  • A common sentiment I hear is "my first game didn't do well, I should just give up." Well, let me show you why failure is essential to the creative process: here are my terrible game dev experiments I made for the PC game Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight!

I'm in my last year of uni studying games design, and the game I'm making for my final project is finally going to be the first one I release, it's a match 3 game with some other mechanics from other games that make it pretty unique as part of our module we have to release it on the app store 😁

"Nobody is born cool" I think that is something that we have to remember when we start creating any kind of content. Sometimes we look at the creations of our idols and people that we admire and compare them with our own creations and we lost our self-confidence. But, getting good takes time, when you feel in that way, look one of your own creations from 6 months ago and compare them with your creations now. Keep working hard and NEVER GIVE UP!

    • @Sybyh
      @Sybyh 3 роки тому +2

Yes, that is why if you persist in your creation, you will see 6 months later that you have progressed well and that you cannot imagine that your creation made 6 months ago was yours.

Your videos are motivating. After this video, I remembered my childhood when I made levels for Unreal Tournament. And the first ones were so ridiculous) Palm trees grew on the concrete, and jump pads teleport player over the edge of the map. It was so cool at the time. But now we have much more powerful tools in our hands. The main thing is to do what sincerely like to yourself. And people will definitely appreciate it.

I have to say, I really appreciate these kinds of videos. I've always wanted to make games ever since I was a kid playing on the PlayStation 1. "Someday I'll make a game like Spyro the Dragon, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, or even Silent Hill" I would think to myself almost daily while I was growing up. I remember I always spent more time in the level editor of any game that had one than I would actually spend in the game itself. I'd fill up entire memory cards with custom levels alone I was so obsessed. I remember when I first got my hands on MTV Music Studio or whatever it was called on the OG XBox too and what an experience it was to be able to make music too. I remember the years I wasted making custom maps for FarCry on that same system and after every song and level I made I realized more and more how much I wanted to do those kinds of things forever. Though I've never released anything, I've made numerous projects in RPGmaker and Unreal Engine. Part of me is just scared I guess. I have such a high level of standard I try to hold myself too but when I see people like you, Thomas Brush, and several others go back and show us all where it was you actually started it does 2 things. First, it makes me realise how far I've come since being that kid making Tony Hawk and FarCry levels and sloppy mixes in MTV Music Studio; second, it reminds me that I don't need to be perfect and that as long as I'm making progress and am improving then whatever I am currently working on will be worth the time and effort I put into it. Thank you.

If you know programming, get a good paying day job as a programmer then hire 3D artists and musicians to help you with your game. You will finish games much faster that way and have money to invest in the project. I spend 6-8 hours a day trying to do programming, 3D modeling, animation, level and environment design, etc..It's a ton of work and I'm now realizing I may never finish my game because I can't hire other people to help due to a lack of funds.

My first completed game project was my entry to the 2020 Brackeys game jam called HighRoller. Im pretty happy with how the aesthetics turned out (though I used assets, Im not an artist) and my game managed to get top 100 in the jam but ultimately the thing that held me back from a higher score was level design. Definitely not something you can just do on a whim, it takes practice! The biggest thing I learned from that jam was to get player feedback on the gameplay before submitting. I won't make the same mistake for the next few jams

my first game mod released actually are a tibia 7.8 altered server with new mobs and itens, it as a success in certain ways, sometimes i get it 20 plus players on in the same time! after that i make it bigger and learn how to decompile and edit executable from server and client, make it with weapons, cake crafter mechanic, add weapons like guns without rewrite the ones in base game. Then i make train system, changed all classes and it rockets out! my computer handle badly 50/50 connections with wait list over a hundred for a while, but my hdd burn before i make a penny from it, but is funny and take me years to do it right. Then i was to sad about my server failed that much, i stopped making editable content for while when i back i want to make games and did some small games never public as a space ship game, and battle arena multiplayer i was working on... until i reach college and into a programming job, i still making one or other game, but in the and is all to simple and never published stuff. Then my heitor call me asking, "Did you want make your TCC as a game?" he knows my passion about games, but not know a dot about games, i need to do a extra apresentation to allow me doing games, this apresentation need to show how i will link class content with game development soo i did. My TCC is a 9.3 of 10 and a kind of personal success, even without any fancy graphics or sound, still had a background music and sounds to enemies attack and stuff... is a arena survival with increase enemies power and amount of then each new wave... they drop weapons and heal potion and buffs. is a randonly generated island with sand grass rock and even spike bushes that deal damage to player and enemies. when players dies it save the score in a global solution and has global rank, you need access with login and password as others online game, but run entirly in you web browser fully javascript coded using threeJS i love it even with only 3 enemies 2 weapons and nothing here special. That is my game a TCC game, after that i enter 2D game dev class and 3D game dev class, but need to quit because of health issues, tried some times did small prjects, but failed to publish anything yet. i want make a small project and may just burn 100 dols (more than 10% of my paycheck) just to see if i finally got some good reviews, i know people loved my tibia ot server, but after that i never more published nothing, beucase i was worry about bad reviews, people become much hard do enjoy stuff and i already feel one success feel before... well, i just will know after try hehe may i set a really small goal and see how i go

    Yo!
JK has been my favorite game since I was but a small lad-
But I never had good net in the early 2000s and, well was frankly too young at the time to really participate anyway.
In the last year I've gotten into the JK Discord communities and am actually now making Maps, Skins and 3do's regularly. Somewhat living out a long dream of mine.
And until last year I had NEVER played JK online with anyone.
I saw people were playing a custom map, so downloaded it and hopped on, and it was--
You guessed it! Space Colony Inc! Even before I played Vanilla maps, yours was the first PVP JK experience I'd ever had!! And that was only around this time last year, yo!

One game I think communicates this point well is "The Hex".
    (spoiler alert)
Throughout most of the game, we're led to believe that the developer's first game was this well-made platformer with an anthropomorphic animal character. Then later, we find out that his actual first game was a terrible beer tapper game that he understandably tried to sweep under the rug.

It's a shame he decided to leave youtube. There aren't any playlists anyone have any fav videos they could recommend specifically relating to learning game dev? especially Unreal
