What’s crazy is, when these games first came out, and the graphics were unprecedented for the time, our brains upscaled what we were perceiving, so watching this is like watching how I remember experiencing the game for the first time with how my brain fills in the gaps and makes things come alive. As a person who has only basic knowledge and skills of using 3d rendering pipelines, I cannot imagine this hallucination engine producing better or even comparable results to what a proper team of capable humans can achieve with reasonable effort. The fact that it’s trained on “realistic” data doesn’t make the final image any less uncanny valley’esque.
I think this could be use to improve how the environment should be due to the fact that the ai Gen model is producing photorealism quality in a similar environment. It's like having the answers to the test you just have to try and recreate the process

The only use for this kind of tech in a professional setting I can currently think of is producing literally throwaway sketches (which a talented concept artist can produce with very little time using existing references with 10x less manual work required compared to tweaking LLM prompts to avoid hallucinations and right out plagiarism of existing sources). The fact that a producer or other non-creative person would use AI for the task instead of asking a colleague or a contractor likely means it’s not important in the first place to the point that the quality of the work literally doesn’t matter as long as it passes as “realistic” when viewed from a 2m distance on a mobile phone screen. I wonder how much commercial potential this has for the company that worked on these genAI models to continue iterating on them to at least have a CHANCE of ever producing better results in the future.

Of course it's rough because it's still at the beginning stages but the fact it's actually accurate somewhat to the in game cutscenes and gameplay is wild. Give it like 2 to 3 years and it will be definitely improve to give a more better experience. AI truly is a fascinating and scary thing.
Maybe instead of DLSS upscaling or Frame generation, they should focus on using AI for material and shader handling so that the 3d objects have realistic looking lighting with manual fine tuning beforehand.
This is actually a rather interesting shortcut to photorealism. Just cram as much NPUs as possible into the newer genereations of graphics cards and let the filter do all the legwork. All it really needs is scene information and better consistency, with the ability to do it real-time of course. Come to think of it, you can probably get away with scaling the filtered image from lower resolution with something like DLSS, if you want to push the frames out fast. We're probably not that far away (5-8 years) from something like this coming out as a GPU feature.
