Thanks so much for this! I don't crochet and I knit just a little, but I found this way to crochet I-Cord to be far easier than knitting it! I've just made 10.5 yards of jumbo i-cord (made using "Country Loom" yarn and a 6.5 mm hook) in a couple of hours. For those who mention "why not use the little crank machine", I would point out that you can only use up to size 3 yarn on those and so can only make relatively thin i-cords. The I-cord I just made using this technique used size 6 jumbo yarn and the resulting i-cord is about an inch in diameter! I think I'm going to make a bunch of this size and use about 60 yards to make a big, arm knit pouf! The arm knitting part will only take 30 mins or so, so the time investment will be in making the i-cord, but it's well worth the time invested... :)
Yes, you can make i-cords in different ways. What is nice is when people are willing to make videos to teach me and I can learn the way I like best - or do all the different ways whenever I choose! Thank you! I just practiced your way and it's fun.
I had no idea that you could crochet an I-cord. I have been knitting cords for years and this seems so much easier. Thanks for a easy to follow video. Diane
As a crochet or of over 45 years I thought I knew it all. This video has been invaluable to me. right up there with the foundation single crochet chains and the gapless turning chain. Thank you so much!!
Wow thank you so much for teaching, slowly and very clear instructions. I had to go through a few other videos and it was complicated. But your instructions are perfect. I just watched you the first time and got it and made absolutely stunning bag handles. Thank you so much :) xx
Obrigada. Mesmo não entendendo uma palavra consegui entender aprender e fazer. O foco do vídeo e o movimento suave de suas mãos valem por mil palavras. Gratidão
This is a really nice way to do i-cords!! I haven't tried knitting an i-cord but, for some reason, your demo is more to my liking. I have one of those Knitting Nancys which is fun - because I never did that as a child. I still like your method best. Thank you!
Wow! thank you for that! It's so much better to actually watch a stitch/technique being done than just reading the directions. Your demo was concise, accurate and very easy to follow. Thanks!!!
10 Years after you posted this it is still the Best Instructions I have found on crocheting a substantial cord suitable for purse straps ect!! Great Job and Thanks for sharing!!💯🎀💋🎯🏆🎖♥📀💰👍
This was literally my 10 or 12 time crocheting and got it the first time (sorta. Little loose). Love straight forward, slow, and easy to follow instructions.
thank you so much for this. I am so grateful that there are instructional videos like yours on this site, because I have tried reading the books, but the pictures and the explanations always sound like Greek to me.
I use this for my starter chain on more difficult projects, like trying to work with small fluffy yarn. It's hard to see exactly where to put the hook with a regular starter chain. This makes is super easy and gives it a nice edge even with shells.
Thanks for this video! As I am only a crocheter this is an amazing video to have bookmarked! I have several ideas already for this i-cord, show laces, eye glasses holders, and amigurumi dog lease and belts, this will even be great to add tie-stings to my crochet hats! THANKS SO MUCH! Now I don't have to ask someone else to knit me an i-cord, I can do it myself with practice, time and patience! Thanks again for an awesome video!
Excellent !!!! I just finished a girls top and needed a cord at the bottom....this i-cord will work great! I will be posting on my blog within the week or so. Thanks so much for sharing!
As a long time hooker, I have come to hate having to make ribbing for my projects. Instead, if making a sweater, I crochet an I cord longer than needed & build the panels off of that. I have even created I cord with 15 stitches instead of 3, and build the panel from the icord, but catching both edges, which gave me a tube around the bottom of the sweater to insert a drawstring. It's quite versatile.
Thank you so much, I've been trying to do an i-cord crochet a long time. I saw a lot of videos but never did it. And now I see how simple it is. Thank you soooo much And sorry for my bad English :P
Well. I'll be.....!!! I never knew you could crochet an i-cord. I've been crocheting for more years than I care to admit to, but I'm still learning. Thank you for this enlightenment. Who says you can't teach an old dog a new trick doesn't know handcrafters, obviously! Thanks again.
Omg thank you. I was trying to make an I cord with a spool knitter and I quickly decided that spool knitters are the worst. This is much faster and makes a much better product, so I'm back on track with a project I was thinking of abandoning lol
Thanks. Very clear instructions. I think once I saw a video on making a cupcake, and you needed an cord, but I didn't want to buy a little machine just for that. Did you make up this stitch yourself? Very clever.
Looks a bit like the spool knitting. this is actually simpler, IMO. I've actually used the spool knitter to make ties for hats, bonnets, etc....this will be much easier. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
hi I´m from Ecuador and I love the way you explain everything it´s really easy for me to understand you..thank you for teaching me all those nice things
I have watched other videos and just gave up idk why or how but these seemed easy actually lol maybe your video is just that good and I am in more of learning mood today 😂😂 thank you
If you're also a knitter, but find it difficult to hold onto the stitches off the hook (I have arthritis, as much as I love working with my hands, sometimes my dexterity is poor), try using a cable stitch holder to hold onto them. It does it just as well for this as for doing a cable knit stitch.
Thank you so much! After mastering the granny square last year and producing a bedspread and pillow cover, I wanted to do something a little different, so now I'm following your directions to make a light belt for over a tunic-style blouse.
I haven't heard from the author who showed how to crochet an i-cord correctly. I tried doing that last night but it came out a little flat, literally. I need a bit of help. Thanks! Happy Holidays!
Wow! June, this is an awesome tutorial. I've been crocheting for over 50 years and never figured this one out. Next time I make a little bag that needs a draw string, I'm using this. :-) May I share this video?
OH! That link is perfect. I'd like to share it on my Blog and in my FaceBook Group. I'm also going to be teaching in a little while (I am 62, it's about time, lol), and there's one pattern that I really want to include this in. THANK YOU!
Hello :) I used this tutorial years ago & was so happy to see it's still up :)) I'm attempting to make massively chunky cords from T-shirt yarn for necklace with a piece of horn or shell, anything I can find that's tubular to slide into the Centre to anchor it & give it some style & charm. I got this idea from a maker in the "makers nest" Tasmania pop up shops & online. I don't know how the maker did it, so I'm trying French knittted & lucet & now icord :)) ...it's a work in progress. Your way of doing it is making a beautiful cord. If I wanted 4 loops on the hook would I just do the same thing? If you or anyone who knows could answer this I'd be eternally grateful:) Thanks🙌
June Gilbank awww Thankyou darling heart!! Just what I needed to know .. and I will try going 4 chains .. and just because .. I HAVE to see how 5 goes ;) I am an avid crocheter & with your tut showing us how to hold everything I seem to have found an excellent rhythm in holding the loops & doing chains with my middle finger. I'm using massively chunky yarn on a 9mm hook & threading these ancient tumbled shells, which I was lucky enough to be invited to dig out of native Australian Aboriginal middens (shell dumping grounds!!!, I got A LOT of shells. My mum & I are shell freaks. She makes really amazing stuff with them anyway I digress...) , so the bashed up but SMOOTH ones with holes directly through the Centre make PERFECT big chunky pendants that I can thread the big cord through. I've done some mock ups & im really excited .. now I just need to find the rest of these particular shells ... hmmmm, hehehe. Thankyou for being the only vid I found that really made it easy to size my cord & and it was lovely to come back to you after all these years :)) x
What are I-cords used for anyway? Personally, when I finish mine I'll put on my key chain and use as a decoration, thanks for this simple yet amazing video!❤😄😌
I think it will be faster and easier to use 2 crochet hooks. Slide the 3 st to end of crochet hook 1 and usse hook 2 to make the next 3 loops. What do you think? no fear of dropping a loop
How you finish depends on what you'd like to do with your i-cord - there are several options! Please see the bonus tips at the end of my blog post for details: www.planetjune.com/icord
Because i-cord has the same structure as knitted fabric, it's quite stretchy. I'd recommend you try my Basic Crochet Cord if you want a non-stretchy cord: ua-cam.com/video/IOTGUHn7mGg/v-deo.html :)

You have the best voice for tutorials. This was great all the way around, plus very relaxing to listen to.
Ms Gilbank, I'm new to crocheting and your videos have been a great help whenever I get stuck. Thank you!
Thank you sooooo much!!! I've watched lots of how to make i-cord videos, but none of them was as clear as this one.I really liked it!!

I had never heard of i cords and just want to thank you for sharing - GREAT!
I didn't even know you could crochet an i-cord. I have only knit them and I'm 73. Thank you, great tutorial ♥
I don't know if it's you or who, but the person who made this up is a genius.
とても分かりやすくてすぐ編めました👍ありがとうございます😊

This is the easiest way to make an icord that I've seen yet!!!! Thank you so very much!!!
I agree. I have seen other people do it. But she is the best. Very simple and straightforward!! :)
Good.. love from Sikkim India 🇮🇳
And I'm your new subscriber thanks..
I used a small cable needle for the first two loop as I had trouble just holding them tight with my finger but this is ingenious! Thank you!
OH my GOODNESS! Thank you for this video! You make it easy to learn new things and I love that!

did you just call yourself a hooker

Can you share photos? tutorial?
That's a term for crocheters is Hooker. So yes, if you crochet you are a hooker. So I can say I am a proud hooker. XD

I am very happy to learn this I cord crochet thankyou very much to teach us
Much quicker than knitting an I-cord as one has to keep on switching the needle to the other hand. Thank you for sharing!

Take care 💜🧶🙏🏽
This is much easier if you have a cable needle handy, or a safety pin, so you don't accidentally drop the stitches you're holding.
I would have liked to have seen how you finished it off.
When your done yarn over and pull through all 3 loops then chain one and knot off.
Thanks. Very clear instructions. I think once I saw a video on making a cupcake, and you needed an cord, but I didn't want to buy a little machine just for that. Did you make up this stitch yourself? Very clever.

I never tried this bc I figured it was difficult to make🤦🏽♀️thanks for the video. Looks easy enough.
I didn't know that i-cord could be done by crochet. Thank you for showing me!

I was wondering since time ago about this interesting type of cord. Actually, it was easy, thanks to your simple directions!

Thank you for sharing! I'll use this technique for making skinny arms & legs for amigurumi projects! Very clear explanation & good close ups.
Thankyou for this I love it
EXCELLENT!!! thanks so much for sharing and being very clear….how simple this is.
Es cierto. Muy claro.
Excellent. I hv been looking for just this type of cord to make for my little crochet phone pouched. Thks heaps.

Hello from Mexico. Thanks, June. Easy to follow and very usefull tutorial.
thanks so much for sharing this technique. I love to use icord, but HATE knitting it. This has to be a lot faster. Thanks again.
fantastic technique to crochet an I cord. Really beautiful. I am very eager to do this early. Thank you june

Thank you!! Come to my channel, please !! I value your opinion about my manual work !! My children's shoes.

Mulțumesc tuturor celor care ne transmit si noua modele
You can get a similar effect using a lucet plus you can cut the cord and it won't fray.
Thank you for showing us a way to do the i-cord with crochet. I was having a terrible time with knitting the i-cord (lol). :)
You are a great instructor and I love your tutorials! Thank you for taking the time, it's appreciated:))
very clear & easy to follow, thanks for posting, i only made a chain & a half double crochet for the handle gonna try this one.
thank you for sharing this ! Its a very handy and well made video, Love Crochet !
I think it will be faster and easier to use 2 crochet hooks. Slide the 3 st to end of crochet hook 1 and usse hook 2 to make the next 3 loops. What do you think? no fear of dropping a loop
Great tutorial! THANKS! Have you done it with more than just the three loops? 4? 5?
Realmente muito bom e útil. Faltou mostrar com encerrar o cordão.

You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am a show me person, I sometimes find it hard to read directions and get it. I like the visual. Very good.
I love your tutorial. It's easy to learn and I have already made one for my crochet bag. Thank you for sharing.
Shared it.👍👍
Merci beaucoup, pour le partage, du tuto de l'anse. C'est très gentil de votre part. 🌺🥀🌷🌹💐💐💐
Such an excellent tutorial! Thank you for taking your time with it.
Yes understand mom.... I need this tutorial and I do like to try, thank you so much 🌹🌹🌹
Very useful :D I can knit, but my i-cords aren't the best in knitting. This would be fantastic for a pull-string hoodie.
Nice tutorial one question, how do u close it off
June Gilbank thanks so much
thank you june, i needed to do crochet cord, followed your video, BUT I 'VE STARTED WITH 4 CHAINS NOT 3, BECAUSE I WANTED THICKER CORD, THANK YOU 😘
That is very nice I like it but how do you end it

I have been teaching myself since last year off and on, I'm loving these videos. Thank you for making learning so easy.

Hi, this was helpful. Thank you. -NY USA
You're very welcome!
thank you for sharing this ! Its a very handy and well made video, Happy Crochet !
You make this look very easy. Unfortunately my hands aren't this dexterous. Best of luck out there.
You might like to try my Basic Crochet Cord tutorial instead - it's much easier and faster than an i-cord, and no special dexterity needed :)

@@planetjune Thank you! :)
Ok! Sorry....I got it! I kept trying and turns out the further I got and as I stretched ...it formed! Thank you! Very creative yet simple enough for even me! :-)
I saw someone who used an I-cord as chunky yarn. Pretty nifty ue for it! Just crochet an I-chord into a ball and crochet with it :)
Oh wow, thank you so much for uploading this! :) It seems very useful indeed!!
This is nice can you make bad handle too.
So glad I found this video. Followed along and made a perfect i-cord in black! Thank Ü!
Very clever. I usually do a knitted icord, but I'll definitely try this.
Thanks
can this be made larger? maybe for a rope effect? i have a tunision hook n dpn needles thank you for the idea
Do you have a video for a knitted I cord? My finger knitted one looked like this, I will try both kinds I need purse strap
Thank you for your video....I'm just wondering why does my I-cord look open on 1 side. yours looks all closed up all the way around. Thank you
You may need to make a few more rows before you see it taking shape - it looks flat at first, but if you keep going, you'll see the tubular shape emerge!
