How to Update Your DSLR Firmware (i.e. Nikon D3400)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2017
- Manufactures release firmware updates to fix various issues and provide enhancements to given products. Nikon recently released a firmware update to the D3400 which is intended to address SnapBridge connectivity issues. Regardless of your camera's make/model, take a moment to see if an updated firmware exists.
Updating firmware is doable but be careful not to interrupt the update for any reason (i.e. do not power the camera off, ensure you have strong battery, etc.).

You are one of the only persons on youtube who makes usefull videos for cameras like the D3400 or D3500
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help/inspiration!:)
Yes he is thr best...
I went back here coz my snapbridge warned me there is a new one...
oh man... I'm from india, and your teachings are like explaining to a kid, so everybody can understand it clearly. You can become a teacher (professor) too😀😄 and🖒for you
Thanks for the post/feedback Vignesh!:) Welcome to the channel and glad to be of help!:) I just started an Instagram account with only a handful of picts but will add more soon. Feel free to follow me at instagram.com/realworldpicts
Completely agree with you, your videos are educative and step by step. Thanks a lot for this
His videos are very helpful
I was having problems updating until I viewed your tutorial. You made it clear that the opened BIN files were copied separately onto the SDX card. I did both the C:Ver.1.13 and Ver.2.017 updates easily. Excellent - Thank you.
Snap Bridge was telling me I needed to update my firmware and this was very helpful to do it with confidence. Mine was going from C1.12 to 1.13 and LD 2.017 to 2.08 worked just like your video.
I bought this camera a few weeks ago and started subscribing to your channel. Your tutorial on the D3400 firmware upgrade was simple to follow and very informative. Thank you
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Hello.
I have said this before, but you make some of the best how to videos on UA-cam, Clear and easy to listen to and no annoying music, and well planned. I will check my Nikon D5500 and see if this is some firmware for me!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Curious to know if your D5500 is in need of new firmware. I had someone tell me they received a revamped menu on their D3300 (upgrading from old firmware):).
Awesome! With your advice, I decided to buy the D3400 and it came in today. Thank God. I just updated it. From the software section on the page you linked to I downloaded the NEF Codec which now lets me preview the raw files in my Windows photo viewer. Thanks a lot for all your help. Your content is really helpful. I appreciate it all. :)
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Enjoy the D3400 ... a solid/capable camera!:)
Thank you for being so clear and concise in your explanations I appreciate that.
hi, I have watched your videos for over a year and I like your videos a lot, hope you continue and enjoy what you're doing!
thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
My wife bought me a Nikon D3400 for Christmas last year. Your videos have been very helpful. Thank you! I live in Italy currently so there are plenty of photo ops. Thanks again. Ciao
Thanks for the post/feedback and welcome from United States!:) Glad to be of help. Take some photos and post back a link - I suspect you have some great landscapes!:)
best place for photos.
Thank you for the detailed instructions plus you are an excellent well researched teacher.
Thanks for the post/feedback Terry and glad to be of help!:)
What a lovely man you are! :) thank you for being so good at what you do, you're a real blessing to UA-cam and the world. God bless you Sir, Matthew.
Good evening. I decided not to go with the 3400 but I just bought the 7200. Looking forward for better weather to see your new tutorials as well as what I have learnt this year. Thanks for all your help
Glad to be of help Lauren:). The D7200 is a solid camera and should treat you well!:)
Nikon needs to give this man a job.!! 👍🏼😃
Sir, please continue your videos with the D3400 its very helpful. A lot of people love it too :))
Fantastic video - You have a wonderful gift of presenting technical data in a very straight-forward and easily understood manner. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the post/feedback Michael:).
Your videos have been very helpful with my understanding of the functions and abilities of my new D3400 and have given me the confidence to put it to work. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:)
Each time I update my firmware, I watch this video first
Can't thank you enough fir making this ☺
Thanks for the post Colin and glad to be of help!:) I do the same as well - bookmarking various go-to videos for quick reference:).
Step-by-Step guidance, love how you carefully explained everything,
Thanks for the tutorial! Now to check for firmware upgrades for my other equipment!
Glad to be of help!:)
Just finished my updates and your video made it easy to follow along and do it on my own, thanks again.
Glad to be of help!:)
Thank you. Will try this since snapbridge doesnt connect to my camera. Pretty straightforward and very good instructions. Your voice is clear and very easy to understand. You should go read the news on tv! :)
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Did your Snapbridge work after this? I tried it and my snapbridge still doesn't connect
Great video. Note that it is vital to fully charge the camera battery before updating the firmware- the camera could be ruined if it lost piwer halfway through the update.
Thanks for the post/feedback and great point!:) Ensure no interruptions during the upgrade.
Very helpful. My D3400 thankfully came with everything fully updated, but my D3100 is a bit behind so at least now I know how to update it.
Glad to be of help!:)
BRILLIANT! I got this camera when it first came out and it's like an extension of my arm so when it stoped syncing with my phone I could've sworn I'd updated it once but definitely not!! Thank you so much!!
glad to be of help!:)
Just got my D3400. The LD setting is now 2.017 and it now works great
Glad to be of help!:)
This was super helpful, thank you!!
Thanks Sir, for an excellent video. Thankfully Nikon supplied my D3400 with all the latest updates installed. Wish Microsoft did likewise
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Nice to hear/see as well (a sign Nikon is on top of the situation). LOL re Microsoft and agreed!:)
Thanks for this walk through. Make sure the battery is full when updating. My Camera wouldn't let me update until i charged my battery. Makes sense.
Glad to be of help Derrick:). Ahhhh yes, a built-in safety feature. If the camera powers off for whatever reason during a firmware update, your camera could go bad for good.
Excellent video, clear instructions and you went at an easy to follow pace. Thanks dude
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
I didn't need it for snap bride but it was very insightful for the firmware update on my D3300 thank you. 👍🏻
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:)
Wow another great video, I had problems with Snapbridge and its connection to phone via Bluetooth. After this update, issue is now resolved. Thanks! Looking forward to your next video....
Great to hear and thanks for the feedback!:)
Updates still coming out. Keep checking! Thanks for the video! P
Agreed and glad to be of help!:)
I updated firmware in the past but in the end it's always good to have a "make sure I don't brick" instructions.
I never bricked a device when I seen other people do successful firmware upgrades and I follow along. but I have seen others brick their devices by doing it so... so wrong.
A word of warning for all devices, make sure they are either plugged in, or a fully charged and healthy battery is used for the firmware upgrades because this is the number 1 reason why devices are bricked.
Good point and worth emphasizing:).
Right on Brother. Followed your ways and presto it all works smoothly as intended. Thank you!
Glad to be of help!:)
Thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos.
Thanks for the post David and glad to be of help!:)
This was extremely helpful! So glad I came across this video
awesome and glad to be of help!:)
Thank you for this video. Just wanted to drop in and say there is a January 2020 update for distortion control for the D3400 v2.018. **MUST REMOVE LENS** before updating distortion control per Nikon's d/l site.
Thanks for the post/update!:)
Thank you for posting this. My SnapBridge was not working and thanks to your video, it now is.
Glad to be of help!:) Nikon had a few issues but a new firmware did the trick:).
It was quite useful and I will check for my camera.
Thanks!
Love the simple, straight forward presentation.
Excellent video. It was a great help. I was able to upgrade the new updates on my Nikon camera. The Snapbridge works a lot better. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Thank you definitely more confident in apply firmware updates, great step by step instructions :)
Thanks for the post Jane and glad to be of help!:) Check for newer firmware once or twice a year to ensure your camera has the latest updates, etc.
wow thank you So much. I've learned a lot by just watching your video
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Big thumbs up from me. You answered all my questions on how to do a firmware upgrade. Nikon should be paying you for this, or at least giving you some free stuff. Many thanks.
Thanks for the feedback Ian and glad to be of help!:)
Awesome video. Truely a very helpful video.
Great stuff, RealWord. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
you are the best photography teacher in the world...i celebrate you
Thanks for the post/feedback Raymond and glad to be of help!:)
Thanks for this video!! I'm not very versed with computers but this made it very easy for me to make the necessary updates to my camera.
Thanks for the post/feedback Bryan and glad to be of help!:)
I did the firmware updates right after I got my new D3400 out of the box. Since you had the "old" firmware and used it for a while, did you notice any considerable change in the camera functions (apart from SnapBridge )? You should also recommend that the battery should be fully charged.
Another super helpful video! Thank you and keep them coming!!!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Great point regarding full battery as well:). I have not noticed any major differences, however Nikon stated the new firmware was focused on SnapBridge connectivity although I suspect a few other repairs/enhancements were made:).
Thank You...so very helpful in all that you do.
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
so well explained! new firmware update released on 2018/06/07
Thanks for the post/update!:)
Whats new with the update sir???
I can not get the new update to work. If you read the description it still states from V1.11 to V1.12
I believe additional enhancements for bluetooth.
try again using the following link: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/284.html
many thanks for your reply went back watched again problem solved
Another great tutorial video!!!
Thabk you so much for great help❤️✌🏻
thanks once again i have learned so much from you please keep up the great work
Thanks for the post/feedback!:)
Didn't solve my connectivity problem but I did feel like a guru updating the firmware on my "brand new" d 3400. thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I have found SnapBridge to be finicky but the newer firmware seems to have helped to some extent:).
You have had wonderful videos to help. I still have had so many frustrations with Snapbridge, bought sd card reader for iPad, and computer just to transfer that way. Hoping the newest update to Snapbridge will help. But most of the time my D3400 still says Bluetooth is turned off and I can't change it. Still get message that says ' this option not available at current settings or in the cameras current state.' Only thing I don't like about the camera!!
Orcagirl1 B Me also I am having the same issue, bluetooth and location data are not available anymore, the same message that you get.. Even after upgrading the firmware, it still doesn't work ?
Unfortunately, Bluetooth in the menu is only an indicator and not a selectable option which can be confusing in my opinion:). I believe you must re-establish connection with the device using the setup process. Once connected, you should see the Bluetooth option enabled. Always been a bit finicky for me but the firmware update has helped to some extent:).
RealWorld Thanks very much for the information, I'll try this procedure and see what happens ☺
Thank you.. just updated the camera and lens firmware on my D5600.. While downloading the files for the lens update from Nikon download center saw a warning Nikon has put up for this installation, as this update controls the distortion related to lenses.
Caution:
Remove the lens before performing this update.
Thanks for the post/tip:). The newest update contains more than the one I originally posted ... makes sense to remove:).
as always one of the best Nikon Channel does the DSLR Firmware will affect the colours of the photos
Thank you! Just updated my camera!
Great to hear and glad to be of help!:)
Thank You!!!
Forgot to put the link in the description
Good catch and thank you!:) I just added the link to the description:).
Thanks for this. Never updated from when I purchased it in early February. Glad I subscribe to you. Quick question. Should I reinstall Snapbridge on my smartphone? It's always been a bit glitchy.
Glad to be of help!:) I do not believe a reinstall of SnapBridge on your phone will help but it will not hurt either:). I suspect the glitchy experience was/is caused by connection issues from the camera which have hopefully been addressed to some extent with the new firmware:).
You really helped ,thanksss
You are the best! Thank you!
Thank You so much sir. Lots of love from India
glad to be of help and welcome from the united states! :)
Hi, thank you so much. I updated the camera firmware after being unable to connect to my LG G6. I also had to delete the phone from the paired devices list on the camera (click on Bluetooth, paired devices). Apparently the camera thought it was connected from the previous times I tried, but the phone did not (said it couldn't pair). Without me deleting it from the list, the camera was not trying to connect again -thought it already was! After that, I was successful.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Interesting situation and glad to see it worked:).
you"re the best! thanks so much for all your videos!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:)
great video, thank you . Greetings from Hungary
Thanks for the post/feedback and welcome from the United States!:)
Thanks! I have 2 updates for my D7200 but have been hesitant to install them because I have never done it before
Glad to be of help:). You can do it but I will state - do not interrupt the upgrade process for any reason (i.e. do not turn it off, ensure you have good battery life, etc.).
Hey RealWorld!
Can you make a tutorial on how to take family portraits? Which settings and modes to use on the D3400 and so on!
Thanks for the suggestion/question ... might be a good idea for an upcoming vid!:)
Thanks for this plain tutorial! It is the best I've watched. Btw I have a question. I just bought a D3400 and updated it to C 1.12 and LD 2.016 but I don't have LF 1.00 option on my device and no download file for that in nikon product page. Why could it be and do you think it would cause any problems for me?
Best Wishes
Hi Emre - thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) Not a problem regarding LF (lens firmware). Curious to know what lens you are using with your camera? There is not a upgrade at this time for the LF which is relatively fine/normal. The most significant update to firmware will be with the camera (C). The LD and LF options are dependent upon the lens attached to the camera. Not a big concern in my opinion as many people use different lenses with their cameras.
Aha now it makes sense because I did not get the standard kit lens and I purchased a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G prime lens as it is mostly advised for better use than kit lens. Only later I've found out that you can also do amazing job with kit lens :) Lessons learned, this is a good experience for me :) Anyway thank you again sincerely for your honest and very useful videos! I'm a devoted subscriber of your channel. Wish you all the best!
Thanks for the additional feedback!:) The fixed 50 f/1.8 is a GREAT lens and one I would definitely carry in addition to the kit lens. The fixed 50 is great for portraits and action (the f/1.8 creates a nice soft background not capable of the kit lens).
@@RealWorld had the same question, thanks!!!!!!!!!
Very helpful video, thanks.
Thanks for the post/feedback Michael and glad to be of help!:)
Thanks. Appreciate the quick response
Glad to be of help Steve!:)
Just updated to latest firmware, 1.13 and 2.017, had to buy a card reader though, duh! FYI the LD 2.017 firmware says remove the lens before applying the update. Just thought I'd mention that.
Thanks for the post/update and glad to hear it went well:).
It worked bro, thanks!.
For some reason, when I go through all of these steps, I am not getting an update option on the screen that you did. Why might this be?
Can I just download the firmware by connecting the camera through USB to the computer? And then downloading the files to the SD card there?
Excellent video
i have a d3500 nikon and when i put different lens on say my 16/85 mm nikon vr the bottom one lens filmware disappears is this normal thank you garry
Great information for the beginner.
Never would have known about this other wise, thanks!
Glad to be of help!:)
I purchased a Nikon DF in 2013 and haven't checked whether Nikon has released firmware updates. Do you know if Nikon has released firmwares? If so, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to access the site and links. Thanks in advance.
Can we do this in Nikon D7100 too...??? Or is this only for Nikon D3400...??? Or does this applies to all Nikon DSLR’s...???
You should be able to do the same for the D7100 as well ... ensure you retrieve the proper drivers for the right camera though:).
It's not working for me, there is no update section when I replace the card in the camera, only 'DONE', I have tried this several times. Any suggestions appreciated.I am trying to update from version 1.12 to 1.13
Thanks you for this video
. I followed instructions for BACK FOCUS, Now the camera focuses when I push the AEL button, BUT, when I push the shutter button half way down the red focus button still lights up, AND the green focus circle appears as it now does when I push the AEL button.... why does this happen?....I thought that focus button would no longer work because it works now when I push the AEL button....What did I do wrong?????? ALSO I checked the firmware and it is updated but there is no LF 1:00 listed, why?....I am using a sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens...
Great video! How should I back up my photos before I update the camera ?
Since all photos are stored on the SD card, just ensure the photos are copied/transferred to your machine or storage device:).
Thanks :) This helped a lot!
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
Sir which lens is suitable for this camera for background blure ?
Hello sir...i just realize that the d3500 firmware was released....can you make a video how to dlod that camera new firmware vertion?tq
Great tutorial. Keep it up 😀
Hey, I have a suggestion for a next video if you think its worth. I am suggesting a quick/basic bracketing guide with Nikon 3400 for landscape photography. Not many videos around in that area and I had to look into forums.
Thanks for the suggestion and not a bad idea:). Bracketing is always good depending on the lighting conditions.
I recently did the upgrade and it seems to really improve the ability to connect to the devices. Now I just wish Nikon would add some features like time lapse to the D3400. (wishful thinking)
Hi Jim and glad to be of help:). Time lapse would be great!:)
Cant you connect the camera to a computer through a usb cable and access the card and dump the files that way if you dont have a card reader?
Thanks for the post and yes, you can use the camera as a card reader - good point to note/mention!:)
Hi I’m new to photography I have the 3500 how do i know if I Need to upgrade my firmware
Not a problem ... compare the firmware on your camera ( ua-cam.com/video/yiVxtrOmSUw/v-deo.html ) to the firmware on the Nikon site ( here is a link directly to the D3500 - downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/471/D3500.html ). If you see a difference, you should consider upgrading ... since Nikon is not showing any firmware downloads on their site, you are good:).
Nice video. A bit of fluff at the beginning, but good. I did a video on the D3200 when I had that.
Thanks for the post/feedback Sean!:) I try to stay on point and limit my fluff but it does not always happen:).
Mr real world I watched your video on firmware update I did this Monday morning my D3100 and my D5600 how ever they do not have distortion control data on the camera but both have an update for both cameras on the website.
What do I do ?
Thanks for the post:). This video shows how to update both on the camera. What is your version listed for LD ( ua-cam.com/video/yiVxtrOmSUw/v-deo.html )?
Hi, I've recently bought a Nikon D3400 and I was wondering if the SD card has to be empty first or we can keep the photos in? Kinda feel like its a stupid question but I'm really looking forward for an answer that would be really appreciated
Good question:). The card does not have to be empty ... the camera will create a directory on the card to store taken images and leave all other files untouched:).
Another excellent video 👍
Thank you sir and glad to be of help:).
Thank you my friend
Hey Man love your video's I got a new d3500 this Day but seems that my computer don't recognise the camera .. any idea why?? Thank you anyway
Thanks for the feedback!:) You might consider these basic steps I found on a support forum - www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000006488&configured=1&lang=en_GB ... I typically use a card reader to transfer images and rarely connect directly to my machine:).
