike tp go riding with my son, my last bike. Been looking at used Harley's a lot. I saw your review of this bike today and I must say that it and the 1300 cc counter part looked really well built. What do you think about the quality and price diff. for an out of shape old geezer? Thanks.
First off, thanks for checking the channel, and thanks for reaching out! If you dig the look, feel, and ultimately, the ride of the raider or stryker (I think you will), then I would highly recommend it from a ride perspective. From the bit of research I've done, you'll be solid in terms of reliability as well, but I haven' ridden one enough to really speak to the longevity (I think you'll be good). Pricewise, you're going to get a whole lot more if you opt for the raider or stryker compared with the harley counterpart. Where I live, they're both a bit hard to come by. It's very hit or miss if you'll find them on the used market, but they do pop up from time to time. in fact, I might pick up a stryker this coming week. Hope this helps. I'm on my way in to work. Otherwise, I'd elaborate a bit more. Keep me posted! Ride safe!
Would I recommend this bike as a first bike? As someone who started out riding dirt bikes when I was 11 years old probably not. I've always felt that you should start out learning to ride dirt bikes before moving on to street bikes. Simply because wrecking in the sand is a lot more forgiving than wrecking on the street.
I've had a handful of guys make the same recommendation. Definitely seems like the best way to dial in your skills and learn the fundamentals. I've still yet to ride a real dirt bike. Lol. But I hope to pick one up at some point. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Been riding for almost 2 years now and I currently have a Sportster 883 and I’m looking for something with a little more power that I can grow into and not out of. My biggest concern is reliability as all the raiders I’m finding have 15-20k miles on it. I heard as long as you have them serviced regularly I shouldn’t have any issues getting it up to 50k. Also I’m only 5’6” so I didn’t know if there are any other riders around this height who found that the Raider was a little too much of a stretch for them. I should be checking one out next week so I’ll be able to throw a leg over one!
@@albertogarcia6332 I forgot I even commented this, I ended up getting an 08 VRod and loved it but now I’m looking to sell it and get into a hyper naked bike, preferably an MT-10
Depends on the size of the rider.... 6’ +, and 200 pounds or bigger than it is doable for a 1st bike. Obviously common sense and caution will be needed. But it’s a possible first bike.
NICE! I watched your "who said the raider doesn't do turns" vid a few months back! Every time I think the raider isn't for touring, I remember your set up. Looks pretty awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!
If some beginner would ask me, i would not advise to get this monster. But people are free to do what the heck they want. I own the Deep Red Metalic 2008 and I f... love it. I can tell that I would not even get it as a second bike. First bike should be under 1000cc. Until getting the 1900cc, can always get. His brother, the Striker. Harley guys can’t easily mistaken the Raider for a Harley. Few of them asked me. And we just don’t transform a custom style bike into a touring one.
I just bought a Yamaha raider 1900 air raider intake and engine turner in perfect condition. It’s my second bike before I drove Harley DYNA LOW RIDER; I spent a lot but I liked the oil mess, you could give me some recommendations when driving and in maintenance I’m your follower I like the videos what you do and your motorcycles, I’ll appreciate your
@Johns Moto Garage -We are similar in size. So, I wanted to get your opinion. I'm torn between the Raider or a 2012 Nightrod or VRod Muscle. I'm not a new rider by any means have put a lot of miles on a R6 and driven several heavy cruisers.I just wanted to hear which you liked better and for what reasons, if you don't mind.
As far as the chopper look: fury, break out, wide glide, stryker. In terms of shear power: yamaha road star warrior, Honda vtx 1800, suzuki m109r, victory hammer. Those are what come to mind. But it's hard to find something that really compares across the board.
You are doing really great reviews!👍 I can't believe that you doesn't have more views and subs?!? Great video and audio quality👍 Awesome that you actually testing the bikes instead of just ride the highway! 👍 And really funny seeing you ride a skatepark 😂 I can maby think of Nitro Circus doing that, not some "average bike review Guy" I'am glad someone is diffrent! IS that a Radial VTwin or an Offset Vtwin? I know it's pushrod operated, and they made a 113ci version for their eluder, but I can't see if its an offset design or not.
That Kawasaki Mean Streak looks as if it might be a good bike" but the Yamaha Raider is smoothly powerful , I mean its no Vmax but it will hold its own.
Yeah, for 99% of us, 1900 is gonna be waaaaay to much. But there's 1% that can pull it off and live to tell the tail. Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've come close to buying this bike a couple of times but always ended up with something else. But I do think it's a great bike. It's definitely the cream of the crop of all the bikes you mentioned, with the exception maybe of the VTX 1800, and equally good bike.
What years was/is this bike made? What is the medium used price? What can you do o-60 and top speed. It didn't seem on the video to have a lot of torque for the size of the engine. Thanks, great view you certainly have a garage full.
Thanks for checking out the vid. I believe yamaha produced these from 2008-2017. I honestly don't know the torque, hp, and 0-60 specs off top of my head. Although I think someone may have left them somewhere in the comments. It doesn't feel quite as torquey as the harleys in the lower rpms. It seems to be a bit more spread out. No lack of power though when you get on it and still a torque monster imo. If you get a chance, I highly recommend taking one for a spin. Prices on the used market should be $4500-$8000 depending on mileage, yr, condition, etc.
@@JonsMotoGarage man i call bs on that.you were shifting in too low rpm's so yeah it sounded like you were lugging it..this bike is a torque monster when you shift it correctly.it is on par if not exceeding hd's torque in feel.also with "stage one" upgrade, mine feels more like a stage 3 hd.stop short shifting it,rev out each gear a little more and hold on.
@@rmtwofiftyzmann This is true. I'll admit I wasn't accelerating or shifting real hard with that in mind. My thoughts regarding the torque are purely anecdotal. @@JonsMotoGarage cool man i'll sub.and i think any bike rather than dirtbikes should have tachs.these engines produce max torque at 2500rpm is what i read....
@@JonsMotoGarage The Vmax (1200, not 1700) was surprisingly SMALL. The "monster" part of it was the acceleration / top speed, if you chose to wind it up past 4k RPM. Anything below that it was a pussycat, and frankly I hated the handling and seating position. (hence why it's no longer with me)
@@richardhodge4556 hahaha...pussy cat. That's a good deacription. Lol. I still think you'd be fine on the raider. Sound alike you have a solid foundation to work off of.
Jon's Moto Garage Have you reviewed any Adventure class bikes, or plan to? I rode the 1200gs a few times and fell in love. I’d be happy with a cheap knockoff like the v-strom, lol. Completely opposite sides of the scale from the Raider. Guess I’ll need to buy them all!!!
Nice touches! I ended up selling this bike (vid to come). The dude who bought it already has tons of plans for it. He's gonna send me pics of the upgrades, so I may repost some on the channel. Thanks for watching, brother! Ride safe!
A buddy of mine has one with an aftermarket exhaust. It's so loud nobody can ride within a 100 metres of him. He's deaf as a post and turns off his hearing aids while riding. Our riding abiities are about equal. On the twisties I leave him far behind . I'm on an 07 Wing. He can't sell it, so he's kind of stuck with it.
Hahaha...deaf as a post. Lol. The goldwing is a monster to be reckoned with, no doubt about it. No wonder he can't keep up with you. Thanks for watching! Ride safe!
My 1st bike was a 2006 HD streetrod a version of the Vrod. Top heavy bitch that I dropped twice. Sat on a victory hammer that was 600 cc bigger motor but was way easier to ride. Lower seat to the ground and steady. That bike would have been a better 1st bike for me even though it was 1731 cc. That said I think I was a little crazy starting out on that Vrod.
I re-wathched and you're totally right. That was the worst cali roll ever. I'm usually pretty good at stopping, but clearly not as good as I thought I was. Thanks for pointing that out. Time to pay more attention while rambling on. Thanks for watching! Ride safe!
Im seeing these bikes going for closer to 8-9k now. Around 10k miles. Think that's acceptable today? Really sweet bike and definitely one I'm thinking of for my next bike.
I am probably picking up a Raider tomorrow. It's a 2014 Raider S with only 1200 miles on it. I'm pretty pumped and a little nervous lol. I'm not a beginner but I'm not that far off from it either. Only been riding for about a year and my current bike is a 750 Shadow. I have riden a buddies 1500cc Kawasaki and it was only awkward at first and then I got used to it. I'm hoping it's the same with the Raider. I plan on taking it easy and learn it first. Problem is.... I have a 7 hour ride back with it and a lot of it is on the freeway in hot as hell California/Arizona heat/traffic. Definitely a little worried about that lol. Trying to get something I wont grow out of and wont need to upgrade, at least not for a very long time. Wife would kill me if I got something smaller and then wanted to upgrade again. She don't really understand the difference between bikes so she thinks I am just getting more of the same over and over again :/
Be very conservative when you jump on a Raider. It's NOT a 750. The torque and acceleration is sick. I've ridden a LOT of bikes that are very fast but the Raiders torque is awesome. As long as you are responsible and respect it, you'll be fine. The low center of gravity makes it very comfortable and fairly easy to ride. It's a very heavy bike so make sure you're careful at low speeds. Just use that clutch wisely and you'll be fine. The clutch and transmission are incredibly smooth. Just play it safe for about a month and get a feel for it. The first time I cracked the throttle all the way, it literally put my butt on the passenger pillion. I'm 6'4 and 230 pounds. The Raider is a torque monster. I absolutely love my Raider and can't imagine not having one. It was my first cruiser and I was a little nervous at first. I mean it does have 1855cc's. Just respect it and don't do anything stupid. You'll be fine. It's a fantastic all around cruiser. The power difference between your 750 and the Raider is gonna be night and day but you'll love it!! It's addictive knowing that the Raider has power for days in all 5 gears. Just cruise on it for awhile till you're comfortable. Don't crack that throttle thinking it's a 750. Good luck and I really hope you get one. They're absolutely amazing!!
Thanks for the info and tips. I ended up getting it. It's a 2012 Raider S with only 1400 miles on it. Waiting for it to get delivered. Super pumped for it. I know it's night and day difference from the 750, but have been practicing not rolling so hard on that throttle when changing gears, trying to get my second nature habit away from that so I don't accidently pull on that throttle too hard on the Raider like I do on my Shadow.
@@brianbalcer I'm really happy for you man. My Raider makes me so happy everytime I ride it. It had the Power Commander 5, Cobra Slashdown exhaust, ( with baffles removed) and a K&N air filter when I bought it. It runs so well! I put a 240 rear tire on it and rides great!!! You're gonna love it. It's so freaking comfortable and a pleasure to ride. You're not gonna want to stop riding it.
This one is stock exhaust, and also living in California, It's illegal to mod the exhaust/air take/fuel processor. I can't even get a slip on exhaust mailed to my location lol. I heard people like the 240 rear over the 210. I figured it would handle a little worse being wider, but people seem to say otherwise. Can the 240 go on the stock rim?
@@brianbalcer The 240 goes right on the stock rim. The stock exhaust is SUPER quiet. An aftermarket exhaust really wakes everything up and makes the Raider sound like a true VTwin. Plus the stock exhaust is huge. I think a TON of ppl in Cali find ways to get exhausts. I'd look into it. There are a ton of motorcycle shops out there that will help you if you want.
Yeah, the warrior, m109r, hammer, and vtx 1800 all seem more twitchy or torquey (not sure the best way to describe it). The way I put it is the raider feels more tame, even though it had plenty of power to unleash. Some of those performance cruisers are straight scary! I love the warriors! Shame they're so hard to come by these days.
I'm 6'3 and 235 lbs. I started out on a 2000 Yamaha Royal Star 1300 and I'm still enjoying the ride. I do want more CC's eventually, but I own the bike and not willing to make payments on anything at this time.
I've had one venture and a few royal stars over the years (ones that I was selling, not necessarily riding a lot). For a 1300, they pack a big punch. Lol. I always liked em, but stopped buying them only cause people stayed getting picky about wanting fuel injection over the carbs. And I hear ya for sure as far as not having the payments. Nothing like owning it outright. Thanks for checking the vid!
I have a 2010 Raider and I absolutely LOVE it. My only complaint is that it needs a 6 speed transmission, and a tach. At interstate speed it sounds like it is screaming.
Yeah, I was surprised they didn't have a 6 speed; although the 5 speed seems pretty well geared for what it is. The tach would definitely be nice as well.
Not for beginners get an S40 or Honda 750 or Kawasaki 650 but the Raider is a big hoss really and you really want to know how to ride that much power power big time right!!!
Hahaha...I hear ya. The raider is a big bike. The Stryker is pretty long too though. At the end of the day, both are a blast to ride. Thanks for checking the video!
Lol. No kidding. Your not the first to mention that. Here's a vid of one I had a while back with the cobra side swept exhaust. That might hit the spot. ua-cam.com/video/NUpa0KHhtH4/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!

@@JonsMotoGarage I was deciding between the Raider and the VTX, I ended up with the VTX because I got a better deal. I'm sure I would have enjoyed the Raider as well, but I love this VTX. Monster is right.
@@ncstang2322 Found a 2008 1800 vtx, 4000 miles, garage kept, like new, Kuriakin grips, pegs, mirrors, levers, saddlebags, 5500.00. THEN...a couple months later, found a 2013 Raider, 2000 miles, garage kept, like new, Yamaha backrest, 6300.00. Now I just rotate between the 2. Rode the Raider 200 miles today, sweet cruiser.
Yeah, the warrior is definitely more suited for that with the inverted front forks and rear swing arm. I miss when I could find warriors reasonably priced. Lol. Thanks for watching! Ride safe!
Having owned both a Yamaha Raider and a Kawasaki Mean Streak, I can say that the Kawa handled much better and had a better transmission. The Kawa shifted much quicker and smoother. I ported the heads, installed high compression pistons and a high flow intake and exhaust and a Power Commander to the Streak and then it was the best motorcycle I have ever owned. If Kawasaki had built the Mean Streak like that they would still be making them. Sold it a few years ago and still regret it.
Yeah, the meanstreak is more like the warrior. They're both performance cruisers with the inverted front forks. I know the warrior at least had the rest swing arm, similar to the r1. While the raider has a massive motor, it's definitely not built for hitting the canyons with the raked out front end. I really want to get my hands on another warrior. Been a while and now prices have gone up and they're hard to come by. Thanks for checking the vid!
I wanted a Warrior when they first came out but could not stand the air cleaner sticking into my leg, worse than a Harley, and I hate Harleys! Overpriced, underpowered with bad brakes. Oh yeah, the Mean Streak had absolutely fabulous brakes.
Agreed...I have owned m109r, Raider, and Meanstreak. All decent bikes, but Meanstreak most fun in corners, but lacked power, even with pipes and big air mod. Raider handled a close second, but with quite a bit more pull. The 109 had the pull, but liked to drag hard parts if you get too sport in the twisties. Raider best overall IMO. Have, since, sold the Raider to go back to a Hayabusa. I missed the power and handling haha. May try a VTX1800 or Rocket 3 sometime? Maybe a Diavel???
First off, thanks for watching and commenting. I'm no expert on the matter, but my two cents: I think belt is right up there with all the rest in terms of reliability, with the advantage of being a bit lower maintenance than chain. A lot of guys switch back to chain on the harleys if they're riding em real hard or doing wheelies because the belts snap apparently under those conditions. Ride safe!
I’ve got my eye on a 2008 Raider S. Cherry red with 25K miles and a dented gas tank. Owner wants $4900. In your opinion, how much would you counter due to miles and damage I’d have to repair?
Based on what I've seen, I wouldn't pay more than $3k-$3500. If you're patient (and maybe willing to travel a bit), you can find one with lower miles that doesnt need any major work for $4k-$5500.
Hecks yeah! Means a lot to hear that! For the most part, people seem to keep good vibes on in the commentary! Thanks for the support, my friend! Keep me posted on your search for the Raider!
I love my raider. Best bike I ever had. I definitely do not recommend this as your first bike. It has way too much power. You panic and cracked the gas you're done. Anybody that's never ridden before I suggest getting like a Honda XR 100 or 125 take it in the woods and learn how to ride. Then transition to a street bike
Well said! I didn't start on a dirt bike, but overwhelming consensus is that it's the best way. I can understand why that would be. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!
Personally, stratoliner experience idk if its the same engine or not but its also a 1900cc air cooled, no traffic problems but when I road the piss out of it, it would shut off in the driveway but no problems starting back up
I wanted a raider or a slightly modded stryker as a first bike due to what I could afford (been riding 1 season). Ended up with the stryker and couldnt be happier. Would have been way too tempted to go faster on the raider. Im also 5'8" myself and the stryker is plenty of bike to start
Yeah, I've ridden the stryker a few times - perfect balance for pretty much any rider. I really dig the 1300 engine they have in those and the vstar 1300. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!
You're totally right! I thought about that after the fact. I left out the breakout and honda vtx 1800 as well. I flipped an m109r a few years back. That thing was a complete beast! The Raider is very tame in comparison! I had a c109r about 6 mos back (also one that I sold). Same as the m109r, just on a cruiser platform. Way too much moto for me. Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love your Channel big fan. I'm glad you have a fury. I absolutely love my 2012 Honda Fury. But I am a little disappointed on the highway when I need a little more power to pass someone. Will I be disappointed with the Raider? Your opinion would be great thank you so much love your Channel keep up the good work👍🏻. Plus I did put an air intake Cobra exhaust and fuel control on my bike still not that happy. Will the Raiders do it for me🤔
First off, thanks a bunch for watching and commenting! It means a lot! It's funny you ask about the raider wheelie cause I've been wondering the same myself. I'm sure someone skilled enough could pull it off. I'm trying to sell mine so don't wanna find out the hard way. Lol. From my experience with the harley, I bet it'd be easiest standing up. I saw someone wheelie a stryker with a passenger on the back. I'm sure it can be done! Let me know if you pull it off. Lol. Ride safe!
@@humblewarriorus Dude, the liter bikes are monsters! I know why you mean. I had a cbr1000rr recently. Never tamed that beast with the wheelies. It was SCARY getting the wheelie up and hitting 80 without trying. Lol.

Shout out to another Sweden viewer! (I know at least one other dude is from there as well.) Yeah, I agree for most the raider is too much bike. I've got my eye on the rockets. Have you seen the new concept/redesign for the rocket? It looks pretty awesome! I've never ridden one, but hear good things. Thanks
My life:
Ride my raider on weekends.
Watch raider related videos on weekdays.
MY GOSH !!!! The Raider is the best hidden gem EVER of big bikes and it's a friggen' YAMAHA. Everything they make is top shelf.
You just convinced me to buy this 2010 I'm looking at, thanks my dude!
I just bought a 2015 Raider Bullet Cowl to replace my ‘99 CBR 600 ... best decision ever!!!
Have my raider for 10 years..still as fun today as the day i first bought it.....
They really are super fun bikes! Thanks for watching, and ride safe!
@@JonsMotoGarage bought the first raider in Ontario Canada in 2008 still riding my monster Larry t
Yep , still have my '08 . 48 mpg on average also :)
48 miles per gallon? I get 120 miles to the tank at 4.2 gallons.

Ride safe!
hp still building at red line?
I don't see how but you own one, I don't.
Prime example of how to start out on a big v-twin without killing yourself! Smoking deal btw! Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!

Ok so im not a new rider ive been riding a honda shadow 750 for 3 years now is moving to this too much bike
Nope. Just take it slow. It's a heavy bike with a lot of power but it handles really well for a cruiser. Don't jump on it and grab throttle. Just take some time to get used to it. It's my 1st cruiser and I love every second I ride it.
just one thing i wish i had on my raider is a 5 gallon tank!!i have to fuel up nearly as much as i did on my 2 gallon sportster///the huge engine does a little more than sip gas.other than that this bike is better than any hd ive owned and i got tired of paying for the name, excellent excellent bike yamaha killed it
Yeah, I always say that the raider is the best kept secret of motorcycles. Truly the most moto for the money!
Try a Gen 1 VMax, about 90 miles a tank! But I LOVE it
i had a 13 raider loved it one thing i hated every year the back tire needed replacing never did burn out just lots of torque and heavy bike thats about 5 to 6 thousand miles a year i live in northern new York hate to see if i lived down south, fun to ride, massive torque, comfortable im 6'1 290 pounds
The tank is small. How many miles did it last?
I would hate to stop at every gas station. Thank you.
I love the looks of the Raider! I have a 2005 Yamaha Warrior and have never been in love with the way it looks, I would MUCH MUCH rather have a Raider 👍
What do you think? Would you recommend the Yamaha Raider as a beginner bike?
absolutely.... not....
the power band is more manageable than a sport bike, but way to much weight for someone just starting to get the feel of things. I move through bikes quickly, but would not suggest something this size as a first bike at all.
rebels and shadows are good "starter" bikes, the shadow not being outgrown so quickly of the two. there are similar bikes with other companies that fall into the categories/style of those that would do well too.
I jumped to a 1800 within Id say 3 or 4 months of riding time, in ways I both regret and don't regret it at the same time. the 1800 was way to heavy (granted a couple hundred pounds more than the raider) but the jump in weight was a lot. but was the exact bike I wanted for all the riding I do (about 1,000-1.500 miles per month)
the 1100 I had bought as my second one would be great but the value of the bike limited how much I wanted to customize it to suite my style. and I still have it. so if you wanna add another one to your little collection ;)
(specially if its what you take your first road test on)
but I did enjoy the vid! and would easily recommend the raider as a second bike as I have test rode a friends and it was a really nice bike. keep the shiny side up!

Just picked up a 2009 Raider Raven for $3000 today! All it needs is a front tire. I am still dumbfounded. The thing absolutely rips!!!!
It has a 2-1 Vance and Hines exhaust, power commander 5, and a 240 rear tire conversion
Congrats on the new ride! That's an awesome deal!🏍🤙
I can't get over how gorgeous that thing is
Your reviews are always great
I had a 2008 in Tommy Blue.
Aprojeep and still, I would not advise to get this bike as the first one. I have the red 2008 and I freaking love it.
The Yamaha Raider is a damn nice bike ('17 Breakout owner)
Yeah, I think Yamaha really did a good job with it. Probably a bit ahead of its time, and they must not have done a good job marketing it. I've yet to ride a breakout, but hear they're complete monsters as well. I should've mentioned that as well. Thanks for checking the vid!
It’s a sweet bike. My buddy is getting one. Can’t wait to line up my Vegas with it
Hey Jon, I am 65 yrs. old and haven't ridden a bike in 2o yrs.
Ride safe!
At 61, about 6 months ago, picked up a 2008 Honda 1800 vtx, and a 2013 Raider. My vmax is jealous. Ride em all, and enjoy.
I’m not necessarily a beginner, but last I rode was 5 years ago and that, too was a 160 cc engine. Would this one be a too big of a bike for me?
Been riding for almost 2 years now and I currently have a Sportster 883 and I’m looking for something with a little more power that I can grow into and not out of. My biggest concern is reliability as all the raiders I’m finding have 15-20k miles on it. I heard as long as you have them serviced regularly I shouldn’t have any issues getting it up to 50k. Also I’m only 5’6” so I didn’t know if there are any other riders around this height who found that the Raider was a little too much of a stretch for them. I should be checking one out next week so I’ll be able to throw a leg over one!
I'm 5'4" 135 lbs and I own a Stryker. I have no troubles whatsoever on either the Stryker or the Raider due to my height or size.
@@albertogarcia6332 I forgot I even commented this, I ended up getting an 08 VRod and loved it but now I’m looking to sell it and get into a hyper naked bike, preferably an MT-10
I am starting on this type of motorcycle. I have a Yamaha 2001 Raider. Super cool.
How's the passing power on the highway john? Any down shifting needed? ..
Depends on the size of the rider.... 6’ +, and 200 pounds or bigger than it is doable for a 1st bike. Obviously common sense and caution will be needed. But it’s a possible first bike.
Couldn't have said it better myself. The size of the rider and common sense are key! Lol. Thanks for checking the vid, brother!
@ Jayson Leavelle. I agree. Had a friend start out on a VTX 1800 as a first bike. Couple days practice in an empty parking lot and he was good to go.
Yeah, I just talked to a dude the other day who started on a vtx 1800 and is still here to tell the tail. Lol. He was looking at the raider actually.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend for a beginner either. I really dig the metallic red! The metal flake looks awesome!

What bikes are close to the Yamaha Raider? The Harley Fat Boy, and Breakout. Honda Fury.
As far as the chopper look: fury, break out, wide glide, stryker. In terms of shear power: yamaha road star warrior, Honda vtx 1800, suzuki m109r, victory hammer. Those are what come to mind. But it's hard to find something that really compares across the board.
@@JonsMotoGarage Agreed. All those bikes are comparable to the Raider.
Yeah, lots of good options.

Hey, I'm looking for a beginner bike and went to all the shops nearby and could not find anything that fit me. Thanks
IS that a Radial VTwin or an Offset Vtwin? I know it's pushrod operated, and they made a 113ci version for their eluder, but I can't see if its an offset design or not.
Great question! I don't know to be honest. I'll have to do some research when I get a chance. Thanks for checking out the vid!
1900cc IS 113ci.
@@BullHammer-jt3fp No it's not. 116ci is 1900cc.
They round up. It’s 1851cc rounded up to 1900cc like most manufacturers do.
That Kawasaki Mean Streak looks as if it might be a good bike" but the Yamaha Raider is smoothly powerful , I mean its no Vmax but it will hold its own.
It is. The Mean Streak is a better handling bike, if you like to carve.
Could someone 5'4"/5'5" ride this bike with ease or are the foot pedals too far?

@@jlsfishing6993 just bought 1 yesterday. Dirtbike guy years ago. 6'2, 270 lbs. I needed something comfy.
I've come close to buying this bike a couple of times but always ended up with something else. But I do think it's a great bike. It's definitely the cream of the crop of all the bikes you mentioned, with the exception maybe of the VTX 1800, and equally good bike.
Yeah, so many options makes it a tough choice. Half the time it comes down to what happens to be the best deal on the market at the time.
I'll have to take it out for another spin. What I've yet to see, and would be very impressed by, would be a raider wheelie. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Just wondering...I've owned a Vmax 1200, Vstar 1100 and Intruder 800 (plus numerous other bikes in smaller cc). Am I ready for a Raider?? 🤔
From what I've heard (I've yet to get a vmax myself), if you can handle the vmax monster, the raider should be no problem.

A buddy of mine has one with an aftermarket exhaust. It's so loud nobody can ride within a 100 metres of him. He's deaf as a post and turns off his hearing aids while riding.
Hahaha...yeah, that's almost as crazy ad the dudes who start on busas or liter bikes. But at least you're still alive to tell the tail. Lol.

Raider replaced warrior. I have a 07 warrior with a power commander and big air kit. And IMO it is more torquey than a raider 🤐.

For me, the shadow vlx 600 was too much bike ad a starter. I would've killed myself on the raider, no doubt about it. Lol.
I went with the Stryker after trying to make a U turn on the Raider.

Those were the glory days when you could have your pick at some monster performance cruisers.
Maybe a Diavel???
what's the reliability far as belt drive ? Old school kinda stuck on chain and shafty.
Ride safe!
My uncle has a belt drive on his road king, he bought new in ‘03 165,000 miles later, still the same belt he left the factory with.
