Monitor Audio is fairly underrated as a brand. I had Silvers 8s years ago and decided to upgrade to Spendor A7. After a few months, I sold the A7's and kept my Silvers 8s which were less than half the price.
Great review Paul, thank you. I got a pair in Ash finish last summer powered by my Audiolab 6000a, very pleased with the whole setup. They did take a good while to run in though, sounded a bit muted at first but loosened up.
I hope this is the beginning of the return of the 8 inch mid woofer as was the standard in days gone by. Some of those old guys knew what they are about.
The step baffle circuitry I think it is called in modern xovers means the industry can manipulate the sound they can get from small diameter midbass drivers in turn cutting the cost of speaker manufacturing overnight, but still charge a fortune for the nicely made highly tuned slim profile cabinets the industry now pump out, I also use said slim profile modern M A floorstanders & they do sound nice, but selling only 8" versions as a minimum in the industry more than likely will kill off the side earner subwoofer industry & will still cost the price of an internal organ, I'm planning to build a pair of 8" 2 way standmounts in the near future as I can't wait any longer for the industry to change back
Wonderful review. I agree with all your observations. I have a pair of white Silver 100 7Gs, and I absolutely love them. They replaced a pair of towers which I really enjoyed the sound of, but these just sound better, have better bass (cleaner and tighter, but just as deep), and I love the tweets. They fit our main listening room on the main floor and get used for hours daily for music and 2-channel TV viewing. I have the towers down in our theatre space. Another pair of bookshelves comprise my office setup (in this case Q Acoustics 3020i units using my Scarlett 2i2 as a DAC, and an Audioengine N22 A/B desktop amp (which drives them fine, but looking to swap that with the NAD 316bee v2 eventually). Really enjoy your thoughtful reviews. Thanks for sharing!
Nice review, Paul. I've had the 6g model for 5 years, powered with Audiolab 6000a + 8000p in pre/power mode. Still love them, fantastic value for money.
@@ricstars95 I not really known many warm amplifier. What I did was to get an neutral amplifier with warm DAC like AKM chip, the treble was smooth and clear.
Thank you, Paul. A very interesting comparison with good speakers. I have although many positiv experiences with Monitor Audio speakers. I like their sonic character. Greetings to you 👍👋😊
i have had a pair of monitor audio gx200 gold speakers for some years (also the black piano). Added isoacoustic feet, after talking with MA. And i wouldn't wanna trade them for anything. i LOVE these speakers. i do have the previous tweeters, which do sound more natural, ribbon type? if you can get those, highly recommended. i play anything from classic to symphonic metal. It just plays it all:) i would expect the Silvers to sound great as well.
Try moving and listening, moving and listening. That's the best way. Trust your own ears. If I tell you Xcm from the wall and then you can't hear any difference, then what's the point? So spend a bit of time experimenting with your system in your room with your music. Tweak.
I am very interested in these speakers. HOWEVER, I have a 1976 Harmon Kardon 730 dual powered receiver running 40 watts per channel. I have a lively 20x20 living room with a high ceiling. I listen mostly to Singer-Songwriter cuts with occasional ventures into 1970s Rock, and for the most part I do not listen with the volume high. Is my amp powerful enough to drive these speakers?
From everything I've read about the h/k 730 and having heard a few other h/k models of that era over the years, it should power those speakers quite adequately to a moderately high volume level.
@@YamFZR93 Thanks for that. I actually ended up buying a pair of vintage a/d/s L880 that I heard at a vintage auto shop. Blew me away. Bought them on the spot.
Our man in Havana / no sorry I meant hifi . Trusted refined and an all round good guy , not to be sniffed at in these days of conflicting advice . Kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍
Certainly a good speaker 🔊 to include for those auditioning quality speakers up to £1,000. Final choice is subjective & dependent on amplifier synergy & personnel music 🎶 presentation tastes
So they are all good speakers, but over all the Martin Logans win? Which is good as I have ML 35XT's in my den system. I love them. For some reason, the Monitors kind of remind me of the ADS speakers from the 80's. That's a good thing.
I didn't quote a dollar price, I quoted a pound sterling price. My guess is that you're paying for Monitor Audio's distribution costs, therefore (the same thing occurs with Rega kit in the USA) so that's a factor to consider if you're interested in these speakers.
What gave you that crazy idea? I've known audiophiles who have trouble *reading*, never mind spouting Shakespearean stanzas. I personally use words to form images in your head because I can't play the component on UA-cam. Firstly, I risk copyright strikes if I ever did play music here but, more importantly, UA-cam's sound filtering and processing transforms the sound. So you are no longer hearing the item in question. More than that, even if UA-cam didn't process and filter, you would only be hearing the sound output from the device you're listening to (i.e. phone, TV, etc) nothing else. So what's left? Your friendly, neighbourhood Audiophile Man, that's who. If all I did was say that turntable X was 'great', amplifier Y was great, speakers Z were great and turntable A was bad, amplifier B was bad and speakers C were bad...then I'd soon hear about it from viewers on this channel, I'm sure. Thanks for your comment, thanks for watching and don't worry about it. Just enjoy the vids. Alternatively, choose another channel that uses words of one syllable ;)

I find the Monitor Audio Silver 100 7g Speakers clear with lots of detail and bass

Same system bud
Well done to M.A. who built a bookshelf speaker with an 8 inch woofer!!
Dear Paul, Thank you very much for this , again, excellent video. Such a pleasure to receive information this way. UK 12 points.
Love my MA Silver 500. Yes bass rocks. One of the better speaker deals available.
I hope this is the beginning of the return of the 8 inch mid woofer as was the standard in days gone by. Some of those old guys knew what they are about.
My late dad always said if the woofer wasn't 12" it's not a woofer .

Wonderful review, you Sir are very good at what you do!
How are these at low to very low volumes? I'm too old for a pair of speakers that needs 90dB to sound good.
I enjoyed the review Paul. I would like to see the flagship Monitor Silver 500 review and your thoughts.
Danke Paul! Überlege ernsthaft, sie zu ordern, sofern es sie in Germany gibt!

With 2 subwoofer setup would recommend these in 5.1 or would the silver 50’s a better choice ?
I do love this speaker even more after I paired it with Topping E70 Velvet. Before I get the DAC, I was complaining that it was too bright.
can you recommend amp to balance any perceived brightness?

How was the bass of the Spendor compared to the 100’s? I don’t know if you mentioned that specifically
How would you compare them to the B&W 706 S3? Which one do you think sounds better? Thank you!!
Wonder how they stack up against my Triangle Genese trios?
How close to the wall could you put these before sound suffers? Thanks

Motion XT B100 are double the price of a pair of MAs so I expect them to win :D

You need a new mic.
Just saying.
It’s fine now. Settings thing. Ta.
Check your price. What you quoted is half the price. They are sold in pairs for $1499. Us dollars

@The Audiophile Man your right it's about 1k in us dollars so basically there a 400 to 500 dollar shipping charge. Wow
