I don't remember a lot of The Waltons' episodes, as I have NOT seen any of them since my teenage years, and I'm 62 now. I only remember snippets of some episodes.
I think that was the episode when Ike had his heart attack. Ben and jim Bob made molasses and put it in the store to be sold since sugar was scarce. The kids were keeping the store open while Ike was in the hospital.
There was Nurse Nora's horse she rode, a dog Miss Emily received, "although she wanted a bird", there was a caged canary in The Recluse, Blue the mule made his debut in The Odyssey, the cat in The Loss, the chickens Jeffery loved to mess around with. I noticed in season 9, there were no animals on set at the Walton barn, why? Thanks again Judy.
Anytime animals were on set there were costs involved so it was likely a way to save money to not have animals seen if they weren't needed specifically for the storyline.
Blue, Reckless etc al...when a storyline features a specific animal ( who could forget JimBob's adorable guinea pig-Porthos? I still tear up when he dies 😢 ), I love every moment❤
Just saw the class reunion episode where actress Lynn Carlin (Sarah Griffith) played one of John's classmates with a different name! Saw actress Linda Purl as several different characters, also. Wouldn't have been so obvious if The Waltons wasn't on every day!
That is SO funny! They actually brought a camel to set to spook Blue. The animals brought a lively realism to the Walton homestead. Loved this Behind the Scenes. Thank you, Judy.

Coincidentally I saw the episode this morning about the hunt where the bear attacks John and John Boy then kills it. I thought to myself then I’ve gotta ask Judy about the bear. I know it was real and I know bears are trained a lot for movies but was wondering how Ralph Waite felt about wrestling with a live bear! Yes, so many animals for sure...they’re quite amazing. Also, the family cow pet, Chance. So this was interesting...thanks Judy. ❤️
I think with Rover being a pet of Jim Bob’s, it said a lot about him. Like with Erin and Lance, the fawn, symbolized a lot of things which she was. Peacocks usually symbolize power, strength, divinity, confidence, uniqueness, new beginnings and so much more !! Jim Bob was a dreamer and wanted to fly airplanes, wanted to see the world and those traits and qualities pretty much fit him. We all know he was different, his confidence was pretty admirable when it came to certain things. As well as his bravery, and you can just tell he was just committed to getting something done at times. He really surprised people at times, especially his family and proved he was capable of certain things. They can also live up to 40-50 years in domesticated/captive areas or environments, so who knows Rover might still be alive !! 🦚🦚🦚🦚
Thank you Judy! As always a very enjoyable video bringing back memories of the show. I know you said there were many you didn't get to, but i remember (not the episode's name) but one where it was either Ben or Jim Bob (I think Jim Bob) captured a Hawk and put it in a cage, and "Grandpa" finally convinced him that it wouldn't be happy in captivity and should be set free. Just ONE MORE episode of Will Geer's "Sage, Grandfatherly Advice" on that wonderful show!
That's so remarkable that blue was scared of camels. Our neighbor had llamas and when my horse 1st saw them I was surprised he wasn't scared. Instant friendship. Cant say the same for runaway Guinea fowl that invaded the coral. Good memories.
When you mentioned the mule was scared of camels I was also like "HOW did they figure that out? Take him to the zoo or something?" LOL LOVE the animals on the show.
Judy I am enjoying the stories of behind the scenes. The Walton's was one of my father's favorite shows. While in his 80s he was so fond of the times that the show was all about. It reminded him of his youth. So happy I can watch them over and over. My sister and I rode our goats all the time, what fun
I saw a blooper with Recklace once when the kids were pulling him up in the Tree House. John boys tells the kids to stop hanging him from the tree like an armament with his Balls. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Right. It was from an episode when someone wants Reckless up in the treehouse so they rig a sling to lift him up. Richard did that outtake on one shot.
Thanks Judy! I love all the animals in The Waltons ❤️🐾 The Reckless dogs, raccoon, Elizabeth’s calico mama cat and her kittens.. so sad when mama cat passed. 😿Chance the cow, Blue the mule, Rover the peacock, the fox 🦊 I’m glad Ben let him go. Mama did good convincing on reasons to let him go.. I remember when Mama and Elizabeth and Jim Bob got lost in the woods. The ran into a snake. Olivia knew he was not poisonous.. there was a bear 🐻 in that episode too along with the Hunt. Daddy did good acting with that bear.. he almost was a goner.. thanks to John Boy he was okay.. so many good ones with animals thanks for sharing ❤️
I liked the episode when Johns friend from the service come visit the Waltons.I felt so bad when Johns friend excellently shot reckless.I thought the touching part was when Jason,Johnboy and John were looking for reckless. Then Jason started to call reckless and then took his harmonica and started playing it and that's when he found reckless injured and alive.I thought that was touching when the Walton children were comforting reckless.
I taped an episode this morning I wasn't able to get it all maybe about 30 minutes of it haven't watched it yet but Jean Marsh was in it an episode talking about Germany, She is an awesome person from everything I know of her she's another of my favorite Actresses along with you.
Thanks Judy, I just watched the reunion on Stars in the house you just aired over the weekend. Good show, I enjoyed seeing Richard, Michael, Eric, Kami and you. Was thinking while I watch that Michael is a year younger than Tom Bower who played your husband, that had to seem a little weird. Don't forget Jim Bob' s little class mascot, Chance, the snake and bear in the episode "The Search". Jimmy Fortune made a guest appearance on the show you did over the weekend, a saw him on Country Family Reunion a few years ago and he told about when first met his wife. That was a funny story. Take care, stay safe and GOD bless.
I just saw the one today . The car was a lemon Ben had sold. That was too funny, with Erin steering, Ben standing on the bumper, and ole Blue pulling it, lol.
How funny to learn that Blue the mule was afraid of camels!! I love that the animal handlers brough a camel in just for that scene! Can you talk about the episode from Season 4, The Search? I would love to hear more about that episode!
The gypsy episode they had that dog too, they thought the dog was killing chickens, when they were going to shoot it turned out to be a fox instead, what was the name of the dog they had? cant remember another one of my fav all time episodes, part 1 and part 2.
Judy, thank you so much for sharing these stories. Like the rest of us, I have had a hard time lately. I am Marys age, so it has been many years since I have even seen the show. This brings back fond memories of when I was a little girl watching it. I however do have the Ma and Pa Walton doll, Mary Ellen and John Boy doll, and Grandpa and Grandma dolls in great condition from then. LOL. I hope if they come out with a remake of the dolls, they will include the whole family. Also, I hope to be able to get the entire series one day. Take care and stay safe.
Loved this!! My favorite animal show was MaryEllen and the tadpoles. When someone says Reckless or Blue the mule you think of the Waltons they were par of the family and Chance the cow especially in the Homecoming. Thank you for sharing.! Be well 🤟
Remember John-Boy yelling at Chance in the opening scene of The Homecoming? "You think you're some kinda rabbit? Getting outta the barn and running up in the hills?!!!"
I liked the scene in "The Carnival " when the monkey showed up outside the bedroom window upstairs where Elizebeth slept . John Boy had just read a story about Goblins to her, and she thought it was a Goblin. John Boy came back into the room to find out what was going on , and he didn't believe it because the monkey had left , He told Elizebeth to go back to bed.
I have been binging the series and I can tell you about Blue. Blue became a part of the family because John Boy was going up to an abandoned cabin to write in peace and on his way there he stopped to visit with Granny Ketchum who gave Blue to John Boy. This was the episode (season, 2, episode 2) where John Boy delivered Sissy Spacek's baby. Thank you so much Judy for doing this channel.
Thanks!!! This was great!!! The story about Blue being afraid of camels was funny!!!! I'm still watching the reruns and the stories behind the episodes makes me laugh because I'm catching what you have talked about!!!! Can't wait to see more!!!!!
Wow. Grenada. Been there, done that place. Wasn't anything close to a vacation, though.... On a lighter note: I love animals, so this segment was particularly heartwarming for me - especially the story about the little porcupine! I believe they are nocturnal and their vision is limited during daylight. Your heel probably substituted for its mom's hind leg and was probably used by the little guy for security as well as navigation! Speaking of wranglers, I actually knew of a prop animal trainer out in Calabasas that was closed down for cruelty/poor condition issues but can't for the life of me names or details. Wonderful segment, made my day!
@@judynorton2598 Same. When I was on the job, that was on of the three things I gave no quarter on - child abuse, spouse abuse and animal abuse. You took a ride with me to jail. The county I worked was a poor county, and we had more than a few cases of neglect, especially horses and mules...I used to haul bales of hay in my patrol Bronco a lot of times on my own dime to try and stave off malnutrition. Other times, I had to get a seizure warrant and a trailer. Sad all the way around...
I like that old mule. Animals can be so funny and entertaining. Glad the animals were used for the show. I saw the outtake of the fence post being knocked over. it was funny.
I remember Erin and Ben seen riding Blu, in the episode “The Runaway”. I can imagine how many times it might have taken to shoot the scene, with the two of them riding the mule, while Mary Ellen and Jason running forward at the same time
I always wondered how they got that mule to spook! He was as bomb proof an equine as I’ve ever seen! I mean, the way the children with run around him, screaming and yelling, spraying him with a hose, and all kinds of other craziness, and that mule just stood there! So funny!
Blue was given to John Boy when he took that time to go to the cabin up in the mountain when Sarah Jane was pregnant and giving birth. That elderly lady (who had all the herbs) who died gave John Boy Blue...so how could grandpa have ridden him? Maybe she had loaned him out to grandpa all those years ago? LOL!
I am just so fascinated with anything having to do with the Waltons. Sure wish there were good family-oriented shows....like this one....on TV today! Keep it up, Judy.♥️
I recall in Mary’s book she related a story where one of the larger animals (I believe Chance or perhaps it was Blu) stepped on her barefoot and stood on it during the filming of an entire scene. That must have hurt.
Always wanted a horse and chickens, so watching the waltons with all the animals was so great ,I also loved watching grizzly adams, the waltons and grizzly adams was set in such a different time that just fits in life as us folks that like the earlier part of that era

Judy, I am as big an animal lover as I am lover of the Waltons. In fact, I once scored 100% on a quiz to name the WALTON animals. Reckless was always my favorite, and frankly cannot remember any episode he wasn’t in, including one where he climbed up the ladder to the treehouse. I really enjoy your behind the scenes chatting, and hope you enjoyed your time on the Waltons as much as you appear to have, even with it being a job. I’ve seen every episode you mentioned, but now when I rewatch the episode of the saddle on Blue, I’ll have a hard time not thinking about the camel!! Thank you, Judy. You are awesome.
I have three questions: First, are any of the blooper reels that you've mentioned available for you to show us? Second, what is the wooden structure immediately behind the fireplace in the Walton house? It appears to be pentagonal-shaped. Sometimes it has a calendar on it. It's too short to cover a chimney pipe and seems out of place. Was it something moveable so that camera shots could be taken from that direction? Third, could you explain how contracts and pay worked for The Waltons? Not necessarily for you specifically, but that whole subject is quite a mystery to people not involved in the industry. Thank you so much for each video - the memories and explanations that you share are always interesting!
One one of these type videos, someone touched upon some of the odd things in the house that were just to hide cameras and camera men etc......I forget which they talked about. I was always bothered by how dirty the walls and wooden cabinets and trim looked for so long especially the Kitchen cabinets.....LOL OCD.
@@marymulrooney1334 omg funny u mentioned that, Yantze's cabin always scared me the most, my OCD had shivers literally when they showed his filthy place.
@@marymulrooney1334 oh l thought that the dirt always made it look so real to life. My Grandparents on my mothers side had a large family like the Walton’s family. But my Grandparents had 16 children and most were born in the 1930s. Being that most woman had good sized families back then there was a huge amount of time spent on just preparing three meals a day. Can you imagine the cleaning up afterwards alone?! Wow!… my Grandmother was my hero. And then there was the laundry and the bathing of the children. In those days most people had outhouses and no hot water heater’s. At least that’s how it was for my Grandma. She had to heat huge pots of water on the stove to clean and wash all she had to do!!! Needless to say or maybe not so needless because you don’t seem to understand how difficult it was for a mother to keep a house clean back in those days. I’m sorry but I couldn’t be more proud of how hard my Grandma had it and how well she took care of her family even if there was dirt around the light switches wainscoting and floors!!!! She was and still is a super hero in my book!!! Always will be DIRT N ALL!

@@janeiwasduncan8463 there really is nothing quite like walking around with peacocks whilst they are doing their call. So awesome.
I remember ducks at Drucilla's pond, the hawk, and the rattlesnake during John Boy's mule race as a few more.
Of all the animals on the show, I best remember Yancy's turkey Isabella. That was from one of the Thanksgiving specials and how he raised her from an egg ;-) I have all the shows on DVD so I go back to them from time to time :-D
I don’t remember that episode. Did they have the turkey for Thanksgiving ??
Yep... and he was afraid it was dinner - but it wasn't.
@@sking2173 Isabella was secretly switched out with a store bought turkey by good ol Doc Jones. This was one of the special TV shows after the series had ended.

Loved watching Blue win the race!!
Yep, he did good!
Great conversation. I remember the episode about the wild mustang and grampa branded him to be free.
Right!
Yes! Beautiful animal
Old blue!
I was always impressed at the interaction of Mary Ellen and John Curtis. It always seemed so natural.
Thank you.
Do you keep in contact with the little boy who played John Curtis Jr? I always thought he was so cute.🥰
I liked all the Animals and the Raccoon Ben had to let go ..Also i liked the one when John boy helped get the little Cow back 😊 thanks Judy ! 🌼🌸
Glad you enjoyed this.
Always had crushes on Mary Ellen and Erin and Cindy as well 😊
🥰
Been waiting for this affectionate look at the animals in the series. Enjoyed the back story about blue and the camel! Who knew? Thanks Judy!
I read that somewhere. I own the book,Goodnight John Boy. Not sure if that's where read that tho.
@@midgie4410 I love that book! I have it in front of me right now because I was curious if it talked about the camel; I just checked, and it does mention a camel and how the substitute mule was afraid of it. They had to use a substitute mule because Blue was stubborn and wouldnt move.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved all the animals and especially Maude and her goat.
Myrtle the goat.
I loved how Grandma came around to the goat saying it was sensitive and needed to have attention paid to it.
"The Thoroughbred" has always been one of my all time favorite episodes! Thanks for sharing your memories!
My pleasure! I'm going to do a segment about that episode soon.
That porcupine sounds adorable! I'm trying to envision a little cute prickly ball running to catch up with the kids as they walked. Thst must have been fun! 🐕🐮🐷🐒🐺🐪🐇🐿🐔🐤
Animals bring so much into our lifes and teach us so much. I loved all the animals especially the ones we had.
I'm Anita; I remember as a girl on the farm, we had 3 pigs. Dad said; "Don't you kids name the pigs and get attached to them". We still wanted to name them but he did. Dad called them; Sausage, Bacon, and Ham
@@robertbarger6244 Your dad had a sense of humor. Lol
Thank you Judy for the comments. "The Waltons" is still one of my favorite shows!
loved the animals especially chance
I really liked the chickens, Blue and Reckless, and Chance...Liked hearing about all the animals...they make the farm feel more real.
It was great to have that touch of realism at a movie studio set :)
I thought Blue was left to JohnBoy by Granny Ketchum after she died from influenza.
Thanks for that info.
yes he was...
Yes, that's what I was thinking. Grandpa must have ridden a different mule. They wouldn't have had Blue for Grandpa to ride.
You are correct on that!
Which actress played her?????
Reckless, and Chance were my favorites 🐕🐄
This was a fun episode! I love hearing about all the animals. Whoever came up with that question - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi
I don't remember a lot of The Waltons' episodes, as I have NOT seen any of them since my teenage years, and I'm 62 now. I only remember snippets of some episodes.
Oh, dear lady, you need to catch up. Get a cup of tea, put your feet up, and enjoy a few episodes🎈🌷
I remember when Jimbob sold Blue, then bought him back again, cause he realised he needed him to make molasses.
Oh yea definitely remember that one Tammy
I think that was the episode when Ike had his heart attack. Ben and jim Bob made molasses and put it in the store to be sold since sugar was scarce. The kids were keeping the store open while Ike was in the hospital.
Sweet
Cute.
Oh boy!!!! Video time!
The Canary was a gift for grandma....i believe she named him Caruso
Anytime animals were on set there were costs involved so it was likely a way to save money to not have animals seen if they weren't needed specifically for the storyline.
Blue, Reckless etc al...when a storyline features a specific animal ( who could forget JimBob's adorable guinea pig-Porthos? I still tear up when he dies 😢 ), I love every moment❤
So glad you have enjoyed all the animals.
Watching The Waltons now on INSP. Olivia is playing matchmaker for Sarah and Eb.
You're welcome.
I remember Elizabeth having a cat called Calico, which died
Broke my heart!!
Yes - in The Loss.
Yes she died giving birth so 😢
I never heard that blue afraid of camels? That’s odd! Thanks Judy for sharing!
You are so welcome
Camels look funny and make odd noises ..and scare horses ( and mules ) 😀🎵😀

I never realized there were that many animals but as you reminded us all of them ...a light went on. lol I couldn't believe when Grandpa jumped onto the back of Blue being the age he was. Then him and John Boy rode off down the rode an away for Ike Godsey's store. Great times for all.🦉🦚🐓🦃🦅🦆🐟🐇🐄🦝🐱🙊🦊🐻🐸🐴🐒🐕🐖
He didn't wrestle with a real bear - it was a bear suit - and I believe the real bear was stock footage intercut with the fake bear.
@@judynorton2598 ..well I'm excellent filming..I was sure it was a real bear! Thanks.
@@judynorton2598 I just watched The Hunt this morning (9/3/22) and was wondering the same thing...thanks!
Thank you for sharing that.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
That's so remarkable that blue was scared of camels. Our neighbor had llamas and when my horse 1st saw them I was surprised he wasn't scared. Instant friendship. Cant say the same for runaway Guinea fowl that invaded the coral. Good memories.
Harry Harris claim to fame was his name showing up on gravestones in some episodes. :-)
Lol ya know I remember that too 😂 the one where Ben makes the bench for the special veteran event and Grandma has an awesome moment reminiscing?
When you mentioned the mule was scared of camels I was also like "HOW did they figure that out? Take him to the zoo or something?" LOL LOVE the animals on the show.
I know! Wonder if they experimented with different animals, or it was a happy accident to find out.
Judy I am enjoying the stories of behind the scenes. The Walton's was one of my father's favorite shows. While in his 80s he was so fond of the times that the show was all about. It reminded him of his youth. So happy I can watch them over and over. My sister and I rode our goats all the time, what fun
How cool.
I saw a blooper with Recklace once when the kids were pulling him up in the Tree House. John boys tells the kids to stop hanging him from the tree like an armament with his Balls. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOLOLOL ...
Judy, did you have any part of hanging Reckless up by his nads ??!
Right. It was from an episode when someone wants Reckless up in the treehouse so they rig a sling to lift him up. Richard did that outtake on one shot.
I remember Johnboy getting Blue in the episode where he delivered the baby.
Thanks for that.
You’re welcome. Thank you !
Yes, that was a sweet moment.
Excellently shot Reckless?
Thanks for sharing your memories and all the acquaintances that you’ve picked up along the way. You’re a true joy.
Thank you very much.
I taped an episode this morning I wasn't able to get it all maybe about 30 minutes of it haven't watched it yet but Jean Marsh was in it an episode talking about Germany, She is an awesome person from everything I know of her she's another of my favorite Actresses along with you.
Yes - she is brilliant.
Nice hearing about the animals on the show. Thank you for sharing this part of the Waltons ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Judy, I just watched the reunion on Stars in the house you just aired over the weekend.
Thanks so much for watching Stars in the House.
Love 💕 Judy. Doesn’t she speak so lovely, you never age
Go Blue...
The Search involved the chicken 🐓 Bessie
Fitting to mention that episode
I'll look into it. Thanks.
Calico, every time i see that episode I still cry, you all were like our own family growing up watching.
Thanks so much. I have a few of the dolls also. Kinda funny to be a doll :)
I will always be thinking about the camel whenever I see Blue now! 😊
I always enjoyed peacocks as well and chickens
Earl Hamner claimed the peacock story was based on fact.
Oh really cool thanks for sharing that with me appreciate it
Loved this!!
And Jim Bob also
I have been binging the series and I can tell you about Blue.
Thanks for the correction.
Thanks!!! This was great!!! The story about Blue being afraid of camels was funny!!!! I'm still watching the reruns and the stories behind the episodes makes me laugh because I'm catching what you have talked about!!!! Can't wait to see more!!!!!
Oh yay! Thanks.
Rover the peacock was my favorite pet on the show.
Cool.
Wow.
Oh no... I hate to hear about animals being mistreated! I hope all our animals were well cared for.
Oh cool!
I was watching the one where Chance had a bull calf on Hallmark channel earlier.
Enjoyed hearing about the animals! Thanks
So glad!
I remember Erin and Ben seen riding Blu, in the episode “The Runaway”.
I can imagine how many times it might have taken to shoot the scene, with the two of them riding the mule, while Mary Ellen and Jason running forward at the same time
Great question.
I always wondered how they got that mule to spook! He was as bomb proof an equine as I’ve ever seen! I mean, the way the children with run around him, screaming and yelling, spraying him with a hose, and all kinds of other craziness, and that mule just stood there! So funny!
It was pretty funny to watch it happen.
LOL!
You are correct. Must have been a prior mule Grandpa had.
I am just so fascinated with anything having to do with the Waltons. Sure wish there were good family-oriented shows....like this one....on TV today! Keep it up, Judy.♥️
Thank you.
@@judynorton2598 ... Always. Keep em coming, dear.
I recall in Mary’s book she related a story where one of the larger animals (I believe Chance or perhaps it was Blu) stepped on her barefoot and stood on it during the filming of an entire scene. That must have hurt.
I remember reading that too!! I think it was the cow, Chance, but I could be wrong.
I don't recall if I was there at the time - but sounds very painful.
Always wanted a horse and chickens, so watching the waltons with all the animals was so great ,I also loved watching grizzly adams, the waltons and grizzly adams was set in such a different time that just fits in life as us folks that like the earlier part of that era

Your welcome it's my pleasure judy
So glad you are enjoying these
I have three questions: First, are any of the blooper reels that you've mentioned available for you to show us?
