As a northerner I lived and worked as a cab driver in London in the 90s. Naked came across to me like a documentary. I met loads of sad lonely people. Surrounded by crowds and lonely as piss on a lamppost. I was in a steady relationship but being a young bloke I played the field of the options given to a cab driver. I met similar types of women to all those portrayed screwing away their loneliness. Too many. In the end I gave them what I could and left. There were a plethora of lost and lonely, some surprisingly beautiful. I left London eventually back to the north and the friendly warmer hearted folk.
I saw Naked when it first came out at the Rio Cinema in Hackney. The house they filmed where girls live was just down the road from the cinema. My friend and I were really depressed from the film and went to the local pub and sat in silence. A great film and I have been contemplating watching it again, as I haven't seen it since. Thanks for the review. And good on them giving the Irish band Therapy a plug.
When people talk of De Niro and Al Pacino as the greatest of actors and performances they should be introduced to David Thwelis and in particular this glorious haunting performance.
Dont think there is a single greatest actor but rather performances where the stars between director, actor and script aligned. Naked is such a film but so is Possession and Isabella Adjani for example.
A total masterpiece. I'm not sure, 30 years later, I have the stomach to watch it again... though I know I should. It really resonated with me.. at 21 when I watched it the London it depicted, a cold, un-caring, cramped space of flat shares that I sort of knew from student friends.. I'd move to London 2 years later and at times 90s London was a hard place to adjust to.
Masterpiece. Saw this on a whim a few years back when it had an anniversary rerelease and it’s stuck with me since then. One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen.
Thewlis gave a career defining performance in this film. It stays with you after the end credits . One of the most uncomfortable films I’ve ever watched but utterly compelling at the same time.
I have a memory of The Independent newspaper giving away a VHS copy in one of their Saturday editions - this was in the 90s, I think. Man, I watched that a lot.
Yes, most lazy, narcissistic, sociopathic twats tend to have "commentary on how people trade labour for currency" - right before they ask you for some money and a place to crash. Rationalizing sloth is charming until you're over 25. The two types of "Naked" fans can be split between age groups. Younger people see him as anti-hero and a crusader; older people see him as a sociopathic parasite. In truth - and what makes the film so TRAGIC - is that he's BOTH of these things - but his sociopathic, parasitic nature prevents him from being the former outside of his own mind. He's a rapist, a criminal and a sociopathic POS - with a brain that he could use for something better - but he refuses to. One can interpret that as society itself pushing him into paralysis between those two natures - or you could just see him as a POS. The film doesn't offer an answer, either way, which is what gives it a lot of its power.
I watched it again last week. Such a dark and profound film. It affects you on different levels. I definitely think the Jeremy character felt like an inspiration for Patrick Bateman.
Top 10 best British films easily. It ranks alongside A Room for Romeo Brass in having possibly the most unlikable main character ever to disgrace the screen, and the unnerving undercurrent of nihilistic violence is never far away. A film most people will only watch once, but that's probably enough.
It's not too dark; it's real. I saw this as a teenager and moved to London a decade later and had nothing like the same experience. Stop making your own life the same as a movie that you remember.
I saw it in Frankfurt in German. Big mistake. Thought it was the worst film I'd seen in years. Dunno how I would have disliked it in the original soundtrack.
please have the sharp man (mister mayo) sitting on the right of the screen speak more frequently if at all possible. his commentary is essential and hilarious i feel. wouldnt you agree? additionally if you favored this exquisite film selection by all means check out 1997s Bent co-starring Clive Owen yet another banger.
“Did he have the chips with him?” “He had a huge one on his shoulder!” A very strange entry in Mike Leigh’s filmography but undeniably one of his best. A truly apocalyptic film where extreme alienation and isolation has poisoned the well of the world
I really liked this film when it came out but with hindsight I think it suffers from the same problem of most Mike Leigh films which is the characters are really too grotesque and almost cartoonish.
When i saw this as a 12 year old i thought id never seen anything quite like it, now as a adult when i watched it again i thought it was Bullshit tbh...
Kind of agree.... I was at University when I saw it and it was the "cool" Movie at the time...and I thought it was great....the bible stuff, the quotes the funny violent fellow... Nowadays it just seems unpleasant and a load of nonsense really. Thewliss acted well, but the story is toss and very negative.
It’s a gloriously fucking horrible movie with excellent performances throughout. Listen to the Orb “S.A.L.T track from the album Orblivion for haunting voice samples from the movie.
"apocalyptic parable"? Ok, I'd never in a million years use those words to describe this movie. I adore this movie beyond measure, but you lost me within the first 7 seconds of the video. "picaresque" would work.
I remember watching this film thinking it was too tryhard and pretentious, the main character tries so hard to make the audience like him but he's just intolerable and most loud-mouths from Manchester are. I have met many people like the main character in my lifetime and I couldn't wait to get away from them.
Whenever I encounter a Scottish person, I ask them if they "dream in Scotch" and if they "dream about sporran-clad, caber-tossing haggis galloping over porridge-covered glens".

my jaw hung the entire runtime when i watched Naked. i was in awe of Thewlis' performance
I have been a fan of Leigh and Twellis ever since seeing this landmark film.
I must have been about 18 or 19 when this movie came out and it terrified me for a long time afterwards. That music too...still gives me shivers.
This film has a supporting character that I swear to God is EXACTLY like a British version of Patrick Bateman.
Unforgettable. Do not see this if you’re in a vulnerable state.
Thewlis gave a career defining performance in this film. It stays with you after the end credits . One of the most uncomfortable films I’ve ever watched but utterly compelling at the same time.
Thewlis is gold in everything he's in!
comme vous etes ;)
Brilliant film, Lesley Sharp is also incredible as Louise - a very tactile performance opposite Thewlis' vagobondian, headstrong Johnny
This is Mike Leigh's best. Feels on another level than his other stuff, for me
I have a memory of The Independent newspaper giving away a VHS copy in one of their Saturday editions - this was in the 90s, I think. Man, I watched that a lot.
btw 1:13, Bet Megadeth supported by Pantera was a cracking metal gig
hell yea
Would love to listen to those conversations over the "hundreds of cups of coffee"
David Thewlis was terrifyingly good in this movie. His acidic nihilism is haunting and the monologues delivered with other world intensity.
Terrific film and review
Mike Leigh classic.
One of the very best UK movies I have watched
Brilliant film, great review.
A brilliant performance!
this is an incredible film!!
Great film and RIP Katrin Cartlidge who played Sophie.
I've missed Kermode & Mayo so much
Mike Leigh is grand high priest of British drama.
The main character in this film has great commentary on how people trade labour for currency most of their life...
