Have you had caulk dry in a tube that you still wanted to use?

    • @pscfoss6711

yep... i have cut the tube open at the top , completely removing the tip and used a popsicle stick to remove, caulk, place ina plastic baggie and cut a corner off and squeeze it like you would use frosting.. not perfect but less waste , did this with adhesive also

Wow! That is dedication to not wasting the caulk for sure!

I have industrial grade adhesive that’s sat for 3 years and the bottom never dried out. Exploding in the gun sounds more like the tip end dried out and the only way to release pressure was out the back and sides.
If the back end cured the adhesive, every tube in the store would be dried out (unless there’s some seal in not aware of).

I love learning about these things from your channel.
I have a project I want to use some caulk for one aspect of my project and use it again in a couple days for a different part. $10+ for using just a little each time.

I use Vaseline to seal the tip and press and seal inside the bottom.

Thank you! I'm on a very tight/set budget, so the press-n-seal would be much easier for me to afford than the others. Great to know!

I had never considered the back of the caulk tube as being a way for it to dry out. But based on what I was looking at, I can't help but wonder if the best way to go might be to just vacuum seal the used tube. A decent aftermarket roll is inexpensive and would likely keep the air out better than any of those other options.

Thanks! I figured there was a better product out there to seal used tubes, just ordered one.

I just had a thought of trying the Space Bags - I have to do a lot of caulking around the swimming pool. Whatever tubes I have leftover I will place the caulk/sealant tubes in a space bag: I think by vacuuming the air out will preserve the epoxy longer. Now I will look at your caulk-gun review.

A long (6") piece of copper wire pushed into the nozzle works and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Great ideas. I'm sure I have 3 or 4 dried up tubes from just a few months ago that I'll end up throwing away.
I had my Ryobi caulk gun cake up when I forgot to puncture the inner seal of the tube! I was using multiple tubes of adhesive and just forgot to do the puncture on one. It backed up all the way inside the gun but it still cleaned up ok.

I got an idea I am going to try. I will use my food saver to seal the tube using the air-tight bag.

quick tip (sorry if it was already posted): when you insert tube back in the gun, you don't need to waste time/battery life by pressing the trigger and waiting for the plunger to come into contact with the bottoms of the tube. Simply push the plunger in with your hand until it stops against the bottom of the tube. It's the reverse action of when you want to remove the tube. You simply pull the plunger out with your hand first before removing it, right? Thanks for taking the time/effort to research these anti-dried-up-caulking-tube solutions.

Geez Louise, a battery powered caulking gun! I still use a manual caulk-gun. How much is a battery powered caulk-gun? Great video thanks for sharing your experience.

I have the same Ryobi battery-powered caulk gun. I bought mine from Direct Tools when it was on sale for about $20. The alternative was to buy a manual one for about $10.

How long has a caulk tube lasted in these bottles from your experience?

  • @Custerd1

I usually seal the tip with a blob from a hot glue gun. The bottom I can just use press and seal or cling film.

I do this differently and typically get useful product out of a caulking tube that's one year old or older. This is a little cumbersome, but doesn't take that long to do.
1 - Cover the end with a small piece of aluminum foil.
2 - Use molten wax to seal the entire end, covering from the plastic nozzle (3/8" next to the foil) as well as the foil. I use beeswax that I keep in a 1" copper pipe cap. I heat the wax with a torch slowly (you don't want a fire) and use a 1/2" brush to apply the wax. This step is fairly quick once everything is setup.
3 - I place the entire tube in a good quality (Freezer quality) Ziplock bag.
4 - Squeeze out most all of the air before closing completely.
5 - Place the bagged caulk tube in the refrigerator. If you're worried about a possible leak then use two bags.
Before using the tube's contents, I always use an awl or slim long screwdriver to make sure the stuff in the tube tip isn't setup and hard. Sometimes a stirring action can break up the cured product that's clogging the tip, allowing it to be pushed out. I don't like pushing too hard because, as you demonstrated in your video, it can result in a big mess. If you've got one of those screw on tips, then of course, unscrew it.
A word of caution about silicone sealants/adhesives. If you’ve stored them for more than 6 months ALWAYS test them prior to use. Not only that they have to skin within half an hour or so, but it’s a good idea to verify their adhesive properties are still OK. I once had a plastic shower stall require a complete redo. It looked great, the silicone was hard, but, even after a week, you could easily pull the sealant off the surface. That one was a hard lesson learned.

A great idea but just a bit too pricey. Looks like Amazon has it over $8. Great video, by the way.

Good to know!! I have wasted enough caulk to caulk every window in the White House 🤭
