Knoebels has such a big place in my heart. I’m not much a ride person but I still can’t help being fascinated by them I went on the Phoenix, let alone any coaster, for the first time in 2014 at the insistence of my girlfriend and haven’t been on a coaster since. Hell I’ve never even been on the flyers. My mom worked at the Alamo and went on the Phoenix when it opened (Apparently the staff were given a free go at it) before also never going on. There’s just a special joy in being there on a hot day and doing whatever you want that’s within your thrill range. It should be on anyone’s park bucket list just for having a lot to do and being pet friendly.
I always had an obsession with these rides as a kid. Probably from the fear of them. The outsides just look so ominous and raw and I still see something special in them so it’s cool to find channels like this that have the same enthusiasm and look into the background and details. You should check out the knotts scary farm haunted house “dark ride.” The theme is that you’re walking through a broken down one of these and go back and forth between the actual track of the ride and the machinery with the power coming on and off. it’s pretty creative
one of my favorites dark rides is Mr Toads Wild Ride at Disneyland , Anaheim CA. But it is also a shame the small independent parks are keep closing. I have not been on a county fair / traveling carnival dark ride since i was in grade school however. Cool video report , i liked it.
fun fact, small theme parks are beginning to open next month, one i believe in san jose and some others, not sure how they're doing it but they announced this and san diego zoo will be fully operational next month
This is what I was looking for! As a kid I watched how the dark ride got build at the carnaval at our town, then later drawing the ride, including little bolts and screws. These classic dark rides still are the first thing i'm looking for at any fair or carnival. I will definately follow this series ( already hooked on POV rollercoaster rides) Thanx for this specific dark ride series!
Give Trimper's Haunted House on the Ocean City Maryland Boardwalk a go. Opened in 1964 and most of the original scenes and dioramas are still there. One of the VERY few Bill Tracy designed dark rides still operating. Thanks my friend, great stuff indeed!
What a great video. This so brings me back to when I was a kid growing up in Metro Detroit and going to an amusement park Bob-Lo Island. It too had a dark ride similar to the first clip especially the outside dip in between the inside. One of the coolest parts was not just getting there but the mode of transport to get u there. The island was on the Canadian side of the river and we would board these awesome Bob-Lo riverboats and the 3 tiered cruisers would steam majestically between Us/Canada riverway for about about 45-50 minute cruise. The boats each had a stage and a big dancefloor and would be rented out by various groups for parties and concerts. I remember buying popcorn from the concessions attendant as the eager seagulls would be at the ready as they glided along with us catching the corn in midair as we would offer various lobs to test their trapping skills. They hardly ever missed. 😊 Wish I could instill the excitement as a kid you'd feel when the park came into view as the rollercoasters and ferris wheels would be in action. That park and the boats have long slipped into Detroit history. So nice to see folks like this striving to keep this wonderful part of Americana around for younger generations to enjoy. And it's so true they don't make em like those anymore. Once they're gone they're gone.
I can’t believe I haven’t found this channel until now, I absolutely love old dark rides! I had the pleasure of meeting Dick Knoebel right in the park last year. He’s a super nice and friendly guy. I’m looking forward to checking out some of you other videos. Excellent work!!!
Wow! Thank you for this channel and these shows and for the preservation dedication of this project! I have so many great memories of dual decker (I guess "gravity rides!" and single story dark rides at "Little River Canyon Mouth Park" in Alabama and at Rock City in Tennessee (Chattanooga) and others around nw GA and NE Alabama. I loved em and I miss 'em!
Thank you, youtube algorithm. Knoebels is one of the parks on my most-wanted to visit list! I see that this was posted three years ago, did you film any more episodes? I'd love to see more!
That's so cool that there is a program like this. I hadn't heard. I've been around since the 50's, but I didn't realize there were, or had been, so many dark rides. And so many have fizzled out, which is sad. Like rollerskating rinks. It takes a lot of labor, and love, to keep them going. My heart goes out to all who have kept the rides alive. Good job! I also like the Disney dark rides that I've seen in person, or on UA-cam. And I can see where they got their origins from.
Hoping that people like you, the carpetbagger, etc. Will get more and more people out to explore all the cool local attractions around them before they all disappear
I grew up about 25 miles away from Knobels Amusement park, now I live in Florida but I had a chance to bring my kids up there twice, it’s really a special magical place.
Fun shows. I am a big supporter of “virtualism,” the use of video to research and enjoy places that are prohibitively expensive or otherwise cumbersome to do in person.
I absolutely love Ghost Trains and Haunted Houses, does anyone else remember the Ghost Train at the fairground at Morecombe? That was the first one I went out with that dip, I hope these rides don't fade away. This is a really good show.
Great show! Just discovered your channel today, and I am a theme/amusement park junkie. I've done road trips with my kids all over North America, and seeing the Mansion at Knoebel's reminds me that it's been WAAAY too long since I've been there. Good job promoting tourism. Interestingly, Centre Island on Toronto Island has one of the last few Pretzel rides out there.
I was scared to death of the Haunted Mansion at Knoebels as a kid. That was the early 90s. You couldn't get a spot in line on a warm Friday night. The place was packed. The haunted mansion was where you went if you were someone. Fun fact in the attic scene there is a guy in the back of the pile of stuff. That guy was part of a ring toss where you could win a cigar. It had a Hitler, an Indian, a black man, and a banker (I think a banker) for obvious reasons the game had to be taken down at some point. But one part of it was stuffed in the attic in honor of the past. The radio on that pile of "junk" is also functional and very old. There is also books in the first room and they all have a joke behind them.
It took me YEARS to be able to go through the Haunted Mansion with my eyes open. I think the first time I was able to do it was when I was 12 taking my little cousins on it. Had to be brave for them lol

The Haunted House at Camden Park in Kenova, WV is set up the same exact way as the Devil’s Den. Everything from the person pushing and stopping the car to the way the car goes down the little hill at the beginning of the ride
This was a wonderful video. I was so sad when our local park closed it's haunted house. I've developed photosensitivity and can't do anything with flashing/strobing lights, so I can't enjoy these great attractions anymore. Here's to them continuing the tradition for those who can!
Excellent documentary! I can't wait until this pandemic is over so I can start visiting parks again and try these out. Also, at 16:45 that horn sounds like a Wheelock 31T-115.
UA-cam must not like dark rides. Otherwise, it wouldn't have taken 4 years for this to come into my feed and everyone else's half of the comments are from the last 2 weeks. And you should have 1,000,000 views.....
Thanks so much gage, I know, what is happening with the algorithm? I worked pretty hard on this pilot, luckily I have a tonne more footage. I appreciate your enthusiasm amd will keep it up!
I miss the Coney Island of my childhood when all the old rides were still there (55 years ago). I love the old Haunted House (built by Bill Tracy in 1936) at Trimper's Amusement (founded 1893) Park in Ocean City, MD
