To be 100% honest I don't draw as much as I want to, but through math I still cant find problems even if I drew every day and stored every single doodle. I don't use it for streaming or games, so much of its internal storage is free. The only thing I dislike about the Air 5 is the lack of magnetic covers, so I use a sleeve instead. I don't get why, because if you look at the internals there is a lot of empty space they could have used for that. My previous tablet was a Tab 6 which has an amazing cover that matches its colour.

Thanks a ton for creating this video - much needed. Planning to but an ipad and an iphone both which goes well with my budget but at the same time, perfect for an illustration-beginner. I had my doubts on pricing, procreate compatibility, layers, brightness and more . You covered more than what I could have even imagined. I loved those blocks where you categorically explained what’s the S & A, and I’m now going to make a call on either having an Air 5 or others in S. Thank you for ending on a best piece of advice, it will stop me from buying expensive options unnecessarily. Will do it when I feel I’m confident and have learned the art nicely. Thanks again! :)
I currently do not have an iPad right now but i might me getting one. In my opinion the iPad Air 3 is the most affordable and best for me ! Thank you this helped alot!
thank you SO much for this video! i watched the 2022 one as well, and this is truly the absolute best look at what ipads are best for drawing especially with procreate. that layer breakdown is THE best! i'm a professional illustrator and am finally looking to upgrade my ipad pro this year to a newer model and cannot wait!
What a great well thought out video. Had been looking to grab an iPad for my 10yr old who is a budding young artist and this video lead me to go with the iPad Air with Apple Pencil as well. Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much! I'm looking for which iPad I should get to start my journey of digital art using procreate and from what I've read and seen, this has been the best
When I started out with digital art 5-6 years ago I got an iPad pro, not sure which gen but it was new at the time. Worked great for 4 years or so but it was practically out of storage for the last 1,5 years.. (32 Gb 😬) I decided to invest in a better one a year ago after getting the new 2nd gen pencil for christmas and bought the iPad Air, Gen 5. It's been amazing honestly, love the bigger screen especially and the fact that the pencil charges itself automatically when attacked to the side of the screen. It was a hassle to keep the charging piece for the old pencil on me everywhere. Never tried Procreate, so I didn't know about the layer limits. That program really wouldn't work for me tbh. I've used ClipStudioPaint from the beginning, and usually use about 50-200, sometimes with complicated pieces up to 300 layers. Not joking. Yeah it crashes the program sometimes but not too much, that's why I save often. Some pieces take me months to complete, but that's just how it goes lol.

Your data is incorrect - iPad Mini 6 gets 19 layers at these specs, as it has the same RAM as that tier (reference to layer section). Coming from someone with an Pro with 1TB and the Mini 5, confirmed right now 😅
@@generationdink You are right! The Mini 6 gets 19 layers, not 7 - fabulous news for artists who want that portability! I'll be updating that in my next video later this week.
this was really helpful for me thanks! Ill share that I bought the ipad pro 11 (refurb and new to me!) primarily because the air5 max's out at 256gb - just not enough space as a video creator and editor. Also the speakers are night and day different and the data transfer speed from an iphone is worth the upgrade.
Is that the 2018 version (iPad pro 3rd gen). I’m thinking about getting that one too as it’s super cheap but I don’t know what to do as it’s 4 years old already. I’m worried about the software updates and future-proofing it. I have a £500 limit
Very great review! So important to know the layering info. My current iPad is great but I want more layers, currently it does 4 with the specs you listed lol so any other one would be an improvement at this point. I wanna save up for the pro 12.9 in that gets 41-77 layers
Hello! I am getting really lost in the sauce with all of the different models right now. I am very much a beginning artist and want something to start out on, however I am still very much a tech geek and the quality of life with the pros (apple pencil 2 and 120hz refresh rate) seem really appealing. But I am also not trying to spend a ton of money right now. Any thoughts that might help? Lovely and informative video as always!😊
I got the iPad 9.7in with 128gb for around $380 a few years ago. That has been a great investment, works so well. You could also get refurbished ones for cheaper
Did Apple provide the ‘ hover’ feature for the Apple Pencil exclusively for the M2 iPad in order to sell more of them? It seems to me they could easily provide this feature for M1 iPads but choose not to. What do you think?
planning to get my first ipad and might just get an air 5 cause of this. really wanted to go for mini 6 due to portability but 7 layers wont cut it for me!
Would really like to see the video where you use your iPad as your laptop😅 I know someone who's bought all the accessories for his iPad pro, and I told him he might as well use it as a laptop, and he gave me a noncommittal answer. Would really like to hear what you have to say on it
Thankyou!...It is so easy to get caught up in Cyber sales...My 12.9 4th Gen should be fine for me learning and working on my skills. Making the Transition to digital and am trying not to buy "ALL the Things" before I really know what I'm doing.
Sorry if u think I’m young. I’m ending fifth grade and I think I want to start to do digital art over the summer :p I’ve watched some videos beforehand to see what iPad would be good for me. I wanted to get the Reg iPad 10, but then I watched this video and also thought that I should get more storage, I don’t care if I only have 7 layers, that’s good enough for me. I was going to get 64 gigs but I don’t know if that would work for me. I don’t know if I will need to use my personal iPad a lot in middle school but I don’t think so. I don’t know if I should just still get the Reg iPad 10 with 64 gigs. Or should I wait till I am older and am better at art. Please reply and give me ideas. Have a good and productive day/week, and bye.
I still have my 12.9 iPad Pro with the M1 chip. The M2 chip version didn’t seem much like an upgrade except for maybe the Apple Pencil hover and the faster chip. Didn’t seem worth it to get imo.
Same. Time will tell though, the potential of Apple Pencil hover is exciting! But it might be that by the time it’s potential is realized… Apple will have a new iPad available.
This was great, thank you. I want to get an iPad pretty much 95% of the time for drawing and animating, and the iPad air 5 sounds great! ^^ I'm sure I would definitely love a bigger screen though, I just wish those extra 2 inches didn't come at nearly double the price T-T
Question: If I understand correctly, the amount of Procreate layers you can have depends on your canvas size, so what canvas size are you using as a reference when talking about how many each model can support? My iPhone with Procreate’s Pocket app seems to have more layers possible than some of the iPad Pros and that just doesn’t logically make sense to me…🧐
If the amount of layers you get its about having them at once like 20 layers at once its alot and then you can merge them to your picture then you can make new ones so whats the point in getting an expensive ipad just for that? If you ask me the best for drawing would be an ipad with large screen then with good ram and good cpu even if you have 64gb or less it doesn't matter you can always send your work to your personal site or in instagram or wherever you want so you dont really need big storage like more than 64gb etc correct me if im wrong
I love my ipad mini6. Such a good all rounder and so portable. I can still draw on it with procreate, just upgraded from 64gb to the 256gb version, just waiting for procreate to redownload and hopefully with all my art work on it. I used the backup that my apple store did this afternoon, the grey little wheel is still moving so going to leave it and let it do what it has to do. from the uk
Actually I have 64Gb version. I'm not storing anything on my iPad. 64gb is totally enough for me Ben working with 4k video project. You just need to save complete or backup projects to cloud or external hdd. But its personal preference. You should know what's your way to go.

So did I get it right? If I bought the Ipad air 5 with 64gb I will get 41 layers in procreate?
THANK YOU, Brooke! You are by far the BEST in delivering the most COMPREHENSIBLE INFORMATION and INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN and in ART and CHOICE! I am so grateful. xxx
Thank you so much for all the information, that is exactly what I needed for my decision on which iPad to buy for Procreate.
I love your calm and clear way of explaining and will certainly go through your channel for more videos.
I'm so glad it was helpful! I actually just made a couple updates for this year, in a new video which you can see here: ua-cam.com/video/2RqaNTPjzQ8/v-deo.htmlsi=XXfEPoWVJyKxQNRz
Thanks so much for giving information to advanced & newbies. I’m excited about your beginning drawing classes. I’m a grandma beginning artist.
Can you talk about the different screen sizes and how they compare while using procreate?
This was extremely helpful in putting all the IPad capabilities in perspective. Very well done video!
Very good information and inspiring!!
thank you SO much for this video! i watched the 2022 one as well, and this is truly the absolute best look at what ipads are best for drawing especially with procreate. that layer breakdown is THE best! i'm a professional illustrator and am finally looking to upgrade my ipad pro this year to a newer model and cannot wait!
Great summary! Thank you Brooke for breaking all the information down!
There’s so many factors to consider! But so worth the investment 😍🎨
What a great well thought out video. Had been looking to grab an iPad for my 10yr old who is a budding young artist and this video lead me to go with the iPad Air with Apple Pencil as well. Thanks so much!!
I just got the air 5 and it’s amazing
That’s awesome, congrats! It’s such a good value!
excellent breakdown. super helpful, thank you
So helpful, tysm! Found you on TikTok and UA-cam came through with the recommendations!
Thank you so much! I'm looking for which iPad I should get to start my journey of digital art using procreate and from what I've read and seen, this has been the best
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you thank you!
Video format alone made me subscribe. Incredible flow.

I got it refurbished from Apple Canada. I don't think it's that old. I think it's two years old it's an M1 processor and 11 in. Absolutely loving it
Very great review! So important to know the layering info. My current iPad is great but I want more layers, currently it does 4 with the specs you listed lol so any other one would be an improvement at this point. I wanna save up for the pro 12.9 in that gets 41-77 layers
Great video , I can see the effort put to make this review it is cleverly made ,it can help people with different need and budget.
My husband and I are finally getting an ipad and wanted to know the best one for art. THANK YOUUUUU
Most useful video for someone looking for iPad info🙏🏾
9:16 - It’s because they changed the amount of ram on some of the higher capacity ones. It’s something that they did not always do.
This video helped me a lot.
It was exacly what I was looking for since I don't have any knowledge on iPads and as an artist I thinking to buy one.
One is the K11 pencil and the other one can charge on the iPad i just don’t know the name
The iPad Air is magnetic 🧲 with the Apple Pencil
I got the iPad 9.7in with 128gb for around $380 a few years ago. That has been a great investment, works so well. You could also get refurbished ones for cheaper
Did Apple provide the ‘ hover’ feature for the Apple Pencil exclusively for the M2 iPad in order to sell more of them? It seems to me they could easily provide this feature for M1 iPads but choose not to. What do you think?
two days ago my 2018 iPad pro 12.9 got stolen… here to see if i can go get a cheaper option. This video is exactly what i was looking for!
great video. didn't know the storage affects the layer limits. thanks!
planning to get my first ipad and might just get an air 5 cause of this. really wanted to go for mini 6 due to portability but 7 layers wont cut it for me!
Thanks for updating this video!!
Great video, very informative, and awesome visuals/graphs!
Thank you, this has been a pleasure to watch. Used Air gen 5 it is.
What a video, I now know the iPad I want for illustration. Honestly thank you. So relaxing too
Awesome info. Jennifer Nichols referred me to this video for info on which iPad to buy. This has helped me so much! Thank you!
I’m not sure if it’s a new update but my max layers are 281 on the iPad mini 6th gen
512 gb m4 on standard screen size canvas, I am getting upto 180 layers
super high effort video, seriously. amazing job, thank you
I was waiting for this ever since I saw your 2022 video! Super helpful once again
Yay, so glad it helped!
Would really like to see the video where you use your iPad as your laptop😅
I know someone who's bought all the accessories for his iPad pro, and I told him he might as well use it as a laptop, and he gave me a noncommittal answer.
Would really like to hear what you have to say on it
I ditched my Mac this summer and became all in on the iPad. No regrets.
Wow! I’m surprised so far with all that you can do: what do you usually use your iPad/computer for?
@@BrookeGlaser Drawing in Procreate, video editing, casual games, email, internet, photo editing…..it’s my “computer”
Gracias for this valuable information and your classes!🙏🏼
Aw thank you, I’m so glad they’re helpful!
Thankyou!...It is so easy to get caught up in Cyber sales...My 12.9 4th Gen should be fine for me learning and working on my skills. Making the Transition to digital and am trying not to buy "ALL the Things" before I really know what I'm doing.
There will always be another good time to buy an iPad. 🎨❤️
thank you so much ma'am for this chart.. it helped me a lot..
It’s me but on a different account lol
i graduated today
Such a great video for those getting started!
amazing amazing video for artists thanks a lot for all this research
I still have my 12.9 iPad Pro with the M1 chip. The M2 chip version didn’t seem much like an upgrade except for maybe the Apple Pencil hover and the faster chip. Didn’t seem worth it to get imo.
Same. Time will tell though, the potential of Apple Pencil hover is exciting! But it might be that by the time it’s potential is realized… Apple will have a new iPad available.
you've narrowed down my choices. This is the video I was looking for. Thank you!
Wow you have helped me sooooooooo much!!!! Thank you! That chart is amazing!! 🎉
Srsly thinking to get one of the newer models. not for the more layers- but for the bigger size I can create.
This was great, thank you. I want to get an iPad pretty much 95% of the time for drawing and animating, and the iPad air 5 sounds great! ^^
I'm sure I would definitely love a bigger screen though, I just wish those extra 2 inches didn't come at nearly double the price T-T
The best video on iPad for creatives
Question: If I understand correctly, the amount of Procreate layers you can have depends on your canvas size, so what canvas size are you using as a reference when talking about how many each model can support? My iPhone with Procreate’s Pocket app seems to have more layers possible than some of the iPad Pros and that just doesn’t logically make sense to me…🧐
It says at the bottom *16” by 16” at 300 dots per inch* which is 4800 by 4800
@@komayo Thank you! I missed that detail!
I took a deep bow for your clear explanation ❤
great video, you should to change the name of this to "ipad ranking" because this exactly what I am looking for
If the amount of layers you get its about having them at once like 20 layers at once its alot and then you can merge them to your picture then you can make new ones so whats the point in getting an expensive ipad just for that?
That's a really great analysis, thank you!
Thank you, this is an incredibly comprehensive guide. ❤️
This video was so helpful ❤
Thank you so much!
Hi Brooke!! I like you!! You are so good..so knowledgeable (is that a word?) I really enjoyed your tutorial! Let me tell you about where I'm coming from. I'm a 70 yr. Old widow lady (of one year). My husband died of COPD for which I'm following him..rather quickly 😮 I'm not whining I just have to hurry 😅 For the last year I've been doing art work dabbling in all the different media. I love the colored pencils; but I don't have time to color all that. I'm a Christian so I do a lot of stuff with Scriptures and uplifting verses. It's all fun. Your the first one to come up in my search and you have hooked me!!! I'm going to look at some of your other videos.
Thanks, deni
manifesting ipad air 5!
I have a generation iPad 10. I went into Procreate and clicked as many layers as I could just test out for myself. I was able to do 63 layers so I’m a little bit confused.
What an amazing review! And your charts are awesome and instantly readable!
what a great video. totally helped with decision-making on which ipad to get to use with procreate! thank you!!!!!
best guide! thanks!
Thank you soo much, this video its very helpful for me ❤️
I just ordered an IPad air 3 to use for stitch fiddle. I hope I didn't waste my money.
Too good.u cleared all my confusions
Love the final chart, very helpful ❤️
