You've gotten the recent continuity a wee bit backwards around 10:47. Khonshu didn't enter Marcs mind in order to weaken him and thus gave him multiple personalities. Marc already had DID from childhood, which is what allowed/encouraged Khonnshu to enter his mind when he was killed in Egypt. Kohnshu counted on Marc's mind being fractured and weak to make it easier to control him. It worked for a long time until Marc's Alters made peace with each other, forcing Big K to take a backseat.
I really like the lack of MCU connections (FOR NOW) it allows us to focus on one character or more accurately 3 or 4 depending on whether jake Lockley shows up.
I agree. MCU fans are mad, but the General Public is happy. This is completely anecdotal but a handful of my coworkers do not enjoy the MCU, they find it either too silly or too convoluted (which I will concede on the latter, e.g. if they jumped into Infinity War without watching at least like five movies it would be an awfully confusing movie). However: they're willing to watch Moon Knight because not only is it standalone, but it's far darker and much more "grown up" than the rest of the MCU content.
@@versewonderstrikes5353 To reduce the plot to that would directly recycle back to their first complaint: that's an incredibly childish and silly premise when it's distilled to it's essence. "Magic stones go brr" for three hours is not an entertaining plot to most people lmao. So yes you're correct, but that only further validates their distaste.
Two things: 1) the scarab in ancient myths represented immortality/resurrection 2) Horus (Hru) was also known as an avenger since he "avenged" his father's, Osirius, death by Set (Horus' uncle). So since Khonshu is associated with Horus and going by that AKA, Moon Knight fits as a warrior for Khonshu. Fun fact: Hru was also ALSO known as the god of war (shout out to Kratos) Bonus: Khonshu is also the god of time (sometimes called Chron, which we associate with Chronos, the greek god of time and one of the greatest game of all time Chrono Trigger) so that also goes with the passages of time Steven experiences Like Steven, I'm a fan of Ancient Egyptian Mythology haha
The first time Steven hears his alter's name was not on the phone with Layla but when he woke up in Germany and Khonshu said to "give the body back to Mark".
The show’s depiction of D.I.D although a bit exaggerated, is incredibly accurate and very relatable so far. This comes from someone who has the disorder. Cant wait to see more!
@@uvindukulathunga3860 They added DID to sound fancy nothing more . Just look at Hulk he got his superpower from gamma radiation but in real life it will give u terrible death. It all just to sound interesting nothing to do with common sense.
This was incredible. First of all, because I have zero knowledge about the character in the comics, I had zero expectations. That really kept my mind open. The acting was amazing!! And the way they portrayed Steven's blackouts was phenomenal.
@@Zack-hb4eh I don’t think Denzy Canty meant that in a negative way. Understandably there has been criticism on how plenty of the MCU movies feeling similar to one another. There has been a couple here in the first episode of Moon Knight, but those gets outweigh by the tension the first episode brought, it’s very refreshing.
Oscar Isaac continues to prove that he is a national treasure!! His acting is always phenomenal. Love this show already especially the part when the Mark Spector persona takes over Steven and becomes Moon Knight. So fucking badass🔥🔥
Well Khonshu's voice in Steven's mind reminded me of Venom talking to Eddie. Also somehow there's a tiny similarity how both have their superhero transformation, like Venom overtaking Eddie and Moonlight taking over Steven also both mention word PARASITE. Lol 😎
I've been super excited for this show for a long time, and the first episode DID NOT DISAPPOINT! And, since you asked, Ryan, I think the Moon Knight costume just might be my favourite in the MCU so far!
Interesting reaction to the broom salesperson in front of his apartment. In some cultures people will place an upside down broom near the door to repel unwanted guests or spirits
Theory on Steven's mother: Ammit is referred to as a female deity, depicted with a crocodile head. At the end of each of his voicemails to his mother, Steven ends with "laters gators." He may have both gods raging within him with Ammit holding sway over Steven while Marc is aligned with Khonshu.
Editor: "We need to give him a side kick, maybe someone he met in Europe?" Comic Book writers in the 70s: "What about a French guy, we'll call him Frenchie...Frenchie DuChamp. That name sounds normal, right?"
@@andrewshandle hey! My father's name is Jack "USA" Smith. He had to change it from Sydney "Pastrami on Rye" Goldstein when he fled to the states from Germany during WW2.
I love how it's based in London and even if Oscar's accent isn't perfect (there are definitely people in London and Essex that sound like him though) he really gets how Londoners talk with their phrases and slang.
You missed one, though it was very subtle. When he is in the museum with the lights out he walks by a statue or bust with half of a face missing. Steven then turns around and briefly his face lines up with the missing piece of the statue's head.
When I saw the broken glass in the shoes scene, I immediately thought of Penance. Both the character and the action. I relate to the character of Moonknight far too well, to the point it’s hard to read his comics. Kind of like how my brother doesn’t like watching movies or shows that deal with war or mass killings (like the show Punisher)… after he got out of the U.S. military (he’s now a citizen of Australia).
I was thinking about that too. Like maybe he has to constantly pay for the sins he's committed or is yet to commit in order to serve Ammit without dying.
The glass thing is NOT a reference to Jewish faith. Harrow is an expert in the field of pain. It's about pain. The guy in this video doesn't know what he is talking about
@@bgrosland1986 I agree, it has Nothing to do with the Jewish faith. Wasn’t sure how the Jewish faith connected to Egyptian gods unless he somehow connected it to Moses (even though he was Hebrew… and I personally believe there’s a difference between Jews and Hebrews. I loved this 1st episode and this show so far and really enjoy F. Murray Abraham as Khonshu. Ethan Hawke as Authur Harrow feels terrifying which I enjoy with the tone of the series. Plus Oscar Isaac is casted perfectly casted as Moon Knight
I suffer from BPD the slightly more aggressive version of DID, this show is so close to my heart now (def heavier than a feather lol) I loooooooved it.
I have a feeling it was actually Jake lockley that got the date with his co worker, just because Marc doesn’t seem like the type to waste his time for a date
@@jacmenz4113 thats what i was thinking. steven is the playboy and jake is the taxi man (or the street level chameleon- street level museum vendor in this case). so not that it matters but they couldve swapped those roles for whatever reason. Moon knight comics are so full of retcons and changes anyway so i doubt anyone will mind
You didn't highlight how all the reflections in the bathroom infinity sequence retreat, leaving only the three aspects and Steven. All three say something to Steven but the main conversation with the one on his left, which I assume is Mark. What is interesting is that the one on the right was not holding his arm like Steven, the reflection behind Steven and Mark were. This may suggest that there is another, more separate, identity yet to come to the fore (or it could just be editing but there are three faces of Oscar Isaac in the end credits - Steven, Mark and ?). All the reflections return when Steven cedes control to Mark, suggesting unity. Another note; assuming that the bathroom scene is the day subsequent to his missed date on Sunday, Moon Knight makes his appearance on Monday which has it's etymological origin of diēs Lūnae (Latin) meaning "Day of the Moon". As a side note, what kind of Museum has a back-room bathroom with 12 basins, tiled walls, polished metal paper-towel dispensers and gold-neon lit mirrors on three walls? The only entrance was through a service corridor so the museum must have a lot of staff and really, really like them... The Scarab is likely a key to the "tomb" of Ammit (it's wings are popped out in the bloody aftermath scene in the village and in the end credits). What was the city in the reflection of London in the end Credits? I wonder if the imagery of the Moon in the end credits will change from a Waxing Crescent Moon to a Full Moon by the final episode?
OH MY GOD!!! FINALLYYY! This is literally the only time I have come across someone who also noticed that in the bathroom scene there were indeed 3 reflections. I searched everywhere to see if someone had talked about how we saw Jake in ep1 itself but I have found nothing so far lol
Thank you for a great break down of the episode. Moonknight has been one of my favorites since High School. I always thought he was too complicated of a character to make it to the big screen or small screen. But, with video breakdowns like yours I have places to send people who are curious and want some stuff explained.
I feel like the personality that set up the date with the woman had to be Jake Lockley because it wouldn't make sense for Mark to do something like that.
I like how the show doesn't feel like it belongs in the MCU, so it doesn't fall into that generic superhero feel that almost all MCU properties have now. I hope they start doing stand-alone feeling projects that still interact with the MCU but do their own thing. Think like having movies exactly like the old Blade movies but it does take place in the MCU.
@@RK-lq2udit was still quite different, like the series wasn't about bad vs good. It was more about fighting your inner demons, dealing with past trauma. We see themes like these very less

17:22 I like to believe that the scale don't work because Ammit's scale only work for humans, but since Khonsu is in Steven's mind and is Steven at the some point, so it doesn't work on gods.
The name of the episode " the goldfish problem " I was thinking maybe that's a nod to how Steven doesn't remember anything from his mark adventures. Goldfish have an infamously short memory span.
Ammit is basically the epipcian version of cerberus for the egipician version of Hades, Annubis, i wonder how much of both myths were based on each other since greeks and egipicians met multiple times in history
Not an Easter Egg but a mistake rather; In the car chase scene you can see a little badge or marker on the bottom right side of the windshield of the truck and maybe the BMW, too. These cars have German plates in the episode. Yet, German cars do not have that sign, Hungarian cars do. So, you can tell that that scene was filmed in Hungary.
8:40 - Scarabs represent many things in Egyptian mythology. An important one is Khepri, the morning aspect of Ra, the sun god. He was a scarab (a dung beetle), and every morning he rolled the sun across the sky. He represented renewal and new beginnings. 17:45 - It’s a stuffed crocodile, and Sobek is a crocodile god. You keep mentioning alligators, but there are no alligators in Egypt. Only crocodiles. 17:55 - Khonshu is not an aspect of Horus. Khonshu gifted Horus an eye made of moonlight after Set tore one of his out. Khonshu is also the god of time, which makes it ironic for Steven to keep losing time when Marc takes over. Especially since there is the myth of Nut gambling Khonshu for more time to have her children.
Ever since i first started watching your analysis and easter egg videos, you are the only channel I watch as I believe your channel is the most reliable source imo. Plus I love that you discourage leaks to upcoming movies. I love watching your videos as I have 0% background to comics. Keep it up in making amazing vidoes. In 6:07 , this was Steve’s reply to the little girls’question “ And did it suck for you? Getting rejected from the Fields of Reeds?”. I wonder if this was just an honest question from her, or was she implying that Steve has already died?.🤔🤔🤔 Watching your videos has made me try to read between every line of every video I watch. 🤣🤣🤣
Fun Fact: The artwork at 10:06 is from a MTG(Magic the gathering cardgame) playingcard, which is based or lean onto egyptian mythology called amonkhet.
There are tombs in the pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Giza has at least two, the Queens Chamber and the Kings Chamber. The Kings Chamber has the remnants of a sarcophagus. They were both robbed long ago. Different Pharaoh's and Egyptian rulers are buried in the Valley of the Kings. There is a huge breadth of history that encompasses Egypt and the pyramids are just a small part.
I think it is interesting that this is one of the first times to have the hero have split personalities, since the most famous ones (like Gollum, and the Green Goblin) were villains.
I'm sorry but I'm still a firm believer in the idea that anime is an art style not a cultural based thing. Avatar is still an anime despite being made in America and its not even the first.
At this point I think Ryan is in every writing room. There's no way he knows all this. I am an avid comic book reader and I still get surprised by the shows /movies that come out. Bravo Ryan 👏🏿
I had a weird thought when I saw the bullet hole in the glass. It made me think of the shattered glass effect for the multiverse, and I thought to myself what if the different personalities were all multiverse versions of the same person. So in one universe that guy was Marc Spector, but in another he was Steven Grant, and so on, but now they're all trying to exist in the same person in the same universe.
I would be astonished if it were meant to be anything more than a bullet shot through some glass. I would consider it a stretch to assume it meant anything else.
he describe mummification to a kid and gets it wrong the organs were removed through an incision in the side the brain was removed through the nose but the Egyptians believed it was an unimportant organ the other organs were preserved the brain wasn't. Sorry close but no cigar the pharaoh that Moon Knight tangles with in the comic is Rama-Tut who is a Kang which I suppose connects it with the Loki series plus in the comics Khonshu is the god of time. The phone is not the first time he's heard the name Mark, when he wakes up in Germany Khonshu say to surrender the body to Mark. The crocodile didn't move it was the werejackal moving behind the crocodile. You missed another multi personality symbol he walks behind a statue with half a head there is one shot where you can only see half his face the rest is obscured by the statues half head giving him in effect two faces. In the comics Moon Knight chases Kang across time and space to recover 4 artefacts that make up Khonshu's staff
i'm not really a fan of moon knight in the comics as i find that the character is lacking consistency, a interesting rogues gallery and proper identity to build new versions around, feel like it is the type of problem that leads to people falling in love with one depiction of the character only for the next edition to change to much from the last version that you end up losing interest or just get over all disappointed sooner or later as you no longer recognize the character anymore, but i will still give the show a chans, think it might be what the character needs to finally get a foundation to build him up better in the future, and from what i seen in this first episode i think it might be giving moon knight just what he needs as a character.
Hes the sort of character that has one strong gimmick. Is konshu real or a delusion? Once that question is answered there isnt much more to the character. But he looks cool and people like him so he gets put in stories with other characters until he gets shelved for a while only for the character to get a reboot title that may or may not answer the question of konshu differently than it was answered previously. Rinse. Repeat. 40 years later make a show with the same formula. This sounds like much more of a complaint than i mean it to be. Im a fan of the character. Its just no one really seems to know where to take the character after tackling the konshu question.
7:42, not a statue that's an actual person why would you leave a tip for a statue 8:32, he didn't get knocked out he jumped out the window those guys were shooting out of. The impact woke up Steven

It's amazing what Issac can do with a great character and a decent script
Star Wars feels attacked lol. I felt so bad for Oscar seeing him so defeated and completely over the ROS in interviews.
How about when he played Ivan Ooze in X-Men Apocalypse?
That was even worse.
@@the503creepout7 eh. I and some others still enjoyed it
You've gotten the recent continuity a wee bit backwards around 10:47.
We all knew Oscar Issac was going to kill it. Loved the cinematography. I can’t wait for more!
Nah I'm still really upset they cast him. I really wanted Shia Labeouf to play Moon Knight
I really like the lack of MCU connections (FOR NOW) it allows us to focus on one character or more accurately 3 or 4 depending on whether jake Lockley shows up.
Bingo
I find it interesting that harrow didn’t even mention the blip though… what if that’s the “future of humanity” he’s talking about?🤔
@@rileyhughes5613 Was finding magical stones that original or difficult to follow tho?
@@versewonderstrikes5353 To reduce the plot to that would directly recycle back to their first complaint: that's an incredibly childish and silly premise when it's distilled to it's essence. "Magic stones go brr" for three hours is not an entertaining plot to most people lmao.
So yes you're correct, but that only further validates their distaste.
Two things:
1) the scarab in ancient myths represented immortality/resurrection
2) Horus (Hru) was also known as an avenger since he "avenged" his father's, Osirius, death by Set (Horus' uncle). So since Khonshu is associated with Horus and going by that AKA, Moon Knight fits as a warrior for Khonshu. Fun fact: Hru was also ALSO known as the god of war (shout out to Kratos)
Bonus: Khonshu is also the god of time (sometimes called Chron, which we associate with Chronos, the greek god of time and one of the greatest game of all time Chrono Trigger) so that also goes with the passages of time Steven experiences
Like Steven, I'm a fan of Ancient Egyptian Mythology haha
Ra!!! Ra!!! Ra!!! The sun/son god???
The first time Steven hears his alter's name was not on the phone with Layla but when he woke up in Germany and Khonshu said to "give the body back to Mark".
Can’t believe it’s just been 10 months since Moon Knight, can’t wait for Season 2 !
The show’s depiction of D.I.D although a bit exaggerated, is incredibly accurate and very relatable so far. This comes from someone who has the disorder. Cant wait to see more!

This was incredible. First of all, because I have zero knowledge about the character in the comics, I had zero expectations. That really kept my mind open.
The acting was amazing!!
And the way they portrayed Steven's blackouts was phenomenal.

Such a great episode! Felt nothing like the MCU, & I think that's fantastic!
U don't like the MCU?
I didn't get that feeling
I knew I'm gonna love this
@@Zack-hb4eh I don’t think Denzy Canty meant that in a negative way. Understandably there has been criticism on how plenty of the MCU movies feeling similar to one another. There has been a couple here in the first episode of Moon Knight, but those gets outweigh by the tension the first episode brought, it’s very refreshing.
Give it time. Wandavision didn't feel like MCU at all until they went with the whole cgi magic blasty fight scene at the end.
There is a QR code on the wall when he is talking to the girl who put gum in the pyramid. It links to a digital version of Werewolf by Night 32.
Lol 😎
I never watched this channel until The Eternals movie, been hooked ever since.
Ah, that sounds really interesting!

I thought of I think it's called self flagellation like Paul Bettany in Da Vinci Code. Obviously to a lesser degree, but the idea is the same.
Also I think Marc is married

This kind of tracks, especially because it was Jake in the comics that fathered a child with Marc’s girlfriend and hid it from him for years.

I think the reason he asked for a Steak was a "F*ck it" or "I've had enough" moment and just wants to eat

Thank you for a great break down of the episode. Moonknight has been one of my favorites since High School. I always thought he was too complicated of a character to make it to the big screen or small screen. But, with video breakdowns like yours I have places to send people who are curious and want some stuff explained.
I wonder if Marc put the scabbard in the fish tank lol . The fish probably died because he wasn't fed since Thursday :p . Dang it Marc
This is the best episode of Marvel TV since Daredevil season 1
I feel like the personality that set up the date with the woman had to be Jake Lockley because it wouldn't make sense for Mark to do something like that.
So Steven the lonely loser, Mark the bad ass mercenary fighter and Jake is the funny smooth player guy.
That scene was so freaking sad, he played that so well, I honestly don’t think I can rewatch bc of it, like, I don’t wanna cry too
I swear @screencrush has the best reviews on Marvel projects.
I like how the show doesn't feel like it belongs in the MCU, so it doesn't fall into that generic superhero feel that almost all MCU properties have now. I hope they start doing stand-alone feeling projects that still interact with the MCU but do their own thing. Hot fire!
I loved the "in medias res" feeling of this episode. It's so different for a superhero story.
Finally someone who's sound works
17:22 I like to believe that the scale don't work because Ammit's scale only work for humans, but since Khonsu is in Steven's mind and is Steven at the some point, so it doesn't work on gods.
The name of the episode " the goldfish problem " I was thinking maybe that's a nod to how Steven doesn't remember anything from his mark adventures. Goldfish have an infamously short memory span.
Remember that Anubis is supposed to be the sole judge of the underworld, making Arthur's use of Ammit's power to judge people a blasphemous act
Ammit is basically the epipcian version of cerberus for the egipician version of Hades, Annubis, i wonder how much of both myths were based on each other since greeks and egipicians met multiple times in history
I like that you talk at a quick pace. I never have to up the playback speed.

WHY DOES A CROCIDILE ALWAYS HAVE A SMILE??? EVERYTHING IS IN JEST/INGEST WITH IT!!!

Ryan just FYI no tombs have been found in the pyramids, the Pharoahs were actually buried in the valley of the kings.

That’s a great question
I noticed that too but thought it was more of a nod to Mark's/Steven's split (or "cracked") personalities
They nailed the essence of what is like to live with this condition. It was amazing

Or it's just a hole from where a bullet was shot through some glass
I would be astonished if it were meant to be anything more than a bullet shot through some glass. I would consider it a stretch to assume it meant anything else.
I love that this show is set in London. It's so surreal seeing such familiar every day environments in the MCU. I'm so used to seeing only America.

Sorry close but no cigar the pharaoh that Moon Knight tangles with in the comic is Rama-Tut who is a Kang which I suppose connects it with the Loki series plus in the comics Khonshu is the god of time.

The crocodile didn't move it was the werejackal moving behind the crocodile.
You missed another multi personality symbol he walks behind a statue with half a head there is one shot where you can only see half his face the rest is obscured by the statues half head giving him in effect two faces.
In the comics Moon Knight chases Kang across time and space to recover 4 artefacts that make up Khonshu's staff
the daily vids really make my day, the mom jokes get me every time
i'm not really a fan of moon knight in the comics as i find that the character is lacking consistency, a interesting rogues gallery and proper identity to build new versions around, feel like it is the type of problem that leads to people falling in love with one depiction of the character only for the next edition to change to much from the last version that you end up losing interest or just get over all disappointed sooner or later as you no longer recognize the character anymore, but i will still give the show a chans, think it might be what the character needs to finally get a foundation to build him up better in the future, and from what i seen in this first episode i think it might be giving moon knight just what he needs as a character.
Great point outs and explanations by the way. A lot of things other analysts didn’t point out/explain. Great work 👍🏼
