  • One of many wonderful commercials John Cleese did for Compaq Computer Corporation in the mid to late '80s.
A very rare find and a treasure for any John Cleese fan, these classic ads were shown only in England.

I love the line "its so heavy nobody could POSSIBLY tell you to take it home with you.. and it comes in a VERY NICE BOX!"

    Cleese is legend. LOL
Commercials used to be so much cooler. Now they are condescending and so pack with effects that they are boring.

I think the Harry Enfield 'Dime Bar' series give this a run for it money - 'Armadillos! Smooth on the inside, crunchy on the outside!' ua-cam.com/video/bqeGxMgVOHI/v-deo.html

See, why do we only get commercials this amazing around the time of the superbowl these days? This is genius; all commercials lately are nothing but stupid, and filled with awful actors.

our commercials today are politically motivated

    • @blurgle9185

As a relatively young old commercial affecianado who's not motivated or moved by sentimentality but by sheer curiousity of changing cultures as time progress, all commercials have been exceedingly stupid since they were invented. Once or twice every one or two years, a nice one comes along, but rest assured, they're all accompanied by an astronomically large plethora of artistic and intellectual travesties that would make every generation blush out of shame of having been the target audience of such talentless coercion to buy stupid products.
This commercial isn't very genius either. It's just starring John Cleese, who is a genius indeed, but the commercial is slightly better than mediocre.

Well, you should consider that portable computers weren't very common in that time. Only making clear that their computer was portable, was enough to make it stand out from the crowd. (Plus having John Cleese in the commercial makes the product automatically more awesome)

Yeah, I used to have one of those Compaq portable PCs... As big as a suitcase, very small green monochrome screen, 286. I used to play Zyll and Executive Suite and program .bat files on that sucker in XTreePro. That thing was heavy as hell; probably 30 awkwardly balanced pounds.

How the hell did he manage to kick that thing off? You'd need a bloody forklift to carry it.

If you remove the innards from any desktop computer, they are just a thin, metal, shell. Or, it could have been a cleverly sculpted cardboard box. A big one. Painted to look like a computer. Or, at least, just the thin, metal, shell. And, now, for something completely different: A phone that fits in your pocket.

Actually, it's more like the PC industrial revolution. This is when things really started to get "amazing". I mean, and entire computer that can fit on your kitchen table? Incredable!

Absolutely! These (John Cleese) commercials put them on the map. They soon became the fastest company to make a billion dollars in revenue, in US History.
Decent Product + Great Commercials = Major Success.

Theres just no future in portable computers. Who in their right mind would want to take their work with them? I mean, its not like you get overtime for that.

sigh @ the days when people who bought and used computers had a sense of humor. And the companies who sold them were appreciative of the fact.
