Purchased the exact bike 4 weeks ago with an Akrapovič exhaust, Sat Nav 6 and quick shifter. TFT screen is incredible although mine turned off during a hot Australian ride for 2 hours, still to be sorted by BMW...!!! Some special mods going on including extending the beautiful "blue" frame to the subframe and shaft - great vlog mate
Hey matey, thanks for the kind words. What an awesome bike. Great idea about extending the blue frame. Why they don’t do that at the factory I don’t know. Ride safe buddy :)
No one can say it's a bad bike. My only worry with these is if you still own it after warranty. Things like the £1500 exhaust valve O-ring etc that you highlighted in a previous video ( i believe Toby's bike) I simply couldn't afford to repair it. Still a dream bike. Thanks for the review!
I bought my Rallye in November 2017. I quite like the TFT but here in Holland with the S.O.S button, it costs an extra 1000 euros ! Personally I prefer the look of the analogue clocks which is what I went with. Couldn’t justify the extra money for something I hardly ever look at anyway. Great video again :-)
Thanks for the kind words matey. Wow that’s extortion for the sos! The dials are great too and we have them at the moment, only a little difficult to see the KMH
RiderCamTV 1000 euros for the TFT and SOS .... RIDICULOUS !! Luckily we only have km’s here on our clocks so very easy to see, but I know what you mean about the UK ones with both miles and km’s .... does make it difficult to read. The missenden flyer also complains about the same thing. If I ride in the UK then I have miles displayed on the satnav so I can check my speed because you have SOOOOOOOOOO many speed cameras.
Bought my first GS last November and ride it in stop and go traffic a lot when I commute and find the rain mode is just perfect for that otherwise I ride it in dynamic mode.
Nice review Mark. Picking up my Rallye in the morning. Soooo excited. Went with the analogue clocks though as it meant I got it cheaper. Means I can add some accessories! No sat nav though. Really can't justify the cost. Keep the videos coming. You guys rock.
Great Video, as usual. In your opinion, for those of us who are in the market for a used 2017 or 2018 GSA, is it worth having an '18 with TFT and Nav VI configuration vs the Analogue & Nav VI and money-saving that represent? Thanks, guys!
i would go with the 18 plate all day long.. the TFT screen is crisp and allows you to do lots of stuff, and the simple things like change from MPH to KPH easily without the difficulty of trying to read the small font when abroad...
I agree with you if the R1200 sticker was in blue it would have looked so much better. The quick shift was supposed to be smoother did you notice much of a difference? I like the hill hold function. I don't think I will change my 2017 for one but I might have one eventually. It does look the business
Of the BMs I've ridden with riding modes (2014 and 2017 K1600GT sport and 2015 and 2017 R1200RT) I preferred them in dynamic mode and only used road or rain in atrocious weather on a muddy back lane and in torrential rain in some stop/start traffic.
Hi great review, tyre noise big issue has anyone solved it? also you mentioned a mate had his panniers colour coded and looked stunning, have you a picture at all I would like to get my done! cheers!!!
Hi mate thanks for the kind words. We haven’t got tyre noise now we are using metzeler Tourane next and roadtec 01’s Will see if we can dig out a pic of those panniers but not sure we have seen a pic of them on my seen them in real life. We will have to take a picture of them next time we see the bike :)
Welcome matey. :) You can use either as your ride. You can use the clutch as normal or change up and down without. If you do use the clutch it doesn’t disengage anything that I know of since you are making the same foot movement whether you use it or not. (There is probably a technical person that will say it does disengage it) but from my ‘riding’ point of view it ‘just works’ either way :) Hope that helps.ride safe
The quick shift is totally transparent. Use it or ignore it at will. I love it but after 50 years of riding muscle memory takes over and I still find I use clutch and shut the throttle sometimes. Bike does not care.
Hi Mark, picked up my new GS with TFT from Ocean in Plymouth a couple of weeks ago, I went for spoked wheels this time, was expecting another set of “Panicky3s” but pleasantly surprised that it came shod with Metzeler Tourance Next, much better.
Hiya Matey glad you are happy with the bike. The Tourance Next are amazing, I consistently get 10,000 miles plus out of mine but currently I'm using Metzler Roadtec 01's that are ticking all the right boxes. I did a review on them so have a look at our reviews on both tyres. I'm off to Germany at the end of the month so will do an update on the 01's while I'm away.
Hi I've just bought a new GS Rallye... it also has the anarchy tyres, what tyres would you recommend for this bike? I hear the metzler roadtec 01's are really good ?
Either the metzeler tourance nexts or the roadtec 01’s as they are both exceptional tyres with loads of miles in them with us regularly getting 10,000 out of a set
AG Coarseman, these Pirelli are the best in particular for rain! Karoo is not in the same category! Because karoo is already for all terrain, the other two is for asphalt. BUT, it all depends on who grabs the handlebar!
Good review, will pick mine up in a couple of weeks triple black 😀. Interesting comments on the tyres, did BMW changed them prior to picking up your new bike or are they after market.
Are you sure the brakes are "less harsh" in rain mode? I can't imagine any manufacturer altering the brake characteristics in modes, ABS yes? I'm not saying I know.
I believe the power of the brakes isn't altered, its the sensitivity of the ABS that changes- Road mode is normal, Rain mode the ABS cuts in sooner, Dynamic mode the ABS cuts in later. Throttle response is also altered and also the point at which the traction control cuts in - kicks in sooner with Rain mode and later with Dynamic. But generally Dynamic mode is your friend and the other two are just for really bad roads / weather or if you're just feeling especially tired and emotional.
I have had mine for three weeks after 5 years with a GTL. As with the GTL the GS rain mode is great for traffic filtering as it gives a more relaxed throttle response. `mode make no difference to braking but it does affect the traction control.
Andy Clift BMW reckon the modes do alter the ABS as well as the TCS and the throttle response. It's the sensitivity/ point it kicks in that changes not the power. Thing is the ABS has been so seamless and non-intrusive for a good few years now that most of the time you won't notice. BUT it is another good reason for switching out of dynamic mode on shitty or non-existent roads (says he who did 99.9% of his K1600 miles in dynamic)
Regarding your '16 GSA fitted with the Metzeler Roadtec 01's, how do they (01's) enhance your GSA' s performance "Off-road" (gravel, mud, dirt....) ?? Thanks.
Hiya, I have only used the bike with these tyres on tracks. The tyres are 90/10 road based so they would be a struggle. That said when I first got this bike Toby and I rode around some small tracks close to where we live on the OEM Annakee3's. If you take things steady most tracks are ok..... Possibly ha!
Interesting that you mention road noise coming from the front tyre. I have a GS1200 TE and to be perfectly honest it’s a fine bike which is let down by very intrusive noise. In fact this is the reason that I am going to sell the bike as I just can’t live with it any longer. I have changed the tyres from Anakee 3 to Michelin Road Pilot but it made bugger all difference. Don’t waste your time speaking with the BM dealership regarding this matter as they don’t want to know.
michael johnson I don’t have any noise from mine; from the previous pilots or metzeler nexts. Do you have a none standard screen or other wind deflectors on your bike? Or could it be your helmet causing a strange noise? I’ve had 8 of these bikes & no noise from the front🤔
Hello Cougar66, I have changed the screen, but the noise was apparent on the bike from day one of ownership. I also ride my venerable old Honda GL1100 wearing the same helmet as I do on the GS, with no apparent noise. The noise is most definitely emanating from the front tyre. The smoothness of the road surface has an influence on the noise, the smoother the road is then the quieter the bike is. I have decided to change the bike for something else as this is spoiling a very nice bike. My friend owns a 2014 GS 1200 TE and his bike is extremely quite - maybe I have just been unlucky with my bike.
The Urban Camo isn't a "wrap" its a proper paint job albeit a very expensive option at £2k. And that was from OceanBMW Falmouth when I was in dropping my GSA of for a service was talking to the head honcho down there.
Darren Elbrow why do we have to pay sooo much extra for a Sat Nav when most cars have it fitted as standard... 😡. Can I just say thats the first time I have ever used an emoticon...ha!
The built-in TFT will also relay navigation directions and prompts from the phone, so in effect there is a "poor-mans" GPS for most riders. BMW have some videos online explaining the functionality, it requires a free app be downloaded to your phone, which then relays via the dash display. The extra BMW GPS navigator then offers the advantages of a separately powered GPS with all the bells and whistles, you pay your money and take your choice.
I loved the grip of the Michelin Annakee 3's, both wet and dry .... I tried Metzeler Roadtec 01 , which had an arguably superior feel and better grip , but lasted for just one 1900 mile trip ! ( I wont be buying those again!) maybe Continental Road Attack next time ....
No need to subscribe for the SOS service . Its a great step forwards . Intelligent Emergency Call automatically contacts the BMW Call Centre via a sim built into the bike. - independently of your own mobile phone, both at home and abroad. Specially trained personnel will then establish contact with you, inform the emergency services and give you support by telephone - in your mother tongue if possible.
So you don’t like the tyres, the stock panniers rot, spend more money on decor and it’s about the most expensive bike out there. I’m I bit confused what makes this bike so popular?
The tyres are just a contract that BMW have as they purchase job lots for their bikes but that’s the same as any manufacturer. They just aren’t good tyres (anakees). The panniers get mottled but they are still good and are waterproof from our experience so no issues there. Its sooo good to ride though.... Yes the panniers look awful if not painted the 'Panicky3's are garbage in my opinion but other people love them, its a Marmite thing.
Yes I understand the points you are both making but I’m a still a bit confused about this bike. Is it a road bike or an off road bike? There are better road bikes and it’s too heavy for an off-roader? Have you watched races to places?
It’s both really. For us it’s one of the ultimate tourers with comfort, tech, range and packing ability. There are lots of people who off-road with it although we haven’t yet.
I admit it but thats what happens when you have five minutes from meeting the bike to riding it.... Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it but yes 'muppet' does come in to the equation.
Doesn't matter, brought a smile to my face. As you were riding through Falmouth the screen looked like it had a screen protector on, but I told myself that it was rain droplets on the display. 👍

This is “The Bike “ and there’s always something nice and new to learn about. Another great review, Mark and thanks for the video. 👍
Hey buddy thanks for the nice words. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Ow yea im picking mine up on Saturday and cant wait Happy Days
Amazing stuff matey. You’ll love it :) Ride safe

100% mate. The rain mode is a good option here
Just picked mine up yesterday, fantastic bike!
Certainly is! Enjoy your new ride matey :)
Cheers guys
Nice review Mark. Picking up my Rallye in the morning. Soooo excited. Went with the analogue clocks though as it meant I got it cheaper. Means I can add some accessories! No sat nav though. Really can't justify the cost.
Keep the videos coming. You guys rock.
Hey Rob. Thanks so much for the kind words. It really means a lot to us both :)
Enjoy your fab new bike :)
Another cool and calm review - pleasure to watch as usual - ta
Thanks for the kind words Stan. Glad you enjoyed it. Ride safe buddy :)
I'd move up from my Tracer 900 to the R1200GSA if I could. They're a bit beyond my budget unfortunately. Awesome bike!!!
Great Video, as usual. In your opinion, for those of us who are in the market for a used 2017 or 2018 GSA, is it worth having an '18 with TFT and Nav VI configuration vs the Analogue & Nav VI and money-saving that represent? Thanks, guys!

Buddy's Insight hiya the quick shift was no better or worse than my own 2017 bike. Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the video Mark. I have black Bumot panniers, which are excellent quality and cost £600. Cheers, Andy
They are very good Andy and much sturdier than the BMW ones
Of the BMs I've ridden with riding modes (2014 and 2017 K1600GT sport and 2015 and 2017 R1200RT) I preferred them in dynamic mode and only used road or rain in atrocious weather on a muddy back lane and in torrential rain in some stop/start traffic.
The different modes are great indeed. And dynamic is fun :)

Check out the Pirelli Scorpion trail 2 too, I think they are even better than the Tourance next (which is a great one too).
With that new Screen. When travelling abroad can you change the mileage from miles to kilometers?
Will find out :)
NO but the Nav 5 is useful abroad for that. It shows the correct speed limits on screen but changes them too MPH to match the speedo.
Totally agree about the tyres. Horrible is probably the most polite comment I could make about them. Definitely need to change them. Nice review.
Thanks for he kind words matey.
Pirelli!
Will be trying the Karoo streets very soon
AG Coarseman, these Pirelli are the best in particular for rain! Karoo is not in the same category! Because karoo is already for all terrain, the other two is for asphalt. BUT, it all depends on who grabs the handlebar!
Good review, will pick mine up in a couple of weeks triple black 😀. Interesting comments on the tyres, did BMW changed them prior to picking up your new bike or are they after market.
Thanks matey. The anakee tyres seem to be on a lot of bike from new at BMW but the metzeler are much better

not at the moment unfortunately, but if we see Steve (the guy that has them) we will try to get a couple of pics
Nice review , enjoyable and accurate !
Enjoyed your review Mark, calm and relaxing style. Did you think you sounded a bit like Harry Enfields Bob Fleming character early on though ... ;-)
Hahahah. Thanks matey. 🙈😬😎👍
RiderCamTV no worries, keep them coming.
Will do :)

Mark Holroyd. Appreciate your response. I've decided to go with the Motoz Tractionator GPS. I use my 2018 GSA 70/30 so I need "Off Road" performance.
Interesting that you mention road noise coming from the front tyre. I have a GS1200 TE and to be perfectly honest it’s a fine bike which is let down by very intrusive noise. Hi what tyres does your friend have?
The bike picks up your GPS on your phone just like the KTM
Awesome bike
The Urban Camo isn't a "wrap" its a proper paint job albeit a very expensive option at £2k. And that was from OceanBMW Falmouth when I was in dropping my GSA of for a service was talking to the head honcho down there.
That’s very true matey. No my type of colours though :/
RiderCamTV I actually quite like it but I do not like it enough to pay £2k extra for it :-)
Agree totally
ummm, i have just put a deposit down on this EXACT bike from Ocean with only one previous owner and 3k miles, why was it not sold in 2 years?
All singing and dancing tft screen, but still with a separate extra cost sat nav!!!
Darren Elbrow why do we have to pay sooo much extra for a Sat Nav when most cars have it fitted as standard... 😡. Can I just say thats the first time I have ever used an emoticon...ha!

Wow that’s not many miles! We have gone over that already and hoping for the usual 10,000 miles from a set
I prefer the Pirelli than michelin! They say it rains in the UK ... They say!
I think this weekend was the first in a long time without the rain. Eek!

But I will stick with my X-ADV
The TFT screen is lacking proper explanation in the owners manual. Had to hunt for hours on the net.
Not good.

Doesn't matter, brought a smile to my face.
As you were riding through Falmouth the screen looked like it had a screen protector on, but I told myself that it was rain droplets on the display.
👍
American slide name respondent formula trailer now jet fear.
That is one big heavy turd
It loses its weight when riding as it is extremely well balanced :)
These bikes are totally extortionate cash cow and massively over priced in my opinion. My original gs 1150 adv will do all this bike can and more and sits in the garage appreciating...why are BMW such a rip off...greedy?
Why on Earth your government forces you guys to carry such silly L A R G E license plates on your motorcycles, are the cops there sight deficient?
Hahahah. Don’t know why either unless it’s to do with the ANPR system
Agreed, size of number plates spoils the look of many bikes.and may well have something to do with law enforcers deficiencies. many years ago a cop on night duty found a dead body in Sauchiehall Street and dragged it into Hope Street before writing his report
