Another wonderful reaction Your enthusiasm and energy is just great. You ‘re fun to rewatch Buffy with. You will receive all sorts of opinions of this season and the final 3. That’s one of the points. They are no longer in high school and all are facing life. It would be great going to class, trading barbs with Cordy, and fighting with good versus evil. Life does not present easy answers or questions. Your reactions are entertaining but please remember that the show at its core is the journey and attempt of Buffy to become a strong, independent, confident woman that has the capacity to give love , understand true forgiveness, and learn to love herself. That is the real struggle and keep that in mind when thinking about the story afterwards.
I believe the last scene in Hush where Reilly came to Buffy's dorm was an extended shot of them just sitting that was tacked on as a post credit scene. I believe that when the HD version came out that was on the DVD as a deleted scene. As someone who had who saw the original broadcast, I remember that end scene and the beginning scene from the next episode always seemed off to me, now I know why.
The music during the Polgara fight/sex scene was fantastic. Also, a call back to Faith "Fighting makes me hungry and horny." comment. Glad you caught that. When Faith first said that, Buffy didn't exactly agree, but she did a sort of look down when she denied the latter part. It totally does, but she was repressing that part of Slayerness at that time.
Buffy does that all the time, there is in S2 when she claims to never having played doctor (and Cordy says "oh right.."), then in S3 there are two instances, once with Ford where she claims that she listened to "when I touch myself" when moping over Ford but didn't know what the lyrics was about, then Faith with hungry and horny, here in S4 when talking to Eddie she pretends to "not watch porn" and changes it to "cutting way down on it". And every time this happens she does that special look :)
This was my favorite of your Buffy reactions so far. Your shock, and confusion, and relief were hilarious to watch. The cameo by Karma made it even better.
Man, there is nothing on the internet I like more than a good Buffy-rant by Cass!! She just made my sh@##y f'n week worthwhile. Loved the whole commandos-to-the-party one. Thanks Cass!
And I love how Cass goes into a 2-minute long breakdown of the thought processes that must be going on with each character then the show covers it all with two lines out of Willow's mouth. The writers definitely know what you're thinking and they definitely know what they're doing in this show.
This episode is about individualism; you hit the nail on the head when you noticed how Buffy talk, acts and dresses different than the rest of the soldiers. Even the name of the episode, The I in Team.
This past week I've been marathoning your videos of Hill House, then Bly, and now all of Buffy so far. You're very engaging to watch and it's a delight to see your reactions. ♥ And as someone who pauses a lot when I watch things I'm into, I totally feel you, it's super fun to see your thoughts along the way -- rather than having you miss things because you're talking over them.
Season 4 is my favourite. Not because of the main commando storyline, but everything else that happens with the Scoobies (that includes Spike in this case) and their lives is chef's kiss. And the college setting. Best of all the seasons. I think "mother" is code.
@@TheDemonicPenguin, you need to read Shelly's book. Dr. Victor Frankenstein was the scientist who created a creature from scavenged body parts and then brought it to life. All that happened to him was a result of his planned intent. So not a victim. Do you mean the monster that he created? That was not a victim, either, as it demonstrated volition and was therefore responsible for the consequences of its actions. Adam is not a victim, either. Instead, it is the result of Dr. Walsh's plans, though she could not have foreseen how those plans might be executed.
It's possible that the prototype demon that Walsh was working on was named Adam because he was the first of his kind. Also, I believe that the reason for the surprise ending was because the actress had been offered another role (I don't remember anything specific). Thus, plans changed, and the rest of the season had to be rethought, starting with the elimination of professor Walsh.
My understanding is that Season 4 is a lower ranked season by many fans, but all seasons have their strong points, so it is just personal preference. My ranking: 5 > 2 > 4 > 7 > 1 > 3 > 6. And while Season 6 is my least favorite overall, it has many great episodes/moments/plot lines that I love.
Note that the stitched-together guy in camo on the table may not have originally been a human named Adam. Given that name's association with Genesis, it might instead indicate that Walsh sees him as the first of a new breed (and perhaps herself as God).
It’s too bad she doesn’t upload Angel to UA-cam. BTVS and Angel are one big story the further you get into Angel. I think I would have stayed more into the channel.
Nah, I never have and never will have any interest in Angel. And I don't ever feel like I've missed anything. The attempted crossovers are the weakest part of Buffy going forwards.
@@NessOnett8 It goes beyond just simple crossovers. There are certain Buffy characters that get full story arcs and character development on Angel that you're missing out on. I still think Buffy is a way better show, but it's definitely worth it to get the full experience.
@@NessOnett8 I can appreciate that perspective, but there isn't a whole story of certain characters on BTVS w/out Angel and you miss entire meaning of scenes in BTVS without Angel. I've seen Angel and I didn't think it would make it less enjoyable if a reactor only uploaded Buffy but it does. I can't join everyone's patreon, but I do gift UA-cam channels, so I think YT is valid as well.
It's also a reference to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein": Frankenstein will not name his creation, who in turn says to his creator "I ought to be thy Adam", as in the Biblical first man.
This show does not draw thigs out more than absolutely necessary. When something's done, it's done. I love that they didn't draw the Initiative thing out longer - pretty much as soon as the story potential of them as super secret had been used up, the schoobies found out. And as soon as pretty much every drop of dramatic potential in having them as allies once discovered had been used up - they were shown to be "baddies". No filler, all killer.
Walsh was just surveilling Buffy covertly, then Riley was brought home. It confirms to Walsh how close Buffy & Riley have become and the complications that will likely arise with his loyalty.
While most of the Initiative guys were probably annoyed that Buffy was asking questions, the look on Graham's face seemed, to me, to show that he was amused.
Best part of this episode is Buffy outing Walsh on the monitors, although Walsh dying comes in a close second. I don't think I knew and/or remembered she checked for post credits on BtVS. There's one "during the credits" moment in S1, but that's it.
@@robinsonsarah143 I don't consider Walsh being dead a spoiler. Viewers are supposed to assume death. The spoiler would be saying she lived. And now I've stated both, so which is it going to be? 😁
Just a note on your 314 speculation at 3:33 - in the previous episode Ethan told Giles 'the underworld is being threatened by the Initiative, especially by something called "314."' I guess you missed that bit :P
Cass, your theories are hilarious😂 I really enjoy you trying to figure out what happens next, and then something entirely different happens and it makes you genuinely surprised. At the same time, you point out some really important things. Good job. I'm actually surprised you like this season so much. Not many BTVS fans do. But I think it's because you haven't seen the rest of the show yet and you don't have much to compare to.
S4 has a lot really good individual episodes. It’s just the season long arc isn’t as memorable as other seasons so people have a tendency to rank it lower in comparison. But we get something blue AND hush right next to each other ?
@@SelphieFairy I actually like almost all episodes in S4. My problem is the Initiative and Adam. It's an interesting concept for sure, but I find them boring and less complex compared to other BTVS villains.
I looked it up. The book never gives him a name but there is the quote where he says to His creator: “I oughta be thy Adam” in reference to Adam from the Bible

Walsh was supposed to be the big bad of the season but like Seth Green, Lindsay Crouse wanted to be released early because she had been offered a role. Joss Whedon agreed but it meant last minute rewrites, which is why the season suddenly changes direction as seen in this story. It would have been interesting to see what their original intentions were.
I think there are many people who see seasons 3 or 4 as the best in some regards... Buffy seasons are just so individual, every Buffy fan has their own favorite seasons and episodes :)
I think Cass likes him. And I like him, too. I think he has faults, but I think a lot of what plays out in their relationship makes sense and feels very much like a good human hurting to me. I don't think he's the person for Buffy, but I kind of wish he could have been.
I’m with you, four is a banger! I constantly shuffle around my favorite season between 4, 5, and 6. Right now it’s: 5, 6, 4, 7, 3, 2, 1 but all are exceptional except 1 which I would call above average.
The problem with Season4, and this isn't really a spoiler at this point since you literally just saw Walsh die. But the actress playing Walsh needed out of her contract for personal reasons. So that necessitated very late-stage writing changes for the rest of the season. She was intended to be the big bad. In the same way in Season2 "The Anointed One" was supposed to be the villain but then the actor hit puberty and they needed to pivot to Spike/Angelus.
no that is just a fan myth, Walsh was written to die in this episode once casting was done. There might have been an early draft of the script where she lived for a bit longer but it all changed when they cast Lindsay Crouse, when they got her they knew that they would only be able to have her in very few episodes so the script was rewritten at this early during production. *** spoliers *** remember that she comes back in episode 20 and 21, that would not have happened if she had "gotten out of her contract" or left in anger (another popular myth is that she clashed with Joss). The truth is simply that they got a famous actress with limited access to her time.
S4 is the oddest season on the show. That said, that is very pretty canine that you have there!S4 has one of my personal top 5's in terms of episodes, but I won't spoil, I will comment when you get to it.
One of the best examples of Sarah Michelle Gellar's acting is when they get down to the Initiative and she sees it for the first time and the sweeping shot shows this really lame little warehouse made to look like a military operation and she has to pretend to be impressed by it lol
Season 5 is my #1, season 4 is #2 for the high quality of the individual episodes. All that happened in this one should have been drawn out longer (same with the Oz story line) but Lindsay Crouse (Prof. Walsh) decided to exit the show early. The overall season arc was affected but it's still great. For a different view of the actress check out the "Columbo" episode 'Sex and the Married Detective' from 1989.
I wonder if the writers just like the number 14. Buffy and Willow's room number is 214, then the room of science evil is 314… I mean, 3x14 is a relevant episode, but is 2x14 something? It's a good one sure, but relevant?
Not defending forrests obvious jealousy but he does have a valid point. Buffys fighting prowess is irrelevant to the command structure.as it is in all military units.
Yes, I'm sure they were talking about grrr arg! I really hope she sees since it sort of becomes canon in the show. But she actually would have to sit through the credits to see it.
The thing you are missing with Willow is just the context of when this show was airing. It was a different time. Walsh was intended to be the seasons big bad but the actress quit for another gig forcing them to write her out here, which also changed the course of the season arc. The season arc really suffers for that which is why it's not generally peoples favorite. But there are a lot of great stand alone episodes in 4.
Also remember that Green was going to stay longer but his movie commitment changed just before filming started and that caused changes to the original story boarding. With the major cast changes on top of trying to establish Angel on that shows own, Season 4 of Buffy and 1 for Angel quite well
I really also think that this episode is a bit of a character assassination of Walsh that heavily implies that, instead of being the previously established highly intelligent if somewhat ruthlessly pragmatic leader of a top secret military science team, she's a creepy voyeur who is possessively jealous of Riley to the extend of attempting to murder his superpowered girlfriend in a really sloppily executed plan. JW also kills her mid-monologue which is by now his favourite way to smack down characters he wants the audience to think less of (Spike, Ethan, now Walsh). The best villains believe they are right, Walsh would have been so much better if she'd been written as steadfastly calculating to the end, using her world-renowned psychological acumen to test the Scoobies to their limit. Instead we get this.
@@OldManFerdiad Joss didn't write this episode. Honestly they just needed a quick way to exit her character, I don't think there was anything more to it than that.
The story that Walsh's actress had to leave early, forcing a rewrite of the season, circulates frequently around the fandom, but I've never heard an authoritative source (and the actress herself has denied it when asked, saying she did exactly as many episodes as she contracted for). There could be a source out there I haven't encountered, if so I'd be interested to hear more. But I suspect instead that the reason fans believe the story is that season 4's arc is generally less liked, so they're eager to believe something better was planned. Having Walsh survive seems plausible for that, since in a Frankenstein story you'd normally have the creator around to be tormented by the creature's rebellion, and with Walsh gone it feels like a piece is missing.
@@troikas3353 Each episode was broken by the writers as a group, often from an idea by Joss, but still as a group and monitored by him after, so you can't completely let him off the hook if you don't like something.
It's at the top of mine!!! I honestly can't wait till we get to the end of this season!! 😂🙌 Obviously I'm not going to spoil anything but the roller coaster starts now untill the end and I'm here for it 👍 So.... can you do another one tomorrow pleeeeeeeease 😂 x
I'm not even really a dog person, but the way your beautiful pooch communicated with you at the end of that video was just adorable - but that's off-topic! I have always found season 4 to be quite underrated, as we really see the characters grow into their new adult lives and how this affects the group dynamic. Seasons 2 and 3 are my absolute favourites, because they still have a darker vibe. Season 5 is the last "good" season, in my humble view, though it is uneven throughout. After that, the tonal shift kind of ruins the show for me, despite some decent standalone episodes. It just doesn't feel like the same series any longer and comic relief element becomes too prevalent.
if something is "Unsaid" then its irrelevant, if you expect other people to abide by your unsaid stipulations, then you are saying they should be mind readers, its silly and immature. Say what you mean.
Even to the last, Walsh's Theory of Mind about The Slayer is a complete failure. Seven or eight apocalypses thwarted(so far), scores of vamps and demons slain in nightly mortal combat for years...by a lone 5'4" 120 pound teenage girly girl who fights in heels and halter tops. As opposed to squads of strapping, 6 feet plus, drug enhanced special operations commandos armed with state of the art ranged weaponry..the top gun of whom has killed 17 "HSTs". So you send a couple of non -descript demons to murder her and blithely assume she's dead? She's lucky she didn't live to find out what a Slayer really is.
Been a Buffy-fan for about 20 years and only just realised that the 314 reveal happened in season 4 ep 13, which is just 314 backwards :')

I think that's the first time Riley's heard what I call Buffy's 'Slayer voice'. She's adorable... Until business calls!
Adorable Karma cameo :)
Karma is so beautiful and adorable! I loved her presence at the end of the video. :)
Doggo so cute. OMG.
Awwww I just love your puppy!
Love your dog, what great ears!
Season 4 is my favourite. Not because of the main commando storyline, but everything else that happens with the Scoobies (that includes Spike in this case) and their lives is chef's kiss. And the college setting. Best of all the seasons.
I think "mother" is code.
"Adam is the victim!"
I mean Frankenstein is a victim, so she's not wrong.
All these theories about Walsh just for that ending. 👀
I think he's named Adam as in the the first of a species, like Adam and Eve.
It's also a reference to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein": Frankenstein will not name his creation, who in turn says to his creator "I ought to be thy Adam", as in the Biblical first man.
@@OldManFerdiad Yeah this season really hits a lot of Frankenstein notes with Adam
Yay puppy in your closing comments!
I think the idea was for Walsh to try to build her own slayer, but the actress who played Walsh quit and so they needed a new big bad.
It's a trick question. We're always hungry. Maybe that's not a trick. Anyway, give us food.
Omg your dog is so adorable! ❤
To be honest I forgot how long Walsh stayed around and was alive this season.
Loved all the Walsh theories, given what was about to happen. :)
You were flummoxed at the end!
Riley calmly walking away while Walsh screams after him is also really cool.
Spoiler
@@robinsonsarah143 I don't consider Walsh being dead a spoiler. Viewers are supposed to assume death. The spoiler would be saying she lived. And now I've stated both, so which is it going to be? 😁
@@robinsonsarah143? Everything we're discussing here happened in this episode.
@@migmitI posted this before other comments
Professor Walsh watching them is so disturbing lol
Just a note on your 314 speculation at 3:33 - in the previous episode Ethan told Giles 'the underworld is being threatened by the Initiative, especially by something called "314."' I guess you missed that bit :P
Great reaction Riley is a badass soldier but Angel he will never be
Cass, your theories are hilarious😂 I really enjoy you trying to figure out what happens next, and then something entirely different happens and it makes you genuinely surprised.
@@alexie5201 Yeah, exactly. There's a ton of extremely good episodes. It's just missing the strong season arc, and it makes people overlook it.
Calling the monster Adam is a reference to Frankenstein. In the book, the monster is called Adam.
I could be wrong but I don’t believe that’s true. I’d have to re read it. I always thought it was a nod to “Dark Shadows”
I looked it up. The book never gives him a name but there is the quote where he says to
His creator: “I oughta be thy Adam” in reference to Adam from the Bible
I thought that was the name of the human he is made from?
No that wasn’t established in the show unless I’m misremembering. Victor Frankenstein is the name of the monster’s creator in the book
In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? No, never. That's one of my favorite books. It's called the creature and some other nicknames like fiend and devil.
Personally, I think ending an episode on "Mommy" can be a really good creative choice.
Anyway, you should have learned to trust the writers by now ;)
"Adam" was the first man, the creation of God. That's why she chose Adam as the name
Wait hold up. What post credit scene?? 2:54
There's no post credits scene, I think the person was referring to her missing the opening credits that added Riley
I think the demons don't like Adam/314 because he is the hybrid, a mixture of 2 warrior races, human and demon.
1:33 ..."I don't think he is gonna last beyond this season"... Poot Riley, nobody likes him.
For what it's worth I like him.
I think Cass likes him. And I like him, too. I think he has faults, but I think a lot of what plays out in their relationship makes sense and feels very much like a good human hurting to me. I don't think he's the person for Buffy, but I kind of wish he could have been.
Because he's 6 foot 5
how would Ethan be in 314 when he's the one that told Giles about 314 to begin with?
"I have a theory" ha ha!!
I don't believe there was a post credit scene (on episode 11)... Maybe trolls.
When I saw Adam it reminded me of DR Frankenstein
I’m with you, four is a banger! I constantly shuffle around my favorite season between 4, 5, and 6. Right now it’s:
5, 6, 4, 7, 3, 2, 1 but all are exceptional except 1 which I would call above average.
7 above 3 and 2 is wild, but hey everyone seems to have a different ranking.
I think your dog has camo.
*** spoliers ***
remember that she comes back in episode 20 and 21, that would not have happened if she had "gotten out of her contract" or left in anger (another popular myth is that she clashed with Joss). The truth is simply that they got a famous actress with limited access to her time.
Your dog is very cute. ☺
Buffy and Willow's room number is 214, then the room of science evil is 314…
I mean, 3x14 is a relevant episode, but is 2x14 something? It's a good one sure, but relevant?
Not defending forrests obvious jealousy but he does have a valid point. Buffys fighting prowess is irrelevant to the command structure.as it is in all military units.
comments full of spoilers. i pray you see this one first and stop reading until your moderator has cleaned up.
There aren’t any post credits in buffy the vampire slayer lol . Whoever told you that was messing with you.
Not true, there's one in season one where they're doing the weird play. And you might consider the Grrr Arghh jokes a form of post-credit scene.
Yes, I'm sure they were talking about grrr arg! I really hope she sees since it sort of becomes canon in the show. But she actually would have to sit through the credits to see it.
Messy miscommunication is a necessity for drama.
I'm here so early. I'm never this early😂😂
You have a theory huh
Yay love your videos ❤❤❤
It's at the top of mine!!! I honestly can't wait till we get to the end of this season!! 😂🙌
Obviously I'm not going to spoil anything but the roller coaster starts now untill the end and I'm here for it 👍
So.... can you do another one tomorrow pleeeeeeeease 😂 x
"I have a theory..." as with many of your theories... something isn't right there... but we love you for trying ❤
It could be witches.
No it could be bunnies
It is definitely bunnies!
or maybe midgets...
if something is "Unsaid" then its irrelevant, if you expect other people to abide by your unsaid stipulations, then you are saying they should be mind readers, its silly and immature.
Jurassic World stole their plot from Buffy Season 4. And didn't do it nearly as well.
I thought Buffy season 4 was a nod to The X-Files and Men In Black.
@Madbandit77 Jurassic World came out like, 6 7 years ago.
