  • In March 2020, the world as we knew it changed forever.
"People were getting hospitalized and seriously ill. As far as our guys go, we were passing COVID onto each other cause we had to use the same tools, driving the same trucks. And then, there's taking it home to your family, you know, and putting them at risk," Tim Shaffer said.
Shaffer works in the grounds shop for Milwaukee Public Schools.
"Things like electricians, plumbers, masons, pretty much everything is done in-house," Shaffer explained.
Ryan Charles and Chris Poehlman are laborers.
"We're in and out of several buildings throughout the day. We're in contact with the public, we're in contact with people who happen to be in the building," Charles said.

My 63yr old husband is a full-time construction worker in MI and he wasn't paid a penny more for working during the pandemic either! It's so heartbreaking to see him bust his butt every day while others made money to be off work. It felt like he wasn't good enough to be taken care of. Neither his health nor his income was valued during that time. What can be done??? It's so disheartening to say the least. 🥺

If you work, you should receive the wages you earned. Another problem MPS did not handle ethically. Very insulting that other employees received double pay. Keep investigating. Take legal action.

Wage theft pure and simple. The other employees are union I bet. Look I was an Ascension employee, and went through the pandemic from 2020 to September 2021, when they laid off the entire department and replaced them with contractors. Not even a "thank you", or hazard pay. They also made us use PTO if we got sick. SO I can really relate to these gents. This pandemic was a great excuse for a corporate power grab.
This is why we need more regulations and worker protections.

Someone stole that money. There was so much thievery going on during the height of the pandemic. That was government money ear marked for essential workers who were provided hazard pay. No questions asked. These folks were risking life and limb to keep our economy going and this is the thanks they get? Shame on you MPS.

Stop crying there were people, including me that work through the whole pandemic and didn’t get nothing out of it.

same here, company went under and i never even got formally laid off, nobody picked up and the doors were locked one day. didnt qualify for rent protection so i had to keep working whatever odd job i could get just to pay rent. AC went out for a while and I didnt have a yard so I just got watched by cops if i decided to go outside, it felt like if you didnt have a secure job and a house when the pandemic hit or family to help then nobody gave the slightest shit about you. couldnt even get the stimulus checks either because i was college age and found out my parents were claiming me as a dependent even though i moved out, i got nothing except endless bills.

Me too, I worked in Ascension hospitals. Just because you are too much of a coward to demand what is owed to you, doesn't mean these guys have to take it

@@Echelon730 Exactly. I was like stop trying to conflate your situation with theirs. Those were government funds that were given to MPS. Where is the money? I worked for a place where I was an essential worker. We were given hazard pay and were paid whenever we had to take off and our sick time was not docked. They did everything they could to keep the business going and historically this place had a bad track record when it came to employment relations but they really stepped up during the pandemic. They even gave bonuses during the pandemic. So I guess I lucked out.
