My opinion (I'm sure there are many): The Buffy series neatly divides into two major arcs: seasons 1-3 are Buffy the teenager and seasons 5-7 are Buffy the adult. Season 4 is transitional, and 4x22 is transitional between this season and the next.

So, don't know if this has been pointed out already, but here goes: An interesting bit is how Willow, Xander and Giles "dies" in their respective dream. Because it matches the roles they played when they did that spell last episode. Willow was the soul, so she got her soul sucked out; Xander was the heart, so he got his heart snatched out, and Giles was the mind, so he got his brain cut out.
Just something I wanted to point out.

"I think I've learned how to steer by gesturing emphatically" might be my favorite line of Buffy that I forget about like two minutes after the episode ends so it hits every time.
Cool, making of detail for the episode, because most of their sets were pretty much on one soundstage, for a lot of transitions between locations they just built something for the character to walk through.

Without spoiling anything, Buffy is having a prophetic dream as slayers tend to do as alluded to by the same bedroom/bed that she and Faith were making in previous episodes. However, the spell they performed in the previous episode brought all of the Scoobies into the same dreamspace. The cheese man is just that odd, completely random element that appears in most dreams. He crosses over into each of their dreams because they are sharing the same dreamspace. I recommend that you give this a rewatch after you conclude the series because there are so many great moments here in this episode that really only make sense at the conclusion of the series. There are also many great video essays on youtube you can watch once your ready that attempt to break everything down.

Willow's "what you are" was not about either sexuality or magic; as revealed by her outfit when Buffy strips off her "costume," Willow is afraid that she's still no more than the shy nerd girl of the pilot episode. Xander's dream is all about his friends leaving him behind while he can't get out of the basement. Giles is all about his role as Buffy's father figure, and whether he's got any life outside of that. And Buffy's dream is... well, Slayers have prophetic dreams so we can't discuss it without spoilers. (Side note: Tara's appearance in Buffy's dream was unplanned, Buffy was supposed to talk to Faith in the bedroom and Angel in the desert, but they couldn't get the actors scheduled for some reason, so Tara was substituted.)

Just finished the video. Willow's dream was about her fear that she's still the nerdy girl from season 1. Someone she considers weak and has worked hard not to be anymore.
This is an episode you need to rewatch after finishing the series. There's stuff you won't understand until then.
Also, after finishing the series and rewatching this episode, you should watch TPN's Buffy Guide on this. The spoilery one. It goes really in depth on everything and what it all means, including the foreshadowing of the next 3 seasons.

Armin Shimerman (Snyder) did an amazing job recreating the tense scene from Apocalypse Now (The movie they were 'watching'). He immediately set the atmosphere just with his voice.
There is so much information in this episode about the characters, to the smallest details. A lot of things are being set up for the next seasons characterwise. It doesn't really spoil anything but when you go through the next seasons, if you pay attention, you'll have many aha-moments.

Tara only speaks for the first slayer in Buffy's dream--there's even a line where she says she was "borrowed", essentially saying that "Tara" appeared in Willow's dream, and then the first slayer used her voice and image to communicate in Buffy's.
This is definitely an episode that you get more out of in rewatches, and, personally, while I always had an affection for this episode (I have a soft spot for weird lol), I don't think I started to fully appreciate it till I'd finished the entire series. It's an episode that sort of at the "middle point" of the whole show, and looking back you can how elements in it kind of...echo out in both directions--calling backwards into the past to the beginning, while also foreshadowing into the future towards the end--which is super cool, but doesn't really come across till you've seen the entire picture lol. (Hope none of this qualifies as a spoiler, I was just trying to describe my personal experience with the episode, which might be different for others anyway. In any case, I apologize if it gives anything away--I don't THINK it does? But again, sorry if I'm wrong about that 😅)

    "That was a weird cutoff."
The scene beforehand exists partially because Joss didn't want credits playing over the dream sequences (it's also why there's no pre-title sequence.) Note that the cut happens pretty much as soon as the last credit has rolled. Given that the dreams were the point of the episode, they went for an abrupt cut over making the "falling asleep" scene any longer than it had to be.

Here's my take on the cheese man:
As Joss has said, he does represent the meaningless randomness of dreams, within the world of the show. But in a meta way, he also represents the way the show itself uses humor.
"I've made a little space for the cheese slices."
Even in serious moments, the show makes room for some of its campy, cheesy humor.
    "These will not protect you."
Xander frequently plays the role of comic relief, but this role doesn't make him immune to being hurt.
"I wear the cheese. It does not wear me."
The humor doesn't control the show. It serves to break up the serious and sometimes overly dramatic moments, but doesn't overpower them.
Finally, it's the sight of the cheese man that breaks Buffy out of the dream, and her humor is a vital part of her ability to save the day.

Notice the methods of each of their deaths. Willow was killed by having her breath taken from her, Xander his heart, and Giles his brain. These are the totem elements that each of these three represents to Buffy. Also, the last element of each of their deaths was them at their greatest fear.
Willow: It wasn't her clothes that Buffy stripped away from Willow, but her mask. Willow has grown into this powerful cool person with friends and interests. But when we first met Willow, she was a meek nerd. In her final scene before being "killed" She was stripped of the mask of coolness and returned to her nerd persona. That thing she feared people would realize was her true self. That which she was hiding from everyone else that Tara mentioned to her.
Xander: He is afraid of his aimless self. He has no apparent direction while his friends are heading towards something. Hence the Apocolypse Now dream about being in the military, gaining direction from enlistment that he feared his friends thought would be good for him, and his rejection of that when he said he is a comfortador and not a soldier. We have references to both his possession by a military costume and his costume for Mummy Girl coming back in his dreams. But the thing that killed him, was his fear of his father. There have been mild hints that Xander's home life was abusive, and this seems to confirm this.
Giles: We see Giles multiple times as a father figure in his dreams. He has been a surrogate father to Buffy, and Buffy is becoming an adult woman who it seems no longer needs him anymore, he is feeling lost in his role, Just as the 1st Slayer had no watcher, Buffy, he fears no longer needs him as her watcher. That is his fear that killed him.

counterpoint: the enjoining spell came out of a book, and it's rather specific to the slayer. it seems rather odd to think that the spell's been written down but for some reason never used before. more likely, other slayers have called on the power of the first slayer, in which case the first slayer may have haunted their dreams as well.

Half of it is a study on the evolution the charachters had up until this point ("fatal flaws" and insecurities included). Half of it is a foreshadow of what will happen, both in terms of actual events and in terms of themes that will be carried out through the show. Part of it is just the randomness of dreams. The way I understand it, the slayer is a human sacrifice, she's meant to be alone and to die to keep the evil spirits at bay. Buffy has refused to be alone, refused to die, for the first time in history 2 slayers are alive at once with Kendra then Faith, some powerful primal magics in the essence of the slayer passed on from generation to generation has been broken because Buffy is not alone.
I interpret this as the spirit of the first slayer, trying to protect what the slayer was first created to be. They also called on her spirit to join and fight with them in the enjoining spell in primeval, so she had been enlisted to join in a fight she had long since retired from.

A masterpiece of introspection but also the way it's filmed, incorporating the different genres of film: existential, mise-en-scene, horror, film noir. The first slayer took out each of the Scoobies based on their role in the spell. Willow was strangled stifling her magic, Xander as the heart had his ripped out and Giles got scalped, attacking his mind.

The Wizard of Oz is strong in this episode. For willow it played on her courage, for Xander it took his heart, for Giles it took his brain.
The first time I saw this episode, I almost didn't realise the guy with Riley in Buffy's dream was Adam. A lot of the dream content was prophetic (not just Buffy's)
Can't wait for the next episode, it's a bit of fun to open the season.

The way i always saw it:
To Willow: "I've made a little space for the cheese slices." Joss acknowledges the 'slices'of 'cheese' the show was known for
To Xander: "These… will not protect you."
No matter how cheesy it gets, it won't protect you from the harder hitting moments
To Giles: "I wear the cheese. It does not wear me."
Acknowledgment that Josh is in control of the cheese Factor
To Buffy: (shakes the cheese slices, then retreats).
'I am here, accept it '

Why this never showed up in my notifications is beyond me. I always look forward to reactions to this episode, so I'm sad I missed it for two weeks.
Each dream not only has a theme to it, but what very few people ever talk about is how they shows how the characters view each other and themselves. Willow hated who she was in S1 and that is why she lovs the magic so much. Xander has a whole journey trying to get away from his basement, which is a place he finds himself stuck in. Giles wants a life away from being a watcher, but also has strong ties to Buffy. Both hold him back from said life he feels he could be living. And Buffy always feels alone, even without her friends and family. It's the nature of being a slayer, so with her friends its better., and that's why her dream is about finding them.
The cheese man, as Joss said, meant nothing, and just represented the strange happenings in dreams. While I agree I also believe there is more to that. I see him as the trigger that could alllow a person to know they're dreaming. Buffy is the only one who reconizes it and that is why The First Slayer doesn't get to finish it's job with her. Once she knows she is dreaming she can fight back in a way that allows her to wake up. Not the fighting in the desert, but the, "Are you quite finished?" moment. The others assumed their dreams were real until the end. Even as Giles realized who was after them, he didn't reconize he was dreaming.
I found it a bit funny that she said she was going to go with it then kept being so confused over trying to figure it out.

While Buffy was airing, I was a member of the Official Buffy the Vampire Slayer Club.
There was the magazine, which you could buy without being a member, but you got sent as part of your paid membership.
I think it was in there that Joss talked about having all of season 5 mapped out and a good deal of season 6 by the end of the 3rd season, but he had no idea what he was doing with season 4. He had come up with Adam and made some references to him in season 3, but it wasn't until slightly after the middle of shooting season 4 that he finally decided what was going to happen. He apologized and said that was why the season seemed to not have focus, because it didn't really have a direction, other than Adam, and he didn't even know exactly how that would play out.
Parts of this episode and the season 3 finale make more sense as you go through season 5, and yes, things spill into seasons 6 and 7 a bit, but many of the references and setup was for season 5.
Just a suggestion, have a tissue box ready for season 5. Happy, sad, shocked... I think you'll need it. Most people do!

I spent decades trying to figure out the Cheese Guy. So things dealing with cheese on rewatches like Buffy turning into a rat or Riley telling Buffy he likes cheese got collated as potential clues. Then someone stated in the comments of a reaction video that the writers wanted something completely meaningless in the dreams so they added the Cheese Guy.
Letting you know so he won't haunt you the way he haunted me. But so many other Easter eggs and foreshadowing in this episode. It will seem very different on future rewatches once you know what's coming. Yes, that was the same bed she was making in Faith's coma dream, for instance. And there's a connection to her previous shared dream and future events.

Cass, since you said you like to experience Buffy just as the people who saw it on air in the first run, I will let you know that season five was originally the final season of Buffy. The show premiered on the WB network and going into season five the show had not been renewed by WB for a sixth season. This might help you wrap your head around some of the episodes.

The question though is when did they know the series wasn't going to be renewed for SE6 exactly.
Most show don't normally find out if they are being renewed or cancelled for the next season until a handful of episodes before the final.
So it's possible they had no idea the series was ending until around episode 5x16, giving them time to wrap everything up ... or ... they were given a heads before they began writing SE5.

@@charmedoriginal5923 I am of an age where I saw Buffy on air. We knew as viewers that there wasn't going to be a season six before season five aired or very early in season five. It's such a shame more actors couldn't reprise their roles. There are rumours that Whedon wanted Cordelia and Faith to appear, plus Angel in Buffy's desert scene to speak for the First Slayer.
I found the concept of the First Slayer intriguing and it made me want to know more Slayer lore. Don't know why Buffy was ragging on her hair though; I thought it looked awesome.

I commented on your last one that I would add a comment on this reaction, while avoiding any hints (I hope!)
S4E21 showed us what seemed to be the "deus ex machina" that could get the scoobs out of EVERY situation. Simply, "Scoobies Assemble!" and defeat every potential enemy. So the way I interpret this episode is that it is the powers that be telling them that they cannot draw on this superpower without repercussions. Each character has a nightmare that corresponds to their role in the "Super Buffy". This is as close as Joss ever got to a David Lynch vibe, in my opinion.
Also, Xander's dream was a really cool reveal of the way that the set was laid out to film the show. And if you have never seen "Apocalypse Now," that scene with Schneider is an homage to an iconic scene from that movie.
Giles has yet another musical moment!
Seeing Adam as a human was interesting. Buffy rejecting the First Slayer's demands to have no friends was wonderful, and I loved her reaction.
Thanks for carrying us along on your first viewing of this wonderful series!

Some of this is prophetic, as are the shared Buffy/Faith dream sequences in Season 3 and 4. You will not be able to fully understand all of this until you've completed Season 5. You could rewatch the shared Buffy/Faith dream sequences and this episode now, if you want to have the prophecies embedded into your mind as preparation for Season 5. But it's not really necessary to fully understand and enjoy Season 5. Alternatively, you could go back and rewatch this stuff after you've completed Season 5, it's quite rewarding. In any case, with both Seasons 3 and 4 having multiple prophecies aimed at Season 5, you can guess how "important" Season 5 is going to be. It was originally planned to be the epic final Season of Buffy.

That have always been a rumor among fans but have never been confirmed by any one at Mutant Enemy.
