I live in Griffith's town and when I was growing up I used to walk to the signal box at Pontypool Road Station it was very busy then. Also I remember going to Barry on a couple of occasions and climbing in and out of all types of engines and diesel units. Just last week I took part in a photography shoot at Bewdley Station on the SVR so watching the video tied in all those memories thanks.

That old Steam loco looks in good shape. I remember climbing around them in Barry back in the early 80s and they were pretty damn rough to say the least . Great old footage though and wow look at how much a gallon of petrol was 😂... Gteat bit of film.
‘Spot the difference’: at least two different Hymeks with three different head code reporting numbers between them. Did the loco overnight in Hereford?
Thank goodness for Dai Woodham. I would like to see a loco named after him. The new build GWR County class will be named County of Glamorgan as and tribute to the great man. The circumstances of the whole Woodhams story brings together some aspects of history into one place. Cardiff Docks were overwhelmed in the heyday of Welsh coal exports, Barry Docks were selected to handle the overflow of coal wagons waiting to be unloaded. Many sidings were laid to hold wagons till they could be taken to the dockside for loading into the ships. When the coal trade declined the sidings lay dormant, the land beside them had enough space for a scrap yard to be built. The combination of siding space and the scrap yard converged to eventually give birth to the steam heritage society we know today. Fortunately, Cashmore's yard at Newport and Cohens at Morriston had no storage space to hold a lot of locos waiting to be submitted to the cutters gas axe, especially as the cutting up of the loco was a complex job because of the different types of metal to be sorted out, thus a convergence of circumstances allowed for a new era in the history of British steam locomotives. the8224sm, you state that the nswgr 60 class loco is the most powerful loco in the southern hemisphere. not true. google states that they are the most powerful loco in australia. still not true. a very attractive loco, to be sure, but in the tractive effort category, it was exceeded by the nswgr d57 class. and if you are talking horsepower, the record for australia's most powerful steam loco in terms of horsepower is the victorian railways h class. at 3600hp, it can be safely argued it was the most powerful loco in australia from 1941 until the an class diesel was introduced in 1992. the dyno chart showing this is on the internet. i have never seen a nswgr dyno chart on the internet. they were probably too embarrassed by the masterpieces produced south of the border.
There's a very interesting book on the history of Barry docks and the scrapyard. The woodham family were on the docks from the start to the finish. I borrowed the book off my brother recently who's lived in Barry for over 20 years.
A brilliant story unfolds 😃😃. I did notice it passed the same cartic4 train twice 🤣 history themselves now I believe. Also loved the bowler hat calling "hit em up" during the shunting. I was a shunter myself in the 70s. . . . happy days 👍👍👍
Hello Robert, fellow retired Shunter here too. Started in 1969 at Stoke Gifford until the upside closed, then moved to Pz mixed Shunting, ending up at Bristol Bath Rd as a Guard. Some great men to work with, all characters.

I went and took some b/w photos in 78 when the middle roads had be filled in for a car par. Sacrilege!!! Now it's a mini New Street, and twice as cold !! 🤣🤣

I remember on rare occasions as a child seeing a 'dead' steam loco in among the consist of a mixed freight. It doesn't seem likely that such would be allowed today, almost certainly.

As a kid living in Filton Bristol, I saw dozens of steam Loco’s being taken to Barry, usually 3 at a time pulled by a Steam Loco.

I think 7067 shunting from the scrapyard to Barry. Then 7060 to Hereford or Kidderminster? Then 7009 shunting on SVR rails.

@@robertbate5790 I worked with a Driver Stan Harris at Pz, he was at Snow Hill late 60s/70s. It certainly is different today.

I remember a Barry condition Bradley Manor turning up in Bewdley in 1980ish, in a much rougher state than 80079 had been in nine years earlier.

How ironic that the Hymek which most likely has been scrapped, transporting the Tank, which is now preserved. In fact 2 Hymeks!
Hymeks were involved in death convoys of engines to South Wales scrapyards. Quite ironic.
