@IwasFRAMEDiTELLyou The NRA does not have power because of its arsenal. It has power because it's backed by a protected right in the constitution. Unless you think its best to just let the government have all the guns.
I'm physically disabled from birth and I also have a teaching degree. The thing that gets me about the whole school voucher program idea is that private and charter schools do not have to serve disabled students. In the grand scheme of history here in the U.S. disabled people didn't get to start going to school with non-disabled peers until my parents were children. It feels like one step forward and ten steps back. Vouchers are an attack on the civil rights of the next generation. It makes me so mad.
Ultimately, a lot of these people don't care. I've repeatedly pointed out that public schools are supposed to serve everyone and everyone should be served. But they just want public money to subsidize their child's private education or they just want to parrot right wing rhetoric.
@@loki2240 Makes sense. Unfortunately, it's becoming clear to me that the right wing wants to roll back disability rights across the board because of money. I've seen a push to go back to institutionalization versus community based services. There's more money to be made in institutionalization. It's very disheartening.

You guys got it right. Thank you. I hope people in Texas see this. Abbott is insisting on this scam being made the law here, too. 😮😮 Correct, and if you remove the public schools from a state, the jobs will leave soon thereafter.
I don’t have a problem with public funds going to Private schools AS LONG AS they have to meet all the same standards and requirements - including freedom of/from religion and free schooling.
We are well into the age of science and yet we are failing to provide our children with an adequate understanding of the basics of science we already have developed. If we are not the product of evolution from other apes then we don't know that the earth revolves around the sun, that the earth is round or that gravitational force attracts two bodies of mass toward each other. Our evolution from other, more ancient apes is something we understand based on the same standard of evidence as all those other theories. Also, this redirection of funds from the working class to the owning class is disgusting... I wish this were unique and unprecedented.
I'm halfway through the video and want to point out that any school being starved for resources is actually paying a huge amount of their income revenue for administration and all kinds of management that is not directly education, but everything else. What has happened with school budgets is that the administrative costs are through the roof and growing still while the classroom budgets are not.
We should give vouchers a fair opportunity to work nationwide for 10 years. If they fail, you've proved your point. I don't fear competition. It makes me better.
The competition is like a leg race where the wealthy get to start 15 yds ahead. Why do we need to test an unfair competition to learn how unfair it is? It's the starting premise.
Private schools in the US are dangerous as they are divisive. Imagine the extreme where every student and their parents choose their school with their bias excluding contact with others that can not afford or don't share that bias. It doesn't matter if your bias is right wing or left wing, religious or non religious, or rich vs poor. By attending private schools we limit who our children interact with on a daily basis. Often that gives the idea that the private school children are special, leading to comparisons but not understanding of each other! It is harmful to a diverse society to have segregation!
Hot take: Public education should be the only option. All private schools should be nationalised. They did it in Finland, and they top the world's education rankings, so it clearly works.
American politicians don't want that though, they have been committed to dividing up students since schools started desegregating. At the end of the day the cause of this is rooted in racism and classism. Similar to why Reaganomics destroyed free post-secondary education, America doesn't want an educated proletariat stirring things up.
Someone needs to apply to start a charter school for Islam there to expose their hypocrisy. Also, a school for secular humanism (read: "a normal school") would be nice to apply for as well, but make sure it explicitly says "secular humanism" all over the application but then the description needs to be any normal school curriculum
I'm not saying that I want the Catholics to have the money and that the school couldn't benefit from it, but public schools are awful just a waste of time that doesn't even help you progress in life.
The money should follow the kid, period. The schools, religious or not, have to abide by state criteria. Vouchers were created because the parents needed an option to public schools that wouldn't break the bank for middle and low income parents.
They were created to funnel public money into private hands and to take that money out of public schools, thereby weakening them. Republicans would then point at public schools and say, "See? Public programs don't work [after we sabotage them]!" It was always a con and the public was the mark.
No, they were created as a ploy to undermine public schools, so that Republican politicians could point at the damage they caused and say, "See, public programs don't work; we should privatize everything."
Vouchers were created to divert public money to private schools. There is a huge amount of nuance to this and every child deserves a quality education. Look at the mess we are in now from improperly educating children.

Yes and they would do stupid and horrendous things like every other large organization does.
The same could be said of their arsenal

School vouchers require parental involvement. This further punishes children with crappy or overwhelmed parents.
