What's weird is that I'm not sure if it is a relatable song about memories and how everything drifts into the future or just a load of words threw in a bucket and rattled around until it forms something that seems like it should make sense.
The human brain (and actually, computers too) can't pick out truly random words, it has to take it from somewhere, so I think what Bill's doing is just writing thoughts but not fixing them so it makes sense to hear.

@@mullafacation yeah I get what you mean. It's like a rorschach test but with words instead of ink blots.
I just like this line though because the day I commented, my local government workers cut the grass in front of the house I just moved into and the smell of cut grass on a hot day gave me some really specific nostalgic memories of my childhood. Smell has a funny way of surprising you with memories you weren't ready for

this song has made me cry, and i mean that in the best way possible. ive had to be a caretaker to almost all my grandparents, who all had gotten dementia before they died. and while they were not to the point of forgetting their place in time fully, this song, makes me think of someone with dementia singing about their experiences. how time flows for them, and how they see the world and people they interact with.
i know bill's songs are vague, probably on purpose, but i cant get over how much this fits people who cant keep track of reality anymore. a soft song despite losing the ground under your feet is something so powerful, and comforting.

Nonsense. They are not usually simple at all, and any comedy is only an element of some parts of the songs because it's part of the human experience. Hell as far as the "simplicity" goes I bet you wouldn't even be able to figure out the chords to any of his songs, even ones without modulation. After you've tried that, try sitting down and writing a melody with fitting lyrics that's half as good as any of his songs. It's insulting to call his stuff anything other than musical genius and genuine expression. This one is heartwarming, why the heck would you say it feels heartwarming and then say it isn't? How it feels is what it is, that's what art is. Maybe most people don't recognize his music as what it is because any time there's anything in a song other than "I'm in love" or "I'm heartbroken" it just seems quirky and strange

"i walked on earth in special sandals. then i took them off and now i can fly around...i watched those sandals fly away and i didnt notice when they hit the ground "; an homage to the cynic/buddist philosophy that true freedom is achieved once soul is detached from all earthly pleasures.

"oh! my memories are coming back in ways i wasnt ready for. but im still enjoying how it feels. so im holding onto the details. capture the details. in a series of carefully chosen words and phrases and then replay it"; literally him having an existential epiphany and writing it into his lyrics so he can revisit the headspace later

Honestly, all I don't exactly understand is 1:28 the rest can be seen as a memory (being the beginning of the song) slowly deteriorating as time passes, first it's clear, then in the first chorus, the 'future' represents your future self recalling the memory, second verse I have no clue how it fits into everything, in the second chorus, the '7th scene' is you retelling the story, hence why the point of view is unclear to them, as this could've happened years ago and many details could've been forgotten, regardless, you write down what you can remember and read through it to reexperience the memory, however this time, instead of you flying around, the sandals fly around. And as even more time passes, the memory fades more and more to the point where you convince yourself you remember the story clearly, when in reality all you know for sure is that you 'traveled the ___, jumped over the ___, into the ___, back to the___'

In other words, if he traveled thinking closely about all his actions, he probably wouldn't have nearly as much fun as just being there. This also means that what he does during that time is harder to remember cause he was just living in the moment.
Without his blanket holding him down, he can "fly around"

I walk over the earth in special sandals
    I took those sandals off
    Now I can fly around
Some people wonder why the Sun is not very bright
My arms are much too tired for this conversation
I travel the distance in between where I was
And where I would like to be a little later
    The sky is falling
    The sky is larger
    Than any sky could be
    Ooh, ah, oh, wee
My calendar is telling me it's the future
    Somewhere there's a second scene
    With characters that never speak
But you still know exactly what they mean
And you still know exactly what the story will be
I travel the world without my blanket
    So when I'm feeling tired
    I can just fly around
Most people wonder if the moon is part of the sky
Or if it's just a decoration added later
    Ooh, ah, oh, wee
My galaxy is spinning toward the future
    Somewhere in the seventh scene
Where no one understands the point of view
That you now find so familiar
    Oh
My memories are coming back in ways I wasn't ready for
But I'm still enjoying the way it feels
So I'm holding onto the details
Capture this moment in a series of carefully chosen words and phrases
    And then replay it
I walk over the earth in special sandals
I kick those sandals off and watch them fly around
I didn't notice if they ever landed
But if they d, o I'll understand the reason
    Ooh, ah, oh, wee
The melody is drifting into the future
And I feel pretty good about what time it is
About what day it ever was and how it came to this
Ooh, the memory is drifting back in ways
That I'll pretend to know and understand
And I pretend to know exactly how the story will end
    I travel the-
    Walk over the-
    Into the-
    Back to the-

OK, having listened to this constantly for the last eight months, I can happily say that this is my favorite song of yours. I think I was initially turned off by the repetitive opening, but I've come to appreciate it more for how it builds anticipation for when it finally changes to the chorus, which is phenomenal. I really love the lyrics, they feel a little more meaningful to me than your other pieces. The freedom of the rhythm in that line is so fun to sing along to, followed by the drop off on 'oh' giving it a momentum into the following memories lyric is just SO good. The chorus in this song is catchy but not to an annoying degree. The underlying beat is easy and fun to groove to. The imagery in the music video is also gorgeous. One of the most amazing stuff about your songs are that there is so little direct meaning in the lyrics that it's possible to see almost whatever you want in the songs! I watched multiple times each time focusing on something new and the song made just as great, tho a completely new, sense as last time.
Keep up the great work! I love opening UA-cam and randomly seeing a new video from you!

maybe i am a total idiot, but i occasionally tear up at the songs
i think usually, with songs, trying to get what the artist meant somewhat grounds me, and the more specific they are, the less i am likely to empathise
since bill's songs are basically meaningless, i just think about my own experiences so it feels very touching

Bill Wurtz kind of embodies the feeling of jazz.
Like not just in the music but also in the visuals and lyrics. It’s like a flowing stream of consciousness, not always making sense, seemingly improvised and going wherever he wants.

I kept waiting for the trademark dissonance and jarring vibes, and it never quite came - everything was harmonic, relaxed - except for that *brief* mention of the future near the end that leaves a faint note of ‘hmmm.’ I had no idea how much I would love bill wurtz music that isn’t existential nightmare. it’s so… so nice. I love this.
