  • Learn about the five best free photo editing software that you can install on your PC. We start with an app that comes for free with Windows, the Photos app. As long as you already have Windows, there's no need to install any additional software. The Photos app offers all the most common editing functionality, like adjusting exposure, sharpness, and removing redeye. Next, we look at one of the most popular photo editing apps called IrfanView. This app allows you to rotate, flip, add text, add effects, and more to your pictures. You can even configure slideshows and bulk convert your photos to another file format. Next up, we look at Adobe Photoshop Express. Similar to the Windows Photos app, you can make all of the most common edits to your photographs. The last three apps we look at, including darktable, Raw Therapee, and Gimp, offer the most control to edit every aspect of your photos. You can make changes to raw images and then apply those edits to all your other photos. Edits are non-destructive, meaning you can undo the various changes you make to get the photo to look just how you want it.

I've been using Windows Photo App for years and use it all the time to crop etc my football / Soccer pics I do for Local Clubs. I don't want to do too much editing so I find this app great but the other week I went over to Windows 11 and the app was awful so I went back to Windows 10 now I'm happy again.
Thanks for this video Cheers Quinny

I really like Irfanview for viewing photos and making quick changes. I'll take a closer look at the programs that you have reviewed to see if I can select one that is easy to use with a reasonable amount of features. I rarely use a photo editor and I'm quite sure that I would not use an editing program that has too much complexity. Thank you for the video!

Thank you Kevin for your summary of the best free photo editing software around. Your advice and info is always timely and accurate.
I wonder if you’d thought of looking at free AI software as an addition to editing possibilities as, whilst far from perfect, this seems, at times, to have transformational powers beyond belief such as in enhancing old photographs?

Sweet video. Which of these can do perspective correction, which is one of my most often needed capabilities? You know, converging trees or building edges because of lens point-of-view.
PS: I have Gimp, but frankly, I have not really used it much. Since I use photo editing software only occasionally, I find I have to wade back into all the complexities of GIMP, just to do one thing to one photo. A long ago software reviewer used to call this the "coefficient of re-learnability." (Learn to use a new program, don't use it for a month, then try to use it again.) Some programs are a snap; many are a no-joy pain in the cookies.

Windows has now "updated" its Photo Editor program, but it is just not as good as the older version such as the one you have shown in this video. The one you have listed here has a button called "Enhance your photo" while the new one has a button called "Auto Enhance". The old one functions a lot better in terms of its effects. How can we reinstall the old Photo Editor? Or, if we cannot reinstall it, how can we use the new version to produce the same effect as the old "Enhance your photo"? Thx.

Can one of these free tools offer this last feature , i.e. content-aware resizing, where a certain part of the picture can be locked down, while unlocked parts can be widened for example? Thank you in advance for your replies.

  • @mortarmopp3919

Back in the 90s, I used IrfanView and even back then it was an awesome viewer, but not great editor. When the Windows version of GIMP came out, I gave that a try and have been using it ever since.
I was rather surprised that GIMP didn't make your top five, despite claiming it's one of your favorites. It's certainly the most flexible of the bunch. Also, you should be careful about qualifying how difficult a program is to learn. It's all relative. I for one would find learning Darktable and Raw Tharapee fairly easy to learn, probably because I'm familiar with Lighttable.

When I buy something, I want a product in my hands that can move from computer to computer and do not mind paying for it. I am a very beginner in photography so don’t need something like photoshop where not only do you subscribe but also pay for plug ins. Will take a look at those you suggested and it always helps if they have documentation or tutorials.

a great way to find freeware for lots of things is to just use your search engine of choice (I like duckduckgo but lots will use Google) and search for "free software". If you want a specific topic such as "for digital image editing" just add that to the first part. You don't need the quotes.

@@deborahfairburn6585 ok a couple of suggestions. You can use the Windows Firewall and try using Window anti virus that comes with W10. The latter is not my preference as there are others. Currently freeware BitDefender is good. Add Malwarebytes. It comes as freeware but is more robust with the paid version. I would also suggest viewing on YT anything present by Leo of the PC Security Channel. Learn everything you can and be careful of what might come to your inbox and look carefully at websites that you don't know before you go exploring too much. While I have not been in PC Tech in Paltalk for sometime, in the past this group was a good one to learn more about computer information and they have a good website available also. Keep your system updated, clean things up and make sure you BU BU BU and I mean that literally. There are many good newsletters to subscribe to such as Ask Leo, Ghacks, Gizmo, Bob Rankin, Dave's Computer Tips. HTH YMMV
