    Todd Rundgren as a solo artist as well as his bands The Nazz & Utopia did a lot of excellent power pop that could easily fill up a whole segment. Songs like Love In Action, Open My Eyes, We Gotta Get You A Woman, Time Heals, Couldn't I Just Tell You, You Cried Wolf, and many more that are classic power pop songs.

      @@poprocksradio Wow, that is so cool! "Power Pop Planet" will be coming out soon as a Vinyl LP on Bachelor Records. All the sudden attention is unreal 40+ years after we recorded the tracks, broke up, and lost the mostly-unmixed studio tapes. They turned up in a filing cabinet in 2020. This led us former Bings bandmates on a 2-year adventure of getting the tapes restored, digitized, and finally mixed by our 1981-82 producer. We self-released the songs in 2023 on CD with downloads on Bandcamp, etc.. Suddenly, our '80s songs began popping up on radio and podcasts all over the world. It's been so unexpected. BTW: Our history is steeped in the Hollywood scene, as we played Madame Wong's, The Troubadour, and all over SoCal . . . . In the late-'70s I worked at Greg Shaw's Bomp! Records & Magazine (home to Devo, Josie Cotton, The Romantics, Shoes, The Last, The Plimsouls, Iggy Pop, Flamin' Groovies, 20/20, and so many other great bands). ~DAVE 😎

    Good job making Atlanta's The Producers #1. They were playing the same big rock bars in the South that my bands were in the early 80s. I met the band's lawyer through a guitarist I knew in Birmingham and heard a lot of their songs on a cassette he had before they were released. The bass player Kyle Henderson was also in an earlier band called Whiteface that was incredibly talented & did all sorts of styles, all 4 guys were lead singers. The Producers should have been big stars, but it was a record company political problem that prevented it; that happens a lot. Their first album was like a greatest hits album.

      @poprocksradio I attended Iowa State university from 1981-1985. I remember seeing Hawks perform at an outdoor Frat party and was instantly hooked. They had some airplay on college radio. The singles off their debut were Right Away (#63 on Billboard Hot 100) and It's Alright, It's okay (#32 on Billboard's AOR chart). Every song on that first album was great. The second album "30 Seconds Over Ortho" had some great songs but flopped and they disbanded after the record company canceled them. The recorded a third album "Hawks III" but it was only released on cassette). They did release a CD in 2003 called "Perfect World Radio" and it contained many of the songs that were on Hawks III. Ever heard of Fotomaker? You could do a whole segment just on them. They were a power pop supergroup out of NYC / Long Island in 1978 which included two members of The Rascals and the guitarist from the Raspberries, but the two stars of the band were two unknown Long Island Italians who wrote and sang all the songs. Their first album could have been a greatest hits album as there wasn't a weak song on it. They did other styles as well, but they really nailed power pop. I had to retrieve my post because it vanished. This is what I typed as a response...
    Countdown episodes get an annual replay on an allnight music show in Australia called RAGE, and it's that show I source most of my material from, including Countdown. Unfortunately, the ABC had about 100 episodes of 70's Countdown erased due to cost saving. It remains a sore point in Countdown history. However, the full episodes that have survived are available for viewing on the Internet Archive. A youtube channel called TassieTV uploads old Countdown episodes on his channel almost daily. That channel is worth checking out. When Countdown was concluded in 1987, a new music show called RAGE began airing on the ABC (Countdown's channel). Rage is an allnight music program that takes up Friday and Saturday nights and 2 hours around 2am for the rest of the week. It's currently the oldest music-video show in the world. In 1993, Rage began it's Countdown marathon. This is typical of Countdown: ua-cam.com/video/LFvPGjpKzVQ/v-deo.html

    Two bands that I think should be at the top: Twenty Twenty, a synth pop rock band with great hooks, is up there. However, the band that caused another band to rename itself The English Beat, was The Beat. Pop culture missed out on this amazing band(now called The Paul Collins Beat), and millions of people never heard this amazingly tight band. No one like them. Trust me on this! Their debut album The Beat is awesome.

    I'm not sure what you'd consider "forgotten", or for that matter "Power Pop"... I suppose they're both subjective on some level... but I'd suggest Material Issue (Chicago), The Redwalls (Chicago) and The Kings (Vancouver). Maybe The Redwalls are more Indie and The Kings more Rock. Idk.

    • @poprocksradio
      @poprocksradio  10 місяців тому +1

      Totally agree...most of this is pretty subjective. The definition of power pop is the source of endless debate (though there are some core things most folks agree on). As for "forgotten"...that word is really more dramatic than it should be. 🤣. For each of these bands, they all have loyal fans who have never left them, even if popular music has moved on. Love both Material Issue and The Kings! Didn't know The Redwalls - listened to a couple tracks off Universal Blues - quite enjoyed that! They must be putting something in the water in Illinois...too many great bands from there. Thanks for that and thanks for watching!

    • @BDUBZ49
      @BDUBZ49 10 місяців тому

      @@poprocksradio The Redwalls notable album was Da Nova (2005). Of the 13 tracks, 8 are great and the rest are still listenable. Heavy Beatles influence. They arose around the same time as other retro-sounding Indie bands.. The Fratellis, The Strokes, The Ataris, Jet etc. They re-worked/polished a couple songs from Universal Blues and included them on Da Nova. One of their songs "Build A Bridge" was used in an AT&T commercial. "It's Alright" was featured in an episode of Entourage. They broke up after their 3rd album, having never released any singles for airplay. The one brother, Logan Baron, continued to make music and perform.
