I was on a psychiatric ward with a man like him last year. I have schizophrenia. I watch clips like this for the sake of endurance, it’s like soldiering my way through the video. I wanted to calm the situation on the ward down and I felt deeply sorry for the guy. I don’t know where he is now. I’m in a much better place. Whenever I think of that ward, I think of the scene in The Thin Red Line where the Japanese soldier m’éditâtes in the middle of the battle. I think to myself that even though that soldier was only meditating for his own self, his presence calmed the soldiers who were fighting and gave them some sanity in all the chaos, fear and suffering.
@@HarryBarry97 In my opinion, David can do no wrong. Latest favorites are Fagin in Artful Dodger, Hades in KAOS (sadly cancelled), John Dee in Sandman, and the title character in An inspector Calls. For insane comedy, the Shame Wizard in Big Mouth/Human Resources. His kindest and softest characters are Lupin, Jerry in Black Beauty, and Mr. Kinsky in Besieged.
Just watched this on Film4 - very refreshing. It was great to see a movie which was so thought provoking. Stands shoulders above most of todays movies. You can feel the director's (Mike Leigh) compassion for British society running throughout. They should show more of his movies on televisiion and rattle the status quo.
Thewlis as johnny is ultimately dislikeable in this film, but some of his dialogues is amazing. when she goes "yeah alright" she's likely heard all his stories before lol.
I fell off the wagon watching "Blithering Heights" here. Not kidding, I hate every time I see anything associated with it. I think it should be banned forever. I think I had 9 months and I just went over to the BP and got some nice malt in a sack. Got some Sam Adams to cover. Abused the cat, I guess I was just trying to get in character your honor, I don't know... But YOU now YOU have been warned 😢😮 props to David and every time I see you in the Big Lebowski It does bring tears to my eyes and I have mixed feelings I need you to know.🎉
I saw this movie for the second time yesterday. First was 3 years ago and I loved it, this time around, Im appalled at the fact that I loved it. Been thinking and reading on it, trying to figure out what it means for a society, that this movie is loved by so many.
Laird Kruger it’s been four weeks now. I gave it some thought. What did I love about this movie. Well, pacing, photography, acting, soundtrack, writing. This time around though, I saw it with my girlfriend, and I couldn’t help but feel this misogynistic layer to the movie. We discussed it, she couldn’t watch till the end. I read a lot on it. It’s just one of those movies. The thing is, when I saw it alone, I didn’t feel it was misogynistic, and I still don’t, it’s opposite, it helped me Change my ways, the main character gets to fuck himself up, while I a different path, I don’t have to destroy myself, he has done it, and I went with him on that journey through the movie. That’s what’s great about cinema. Word of advice though, don’t see it with your girlfriend and tell her it’s one of your favorite movies.
RV_STUDIOS First, I must say English isn’t my native language and the writing is my poorest ability in the language test, so will be very difficult to explain deeply my idea. This movie has a big problem: politically correct, and this is probably, why your girlfriend can’t see until the end, but doesn’t mean that the movie is misogynist or Johnny. He is a complex character and the way he interact with women is beyond the misogyny. Women’s in the movie are backgrounds but its valid because the main character is him, Johnny, and even that, Louise and Sophie were very well constructed, you can see the fear, the boredom, the helpless and all this things are real and must be exposed in a film. Try to watch again, take it off the idea the journey is parallel with the misogyny, think more about how miserable he is with his life, with the society and how this affects his relationships. Btw and just for the fact, I’m a radical feminist and I don’t considered this is a misogynistic film, because is misunderstand and narrower what that concept means, also with patriarchy.

beautiful comment, sending love and continuous healing to u
Glad you're in a better place, mate. And The Thin Red Line is the most beautiful movie I've ever seen.
Beautiful comment Laurence. Wishing you the best wherever you are dear sir! ❤
One of the most well written movie characters of all time
funny given that the movie was mostly improvised
but I agree
@@stepanvalek3363 Yes and no. improvisation during rehearsals, then script based on that.
watch more movies
@@pingpxng I've seen over 5000 movies so far. Not enough?
I remember watching this on Film4. I had just woken from sleep and I was hooked. . .
I went and bought the DVD as I thought, I probably won't get to see this again. . .This was around the time that Film4 were showing extreme cinema.
I'm replying at the same time as I'm watching Naked on Film4. Mark the date when this is uploaded, pretty crazy.
Who else binge watch David Thewlis’ films? 🤚🏻
Something you recommend?

Gosh, this whole scene is briliant
HIS FACE AT THEN END OML
To use a musical analogy, he's like Half Man Half Biscuit meets Swans via Napalm Death.
That’s a fucking haiku.
🥰
he tried channeling Mark E Smith
You’re cool dude
He'll steal all the oxygen.

He's like if Bernard Black had even less of a moral compass.
I had mixed feelings about this movie. His character is so well-made but also so horribly unlikable as a person.
That's the point. A movie isn't obligated to hold its characters to a moral high ground.
@@bingo4519 thats a fair point
Why watch movies just to find people who you like? You've got your own life for that.
Everyone in this movie is a very flawed person. It's meant to be like in real life.
@@TheButterMinecart1 Except most of the characters act and speak like no one you see in real life.

I've never had an interesting conversation with anyone that starts out with them announcing that they're bored.

Brilliant effin' dialogue
