My traditional music is all around triplets, so I always felt very comfortable playing them. I didn't even know what a triplet was when I started to play the drums, but my fills were all triplets. Thing is, that's why I'm struggling with becoming good at tuplets in general: my muscle memory is set on triplets and I have to focus really hard to keep my hands and my feet playing 5 or 7 instead of 6 or 3. Hope the exercises are useful for that lol

Sweet grooves! Refreshing and not too busy of a way of making some tension....I am wondering how this will fit in with bass players thinking if your typical subdivisions they are use to...triplets 8ths 16ths etc..... It's going to be interesting....
    Suggestion.....
Could you play this against some bass tracks that are not on the quintuplet grid to see how it feels?
Also 7 note subdivision grooves I would love to see.
    Thanks for the lesson!

I'd love to see you do a video talking about some cool patterns that involve switching between different numbers of uplets. Maybe something involving triplets *and* quintuplets in the same tempo, or sextuplets and septuplets, if it's even possible to switch your brain between such close note durations.

If anyone finds this useful, I tend to use 1 e & e a, similar to the semiquaver counting

You could probably use this on a song like "Every body wants to the rule the world" by "tears for fears" when you go from the hihat and play open handed for the chorus parts of the song

You can count quintuplets as 12123, 22123, 32123, changing the first number to keep track of what beat in the measure you're on, or you can count it as a bar of 5/4 and count 8th notes as, 1+2+3+4+5+, this would only take up 2 quarter notes b/c you're counting 10 beats, therefore you'd have to double it and repeat it to make a bar of 4/4, whats important to realize that if you count it as 8th notes is that the down beat of beat 2 fall on the "&" of 3, {1}+2+3{+}4+5+, the down beats being in the brackets. Whats cool about counting this way is that it gives you the illusion of playing in straight time and being able to think like you ordinarily do except you just have to keep track that the down beat falls on the "&" of 3. You have to internalize the quintuplet note rate first that way when you start playing quints you don't confused with counting regular time. This way of counting only works if you're playing multiple quarters notes of quintuplets b/c if its just one beat of quints it not that sufficient to count 1+2+3 in my opinion, I would count 12123 for a quarter note of quints. This same concept can be applied to septuplets (7's) and counting 1212123 or 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+, except when counting the second way with 8th notes, the downbeat of the second quater fall on the "&" of 4 instead, where as in the quintuplets if fell on the "&" of beat 3.

great video Craig! the only thing i think that would of made the video better is if you explained a bit about what you were doing in the intro with the splices of 32nd notes within the quintuplets, also my favorite way to count quintuplets ( i havent seen any one do this before but) count them like 1E+AGA the extra GA or GUH will just roll off your tongue haha! thanks again for the vdeo :)

Hi mate thanks for watching. The lick you are talking about all I did was double the left hand, so instead of RLRLR I went RLLRLLR, and the doubles were as you said, 32nd notes. Sounds a lot hard than it is! Hope this helps
