I went with the 5th generation iPad Pro 12.9” with 1TB because I use a lot of layers in my work, wanted to work in a larger canvas, really don’t care about hover and I got it on sale around Black Friday for $550 less than the 6th generation. After a 10 year digital art hiatus I got the Air 5th gen and have adored using it over the last year to practice. I enjoyed drawing again (specifically Procreate) so much I just upgraded to the 12.9 Pro 6th gen (mostly for the screen size.) I’m really light handed and the 60hz became very noticeable to me once I got comfortable, plus the Air would get really hot on Procreate cos I zoom in a lot for details and use loads of layers. I was constantly using a cooling mat as iPad screens automatically dim when overheating which got so frustrating when working with colours and made me paranoid I was reducing the Air’s life further. I haven’t broken the Pro in properly yet but I’m absolutely obsessed with it so far and can see now that working on a 12.9 screen is priceless!

    Great video. I’m not an artist but found interesting. I think the Air 5 is a great bargain too. Only thing I would say though is that I think all “Airs” have 60hz screen vs 120hz on pros. I first watched it in 2021 and it helped tremendously, but in 2022 with the new models I was thinking how awesome it would be to have your opinion on these. I ended up buying the Air 5 with 256GB and I'm so glad we agree on its amazing value lol. I decided to spend more on storage than a fancy camera and a 120Hz that I won't even notice. It is an absolute beast and I love it so much.

      Hi I'm an artist too and I'm thinking of getting an iPad air 5 but question is iPad air 6 might be a thing at the end of the year so and I'm really indecisive rn since I'm thinking of getting iPad air 5 but what if the iPad air 6 will have the hover feature that feature is really helpful! So what do u recommend I'd love to hear ur opinion!
      Also how much more expensive would the new air 6 be than air 5 just a question and thanks a have a great day!^^❤

    • @FutileGrief
      @FutileGrief Рік тому +2

      @@giratinalight hi there! No idea if there's going to be an iPad Air 6 by the end of the year. What I know is that the hover option is only available for the iPad Pro with the M2 chip, and I think it will remain thay way (for the pro line). So if you want it, your best option would be an 11 inch iPad Pro M2 128 GB. It's not much more expensive than the iPad Air 5 and it will be a better choice for you than waiting for an iPad 6. Regarding the price, I want to believe that it will be more or less the same as the iPad Air 5 but you know how Apple is lol they charge for everything.
      I ultimately chose the iPad Air 5 because I needed more storage (I work with video) and didn't want to pay the Pro price tag. If you're a digital artist and only paint and draw or even work with vectors, you can totally get away with 128GB of storage and you will enjoy the hover function and the 120Hz refresh rate. If you need more storage and feel like 256GB is enough and are not bothered by the 60Hz, I would get the iPad Air 5. Even if they come out with an iPad Air 6 I would reckon it will be essentially the same but with a slightly higher price tag and maybe an M2 chip. I have yet to use the M1 to it's full potential, I haven't even gotten close. The M1 is a massive beast of a chip and totally overkill. Even the iPad Air 4 is still a beast. I just really wanted the perks that came with the M1 chip hehhehheh.
      But yeah, tldr, consider how much storage you actually need because I think you could get away with an 11 inch Ipad Pro 128GB with the M2 chip. It has the hover functionality you want and it's only like 100-150 bucks more, and you get all the perks of the Pro.

I don't use it for streaming or games, so much of its internal storage is free.
      The only thing I dislike about the Air 5 is the lack of magnetic covers, so I use a sleeve instead. I don't get why, because if you look at the internals there is a lot of empty space they could have used for that. My previous tablet was a Tab 6 which has an amazing cover that matches its colour.

    When I started out with digital art 5-6 years ago I got an iPad pro, not sure which gen but it was new at the time. Worked great for 4 years or so but it was practically out of storage for the last 1,5 years.. (32 Gb 😬) I decided to invest in a better one a year ago after getting the new 2nd gen pencil for christmas and bought the iPad Air, Gen 5. It's been amazing honestly, love the bigger screen especially and the fact that the pencil charges itself automatically when attacked to the side of the screen. It was a hassle to keep the charging piece for the old pencil on me everywhere.
    Never tried Procreate, so I didn't know about the layer limits. That program really wouldn't work for me tbh. I've used ClipStudioPaint from the beginning, and usually use about 50-200, sometimes with complicated pieces up to 300 layers. Not joking. Yeah it crashes the program sometimes but not too much, that's why I save often. Some pieces take me months to complete, but that's just how it goes lol.

    Did Apple provide the ‘ hover’ feature for the Apple Pencil exclusively for the M2 iPad in order to sell more of them? It seems to me they could easily provide this feature for M1 iPads but choose not to. What do you think?

    I know someone who's bought all the accessories for his iPad pro, and I told him he might as well use it as a laptop, and he gave me a noncommittal answer.

    Sorry if u think I’m young. I’m ending fifth grade and I think I want to start to do digital art over the summer :p I’ve watched some videos beforehand to see what iPad would be good for me. I wanted to get the Reg iPad 10, but then I watched this video and also thought that I should get more storage, I don’t care if I only have 7 layers, that’s good enough for me. I was going to get 64 gigs but I don’t know if that would work for me. I don’t know if I will need to use my personal iPad a lot in middle school but I don’t think so. I don’t know if I should just still get the Reg iPad 10 with 64 gigs. Or should I wait till I am older and am better at art. Please reply and give me ideas. Have a good and productive day/week, and bye.

    I still have my 12.9 iPad Pro with the M1 chip. The M2 chip version didn’t seem much like an upgrade except for maybe the Apple Pencil hover and the faster chip. Didn’t seem worth it to get imo.

    • @BrookeGlaser
      @BrookeGlaser  2 роки тому +1

      Same. Time will tell though, the potential of Apple Pencil hover is exciting! But it might be that by the time it’s potential is realized… Apple will have a new iPad available.

    Question: If I understand correctly, the amount of Procreate layers you can have depends on your canvas size, so what canvas size are you using as a reference when talking about how many each model can support? My iPhone with Procreate’s Pocket app seems to have more layers possible than some of the iPad Pros and that just doesn’t logically make sense to me…🧐

    If the amount of layers you get its about having them at once like 20 layers at once its alot and then you can merge them to your picture then you can make new ones so whats the point in getting an expensive ipad just for that? If you ask me the best for drawing would be an ipad with large screen then with good ram and good cpu even if you have 64gb or less it doesn't matter you can always send your work to your personal site or in instagram or wherever you want so you dont really need big storage like more than 64gb etc correct me if im wrong

    I love my ipad mini6. Such a good all rounder and so portable. I can still draw on it with procreate, just upgraded from 64gb to the 256gb version, just waiting for procreate to redownload and hopefully with all my art work on it. I used the backup that my apple store did this afternoon, the grey little wheel is still moving so going to leave it and let it do what it has to do. from the uk

    Actually I have 64Gb version. I'm not storing anything on my iPad. 64gb is totally enough for me Ben working with 4k video project. You just need to save complete or backup projects to cloud or external hdd. But its personal preference. You should know what's your way to go.

    Hi Brooke!! I like you!! You are so good..so knowledgeable (is that a word?) I really enjoyed your tutorial! Let me tell you about where I'm coming from. I'm a 70 yr. Old widow lady (of one year). My husband died of COPD for which I'm following him..rather quickly 😮 I'm not whining I just have to hurry 😅 For the last year I've been doing art work dabbling in all the different media. I love the colored pencils; but I don't have time to color all that. I'm a Christian so I do a lot of stuff with Scriptures and uplifting verses. It's all fun. Your the first one to come up in my search and you have hooked me!!! I'm going to look at some of your other videos.
    Thanks, deni
