  • The business that has evolved into Genus Brewing Company originated when I was a 24 year old college drop out with little money to my name. Over the last 7 years myself and a team of very important people have molded it into a stable brand and a growing neighborhood brewery!

    Some key interesting parts/numbers I'm just pulling out of the commentary for others, maybe it helps, are the $2100 NNN lease / month numbers originally and TTB filings details at 19:10 and brew house capacity originally was just under 1BBL (ok 30 gal mash 50 gal BK with lots of 5 gallon small batch), grew to more like 50 gal MT/BK capability at time of recording filling 4-5 BBL fermenters at 26:00 (so 3-4 back to back sessions for fermenter filling...ouch). Plus comments on 7BBL contract brewing option since you have TTB license. Would NOT recommend starting with homebrew supply side first (inventory management 29:00) compared to brewery (even though that seems how originally started?) and pretty much 98% self consuming in tap room of output (though working to expand distribution and marketing at some point). Seems to have 1/5/7BBL fermenters to utilize at 30:00. Seems like maybe ~15BBL / month type figures on output(?) and at point left original location, was doing $2k/month tap sales max. Also commented on maybe 100-150 unique tap room vistors / week, though between 500-1000 rough guess on weekly visits...sometimes 100 / day numbers (editorial: probably that was a big day...separately I expect 2-3 pints is typical, so, figure 50 average person * 2 pints / day that is maybe 12.5 gal/day or maybe call it a keg per day and maybe not 7 days / week, so lets just call it 20-25 kegs/month or ~12 BBL month? which aligns to the brewing frequency ball part of 15BBL / month production). Some of key brewhouse upgrades (not capacity, but engineering/capability) was hop-back and glycol / jacketed fermenters 34:00.

    much respect. I have a Mexican restaurant and I want to make it into a brewery as well, but it is so much work and money, and right know I work like 80 hours a week, so I don't have the energy. The hardest part is to come up with a good team invested in the idea. but anyway, great channel, outstanding knowledge. great success to you.

    Is there any chance of digging a little further into the TTB application process? Maybe things you learned, to help others get through the process quicker.

    Is the brewing world super competitive? It is such an art form and a passion that I can't see brewery's feuding with one another. I know the big brewer - microbrewery rivalry. But I don't see much Micro - Micro feuding.

    Very informative! I'm planning to apply for a license myself and couldn't find a place where I could get my questions answered. We need more information about the process of applying. What are pitfalls to avoid? Some very specific questions about the location, etc. Is anything you could recommend?

    Thoughts on production only brewing if you can build up a brewery on your own property (or doing this and having a smaller space as your taproom) vs having the brewery on location with the tap room?

    • @Piperdude26
      @Piperdude26 2 роки тому

      If your own property is zoned correctly, near people or amenities, go for it. People often want to see your brewery, I know I'm one of them.... I just enjoy seeing how each brewer... brews.... go figure... also they don't all look the same/ function the same. That said, opening a production only can be nice as customers ALWAYS want to talk to the brewer and if you're OK with talking with customers about your beer after a LONG shift then cool, but for most people a little reprieve after a long brew day is nice and keeping the production facility separate is great. In Reno where I am there are several breweries that are production only except certain days, they are brewpubs (serve food) and they are successful. However, I have only ever worked in production and taprooms combined and I do like talking with the customers.... I know this reply is two years after the initial question but here it is....

    Skipped through the vid a little may have missed it but question is are you going to design a turn key setup for homebrewers such as claw hammer has done? Interested to see what equipment you would suggest using.
    Currently use a converted Sanke keg with a pump as a recirculating mash tun with a standard stainless pot for boiling.

    how many gallons were you brewing when you started? Have a hard time believing that you were able to get a brewery with 2k when one 15bbl tank costs over 10k.

    I highly recommend editing your videos, buy a better shirt and making a script/outline of what you’re going to say (like you’re planning on writing a short story) to make your video more concise and cohesive. Good job laying out some information for folks. Keep it up.

    Hey man...I'm gonna say this a respectful as possible....It's pretty clear from this vid that you didn't start a brewery for $2k. It's quite insulting to actual breweries and people that leveraged their own money and investor's money...that you didn't do what this title says. U clearly state ur parents helped in a few ways. Just own that. You're giving false hope to others...for views. You started a store, which has a completely diff license with '$2k in your account". Then over years...you were able to get your parent to leverage a loan for you. I own a brewery...I know this post is a sham and insulting. I love what you two have done...but own the truth.

    • @GenusBrewing
      @GenusBrewing  3 роки тому +4

      I was a 23 year old with a kid and one on the way that saved up 2k after working my ass off to pay down my debt... when I opened the store I had a 10k line of credit - and got another 5k loan after being open for 6 months (yes from my parents - still at a 4% interest rate) I turned that into a brewery and didn't take on more debt until I expanded to a bigger taproom.
      I probably could have been more profitable if I started the brewery before the shop, and spent less money doing so - it was a slow burn and I had to work second and third jobs the first 4 years just to pay employees and build the business.
      I didn't have a high paying corporate job, or rich investors - I bartended. Say what you will about the story, but I am proud of what I built on a shoe-string budget, and 15k in debt on top of the 2k I had to my name is super reachable for anyone with decent credit. I don't recommend doing it the way I did, but I am proud of how I built the business. The title is not disingenuous - if you think its insulting in some way then you probably have a misinterpretation of what our business is or how it was built.
